THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
This week we celebrate three interconnected holidays and holy days in a
row: Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. Halloween and All Souls Day are
sandwiching All Saints Day which is fitting because they depend on All Saints Day for
their identity. Halloween is usually celebrated by people dressing up in costumes and
getting candy or attending parties. Halloween has roots in pagan and Christian heritages. In our Christian roots, it was
celebrated as the Eve of All Saints. Hallow means Holy and it is the Eve before we celebrate all the Holy Ones in Heaven.
Although probably influenced by the pagan celebrations of this day, it was known in certain cultures that the demons would
come out in full force the night before we celebrate all the Saints to scare the Christians or pull them away from becoming
saints themselves. People would dress up to scare or confuse the demons. When dressed in costumes they did not look like
humans, but rather often like a demon that would appear. This was believed to ward off the demons.
The next day we celebrate all the people who have lived lives as God taught and have gone to heaven after they died.
We could never be able to canonize all the people who lived good lives and made it to heaven; we only do this with select few
people who lived exemplar lives. But we know heaven is full of people who lived good lives and are with God forever, and we
honor them on November 1. (Do not forget it is a day we are required to attend Mass as a Holy Day). As we honor them we
should note their lives and use them as an example of how to live.
We end this three day series with All Souls Day. This is a day we set aside to pray for all those who have died so that
they may be purified and worthy for heaven if they are not already worthy. Although we personally pray for our loved ones who
have died, through prayers and offerings of Mass intentions, this day is a day for all who have died who have not yet gone to
heaven but are not going to hell. Heaven is Holy and we do not enter Heaven or spend time with God if we are not totally
worthy, therefore we believe that Purgatory is the place where we are purified, and our prayers assist those who are there on
their journey to heaven.
As we celebrate these three days, do so remembering the demons do not like us living God’s ways, continue to strive
to be a saint and assist those who need help on their journey to heaven. Strive to be a saint; this is all of our vocations through
our baptism.
ALL SAINTS DAY Friday is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. Remember to plan on attending Mass Thursday
night or Friday. Masses are 7:00PM Thursday, and on Friday at 7:15AM, 9:30AM, 12:00 NOON, and 7:00PM.
NO ADORATION Friday November 1, due to the Feast of All Saints.
ALL SOULS DAY is Saturday, November 2. We have our yearly All Souls Memorial Mass and lighting of candles for
those who have died within the last year and for those for whom others have called and reserved a candle at Mass at
10:00AM.
NO 8:30 AM MASS ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 2 due to setting up and preparations for All Souls Mass.
OFFICE CLOSED on Friday November 1, in honor of All Saints Day.

ST. BERNADETTE ADULT MEDITATION GROUP
St. Bernadette Adult Meditation Group is looking for new
members. We currently have two groups that meet weekly.
The first group meets on Tuesdays at 6:45PM and the second
group meets on Fridays at 8AM. Meetings last about one hour.
Additional groups can be formed if there is sufficient interest.
We follow the meditation principles of John Main, founder of
the modern Christian meditation movement. When describing
this form of prayer John Main says: “The all important aim in
Christian Meditation is to allow God’s mysterious presence
within us to become more and more not only a reality, but the
reality which gives meaning, shape and purpose to everything
we do, to everything we are…” In our sessions we strive to
“sit” at Jesus’ feet listening to Him like Mary in Luke’s Gospel
(Luke 10:38-42). We encourage each other in this journey
fostering a sense of community and fellowship. Men and
women, young and old…all are welcome to join us...we’d love
to have you! No experience necessary! Please contact
Patricia Albacete at 412.726.1321 or
[email protected] for more information.
MUSIC MINISTRY ORGAN CONSOLE FUND
As many of you know our organ console was purchased used to
save money on the large costs associated with installing a pipe
organ. Funds are still needed to help with the significant expense
of purchasing a new organ console. The current console is many
years old and is in need of constant repair and maintenance. If
you are able please consider making a donation to the organ
fund, it is only through your support that we can continue to move
forward with this important project.
