One Book One County
One Book One County
One Book One County is a community read program for Wells County held in
September and October every year. The program is designed to create a
countywide discussion by encouraging all residents to read the same
book. There are also a number of special events at the library related to
themes found in the featured book. This year’s title is “The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer” by Mark Twain. We have so many different versions of the book that
you can check out, it'll be hard not to find one to enjoy! Or try a few different
ones to see which version is your favorite.

Drama
“Whether forming a pirate gang to search
for buried treasure or spending a quiet
time at home, sharing his medicine with
Aunt Polly’s cat, the irrepressible Tom
Sawyer evokes the world of boyhood in
nineteenth-century rural America. In this
classic story Mark Twain recreated a long
-ago world of freshly whitewashed fences
and Sunday school picnics into which
sordid characters and violent incidents
sometimes intruded.”

Tiger Tank
Four finalists have been announced in the Tiger Tank
competition: Cakes by Tab, Pages Café, Pita Gardens,
and RE:. To help the committee decide the winner, they are
holding a community vote from now through Sept. 18th, so
there is still time to let your voice be heard by voting on
which business you think will be the best fit to open inside
the Main Library’s rental space. To participate in this
community vote, just go to: www.wellscoc.com/tiger-tank.
The winning business will be announced on Sept. 30th.
Art Prints
Tiger Tank is sponsored by the Wells County Chamber of
Commerce & Economic Development and Bluffton NOW.
The library allows you to check out up to two art prints at a
time for free with a valid library card. You can view
available prints in the gallery at the Main Library. Then just
pick out your favorite pieces and take to the front desk to
check out, just like you would a book or movie.

many?...

completed a total of 1,272 activities.
 Kids: with 1,374 children ages 2-grade 6 participating,
the group read for 7,118 hours.

were 557,488 pages read.

Family Tree Magazine is one of the Wells County Public
Library’s newest magazine subscriptions. The July/
August 2015 issue has several interesting articles,
including the article titled “Irish Sites are Smiling,” which
lists 12 popular genealogy websites. Ancestry.com is
listed first. The Wells County Public Library subscribes to
Ancestry Library, which patrons can access for free in
the library. Since Ancestry sells personal subscriptions,
remote access is not available. There are two computers
in the Indiana Room dedicated to genealogy research.
Another article discusses the variety of information available on draft records from the Civil War and both World
Wars. Besides age and marital status, place of birth, and
occupation can be found plus other information.
An article that might surprise you since this is a
genealogy magazine pertains to travel. “Living in the
Past” lists the “10 top living history destinations for
2015.” These 10 sites span the continental United States
with Conner Prairie listed as #2.
Besides Family Tree Magazine being available for check
out, you might consider our other genealogy magazine:
Your Genealogy formerly titled Family Chronicle: the how
-to-guide to tracing your ancestors is also available to
check out for one week at a time.

Westward Migration
Some might think this refers to states west of
the Mississippi, but for genealogy researchers living in Indiana it could have a different
meaning. Part of the early westward migration meant moving from the eastern states to
western Pennsylvania, then Ohio, then Indiana, and so on. This genealogy workshop will
be on searching Ohio records. Not just online
but the indexes available in the Indiana
Room. If you are like the instructors,
Meredythe and Vi, who have ancestors in
Ohio, this should be of assistance to you in
your research.
