It’s not the end of the world. Only the „four-on-the-floor“ of an Oberheim DX drum machine –
morphing slightly in and out of time. Squeezed to 12-bits and the last drop of blood by Akai’s first ever
sampler, the s-900. It’s a slight minor key and a fragile glimpse of hope. Forcing its way through the filters
of a Casio synthesizer - like a dog refusing to accept his lead.
It’s something that only you could ever truly appreciate. Because of who you are. Because of where you
are. And because of all the sacrifices it took you to get there. It’s someone who took the same ride – at 131
bpm – someone who knows how you feel.
After having released two EPs and toured Europe with his old band Champagne Riot (as a support act
for The Drums), Copenhagen based producer/ singer Caspar Bock was broke and forced to take a job in
advertising.
What money he made there was invested back into an arsenal of cheap but reliable synthesizers, drum
machines and samplers from the 1979-1986 era. To prepare for a comeback to pop music that would
stretch beyond the potential of your regular EDM sample pack or laptop synthesizer.
„The idea is to make pop songs that come from the heart - using real hardware equipment instead of
software programs,“ says Caspar Bock. Night Sports is a reinvention of the real thing. Pop minimalism
handcrafted on machines. Wrapped in plastic and fueled by blood. „I am not afraid to call this pop music.
I don‘t need to put another ‚sub cultural‘ label on it. My luck is that there‘s nothing I love more than the
three and a half minute pop song. That means I can make super catchy pop music without the slightest
compromise. There‘s simply nothing in this world I love more,“ he continues.
Some call him a demonic Rick Astley. But he‘s a much bigger fan of The KLF, Saint Etienne and
Gothenburg’s pop scene (from The Tough Alliance to Ace of Base).
Night Sports video „Kids In Europe“
Night Sports‘ video of his latest single „Kids in Europe“ has an almost poetic genesis. It is based on a lost, and
now recovered videotape from Kosovo, which was recorded in the 90ies. „It was all down to a guy called DJ Njeri
who was the first to introduce the local kids to the electronic techno sounds of London, Berlin, Chicago and Detroit.
He organised some dance competitions - and the first of them - from 1993 - was filmed on VHS. We don‘t know by
whom,“ explains Caspar Bock. „My good friend Morten Lykke Larsen found the clip (of the lost and rediscovered
tape), which was uploaded to Youtube. He then edited it into the Kids In Europe video.“
In Night Sports‘ opinion the beauty of the video is, that these kids were doing their own interpretation of what they
probably thought ‘the regular kids in Europe‘ were doing on a Friday night at the same time in 1993. „The song Kids
In Europe is about destiny and being young, hopeful and fearful at the same time.“
