welcome to clintonville
W
hen the Clinton family reached the area
of the Pigeon, their ox became lame
and they could not cross the river. Thus,
what is now the City of Clintonville
began. A Lame Ox Festival celebrates the
event with historical games and dances. Originally known as
the Pigeon for its vast swarms of Passenger Pigeons, the area
is now known as the home of Four Wheel Drive (FWD) and
North Central Airlines. FWD now is Seagrave Corporation
and North Central Airlines is now Delta.
A drive down Clintonville’s active Main Street provides
shops, restaurants, and views of stately houses and large
shade trees.
This summer, a highway project will close part of the street
but the city will remain open for business and welcoming
visitors. The city also has a thriving industrial park.
Excellent public schools along with two private schools
St. Martin and St. Rose attract families. An up to date library
serves the area. The city fields an excellent amateur baseball
team and an American Legion Baseball team at W.A. Olen
Athletic Field at Don Jirschele Stadium in the summer. This
year, the city rallied around the Kansas City Royals when local
baseball star Mike Jirschele appeared as an assistant manager
and third base coach in the World Series.
Clintonville is governed by an elected mayor, city
council and has a full time administrator to supervise city
departments. The city has its own water, sewer and electric
utilities.
Numerous parks provide recreational activities year round
and when the ice freezes on Pigeon Pond ice fisherman and
cross country skiers come out in droves. A disc golf course
has been added recently and a 18-hole golf course offers a
reasonable round of golf. A community center provides daily
meals and a center for senior activities as well as a gathering
place for community events. Clintonville is surrounded by
family dairy farms and a farmers market in the growing
season offers farm fresh produce, cheese, eggs and other
products.
A veteran’s memorial on Main Street is now being
expanded to include space for more tributes. Local veterans’
groups are active in Memorial and Veterans Day tributes. The
American Legion hosts a steak fry monthly in all except the
coldest winter months.
Local churches offer a free community meal weekly
and a food pantry serves the area. Clintonville citizens look
out for their neighbors. Service clubs meet regularly and
offer opportunities to get involved in community efforts.
Clintonville is a great place to raise a family or retire. Local
realtors are happy to provide a tour of available homes for sale
in the city.

Downtown shops open
for business during construction
Easy access to downtown businesses will
still be available throughout the reconstruction of State
Highway 22, Clintonville’s Main Street. Reconstruction is
expected to being as early as June 1.
The reconstruction project will extend from 10th Street
to 13th Street. Deteriorated pavement, curb and gutter,
sidewalks, and the storm sewer will all be replaced.
The Pigeon River Bridge will also be replaced as part
of this project.
During reconstruction, Main Street will be closed to all
traffic between 10th Street and 13th Street. Traffic will be
detoured via Seventh Street, N. Lyons Street, E. 12th Street,
SSGT Warren Hansen Drive, and State Highway 156.
Despite the traffic detour, access to businesses and
residences within the project will be provided and
maintained. Parking is available on 10th Street, 11th Street,
12th Street and 13th Street. A parking lot can be found
on 11th Street near the heart of the downtown area, well
within walking distance of the downtown businesses.
Some driveways may be temporarily closed when they
are being reconstructed or when construction operations
are occurring near the driveways. Side streets connecting
to Main Street may be closed 50 feet from Main Street.
The construction project is expected to be complete by
November of 2015.
See the adjacent maps showing the detour route and
construction project area, and visit http://www.dot.state.

Clintonville history
T
he Clintonville area is built on a foundation
of historical intrigue. Clintonville is widely
known as the home of the four-wheel drive
vehicle, as the first all-wheel drive cars and
trucks were first created in Clintonville in
1908. The Four Wheel Drive Museum, located at 105 E.
12th St., can be toured by anyone looking to learn more
about the history of the Four Wheel Drive Corporation
and how it helped to put Clintonville on the map.
The history of many other aspects of Clintonville are
highlighted at Pioneer Park, which boasts numerous
buildings to tour. Each one tells a different story, and all
are packed with historical items that show what life in the
Clintonville area was like through the years. Operated by
the Clintonville Area Historical Society, the park features
the following attractions: History House, a two-story
frame house built in 1861; Clintonville’s first town hall

and fire department; Doty-Besserdich House, made of
stovewood walls with pieces piled on top of one another
and held together by mortar; Stavemaker Cabin, built in
1869 by Ralph Denn to serve as his stave-making factory
and home; and one of the most unique collections of
stones in the United States, including Pioneer Park’s “Great
Wall of China”.
The Marion, Embarrass and Bear Creek areas also
feature historical interests that are unique to each
community. These communities were founded along
waterways such as the Pigeon River and Embarrass River,
and are in very close proximity to the Wolf River, which
was the lifeline for area communities throughout the 19th
century. Embarrass was named after the Embarrass River,
whose name derives from a French word for “impede”
or entangle, because logs so often snagged along the
waterway. Bear Creek started out as a lumber camp in
1850 when the state of Wisconsin was just two years
old. In those days, the only inhabitants of the area were
Menominee Indians. Like many pioneer towns, Marion,
Bear Creek and Embarrass went through the stages of
Indian campsites, logging points and trading centers.
The Clintonville area is a treasure trove of historical
wonders waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re visiting
for a day, a week or longer, you’re sure to find items of
historical relevance around every corner.

village of embarrass
T
he Village of Embarrass was named after
the Embarrass River, whose name derives
from a French word for “impede” or
entangle, because logs so often snagged
along the waterway.
The beautiful river community has grown to become a
picturesque fishing destination. Embarrass also features a
large community park that is home to Embarrass Fun Daze
every August. The event celebrates the village’s unique
identity and is put on by the Embarrass Fire Department, a
volunteer force that is a vital contributor to the community
both in safety and fire protection services as well as
community involvement.
Marion is a friendly, caring community that works for
residents and businesses alike. Drive along our tree-lined
streets and you will sense something special: a sense
of pride. Our city has enjoyed decades of growth and
prosperity that is mirrored in the well-kept homes, the
thriving businesses and the spirit of our people. The fact
is, generations of hard working people have shaped Marion
into a community; a role model for progressive small
towns everywhere.
One of the nice things about Marion is that the great
outdoors is just outside your door - surrounded by a
year-round scenic paradise for boating, canoeing, hiking,
biking, golfing, fishing, snowmobiling, and hunting. Within
the city and surrounding area there are acres of parks,
trails and recreation facilities.
village of bear creek
B
ear Creek started out as a lumber
camp in 1850 when the state of
Wisconsin was just two years old. In
those days, the only inhabitants of
the area were Menominee Indians.
Like many pioneer towns, Bear Creek went through the
stages of Indian campsites, logging points and trading
centers.
Enterprising lumberman Welcome Hyde became the
founder of the village when he located his lumber camp
on the bank of the river and cut the first road into the
area. Within a short time, other families began building
homes nearby and many of these earliest settlers found
employment in many lumber camps that came into the
territory. There was no village in the whole township
area of the present Deer Creek until the railroad was
built in 1880. About this time, F.M. Hyde built a store at
what became Bear Creek Station. Truman brothers built
a second general merchandising store after Hyde, and
a depot was built and post office started. Before very
long, the station became a settlement of considerable
importance in this lumbering area.
Catastrophe hit the village in 1902, when fire wiped
out three quarters of its area. This fire, still referred to by
old timers as “The Big Fire”, was the main reason behind
the move to incorporate the village that same year. One of
the first steps taken by the village fathers was to provide
as much firefighting equipment as possible. Within two
months, the village had a hand-powered engine with 500
feet of hose and a large cistern reservoir.
When the village was incorporated, it was named
Welcome to honor its first settler but within a few years
the name had changed back to Bear Creek because of the
confusion resulting from the village and railroad station
having different names.
Presently, Bear Creek has a population of 415. The
main industry in the Village is the Great Lakes Sauerkraut
Company, which is the largest sauerkraut company in
the world. The original Flanagan Sauerkraut Factory was
opened in 1916.
Some of the main events that are held in the village are
the St. Mary’s Sauerkraut Festival, held on Saturday and
Sunday of the first full week in August every year. Garden
tractor pulls are held in the Village in spring and fall.

Schutt Industries
combines quality materials
with superior workmanship
Schutt Industries (SI) was established
in 1998 in Clintonville. SI produces high
performance military trailers and
custom engineered ground
systems. Years of product
longevity and the “need
it, get it” customer
service attitude have
made SI a leader in
the defense market.
Schutt Industries is a
full service facility operating
within 300,000 square feet of
manufacturing space in which the
company fabricates, welds, machines,
assembles and paints, all in-house.
Schutt Industries has the technical experience and
ability to produce various communication platforms
and enclosures, high performance military and
heavy-duty commercial trailers, as well as related
trailer components like hydraulic surge brake systems
and axle systems. Years of product longevity have
demonstrated the combined application of quality
materials and superior workmanship.
The business has quickly become one of the
leading suppliers of Military trailer and shelter
systems to the U.S. Department of Defense. The

company’s core products include, but are not
limited to, HMMWV TACOM approved
towable trailer systems such as
the Light Tactical Trailer (LTT
– M1101, M1102, &
Heavy Chassis), larger
higher payload capacity
trailers such as the
M200A1 2-Wheel 2
½ Ton Trailer & M1061A1
4-Wheel 5 Ton Flatbed Trailer,
custom designed flatbed trailers
up to 24,000 lb. GVW, and HMMWV
mountable shelter and pallet systems.
This past year, the company won a competitive
bid for over $80 million from the United States
Government to manufacture truck and trailer
systems by TACOM and had been awarded a 5-year
army contract. The expansion of the company
has been an ongoing positive challenge and the
community has been proud and supportive of
the endeavors and success that Schutt Industries
has provided, and look forward to the growth and
prospects that the future of this business has to offer.

Chicken on the Run offers tasty, Broaster chicken
Broaster Chicken is now available at Chicken on
the Run, 325 ½ S. Main Street. Located in the former Bud’s
Cheese Haus location at the Shell gas station, offers a wide
variety of grab-n-go Broaster Chicken items.
Jodi Keller is the sole proprietor of the business, which
officially opened on Aug. 20, 2012.
“I have worked with my husband and father-in-law as
a Broaster Chicken product and equipment distributor
since 1993,” she explained. “Their territory covers northeast
Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. There are
75 Broaster Chicken distributors worldwide and not many
people know that Clintonville is home to one of them.
Keller said they worked many long hours to get the
facility set up with all the necessary equipment. They also
put in a lot of time making sure everything met state codes.
Keller explained that Broaster Chicken is the second
largest chicken program in the world, and is unique
because of the pressure frying procedure. As each order
is received, the chicken is placed inside the Broaster
Company manufactured pressure fryer, designed to cook
each individual piece of chicken “under pressure” in the
chicken’s own natural juices, limiting the absorption of
cooking oil and driving the heat deep down to the bone
while searing the chicken with a crispy-crunchy coating.
All Broaster foods are prepared and cooked in a similar
fashion. Chicken on the Run is unique to many other
operators as they cook in 100% Rice Bran Oil, a much
healthier oil choice.
A number of combo meals are available, including

chicken by the bucket, appetizers, a Friday fish fry, BBQ
smoked ribs on Saturday and Sunday, and an assortment

additions to the menu include gyros, house-made egg rolls

minimal order and delivery charge may apply. A 24 hour

more.

A place for good
food, fun and friends
Great food, warm nostalgia, and a friendly
staff await you at A&W in Clintonville, which recently
celebrated its 75th anniversary.
In 1939, Howard and Rella Hundertmark bought the
franchise for $500 and built a small root beer stand on the
corner of First and Main Streets. That summer they sold
hamburgers, hot dogs and mugs of root beer for five cents each.
A steady stream of changes have taken place since then,
including several remodel operations and some menu changes.
Howard and Rella’s son, Bruce, owns the restaurant along with
his wife, Jean. The restaurant is currently managed by Erica
Hundertmark, who is proud to be the third generation selling
A&W food and root beer in Clintonville. It is believed that this
is the oldest active franchise continuously owned by one family
in the world.
The Hundertmark family credits their success to three
core principles: making delicious food fresh to order, serving
customers in a friendly and professional manner, and
providing a clean and welcoming dining experience which
includes arcade games for the kids and a jukebox to play many
nostalgic tunes.
“We are proud to serve 100 percent US beef, hand-breaded
chicken and all-beef hot dogs,” said Erica. “Our root beer is
made fresh every day and served in chilled mugs.
The A&W restaurant in Clintonville has been in the Hundertmark family
for 75 years. Pictured (from left) are Mike Nelson, Kristin Nelson, Amilea
Nelson, Erica Hundertmark, Jean Hundertmark and Bruce Hundertmark.
“This year, we added options for different shakes, including
17 different flavors that are available at all times. We also offer a
different ice cream flavor of the week each week,” added Erica.
Friendly employees are also a fixture at the restaurant.
“I feel like my employees are my family because I spend so
much time with them and we really have a family environment
here,” concluded Erica.
A&W is located at 271 S. Main Street and can be reached
by phone at 715-823-3355. The restaurant is open daily from
10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the summer, and 10:30 a.m. to 9
p.m. in the winter.

For over 75 years, Fox Communities

track of the money brought in and lent out on a separate
sheet of paper.
This concept grew as they were able to help more
people. Fast forward to today, and the credit union has
evolved to 15 locations and almost 300 employees—each
and every one committed to enrich the quality of life for
members through personalized financial services.
Fox Communities Credit Union is a member-owned
and not-for-profit cooperative. Since they are a non-forprofit cooperative, they do not pay stockholder premiums
or high salaries to executives. Thus, the money goes
back to members in the form of higher interest rates on
deposits, and lower interest rates on loans and low fees.
At Fox Communities Credit Union, employees work
diligently to provide the best products and services
to members while maintaining a strong, secure credit
union. They exist to serve their members and the
communities in which they live. Their commitment to
give back to those communities through sponsorships,
fundraising and volunteer efforts has helped over 300
organizations in northeast Wisconsin.
As a member of Fox Communities Credit Union, the
financial needs of members is the top priority. Offers
include a wide variety of products and services including
several different savings and checking accounts, home
loans, auto loans, recreational loans, credit cards, lines
of credit, investment services, and more. Member
security is also of the utmost importance while members
complete online banking transactions through an easyto-use system which allows members to view accounts
from the comfort of their homes or while on the go.
Fox Communities Credit Union can also assist business
owner members with financial planning and goals,
and their commitment to providing the best financial
education for members is offered in the form of many
free workshops and seminars offered throughout the
year.
Fox Communities Credit Union strives to provide the

Routine Eye Exams Allow for Early Detection of Other Health Issues
Locally-owned Griebenow Eyecare has been
providing quality eye care for over 35 years
Eyes are windows to the soul. They are also windows that
can show your eye doctor early warning signs of other health
problems.
Taking care of your vision should be just as much a
priority as exercising or eating right to maintain your health.
After all, we use our eyes for, well, everything. Having healthy
vision can help keep you safe while driving, help you learn at
school, help you achieve your goals at work, allows you to play
sports, kick back and watch a movie, or play with your kids.
The list is endless.
Griebenow Eyecare is here to help keep your vision
healthy and your eyes in focus for whatever your day
presents. Many eye issues and diseases can be treated when
caught early enough. To keep you seeing clearly, it’s important
to get a comprehensive eye exam at least once per year, or as
often as your eye doctor recommends.
“A comprehensive eye exam is the best way to find out if
you need glasses or contacts,” says Dr. Kerry Griebenow, one
of two optometrists at Griebenow Eyecare. “It’s also the best
way for us to catch eye diseases early, allowing us to provide
better care and treatment options.”
Perfect eyes? Even if you’ve had perfect vision your whole
life, it’s still important to get a comprehensive eye exam.
Diseases and conditions such as macular degeneration,
cataracts, glaucoma and presbyopia can arise as you age.
“Presbyopia literally means aging eyes,” says Dr. Craig
Sylte, optometrist at Griebenow Eyecare. “If you find you are
continually in need of longer arms to read the morning paper,
just so your eyes can focus, there’s probably a good chance
you have presbyopia.”
The fix can be as simple as a pair of prescription reading
glasses, some progressive no-line bifocals, or contact lenses.
But, it’s important to get your eyes checked first, just to be
sure there’s no other issues playing a part in your eye issues.
And, when it’s time to pick out a new pair of glasses, contacts,
safety glasses, prescription or regular sunglasses, Griebenow
Eyecare’s team of friendly and experienced eye care
professionals is here to help. Griebenow Eyecare features over
900 frames, including designer frames such as Fossil, Harley
Davidson, Guess, Kate Spade, frames with interchangeable
temples such as Dilem and Change Me, all the way to more
basic designs, computer glasses and safety glasses.
“We love being part of the community,” says Dr.
Griebenow. “And, with that, we are dedicated to serving all
members of the community. We treat and provide care for
individuals from six months old to 100 years young and
everyone in between.”
With locations in New London and Clintonville, open
five days a week with evening hours on Mondays and
Wednesdays, locally-owned Griebenow Eyecare really is
your one-stop-shop for all of your family eye care needs! For

Nahh! Tackaway provides
all your equine needs
Looking for feed, tack,
or any other equine need?
Nahh! Tackaway has what you need.
Nahh! Tackaway is owned by
Judy Dreifuerst, who has dreamed
of owning a tack shop ever since
she was three years old, living in
the city.
As a young girl, Judy was always
finding a way to get the stables. She
often hitched rides with friends just
to spend time out with the horses.
After getting older and finding
her own place she met a friend in
Minnesota that was selling a couple
of American Quarter Horses and
she went to look. After going through a bunch, her eyes
landed on a liver chestnut colt. She named him Buck.
Throughout the years she learned about all the different
tack and training technics with horses. She wanted to open
a shop that would be able to help people find everything
they needed without trouble so she opened Nahh!
Tackaway, a family run tack and feed store dedicated to
helping horse owners with anything from supplies to feed
as well as lessons and training.
Judy has also been able to pass down the passion of
horses to her daughter Kellie. Training and caring for horse
runs in this family’s blood.
Nahh! Tackaway can provide everything an equine
owner needs. Whether you’re just starting out or have been
with horses for years, Nahh! Tackaway is happy to help you
enjoy the passion of being with horses.

Tadych’s Econofoods:
Serving their customers since 1968
The folks at Tadych’s Econofoods have
worked hard to provide successful, family-owned
grocery operations in northeast Wisconsin and the upper
peninsula of Michigan. Jim Tadych founded the family
business in July of 1968.
When you ask Jim Tadych why he has been in the
supermarket business for over 46 years, he will tell you it is
because he loves people. Being able to fill the needs of his
customers has been his passion from the beginning. That
mind set has carried Jim from his first store in Brillion in
July of 1968, to the most recent acquisition of his store in
Clintonville.
It should come as no surprise Jim Tadych took to the
grocery business.
His father, Victor, got into the grocery business as a
teenager in the 1920s and left school early for his first meat
market job. That job led Victor to open Fairview Market
in Manitowoc: a small general store and market where Jim
started packing potatoes when he was grade school age.
He would work before and after school, though he and
his brother Jerry were sometimes caught throwing rotten
potatoes at each other!
In the early 1960s, Jim took time away from his father’s
family business to serve his country in the Army. Upon his
return, he got married and started his family.
Jim realized his father’s store could not adequately
support the many family members now involved. So, in the
mid 1960s he began to search for a store to buy.
The search proved difficult until 1968 when he found
a small “mom and pop” grocery store in Brillion. It was
a turn of the century blacksmith shop converted into a
grocery store with less than 700 square feet of space.
For decades it was known as Doughty’s Grocery,
although the Keenway name remained on the building. You
can find a picture of this store prominently displayed in
every Tadych’s Econofoods.
The store’s original owner, Francis Doughty, had passed
away and his wife Freida was ready to sell. However, she
hadn’t realized Jim was a potential buyer. She thought he
was applying for a job. She told him, “We’re not hiring
anymore.”
Ultimately, Freida sold the store to Jim. Both Victor and
Freida helped finance the deal and further supported Jim
by not calling in their loans during the early years.
The store served as a modest beginning for Jim. He, his
wife Pat and their three kids lived above the store. In his
first days of self employ, Jim asked himself more than once
what he had gotten into.
Forty-five years after T & C Market first opened its
doors, Jim Tadych knows the answer to the question he
asked himself in 1968.
“I have gotten into, not only a business or career, but
48 | Discover Clintonville 2015
a way of life. A blessed life filled with many challenges,”
he said. “But those challenges are offset by the many great
friends, employees and customers I get to work with every
day.”
Jim’s son Mike is now the president of the company,
though Jim is still very involved with major decisions and
day-to-day operations.

Pigeon River Brewing:
Your destination for outstanding beer
The folks at Pigeon River Brewing believe
beer is more than just a catalyst for drunkenness, but it
need not be held on a pedestal as a rare delicacy. They
subscribe to the philosophy that, “from man’s sweat and
God’s love, beer came into the world” (St. Arnold of Metz,
Patron Saint of Brewers). They feel that high-quality beer
is a gift from God, which should be enjoyed with our
daily bread to nourish our bodies and souls and bring
merriment to every day.
When Nathan Knaack and Mathew Wichman crossed
paths, it was immediately obvious that they had a lot in
common: both were proudly born and bred Wisconsinites
with agricultural roots, German heritage, and above all
passion for drinking and brewing great beer. As members
of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Brew Club, the
pair developed their knowledge and skill for brewing beer.
After graduation, they pooled together and purchased
a 1-barrel brewing system and a few bulk tanks from
local dairy farmers. With this system, they experimented,
developed, and perfected recipes until they knew that they
had arrived at a product which needed to be shared with
the world.
In the fall of 2011, Nate and his wife Kayla purchased a
former bar and restaurant to be converted into a brewpub.
After many months of renovating and applying for
permits, Pigeon River Brewing finally opened July 18, 2012
in honor of the feast day of St. Arnold of Metz, patron saint
of brewers.
Their mission is to provide our customers with
outstanding beer to enjoy in jovial surroundings. They
carry out this mission by brewing beers based on timehonored recipes from around the world; using the highest
quality grains, hops, and yeast, without compromise; and
encouraging patrons to seek beer which delights their
tastes, warms their hearts, and stirs their souls…and then
encouraging them to have another.
Pigeon River Brewing Co. serves many different styles
of beer from light to dark and in between. They offer a
large selection, with 18 tap lines including their very own
gourmet sodas as well as a full liquor bar with wine.
If you’re interested in taking home Pigeon River Beer,
they sell 1/2 gallon glass growler jugs for $12 for your
first full growler and $10 thereafter for refills. Pigeon
River Brewing also bottles their own beer and plans to
sell upwards of 1,000 ½ beer barrels equivalent of beer
this year.
Pigeon River Brewing Co. is located at W12710 U.S.
Highway 45 in Marion. Their hours of operation are from
4 p.m. to close Wednesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to
close on Saturday and Sunday. The brew pub is closed on
Monday and Tuesday.
