MONOCACY PISTOL CLUB
Monocacy Pistol Club Post Office Box 1377 Frederick, Maryland 21702-1377 NEWSLETTER- JULY 2013 PRESIDENT’S CORNER President Tom Naugler, (301) 540-3532 Summer is here, and our ranges are looking better than ever. This is attributable in large part to two successful work days on March 23 and June 16. We now have canopies on the multipurpose range, the pins range, and the steel range to provide relief from the elements. There are still a few tasks remaining, but they won’t require a scheduled work day. Over the next several weeks I will be working on an online methodology for managing individual work assignments for volunteers who need to get their work time in. [email protected] Vice President Chuck Regan, (301) 806-9173 [email protected] Treasurer Greg Talamini, (301) 846-0627 [email protected] Secretary Linda Newcomer, (301) 570-3987 [email protected] See you at the range… Chief Range Officer George Bransom, (301)253-4344 [email protected] Tom Membership Chairman Jason Ashmore, (301) 304-0098 [email protected] VICE - PRESIDENT COLUMN No bullets? Make your own Anybody who has been shooting regularly over the past year is painfully aware of the ammunition shortage. There is a supply, but it has been outstripped by demand. Lots of us are reloaders, and are therefore less subject to the whims of your local ammunition retailer (except for .22s, of course). What to do when even the components run low? We need primers, powder and bullets. Brass cases last and last, and we reuse those. How about primers? We’re pretty much dependent on the component manufacturers for those, but when you can find some, buy them in bulk and save money on the purchase. Same goes for powder – you pay less per pound when you buy 4 pounds or more at once. For bullets, you have more control – if you make your own – by casting them. For about half the cost of a new gun you can get all you need to equip yourself to cast your own bullets. In the course of a few hours you can cast enough bullets to get you through a year of regular shooting. The raw material is any kind of lead, really, to include cheap used wheel weights, and it’s easier to come by these days than the finished product. Casting bullets used to be a given for many shooters, but as more quality bullet manufacturers entered the market, its popularity faded. These days, it’s worth considering “rolling your own”. See you at the Range, Chuck 1 Monocacy Pistol Club Newsletter MAY 2013 Edition SECRETARY ‘S COLUMN CHIEF RANGE SAFETY REPORT We had a great turn out for the banquet and that was really good. REPEATED REQUESTS FROM LAST MONTH: The range looks really great after this last work day. Thanks for all those who came out to work and make things look so nice. 1. Clean up your messes including spent shells. If you are shooting .22 rimfire, sweep the brass off the walkways. Brooms are available. I am still seeing .22 brass and some center-fire brass left on the walkways. BULLS-EYE COLUMN 2. If you carry tables or chairs down range on the Multi-Purpose Range, please carry them back when you are finished. We have been having a great turn out for the .22 league on Wednesday nights, Thank you all. 3. Waivers for non-members need only be done once each calendar year per visitor. You do not need to do a new one every time you bring the same person during that year. My 1800 matches on Saturday have also been having a good turn out. Starting in July we will be having our Harrisburg practice matches on Saturdays, see the schedule. Anyone interested in going to Harrisburg to shoot the Walt Wise match, come out and practice on the Harrisburg targets. We always have a good time that weekend. This year the Walt Wise match is on Sept. 21st and 22nd. As soon as I receive the match flyer I will make up extra copies and have them on the Bulls-eye range. 4. If the trash can(s) are full, please empty them into the dumpster. I have gotten information that some members are politely correcting other members when they observe a violation of the range rules. This is great and I strongly encourage it, but be sure what you are talking about is actually a range rule. Take the time to re-read the range rules. They are on the web site and posted on each range. I have checked with my supplier and am unable to get .22 ammo, at this time. I have heard that it will soon becoming available, but I don’t know when. I will be away July 7th to 15th, I will check again when I return. I look forward to seeing you all on the range for this new shooting season. I want to thank those members who came to the work day on June 15. Many hands made it a much easier day. In addition there is always a need to get work accomplished at the range. This work will fill your four hour work requirement, but you must list it in the work log in the stat shed on the multi-purpose range. Some suggestions are: I encourage you to contact me by phone (301) 570-3987, or email at [email protected] with any questions or feedback. 1. Terracing and channeling of runoff water between the PPC and Bulls-eye ranges to direct water into the drainage pipe under the parking lot. Thank you, Linda 2 Monocacy Pistol Club Newsletter MAY 2013 Edition 2. Continuous grass cutting- I have sharpened the blades, put air in the tractor tires and made sure the tractor, hand mower, and weed whacker are running. If the gas can is empty, please fill it and get the receipt to the treasurer for reimbursement. See you at the range. George Bransom 3. Help with any of the matches. E/mail [email protected] 4. The critter stands need to be lengthened so they are taller. If we have a plumber, they could thread the bottom of the shorter stands (1.5" pipe), add a coupling and a 1 foot piece of pipe below. That would move them up so the bullets would more likely impact in the backstop. 301-253-4344 TREASURER’S CORNER If you are interested in tackling any one of those projects, let me know. Also if you see something that needs fixing, go ahead and fix it. The club will pay for any materials. These are jobs I need you to head up, recruit helpers, and get done. Income : $459.00 Expenses: $2459.67 Checking Balance: $30,779.62 It is good to be back. The club grounds looks good, the work day went well. I hope we all enjoy a safe and fun summer. In addition the match directors are always looking for help. You do not need to be a Monocacy RSO to help, just to run matches. See you at the range. Don't wait until December to try to find ways to fulfill your work requirement. Greg Talamini I encourage you to contact me by phone (301) 846-0627, or email at [email protected] with any questions or feedback. Monocacy Pistol Club meetings are held at the Holly Hills Country Club on the 3rd Tuesday each month at 7:00 PM. meetings are held in the FSK room on the top floor. There are lots of great matches scheduled, work days and plenty of general work that needs doing around the club.
