Jill Barber’s “Chansons,” is an album of her own interpretations of classic French songs
from both France and Québec. Jill meticulously curated the repertoire herself, selecting
material from a long list of over thirty songs, drawn both from her own collection, and
from recommendations from friends within the Francophone community.
“I spent time with the songs. I strolled the streets with Aznavour, I sat in a sidewalk cafe
with Piaf, poured a stiff drink with Gainsbourg, and I became absolutely enamoured and
inspired by French music in the process.”
With her producer and arranger Drew Jurecka, Jill whittled the list down to the twelve
songs that make up the album. Each song is treated lovingly, and with due respect by
Jill and Drew, who endeavored to keep the spirit of the original song in place. “They’re
classics for a reason. I wanted to lend my voice and offer my interpretation, expressing
how the song particularly makes me feel”.
The first single off Chansons is “Sous le ciel de Paris” a song inspired by the 1951 French
film of the same name and made famous by Piaf. “For me, this song captures the spirit
of French street music, the drama, the tenderness, the romanticism, the playfulness. It’s
the kind of song that instantly transports me to the cobblestone streets of Paris… or at
least the Paris of my imagination.”
Jill is poised to continue her burgeoning love affair with her French audience and
Francophiles alike.

Chansons, le nouvel album de Jill Barber est un disque sur lequel elle réinterprète des classiques du
répertoire français et québécois. Attentionnée et minutieuse, l’interprète ontarienne, rapidement
devenue une favorite du public québécois, a d’abord soigneusement sélectionné ses morceaux,
dressant une liste de plus de trente chansons tirées non seulement de sa propre collection, mais
aussi de celles de ses nouveaux amis francophones. Après quelques discussions et séances de studio avec son réalisateur et arrangeur, Drew Jurecka,
elle a fini par réduire la liste de 30 titres aux 12 qui composeraient le disque. «Il y a tant de
morceaux incroyables que j’aurais adoré enregistrer! s’exclame Jill. Toutefois, je sens que cette
sélection représente bien ce que j’aime dans la chanson française, que ce soient les ballades
sensuelles et romantiques, ou les valses taquines et fantaisistes.»

C’est aussi avec amour que la francophile artiste et son réalisateur ont abordé chaque morceau,
faisant tout ce qui était en leur pouvoir pour garder l’esprit de l’original bien en place. «Ces
classiques ne sont pas des classiques pour rien! Je voulais leur prêter ma voix, sans les dénaturer,
afin d’exprimer toutes les émotions qu’ils faisaient naître en moi», explique Jill. Ensuite, Drew
a pu ajouter sa propre vision aux chansons par les magnifiques arrangements et la réalisation
réfléchie.
Mais, pour sa créatrice, Chansons n’aurait pas été complet s’il n’avait pas comporté son lot de titres
québécois. Le premier extrait du disque, c’est d’ailleurs Quand les hommes vivront d’amour. En effet, même
si la composition de Raymond Lévesque a été revisitée plusieurs fois par diverses voix à travers les ans, il
semblait naturel, pour l’interprète, de l’inclure sur son album. Surtout compte tenu de la situation mondiale
actuelle. «Cette chanson véhicule un message de paix, dit-elle. Et je crois qu’on a besoin d’en entendre
davantage par les temps qui courent…»

Si certaines histoires d’amour ne durent, en somme, que quelques instants, celle entre Jill et
son public francophone n’est guère passagère. Elle est faite pour durer. «Chanter en français
m’a permis de redécouvrir ma voix, mon instrument, confie Jill. Cette langue, surtout lorsqu’elle
est chantée, me semble particulièrement magnifique. C’est un immense plaisir pour moi de me

Alegre, Brazil in 1989, Dom started her musical exploration with the piano around age five. Dom’s

Sometimes a great album slips through the cracks. Critics and astute music fans might find it, fellow
