To ensure your fiance and his groomsmen are looking their best on your wedding day, educate yourself with these tips and tuxedo terminology. 1. Determine your wedding style. The first thing to consider when picking out attire for the men in your wedding is the style and theme of your wedding. Will your day be formal, informal, colorful, classic, trendy or modern? The style of your wedding will play an important role in the type and fit of the formalwear you choose. If your style is simple and casual or if you are having a beach wedding, choose a suit for a more relaxed and informal look. A bit more traditional? Choose a full tuxedo complete with a vest or cummerbund and tie. 2. Coordinate your wedding colors After deciding the style of your wedding, determine the colors the men will wear. This not only includes the color of the vest, tie and pocket square but also the color of the tuxedo itself. The most popular tuxedo color is basic black, but there are numerous colors to choose from including chocolate brown, khaki, light or dark grey, navy, white and ivory. 3. Tuxedo fits While most tuxedos fit most body types properly (when measured correctly), we carry three types of tuxes sure to flatter your guys’ stature and give him that tailored look. We carry three fits; traditional, modern and slim. 4. Get measurements done professionally We strongly encourage the men in your wedding party to get measured by a seamstress, tailor or other professional at a tuxedo shop. This will ensure his tuxedo to fit properly. 5. Tuxedo Formality Whether you are looking for a formal tuxedo or something less casual, we carry them all. Did you know the more buttons on a tuxedo, the more formal the style?! TUXEDO ANATOMY wedding attire. When choosing your shirt, pay close attention to the collar (different ties require different types of collars). Wing tip collars look best with a classic bow tie and lay down collars best accommodate a windsor tie. Pleating is also added to some styles of button down shirts and adds a traditional feel to the ensemble. Trying to decide between white or ivory? Match the bride’s wedding dress! PLEATED vs. FLAT-FRONT PANTS: The difference between pleated and flat-front trousers can be seen in the front of the pant. Pleated trousers have a pleat running down the center of each pant leg from top to bottom. Flat-front trousers do not have a pleat or crease, are flat similar to a pair of jeans. Either of these trousers are likely to have a satin stripe down the side of both legs. If your men are athletic and fit; choose a flat-front pant. Need more room in their trousers; choose pleated. VEST OR CUMMERBUND: In the past a cummerbund was a staple for all tuxedos. Recently however, vests have become all the rage. Ranging in color and pattern, vests are an easy and flattering way to accent your tux. Keep the guys looking classy even after the jacket comes off by adding a vest to their wedding day attire. Keeping it casual? Skip the cummerbund and vest entirely. THE JACKET: The jacket is the most important part of the tuxedo. The build of the groom and wedding party should be strongly considered when selecting the jacket. THE LAPEL: The collar of the jacket is otherwise known as the lapel. Lapels can be seen in four main shapes-Peak, notch, Shawl Collar, and Mandarin. The peak lapel is your standard and most popular lapel. The notch lapel usually has a deep v which can be flattering to all body types. Variation in lapels can be created with subtle details such as tone on tone satin bands, chalk striping and tone on tone texture. SHIRTS: Shirts provide another opportunity to add character to your TIES: Ties come in many different styles, patterns and colors. Bow ties are typically more classic and formal; the Windsor tie gives a more modern yet casual look. Going with a Western theme? Try a string, crossover, or bolo tie. POCKET SQUARE: Add a splash of color to your tuxedo jacket with a pocket square. Pocket squares can be folded in many different ways such as the winged puff, three fold stairs and the four point crown; check out the next few pages for some ideas. CUFF LINKS: Cufflinks and studs give your guy that polished look. Ranging from simple black or silver, show-stopping diamond, or engraved with a monogram, cufflinks are another way to add a personal touch to your wedding attire. TUXEDO TIPS: MIX & MATCH Colors and Patterns! ference? What’s the difU TUXEDO vs. S IT Don’t know the difference between a tuxedo and a suit? Don’t worry, we are here to help! Tuxedos are more formal; suits less dressy. Tuxedos have some detail on the lapel such as a satin, grosgrain or textured fabric; suits have no detail. Tuxedos are usually paired with a vest; suits are normally not. No matter if you choose a suit or a tuxedo, your guys are sure to look their best on your big day! What color should th ushers and fathers w e ear? Since the groom and his groomsmen typically match the color of the bridesmaid’s dresses, differentiate the ushers by putting them in an accent or neutral color such as silver or bronze. The fathers of the wedding should also have a neutral color, like black, to easily accent the attire of the mothers. Get creative with the coordination of your wedding party’s vest, tie and pocket square. Add variation and interest by mixing and matching patterns and colors that compliment your wedding palette. Do you have two-toned bridesmaid dresses? Mix your vest and tie -or- tie and pocket square with the two colors for the perfect compliment. Add texture to their ensemble by mixing the patterns. WHITE tuxedos… Tuxedos and suits come in many colors. We recommend reserving white/ivory tuxedos for your groom. Many times, only the groom will wear a white tux and the rest of the wedding party will wear a different or darker color.
