Winter, 2015 269-637-5062 - 73303 8th Avenue, South Haven, MI www.al-van.org Our mission is to compassionately serve the companion animals in our community by providing the best shelter, adoptive homes, education and resources available. All About Making A Difference Al-Van Humane Society Board of Directors Lisa Galdikas, President Lisa Kozicki, Vice-President Renee Looman, Secretary Kelly Elvin, Treasurer Directors Grace Gilmore Kathy Korse Tim Kotas Gary Krier Linnay Minnard Cathy Novak Glenn Sperry Staff Jennifer Nuernberg Executive Director Angela Miedema Animal Care Coordinator If you have ever had a moment when you questioned your significance, this Paw Prints issue is for you! The beginning of a new season is always a good time to reflect back on the accomplishments of the previous season, and looking back has been humbling, inspiring, and motivating. So many people and businesses have, in many ways, made such a difference to Al-Van and the animals we serve. From donating to and sponsoring events, attending fundraisers, holding golf outings and digging for diamonds, creating a special wine, holding food drives, donating supplies for our new building, photographing and spending time with our animals, donating items to our resale shop, and fostering an animal in need; you get the idea. The list is endless and our appreciation is hard to put into words. So, here’s to celebrating YOU and your significant contribution to enhancing the lives of the homeless animals we serve in our no kill shelter. We especially look forward to showing you what a difference you have made through your C.A.R.E.S. contributions. Every dollar you choose to donate to our C.A.R.E.S. capital campaign goes toward our efforts to create a warm and inviting place to shop for resale items and a thoughtful caring space for the animals in our care waiting for their forever home. YOU make the difference. Climbing perches for the free roaming cat room at the new Adoption Center, handcrafted and donated by Jim Grosse and Bonnie Socash. Rescued Treasures will be moving to the new Blue Star location the week of Nov. 16th. Our Open House will be held Dec. 6th from 12-5pm. YOU TOO CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE AS A VOLUNTEER From the heart of a retired teacher, turned Al-Van volunteer, Terry McGarr I had been a teacher for 30 years but with the changes in curriculums and newer computer technology, I knew it was time to retire. However, I knew that I would always miss the kids. I was having a difficult time. One afternoon I ran into a good friend, Cathy Novak. She told me that Al-Van needed volunteers to help socialize the dogs. After an orientation, I arrived on my first day ready to go. The office staff asked me what kind of dog I would like to start with and I said, “A real dog!” They all looked at each other, smiled and said, “Rocky.” Rocky was a tan, amazingly strong pit bull mix. He also had absolutely no self-control. The thing is, I was immediately drawn to his goofy charisma. He pulled me out to the dog park, and we became tangled in his leash, to the amusement of another volunteer watching me closely. Rocky showed his affection by jumping up to lick my face while occasionally getting his teeth in the way. I thought playing fetch with a tennis ball would help him burn off some energy. He ran, grabbed it, and proceeded to knock me right on my rear end. We tried that twice, same result. In short, Rocky was a mess, apparently he had dodged the needle, so to speak, at least once. Still, there was something very special about Rocky. Day after day, week after week, even month after month, Rocky and I worked together. We made some progress. He was an intelligent dog. He saw other dogs going to families while he was always left behind. One day I began to think about the word socialize and what it really meant. On a hunch I put Rocky in my car and we drove downtown, which is hard to do with a 70lb dog in your lap, licking your face. What happened was pretty incredible. I put an “Adopt Me” vest on him and as we walked around more and more, people would come up to talk to him. They would tell him how handsome he was and what a good boy he was. He learned that if he sat still he would get scratched behind the ears or maybe even a treat. The hardware store employees loved him and always gave him treats. Best of all, he stopped jumping on me and using my arm as a play thing. He did pee on a $70 blanket at Decadent Dogs (we never returned). It didn’t take long before Rocky became the “true man about town.” We celebrate at the Arby’s drive thru. It took a few tries but Rocky is now living with a wonderful, loving family, complete with children and a large yard. Oh, and the volunteer that was watching me closely on my first day. That was Phyllis Graham. She told me I had what it takes for the big dogs. We’ve become great friends. I still miss Rocky sometimes. Through the eyes of a child, by the Torzewski family Alexander Torzewski, age 9, became an Al-Van Humane Society volunteer in 2014. Although he resides primarily in Chicago, Alexander spends many weekends and vacations in South Haven. He has helped with adoptions for 25 cats and 2 dogs (with no returns) during his first year of service. Alexander was introduced to Al-Van by dedicated volunteer Catherine Maize. When Catherine brought him to Al-Van the first time, Alexander fell in love immediately and participated in the next volunteer orientation with his parents. He and his parents volunteer whenever they are in town. Alexander focuses on cat socialization which benefits his adoption efforts. Understanding each cat’s personality, behavior, and habits Alexander, shown with Coco, enjoying time together. enables him to help a family find the perfect match. Alexander asks visitors questions such as: desired relationship they are looking for in a pet, age of children in the home, and other pets at home, before making suggestions on a cat that might be right for them. This is helpful as adopters often have just thought about breed and appearance, and don’t think about if the specific cat would adapt well to their household. The goal is not adoption under any circumstance; it is helping to establish a lasting relationship that includes both a happy family and a happy cat. Alexander enjoys getting to know each of the cats and helping them to get prepared for adoption. He also enjoys helping cat lovers find the companionship that they seek. It is also important to enrich the lives of the cats waiting for adoption, some of whom call Al-Van home for months. Alexander does not have a cat at home because his rescue dog, Moe, would not tolerate one. Alexander’s advice for children interested in volunteering at Al-Van is to do it because your help is needed! Remember that children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult who has completed Al-Van volunteer orientation too, so behind every child volunteer is at least one supportive adult volunteer. MAKING A DIFFERENCE THROUGH DONATIONS During this season of giving, you will find many different opportunities to truly make a difference. Here are several opportunities to consider where your contribution will directly and positively impact Al-Van’s mission to compassionately serve the companion animals in our community. PROVIDING FOR AL-VAN THROUGH YOUR PLANNED GIVING/ ESTATE PLANS A planned gift can be an endearing and lasting legacy of your support to Al-Van Humane Society. The most common ways to provide a planned gift are: Making a bequest in your will as a specific dollar amount or property to go to Al-Van Humane Society, a percentage of the total value of your estate or the remainder of the estate, after all expenses and other bequests have been made. Naming Al-Van Humane Society as a beneficiary from a bank account, insurance policy, or retirement plans/accounts such as an IRA, Keogh Plan, or other qualified plans; and Creating a charitable remainder trust, whereby the remaining principal is gifted to Al-Van Humane Society. IN-KIND DONATIONS Al-Van Humane Society is blessed to receive numerous in-kind donations. We have a wish list on Amazon.com with items that help keep our shelter operating. In addition, our resale shop, Rescued Treasures, operates solely on in-kind donations. We are happy to share pet food donations you make with We Care Food Bank, which we believe is an important step in helping struggling families keep their pet in their home. (Due to safety and contamination issues, we are not able to use open bags of food. In an attempt to keep our resident animals “regular,” we try to feed them only Purina products.) Or consider purchasing a gift card from Walmart, Tractor Supply, Meijer or Menards and we’ll do the heavy lifting. Gifting Al-Van in these ways can have significant tax advantages to you and your heirs. Be sure to talk to your estate planner. DONATING STOCKS, BONDS, MUTUAL FUNDS Did you know that Al-Van Humane Society accepts gifts of stocks, bonds, and/or mutual funds? Donations of this type will help Al-Van build a solid foundation for our long-term sustainability as well as provide the donor with a generous tax deduction. If the securities have increased in value, you receive a charitable deduction for the full market value as well as not incurring capital gains tax (subject to Internal Revenue Service deductible limitations). If the securities have decreased in value, you can sell the stock to realize the loss and take any allowed deduction for tax purpose. You generate a charitable deduction by donating the cash proceed from the sale to the Al-Van Humane Society. Two young entrepreneurs who each made a difference through their efforts to raise funds for Al-Van. RESCUED TREASURES Al-Van’s resale shop is a major contributor to funds raised for operating costs for the shelter. Please remember us when you are cleaning out your basement, remodeling your home, deciding to “de-clutter,” or moving. We will be happy to make arrangements to pick up your tax deductible donated items if you cannot drop them off at the store. Just call us at 269-639-8180. Every dollar you spend at Rescued Treasures also goes toward animal care. Enjoy it all year round, but this Home Tour allows you to see it beautifully decorated for the holidays with a different tree in every room. Together they turned it back into the charming and delightful home you see today. The Gibson-Hardina home at 6303 113th, Fennville, is a recreation of a nineteenth century, Italianate country house that was built in 2009. The owners used period appropriate architectural salvage and earth friendly building materials. The Kingsley House B & B at 626 W. Main St, Fennville, is an 1886 historic Victorian home offering romantic charm and gracious hospitality. Denny Olson’s private workshop at 70700 6th Ave is transformed into Santa’s workshop for this year’s Home Tour. You may even get a glimpse of the big guy himself!
