Jacksonville Elementary School 3400 Hillendale Heights Rd. Phoenix, MD 21131 410-887-7880 http://jacksonvillees.bcps.org PARENT BULLETIN JETS Debbie Glinowiecki, Principal Nancy Aumiller, Assistant Principal November 6, 2014 Dear Parents, This letter is being written on the day we are changing the Parent Pick-up procedures. It is our hope that students will be picked up by their parents promptly at 3:50. We do highly suggest that if you park in the upper parking lot you make a righthand turn onto Jarrettsville Pike. If you need to go south on the Pike, please turn around in the shopping center. This will be much safer for drivers and passengers. Parent drop-off has now become a major issue. First, we HIGHLY recommend all students assigned to buses ride them to and from school. This would cut down on the traffic. Again, we reiterate NO ONE should be stopped in the drop off zone before 9:05. This is what seems to be causing the major issue. Parents come earlier than 9:05 and stop the flow of traffic on Hillendale Heights. Buses and staff are unable to pull into the driveway or parking lot. If you must arrive before 9:05 please pull into a parking space towards the top of the parking lot. Your child may exit safely at 9:05 and you can pull away while others arriving and dropping off their children after 9:05. We have asked the Baltimore County Police to monitor the arrival time. Please do not drive on the left side of Hillendale Heights or block Overshot at anytime. We do not want anyone to receive a ticket for not following the rules. Report cards will be distributed on Thursday, November 13 for students in grades 2 through 5. Conference day is the following day, Friday, November 14. There will be no school for students. Your child’s teacher either has already or will be contacting you to set up a conference on this day. Focused on Quality Committed to Excellence The week of November 17-21 is American Education Week. This year’s theme is: Raise Your Hand for Student Success. We invite all parents, grandparents, friends, etc. to visit us and see the wonderful learning that occurs daily. Visitation will occur between 9:30-12:30 Monday through Wednesday. We stagger the grades to accompany the large number of guests (and cars!). It is requested that no videotaping occur in the classrooms and that all cell phones be silenced. Classrooms also cannot accommodate small children. The schedule is: Monday, 11/17 Tuesday, 11/18 Wednesday, 11/19 Grades 2 and 5 Grades K and 3 Grades 1 and 4 9:30-12:30 9:30-12:30 9:30-12:30 Picture make-up day will be Tuesday, November 25th. If you would like your child to have his/her picture retaken, please bring in the first set of pictures on this day. If your child was absent envelopes will be available for orders. For those who may not have heard, Ms. Kunkel’s father passed away last month. We extend our deepest sympathy to her family. As we move into the second quarter, please remember if you have any questions or concerns, please ask. Also teachers love hearing “the good things” too. We wish all you a very Happy Thanksgiving! Transcript Requests If you will be requesting transcripts be sent to private schools any time during the school year, please put your request along with any recommendations forms in an envelope clearly marked “Transcript Request” & “School Office”. Recommendation forms will be distributed to teachers through the school office. Please do not give teachers your recommendation forms personally. It is preferred that the school office distribute the forms so that they may be tracked to be certain that they are returned to the requested schools in a timely manner. If you are requesting that a particular teacher complete a form, please put the teacher’s name on the recommendation form before placing it in the envelope that is being sent to the office. There is also a $5 fee for EACH set of transcripts that you’re requesting. Please enclose a check made out to “Jacksonville Elementary”. Transcript requests will not be processed without the transcript fee. If you have any questions, please contact Carol O’Brien in the school office at 410 887-7880. Thanks for your help with the transcript process. I especially appreciate the amazing JES spirit that was so evident at our 20th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION on October 10th! We honored the service of our 20-year staff and all who have made Jacksonville Elementary what it is today while making fun memories with a new generation of JES Jets. What an incredible job by co-chairs Kathryn Delahanty-Stewart, Jennifer Hazlehurst, and Kathy Epple as well as the phenomenal team of family and faculty volunteers! I look forward to celebrating AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK, NOV. 17-21, to honor the excellent work of our students and educators. We’re all invited to visit JES then to see classrooms in action, including the new curriculum discussed at the recent JES Parent Night. Our ORIGINAL WORKS student art program (orders due Nov. 12th), the Dec. 1st-5th SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR, and upcoming SPIRITWEAR sale can assist with your giftgiving needs while benefiting JES as well. Thank you! As we think of those in need this season, there are great ways to share time and resources at JES while showing our children the value in giving back to the community. The ongoing THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE and upcoming HOLIDAY PRESENT DRIVE and MITTEN, HAT, & SOCK TREE are deeply appreciated by those who receive the gifts and holiday meals.
