ABOUT THE UITMARKT The Uitmarkt is the official opening event of the new cultural season. Entering its 38th year in 2015, it runs from 28 to 30 August. The Uitmarkt is an annual fixture in Amsterdam’s cultural calendar and takes place at Museumplein and Leidseplein. A free festival, the Uitmarkt draws around 500,000 visitors each year – visitors who are interested in arts, culture and literature in every shape and form. The Uitmarkt refelects all aspects of Dutch cultural life and focuses on what will be on offer on Dutch stages and in Dutch museums during the coming cultural season. To help maintain the accessible character of the festival, all performances are completely free and all organisations and artists waive their fees for taking part. These pages don’t contain the entire programme but instead several ‘language no problem’ highlights and tips perfectly suited to international visitors. FRI Music/pop DE PIT CREW PRESENTS: PIT STAGE Discover Amsterdam’s youngest stage talent, united in the city’s most vivacious cultural moshPIT. Get ready for the mellifluous pop band Future Juke Box, a fair dose of funky pop by The Slicks and an enchanting glass harp concert by Lotte Sarembe. 20 ABN AMRO PODIUM 19:30-21:30 Music/pop CLUB SILENCIO Friedrich Nietzsche once said: “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” Amsterdam’s best clubs join forces and host a private area with a silent disco at the Museumplein near the pond. 18 CLUB SILENCIO 20:15-24:00 Music/pop UITMARKT OPENING Friday night the Uitmarkt traditionally kicks off with a grand slam opening. Be prepared to rumble! 20 ABN AMRO PODIUM 23:00-23:45 SAT Music/world music KASBA Fusing raï, rock, reggae, funk and traditional gnaoua, crossover band Kasba has made it their trademark to create the most rythmatically infectious potpourris. 12 PARADISO GROTE ZAAL 12:00-12:30 Music/pop SIR JAMES In January of this year, Dutch pop-rock band Sir James released their debut album “My Love the Drunk”, a mixture of melodic alternative pop rock and subtly arranged songs. Having won various prizes, Sir James awes critics and audiences alike with their expressive, energetic music. 3 MELKWEG THEATERZAAL 12:30-13:00 Jazz / world music ZO! GOSPEL CHOIR With their beautiful harmonies and powerful lead vocals, the ZO! Gospel Choir is fired up and ready to bring the voice centre stage again. In an intimate setting, their “A Capella Sessions” are an equivocally blissful treat to the soul. 12 PARADISO GROTE ZAAL 13:00-13:30 Classical music/opera PIANO DUO FESTIVAL Expect a sneak peek of the Piano Duo Festival Amsterdam (6th to 11th of October) that brings an ode to the premiere league of national and international piano Dance SCAPINO BALLET ROTTERDAM In the dazzling piece HENRY, master choreographer Itamar Serussi applies his characteristically inventive and vigorous movements to craft a playful, elegant, humoristic and oftentimes razor-sharp show. 5 STADSSCHOUWBURG 14:30-15:00 Dance DANCE AND THEATRE COMPANIES Fifteen Amsterdam based dance, theatre and performing arts companies are joining forces at the Uitmarkt. Head to the Concertgebouw where the National Opera and the Nederlandse Reisopera will bring various operas and duets orchestrated by a well-sorted musical arrangement and vocalised by soprano singer Lilian Farahani and tenor Linard Vrielink. 27 CONCERTGEBOUW 14:30-15:30 pure and unbridled. In 3:The Garden, choreographer Nicole Beutler challenges these notions in kaleidoscopic and acrobatic ways. 5 STADSSCHOUWBURG 17:30-18:00 HOLLADAY Music/pop LADY DANDELION The debut album Funambulism of Amsterdam based triphop duo Lady Dandelion is about the tricky act of balancing between immeasurable love and the all-consuming pain that – in some cases – is bound to come with it. With lyrics from Shakespeare, Sarah Kane and Elvis Costello accompanied by the melancholic triphop beats of Landy Dandelion’s. 20 ABN AMRO PODIUM 14:30-15:00 Classical music/opera RAGAZZE QUARTET A copious programme dedicated to presumably the most virtuous composer that ever lived on planet earth: Ludwig van Beethoven. During this concert the Ragazze Quartet will present Beethoven’s development as a composer: from the classical beginning and stormy ‘Serioso’ to his boundless string quartets op.132. 23 PRINS BERNHARD CULTUURFONDS, 15:00-15:30 Music/pop HOLLADAY What started out as a cover band, has matured into a full-fledged rock, funk and soul band. Taking centre stage at the ABN AMRO Podium, the young quintet is serving a dynamic musical amuse-bouche. 20 ABN AMRO PODIUM 15:30-16:00 Music/pop ORANGE FOX With fervid zest, Orange Fox fuses the growling guitars of Kings of the early Leon with the melodic sounds of legendary rock band U2 to create their own highly energetic live show. Music magazine MusicMaker dubbed them “a band with the X-Factor with an undisputed, recognizable sound.” 3 MELKWEG 15:30-16:00 Dance NICOLE BEUTLER / NBPROJECTS In contrary to us civilised, cultivated humans, nature is the epitome of everything that is deemed authentic, Music/pop DE FONK “Baby, funk it up, you gotta funk it up”…. Revealing what corpulent sex slaves, tuba-playing Nazi obsessives and reborn doll fantasists do in their respective basements, the film yields more than a few startling discoveries. 11 DE BALIE 18:00-19:30 Music/pop SENA PERFORMERS POPNL AWARD Discover the latest bands at the Melkweg at the Sena Performers POPnl Award. This one-night festival showcases fourteen impressive new bands – including Assorted Travellers – as they battle for the title. 1 EN 2 MELKWEG 18:00-23:20 Music/pop DIGGY DEX Rapper and producer Koen Jansen a.k.a. Diggy Dex has been part of the Dutch hiphop establishment for over a decade. His fourth album, which he released under his own label We Want More Music, has received wide acclaim. 20 ABN AMRO PODIUM 18:30-19:00 Music/pop THE BRAHMS Catchy and melodic soundscapes combined with traditional African grooves, are sufficient reason to trigger a paroxysm of danceable indie pop. Spearheading their way to top, the Brahms will make want to you kick up your heels. 1 MELKWEG 20:00-20:20 Music/pop CLUB SILENCIO As part of the Uitnacht, Club Silencio is guaranteed to jump-start Saturday night with the infamous Encore DJ Team, resident at the Melkweg. Upon winning various prizes and participating in talent competitions, Steffen Morrison has been on a steady path to a wider audience, leaving his mark wherever he performs. 20 ABN AMRO PODIUM 20:30-21:15 Jazz/world music RUGILE & ROBERT ROOK By means of a loop station, this electro-acoustic duo is adamant to bring an exciting mix of jazz, soul, modern grooves and Lithuanian folk music. Aside from their regular night program, the organization is now also spearheading towards an extensive live music program scheduled for the evenings. Jazz/world music REMBRANDT FRERICHS TRIO Widely reckoned for their innovative eye and jazzy repertoire, Rembrandt Frerichs Trio is embarking on a new artistic journey by collaborating with Middle Eastern musicians. Resembling the dreamy soundscapes of Kate Bush and Jonsi and the quirkiness of Regina Spektor, her music can be described as “alternative pop with an edge”. Classical/opera FUNKY ORGANS Together with his partners in crime Oene van Geel and Alfredo Genovesi, Jacob Lekkerkerker developed Funky Organs, an alias under which they create cutting-edge, out of the ordinary, yet funky music. Via improvised soundscapes, classical organ sounds are sampled and edited live on stage. 2 MELKWEG 13:30-14:00 19 KIOSK 12:30-13:00 Dance DANCE MAKERS AMSTERDAM Please Me Please part 1 and 2 starts off with a solo by Ivan Ugrin. As the quintessential embodiment of a virtuous male dancer, he harnesses all his talents to seduce the audience. Yet as time passes on, this picture perfect image is coming to a screeching halt. 7 BELLEVUE 13:00-13:30 Jazz/world music KØGGING During the Uitmarkt, jazz formation Køgging will give a foretaste of their latest album Sketches of Ordinary Life. Featuring Michael Moore on clarinet and alt saxophone, contra bass player Tobias Nijboer and drummer Felix Schlarmann to complement the novel Amsterdam based band. 30 ORGELPARK 14:00-14:30 Dance KORZO One of the most talented choreographers at Korzo is Joeri Dubbe. Having won various prestigious prizes, Joeri embarked on a quest to rekindle with our own inner child. The typically uninhibited, spontaneous view of a young, carefree child offers an enchanting perspective on how we furnish our lives once we’re catapulted into adulthood. 7 BELLEVUE 14:00-14:30, 16:00-16:30 Jazz/world music TRUNK! Trunk! synthesises funk with jazz in such a convoluted, original way that it becomes a daunting task not to dance. Echoing legendary artists as Miles Davis, the band has performed with an inexhaustible list of jazz coryphaeus including Deborah J. Carter, Christian Hassenstein and Ellen ten Damme. 20 ABN AMRO PODIUM 14:30-15:00 Dance DUDA PAIVA COMPANY Preview of the latest Duda Paiva Company production that will soon premiere at the Festival Mondial Théâtres de Marionnettes in France. In coproduction with various theatre companies, they have yet again crafted a provocative yet scenic crossover repertoire. 7 BELLEVUE 15:00-15:30 Classical/opera ROTTERDAM PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA Kick back and pay heed to the public rehearsal of Ligeti’s Atmosphères, Strauss junior Wals ’An der schönen, blauen Donau’ and Richard Strauss’ ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’, under the leadership of music director Martyn Brabbins. 26 CONCERTGEBOUW GROTE ZAAL, 15:00-16:00 Music/pop JACK AND THE WEATHERMAN This laidback duo hailing from Harlem try to focus on the sunny side of life. This positive attitude is especially evident in their music. It’s a mix of funky guitar riffs, relaxed reggae chops and flowing lyrics: music that puts a smile on your face. Granted with multiple prizes, they are ready to take the world by storm. Jazz/world music ZAPP4 Uitmarkt is proudly presenting Zapp4: a string quartet that flawlessly combines groove, improvisation and fantasy with passionate solos. Particularly on stage the group is a blast: interacting with high speed, the quartet has a far stretched musical spectrum. Presenting musical and artistic craftsmanship of the uppermost level, Marco Santos captivates from beginning to end. 28 CONCERTGEBOUW 19:00-19:30 Film IDFA: TELL SPRING NOT TO COME THIS YEAR Especially for the Uitmarkt, the International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) presents a taste of what’s in store at the upcoming edition with a screening of the award-winning combat documentary ‘Tell Spring Not To Come This Year’. The film sheds light on the war in Afghanistan, seen through the eyes of the Afghans who live it. Excellently crafted, yet unsettling depiction of life in a warzone. 11 DE BALIE 20:00-21:30 Music/pop TENTEMPIÉS Bring your Sunday to a swinging peak with TenTemPiés: an idiosyncratic mixture of latin, rock, ska and reggae, albeit with an Amsterdam-Chilean twist. Or as TenTemPiés frames it: music for the mind and body. 20 ABN AMRO PODIUM Music/pop NACHTSCHADE With their consistently theatrical and poetical shows, Amsterdam based band Nachtschade has performed in pretty much every club, bar and festival in the city at least once. Inspired by prodigies such as David Bowie, dEUS and The Beach Boys, their surf ‘n roll and psychedelic rock ‘n blues is the picture-perfect music to cut a rug on.
