Onry Ozzborn
Fake Four
Duo
For over a decade, Seattle based emcee Michael S. Martinez aka Onry Ozzborn of the group Grayskul
(Rhymesayers Ent) has been known for a brooding style of hip-hop. Today, Onry preps his fifth--and boldest--album to date, called DUO on Fake Four Inc. With a guest on each track, Onry’s features range from
Homeboy Sandman and Aesop Rock to the indie musician Nathan Quiroga (of Iska Dhaaf).”I didn’t plan it
this way,” explains Onry. “I got a couple features who I really wanted and then, as I laid out the tracks, it
became a story. Other names popped into my head who would round out the album.” In addition, Onry recruits a wide range of producers--SmokeM2D6, Void Pedal Latrell Jamesand Jack Rylands--which results
in a hip-hop album imbued with electronic, folk, and punk. On the first track, “Nineteen” with Aesop Rock,
Onry sets the tone by collaborating with an artist who’s always pushed the boundaries musically. On “Flee
the Colony,” Onry and Nathan Quiroga take a very different turn towards the indie rock. “No time to Waste,”
featuring Living Legends crew member Eligh, is a motivational, up-tempo call to living life for today. “Both
Eligh & I have made it through rough times,” explains Onry. So he was the perfect emcee to collaborate with
on this. Rounding out the album, there’s “Firefly”, featuring LA rapper Pigeon John which is walk into the
lighter side of life. Onry got his start in 1997 in Seattle as part of the supergroup Oldominion, considered to
be the definitive hip-hop collective of the Northwest. Starting in 2000, Onry formed the group Grayskul with
JFK and released titles like Bloody Radio and Graymaker, among many others on Rhymesayers Ent. Later, as
a solo artist Onry released noted projects such as: Alone The Grey Area, The Gigantics, and Hold On For Dear
Life. Today, Onry has joined a perfect place for him, the Fake Four Inc family, where he started his own label
Ted Records. Onry is also releasing a short thirteen film version of his project, called “Soundlapse,” which
will be available mid February, along with an accompanying Polaroid book.

Northern Spy
Interventions
West African rhythms collide with just intonation guitars, art-fire saxophone, minimalist grooves, and collaged zapdowns on Interventions, the powerful third full-length from Baltimore’s Horse Lords. The band’s
Northern Spy debut is also the first Horse Lords album to explore the classic studio-as-weaponry strategies
of yore, mapping the quartet’s raw Baltimore lightning onto the experimental musique concrète territory surveyed by elder heads like Faust and This Heat. Founded at the turn o’ the ‘teens by Andrew Bernstein (saxophone/percussion), Max Eilbacher (bass/electronics), Owen Gardner (guitar), and Sam Haberman (drums),
Horse Lords quickly established themselves as avant-heavies with the two extended tracks of their powerful self-titled debut (Ehse Records, 2012). Playing custom electric guitars and basses refretted by Gardner,
the band’s rolling polyrhythms chime with the strange and distinct harmonies of just intonation inspired by
the master La Monte Young and other heroes. Where the earliest Horse Lords releases, also including Hidden Cities (NNA Tapes, 2014) concentrated on linear performance, a trio of Mixtape cassettes (self-released,
2012-2014) pointed the way towards the newest turn in the Horse Lords saga. Interventions is (as they say)
a new phase Horse Lords album with Bernstein’s saxophone and the microtonal guitars pinging through the
stereo mix with single-minded purpose. Horse Lords is a band, its members serving a range of functions
over multiple axes, from the audible (writing and performing music) to the structural (altering their instruments), to the soundscape in between (editing together Interventions’ threaded mini-suites). Floating at the
boundaries of composition and improvisation, electronics and performance, the underground and the vast
improbable 21st century indie mainstream, Horse Lords exist in none of these places and all of them. More
accurately, they exist on Interventions, the album you now hold in your proverbial hands, perhaps noticing
the reflection of the imaginary room’s light reflecting on the LP cover, ready to cue up as you find yourself in
the new beyond of tomorrow’s ecstasies and today’s Horse Lords.

American Dreamer
This 10-song debut album from one of Brooklyn’s finest rock ‘n’ roll bands lives up to the expectations set by
their previous EP. The arrangements here are simple and uncluttered, with plenty of room for singer Jeremy
Fury to dip his vocals in slapback echo reminiscent of Sun Records-era Elvis Presley, and for the backing
quartet to bring out the best in songs that reflect the influences of Leiber & Stoller, Eddie Cochran, and The
Del-Lords. While the sound retains a ‘50’s-’60s retro vibe, the lyrics apply themselves to universal and even
modern concerns (“Cam Girl” says: “Your profile came up on my MacBook screen.”)

Streetlife
Precarious bon vivants, gifted musicians, radical guys – VON SPAR are many things, but above all, they are one
of the most amazing bands in the realms that the British music press once baptized as Krautrock. Sebastian
Blume, Jan Philipp Janzen, Christopher Marquez and Phillip Tielsch have in past been praised even more than
the revenants of the genre (in 2012, together with Stephen Malkmus, before the watering eyes of CAN founding
members Irmin Schmidt and Jaki Liebezeit, they provided a reinterpretation of the album “Ege Bamyasi” at
the Cologne Weekend Festival) – even if the four were inspired equally by techno, synthpop, noise, post- punk
and new music. “The concept of the collective VON SPAR seems to be to torpedo listeners’ expectations from
album to album,” wrote the German newspaper TAZ about their last album “Foreigner”. And once again, much
is new on “Streetlife”. Four of the eight pieces were recorded with the Canadian singer Chris Cummings, aka
Marker Starling (formerly Mantler), whose fragile voice at moments recalls that of the great communist and
musician Robert Wyatt. Other pieces feature the voice of Ada (Pampa Records) and of Scout Niblett (Drag City),
for whom Jan Philipp Janzen has played drums on various tours (as he has for the likes of Owen Pallett and
The Field). “Streetlife” has emerged as a heterogeneous album ranging from melodic piano disco (“Chain Of
Command”), to tripped out soundscapes (“Hearts Fear”), to grandiose soft rock (“Try Though We Might”). One
might call it music for a better world, if that didn’t sound so lofty. Yet VON SPAR are not at all lofty, they are wide
awake. This is not escapism, but life in the streets. And that’s how they live it.

Bliss
On “Bliss”, Eric Schaefer and his band The Shredz blend the fusion jazz of the sixties with the jazz dub of
the nineties and the club music of today to concoct an explosive hubble-bubble of a magic brew. Although it
sometimes sounds like it, it’s not voodoo, it is merely the logical continuation of what made Schaefer’s playing so unique from the outset: style and good taste, skills and know-how, complex compositions and improvisatory passion. Rooted in hardcore and matured in jazz, Schaefer plays a range that goes way beyond the
scope of any academic colloquium. With John-Dennis Renken’s soaring trumpet tones and Volker Meitz’s
gurgling organ sounds, The Shredz invoke the spirit of the electric Miles Davis sessions. Schaefer and bassist John Eckhardt switch back and forth between feverish Bitches Brew Groove, Laswellian Dub fusions and
pulsating club sounds. “We wanted to go on a trip together, achieve a kind of trance state,” says Schaefer of
the recording process. “And you can’t get there without factors like repetition and groove.” On this journey
the tracks often formed themselves out of unplanned moments that arose when jamming together. “After
all the Shredz concerts, we just celebrated our joy of jamming and improvising for the recording.” For the
band’s sound, the collective interweaving is more important than the individual expression in the solos. In
this way, the band is the theme on “Bliss”.

Voyage
Sugar Blue has played and recorded with musicians ranging from Willie Dixon to Stan Getz to Frank Zappa
to Johnny Shines to Bob Dylan, he is perhaps best known for his signature riff and solo on the Rolling
Stones’ hit “Miss You.”
Born James Whiting - he was raised in Harlem, New York, where his mother was a singer and dancer at the
fabled Apollo Theater. He spent his childhood among the musicians and show people who knew his mother,
including the great Billie Holiday, and decided that he wanted to be a performer. Sugar Blue began his career
as a street musician and made his first recordings in 1975 with legendary blues figures Brownie McGhee
and Roosevelt Sykes.
The album will be all originals except for one Ray Charles cover. Voyage is full of what makes Sugar Blue
and his band so special; passionate song-writing, tight arrangements and of course Sugar Blue’s out of this
world harmonica playing.

As If Apart, the long-awaited sequel to Chris Cohen’s 2012 soft psych garden of unearthly alter-pop earworms and studio-sonic delights Overgrown Path, follows on its predecessor with another bittersweet ensemble of dreamy, complex songs. Pushing the idiosyncrasies of Cohen’s melodic and rhythmic approach

New Start Again
“New Start Again” is FINALLY available domestically for eager & discerning listeners. “New Start Again”
was the band’s first full-length offering after their debut single, surprising many & no one with it’s sprawling range of melodic twists & turns. From opener “Through The D” - which starts with a patient drum
pulse before launching into the infectious jangle of guitarists Rupert Edwards and Alistair McKay’s chiming
chords - to casual anthem & album closer “Head Back” (penned by bassist Al Montfort), the band holds the
listener’s attention steady and true with inventive and memorable songs.

“Calendar Days” FINALLY available domestically for eager & discerning listeners. Building on the promise
of their debut, “Calendar Days” a truly communal album with each band member contributing hit after hit,
from the punchy first single “Alice” (penned by bassist Al Montfort) to Al McKay & Rupert Edwards’ elegant
ditties & pop bangers like “Water Damage” “Calendar Days” & “Lime Green Shirt”. The real highlight is
drummer/guitarist Steph Hughes whose vocal duties on the Edwards-penned title track & duet on “Two Year
Lease” add a melodic richness. Not to mention her absolute classic tune “Gap Life” a beguiling & charmingly casual take on “Australian-ness”, cementing “Calendar Days” as an unquestionable modern classic.
People started to take notice too, as the band was nominated for The Age’s Music Victoria Awards for Best

Spagat der Liebe
Klaus Johann Grobe continue to avoid easy classification with “Spagat der Liebe”, the follow-up to their
mind-scrambling 2013 debut album “Im Sinne der Zeit”. The sinister, late-night grooves present of their
debut have been tempered a bit, in favor of somewhat sunnier dispositions, calling to mind an ecstatic
party somewhere in sunny Ibiza. Tunes like album opener “Ein Guter Tag” & first single “Wo Sind” feel like
a warm up, preparing the listener for the four-on-the-floor propulsion of “Rosen des Abschieds” - a song
tailor-made to sweat to. Elsewhere the fragile “Heut Abend nur” (“Tonight Only”) & the synth-tickled “Ohne
Mich” - which is closest the band has come to an honest to goodness pop tune - guides the listener by the
hand towards floor fillers like “Geschichten aus erster Hand” and the absolutely DEVASTATING groove of
“Liebe am Strand”, which is anchored by a rubbery bass groove & a killer flute solo that takes it over the
event horizon.

Light Enough
Jaye Bartell’s move to Brooklyn, NY in 2013, as well as the work Spalding Gray and Eileen Myles, heavily
influence the content presented on his latest record, Light Enough. Bartell spent about a year secluded in his
Greenpoint bedroom, piecing together the intricate tunes and gentle melodies that furnish his new record.
The songs on Light Enough encompass the processes of aspiration, pursuit, and fulfillment, if only to find
that “[P]eople don’t change. They only stand more revealed,” as Charles Olson writes in Maximus Poems.
In the album opener, “G & Me,” Bartell sings of the joyful illusions of escape, “a whole new life” that’s recognized, without bitterness as a “whole new lie.” “Light Enough” is a declaration of sufficiency, as if to say,
Let this be enough then, and if it isn’t now, then it never will be: “I’m ready to come down,” he sings. The
record as a whole takes as a kind of informal edict a line from Eileen Myles’ Chelsea Girls: “I have waited all
my life for permission. I feel it growing in my breast. A war is storming and it is behind me and I am moving
my forces into light.”

Psychic Temple ‘III’ completes the transition from avant-jazz solo project to a working band constructed
around timeless songs that draw upon the rich history of classic American soul, blues, and folk. Equally
immersed in the sound of California’s canyons and the swamps of the deep South, Psychic Temple’s cult
leader/guitarist Chris Schlarb steps out of the shadows and up to the microphone for the first time with
astonishing results. Maintaining Psychic Temple’s affinity for nuance and delicate minimalism, ‘III’ exhibits
a new directness centered around Schlarb’s agile guiding voice. While the album places his unfolding vocal
melodies and narratives in the foreground, ‘III’ subverts easy categorization by sustaining the collaborative,
exploratory spirit of ‘Psychic Temple’ and ‘II’. Culled from sessions recorded at home in Los Angeles and the
legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama - ‘III’ includes contributions and performances from
Spooner Oldham (Neil Young, Bob Dylan), David Hood (J.J. Cale, Aretha Franklin), Mike Watt (Minutemen, The
Stooges), Avi Buffalo, Nedelle Torrisi (Sufjan Stevens), Elliot Bergman (Wild Belle, NOMO), Dave Easley (Brian
Blade Fellowship) and many more. Coming together quickly and intuitively, the album was mixed over three
days with Ronan Chris Murphy (King Crimson).

In 2012 Trevor Montgomery released Navigated Like the Swan, his first album under the Young Moon moniker. According to The Wall Street Journal “It engulfs the listener - and sometimes even the narrator...”, while
Consequence of Sound called it “...powerful and heartfelt...”. Soon after its release, the relationship that
inspired those songs unraveled, leaving Montgomery at an all-time low, living on a houseboat out of necessity, and unable to write songs, or even play guitar. “That part of me was broken. My life was pretty broken as
well” says Montgomery. Though he eased back into the habit of playing music on a daily basis, something
was still missing. Drummer Syam Zapalowski was a Young Moon fan, and started pursuing Montgomery
about playing live shows with him. Zapalowski’s persistence and encouragement led Young Moon to expand to include Montgomery’s longtime collaborator Danny Grody on guitars and synths, and Jeff Moller on
bass. “It was a natural progression for Young Moon. I needed to have more dynamics and volume to tell the
stories the way they were laying out in my head,” says Montgomery. Inspired by the newfound potential of
a full band, the songs that make up the new album Colt started coming together.

projects, in a program compiled with unerring good taste by the Artistic Director, pianist Jan Lundgren. On
30 July 2015, he himself took to the festival stage together with bassist Mattias Svensson and the Bonfiglioli Weber String Quartet to pay tribute to one of the founding fathers of Swedish jazz music: pianist Jan
Johansson (1931 - 1968). Alongside the recently deceased Bengt-Arne Wallin, Johansson set the direction
for Swedish - yes even Scandinavian - jazz and how it is perceived in the rest of the world, with his recourse
to the indigenous folk music. His duet recording from 1963 (with bassist Georg Riedel) “Jazz på svenska”
was to become a timeless guiding light for this kind of Nordic improvisatory music.

In All That Drifts In From Summit Down
Landscapes both seen and felt, real and imagined, lie at the heart of In All That Drifts From Summit Down,
the vast debut full-length release from nomadic duo A Dead Forest Index. Comprised of brothers Adam
Sherry (vocals/guitar) and Sam Sherry (drums/piano), the group crafts ethereal and intensely intimate compositions that defy trends and labeling, instead shaping an aural experience as organic as it is unpredictable.
Forsaking instrumental complexity in favor of richly dense vocals and an otherwise minimal palette, the
band evokes heaviness with the atmosphere they create rather than through blunt force. Teaming-up with
Sargent House on the heels of a recent European tour supporting labelmate Chelsea Wolfe, A Dead Forest
Index are poised to introduce their sound to a global audience in 2016. A Dead Forest Index was initially the
solo project of Adam Sherry, begun in 2008. By 2010, it had evolved into a collaboration, with Sam Sherry
supplying percussive depth to his brother’s distinctively hymnal approach to vocals, itself characterized by
cyclical harmonies and experiments with drone. Untethered by place (or, for that matter, era), they’ve spent
the past few years developing their sound, touring extensively between 2012-2014, and issuing the EPs
“Antique” and “Cast of Lines” in the process. The latter was released by Jehnny Beth of Savages’ Pop Noire
label, a precursor to the collaborative Savages/A Dead Forest Index composition and performance titled “In
What I’m Seeing; the Sun” for the Barbican’s Station to Station Festival in 2015. In All That Drifts From Summit Down, their debut album, is a testimony to the sublime divinity of nature and the cold reality of time’s
passage. Unfolding over 13 tracks, the album imagines natural phenomena as poetic metaphor for the
human condition, the lyrics evoking stone, cold air, unyielding emptiness and erosion, while the enveloping
warmth of Adam Sherry’s layered, choral vocals makes for an intriguing contrast.

Antwood

Virtuous.scr
Antwood is the alias of Tristan Douglas - a Canadian whose releases so far have been on netlabels such as
Cocobass and B.YRSLF Division, initially under the name ‘Margaret Antwood’. These early recordings have
picked up interest from curious seekers of new music, with excitement from Fact magazine and a mention
in Vogue’s best music of 2015. He’s now dropped the punning female first name and been picked up by
Planet Mu for his first proper full-length, Virtuous.scr. The music on this album feels very modern, but doesn’t
feel genre specific or even created by a human at times. It has an obvious dark cartoonish cinematic feel to
it that hints at computer game music and anime soundtracks, but it’s as if the tracks are semi-autonomous
beings evolving as part of a larger eco-system: the sounds are mechanical, things uncoil, whirr and stretch,
strafe and crack around melodic segments, synthesised forms bouncing around the speakers, falling into
melody and then out again, full of colour and drama. Perhaps in this context It makes sense that Tristan is a microbiologist too - but also that the theme
he was inspired by when creating the album was centred around the development of an AI. A little later in the process it started to crystalize into the
idea of whether or not an AI can have a set of ethics, and if not, how close can it get to being like human intelligence? It comes through in the music
as the album becomes more melodic, almost sentimental at the end. Virtuous.scr also references the darker corners of the Internet, as reflected in
its track titles. Like all the best electronic music which isn’t entirely melodic, the listener is able to put their imagination right at the centre of the work
and can rest assured that the album will reward their attention. Virtuous.scr is full of rhythmic ideas, evocative, textural sound design and also has an
intriguing musical narrative - we’re sure that willing listeners will enjoy the ride!

“Like a meteor shooting across the horizon, the Third Power lit up the Detroit music scene with a ferocious
roar like no other group before them. But like all meteors, they only burned bright for a short while. Leaving
one 45, one full length album and a lasting legacy.” - from the liner notes by Willy Wilson The Third Power
were part of Vanguard Records’ shortlived but memorable sortie into the realm of Detroit’s “high energy”
rock milieu of the late 1960s. Signed by staff producer Sam Charters to the label in 1969, the Third Power’s
lone album for Vanguard today stands as one of the more memorable longplayers from the scene that
begat the MC5, Stooges, Frost and others. A power trio par excellence, the band first came together in 1965
but it was not until an extended sojourn “getting it together” at a farm on the outskirts of Detroit that their
powerful blend coalesced. Equal parts Cream, Hendrix and Detroit rama-lama, allied to a distinctive and
melodic songwriting ability, the Third Power started to make noise at regional hotspots like the Grande Ballroom in 1968. An obscure one-off single
for the Baron label preceded the recording of Believe in New York. Loaded with strong songcraft, imaginative arrangements and instrumental muscle,
the record showcased the band at its best, but a poor commercial showing upon release in 1969 exacerbated intra-band tension and spelled the end
for the Third Power by the turn of the decade. Frequently bootlegged in the past, this legitimate, definitive reissue of Believe not only sports superior
mastering from the original master tapes, but also almost a dozen bonus tracks, featuring their 1968 non-LP single, seven studio outtakes and two
storming on-location live recordings from the Grande Ballroom. Heavily illustrated liner notes tell the story of the Third Power with quotes from band

Wasting
New Zealand ethereal trip-pop six piece Doprah return with their highly anticipated debut album ‘Wasting’.
From the eerie, reed-filled depths of its’ conception and recorded over a period of three years following
2011’s Christchurch earthquake, the album’s atmosphere is dark, undulating and electric. Sounds throb,
crack, glisten and weave across a genre-melting sonic landscape. Wasting is a visionary debut - a powerful
statement of intent crafted by an unusually talented young band on a tiny island at the bottom of the world.

Island Universe Story
(Clear Silver Tinsel Vinyl)
Island Universe Story is a limited edition of clear, tinsel vinyl compilation of previously released Helado Negro
cassette releases. The previously released cassette EPs have been serving as a sub narrative behind the showcased broadcast of the full length release schedule. They are the subconscious whisperings, deep labyrinth of
dot-connecting and cartography for the diligent listeners into the inner workings. There are many collaborators
on Island Universe Story, including Laetitia Sader (Stereolab), Mikael Jorgensen (Wilco), and many more. This
active and frenetic collaboration embodies the spirit of the Island Universe Series: that music, like an island, has
many points of entry. Asthmatic Kitty Records is releasing particular iteration of Island Universe Story on limited
edition clear vinyl, which has been stamped with the tinsel used in Helado Negro’s recent live performances.

The Departing Of A Dream Vol. V
After ten years, legendary avant guitarist Loren Connors returns to his much acclaimed and beloved The
Departing of a Dream series. Initially based loosely as tribute to Miles Davis’ masterwork “He Loved Him
Madly,” Connors delves further into the inspiration to explore melody as a slow-moving spectrum of shades
projected against a fragile, often decaying ambiance. Volume Five continues the theme, as Connors coaxes
complex blues mutations and wide swathes of distant vibrating tones - not unlike the expressionistic cry of
Miles’ horn. The flutter of voices and din that seep in between the sustained notes transform into a choir as
only Connors can lead. The mini-album is presented as a 10-inch, housed in a purple sleeve with metallic
ink and download coupon. Audio mastering by Taylor Deupree at 12k and vinyl mastering by Jason Ward at
Chicago Mastering. One-time edition of 500 copies.

More Revery
In the year 2000 - shortly after releasing what would become his most iconic album, I See A Darkness - Will
Oldham aka Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy retreated to his family’s farmhouse with the majority that I See A Darkness lineup in tow to record a half dozen covers of some of Oldham’s favorite songs. The track listing is,
as expected, inspired and eclectic: John Phillips, PJ Harvey, Bill Withers, The Renderers, John Holt, and Tim
McGraw. Bonny Billy’s renditions are equally inspired and eclectic, ranging from slow-burning uneasiness
to uncharacteristic jubilance. Originally released exclusively on limited edition CD in the pre-MP3 era, More
Revery was gone before iTunes existed, and has not been available in any format since. On the occasion
of the 20th anniversary of Temporary Residence Ltd., we are honored to reissue this essential piece of the
Bonny Billy canon - now expanded to include rare live versions of the entire album!

AJ Cornell & Tim Darcy
NNA Tapes
Too Significant To Ignore
NNA is pleased to release a special collaboration between two of Montréal, Quebec’s finest. “Too
Significant To Ignore” unites Andrea-Jane Cornell, a prolific improviser and former CKUT Radio music
programming director, and Tim Darcy, best known as the guitarist/vocalist for Constellation Records’
four-piece post-punk band Ought. On this recording, the duo concoct a hazy bed of grey, melancholic
psychedelia using synthesizers, field recordings, processed accordion, and manipulated objects to
serve as a backdrop for Darcy’s deranged existential spoken word. Recalling the spirit of post-punk’s
more adventurous heroes such as Dome, The Shadow Ring, Sleaford Mods, and The Birthday Party,
“Too Significant To Ignore” occupies a similar territory where punk ideals intermingle with electronic
music and the avant-garde. AJ and Tim create a bleak sound world that lends itself well to the cold
concrete and icy ambiance of Canadian metropolitan living. Subtle melodies coexist alongside smoldering, buzzing drones, sublime electronics, and indiscernible field recordings, all smudged together
to forge a slow-paced swirling mass. A beautifully peaceful sadness is revealed, creating a perfect
atmosphere of cosmic dread and a cinematic sensitivity that compliments the unfolding observational dialogue. Darcy’s vocal delivery comes across as part Ferlinghetti, part Henry Rollins, and part
Bill Hicks. His drawled, surrealist lyrics ooze forth like a loogie sliding down a brick wall, reflecting a
bored disgust and an isolation from society. He touches on apathetic voyeurism, city life, regret, selfreflection, human disconnection via accelerated technology, and the bleakness of modern sterility. The
delivery and the content of the lyrics impeccably conveys the drab routine and impersonality of dayto-day life, like the disoriented narration of an existential crisis. Using repetition as a weapon, Darcy
drills phrases into the listener’s brain, helping the lyrics recede into the music to create a coherent
unity between the electronic ambiance and dry vocalizations. “Too Significant To Ignore” is a unique
and non-referential pairing of electronics and spoken word, yielding an invigorating listen that stands
on its own amongst new underground music. AJ and Tim succeed in communicating the confusing
psychedelia inherent in the mundanity of modern human existence.

Heavy Hearts, Hard Fists
North Carolina-bred and New Orleans-based Nikki Hill will release her new album ‘Heavy Hearts, Hard
Fists’ via Deep Fryed Records. Buoyed by her band’s roaring boogie that’s equal parts Staple Singers
and AC/ DC, the new album sees Nikki exude a self-assured swagger as her fiery rasp preaches the
rock & roll gospel: late nights, hot licks, and intoxicating love. Raised in thechurch choir and steeped
in R&B and garage rock rumble, Nikki Hill is aspitfire with the soul-drenched voice of Etta James and
thetattooed,beehived- hair aura of Cramps’ guitarist Poison Ivy. ‘Heavy Hearts, Hard Fists’ is a showcase for Nikki’s unfettered versatility, whether it’s thedebauchedbluster of “Struttin’”, the Stonesy barnburning blues of “(Let Me Tell You ‘Bout) LUV”, or the touching soul ballad “Nothin’ With You”. Just a
couple years ago, Nikki Hill was a bartender and personal trainer with an affinity for punk and a deep
love for classic R&B. At her husband (and now guitar-player) Matt Hill’s behest, she stepped out from
behind the bar and onto the stage. The response has been ecstatic, and now the band — tours the globe
relentlessly, stunning audiences with their muscular sound, Matt’s volcanic leads, and, of course, Nikki’s
inimitable charisma.

Istanbul Sessions: Istanbul Underground
Confusion is good sometimes. It’s a way to start thinking about whatever you are confused about. This
is what Ilhan Ersahin’s Istanbul Sessions do since 2008. They managed to fire the stages all across the
world: from New York to Istanbul, from Paris to Sao Paolo, from London to Skopje... Questions they spread
all these years where like: are they really turkish? is this really jazz? doesn’t it sound like a rock band? how
come a jazz ensemble can really be like a band? How can they be so able to jam with any musician they
meet on stage? And so on... It’s a simple fact Ilhan Ersahin, being one of the rare moguls of New York City
underground scene via his club and record label (nublu), is traveling all around the world. It’s possible to see
him jamming with Red Hot Chili Peppers in Sao Paolo, featuring Bugge Wesseltoft in Blue Note Tokyo and/
or playing a beautiful oriental set with turkish gypsies in an elegant concert hall somewhere in Europe. His
newyorker energy is with him all the time. How about Istanbul Sessions then? It’s a summary of all you read
above. Master level musicianship meets a high eclecticism where the cliche of “east-to-west crossover”
finds its true sense and power. A session is a meeting of a deliberative body to conduct its business. In this
case, the business is music, and the music is another heavyweight long player from Ilhan Ersahin & crew.
Upon listening to the record for the first time, one word overrides every other emotion and devours the mind:
Cinema. More specifically, “cinematic.” Ersahin’s sax sounds like it was recorded in the fucking Alps. Or in
the sweeping sand dunes and Oasis’s of the Middle East. It’s just that W I D E. On “Falling,” Ersahin’s sax
is practically 3-dimensional. Double tracked and bathed in a healthy dose of reverb, the saxophone and
rhythm of the band evoke a story-like narrative. From the mad-man trills strewn throughout the track, to
the soaring, almost stadium anthem chorus. Clearly, it’s all about the (s)axe, and Ilhan Ersahin is YOUR axeman. History has a tendency to repeat itself, and for the third time ‘round, East meets West once again. And
the results are more satisfying than that mammoth inter-racial orgy you’re always fantasizing of. Through
Ersahin’s playing, you can hear the ghostly echoes of dead, pre-war jazz greats behind his frenzy-inducing
saxophone playing. You can also hear the Siren’s call, the brooding beauty of the shrouded mystery that
is the Desert. Devilishly hot and bothered, the dry night air caresses your face, stirring a primal urge that
excites as you step out into the glow of the Turkish metropolis. An Istanbul session, awaits.

LLQUID SD is a Baltimore based electronics trio, Stewart Mostofsky, Twig Harper and Jimmy Joe
Roche. You will hear bumping sounds as if banging tin in the rain. Certainly gurgling mouth sounds
that snake through cheap delay lines. Some sound like syth intestines and 8bit gases. There is a wet
jaw harp sludged through various distortions. Lots of eating mouth sucking sounds laid out over noise
salads for you to sniff and pick at. The Blacet sounds get stuck in the Lonbarde waves. This cassette
is an improvised recording done in a single setting.
