PASSAIC, NEW' JERSEY PART ill /" 8 Figure 1: Television transmitter W2XWV and its studio facilities, ready to "go on the air": (1) Lofty tower and antenna at 515 Madison Avenue dominates the midtown skyline from a height of 650 feet above the sidewalks. (2) Steel tower supports the antenna mast 165 feet above the 42-story skyscraper. (3) A battery of latest model DuMont television cameras cover studio and outside programs. (4) Careful monitoring of pickups insures uniform television images of fine pictorial quality. (5) Banks of fluorescent lamps provide cool, comfortable, non-dazzling illumination for the performers. (6) Studios are located on the 14th floor, while transmitting station is on the 42nd of this conveniently situated midtown skyscraper. (7) The electronic viewfinder enables DuMont cameramen precisely to check up their images in strictly television terms. (8) The powerful video and audio transmitting equipment provides strong signals throughout the metropolitan area. 2 Experimental signals with test video programs were transmitted at the Passaic plant in 1938 under the call letters W2XVT. It was used primarily as a testing ground for the DuMont television engineering work and also served as a demonstrator for the FCC and other television interests. In the latter part of 1939, a video broadcasting station was begun with studios at 515 Madison Avenue in New York. (Figure 1) Station W2XVT was located on the top floor of a 42 story skyscraper with transmitting tower fully 650 feet above sea level. Video was supplied to the New York area through a 4000 watt transmitter and audio through a 1000 watt transmitter. The studio facilities were designed for live pick up as well as film programs. DuMont engineers installed a flourescent lighting system so that performers were no longer subject to the intense glare and uncomfortable heat produced with incandescent illumination. In conjunction with the New York television station there was a mobile transmitter mounted on a truck complete with pick-up facilities. (Figure 2) The ultra short wave relay signals from the mobile transmitter were rebroadcast at the main site. A battery of 35 and 16 millimeter movie projectors were housed in a fireproof room. Movie images were projected through fireproof windows and on to the iconoscope camera which could be brought in front of any desired projector. In 1938, Paramount Pictures came to Figure 2 Dr. DuMont and said they would like to Their entire objective, it was later disjoin forces and buy 55,000 shares of covered, was to protect the box office of stock at $1.00 per share. With the world gone mad with war, the DuMont organization turned its efforts toward National Defense. Their laboratories designed, developed and produced radar systems for the U.S. Navy, and radar indicators for the Air Force and Navy. It also produced cathode ray oscillographs which proved indispensable in critical engineering and production activities. DuMont engineers worked with Defense contractors in fitting cathode ray equipment to countless critical problems ranging from ballistics and radio technicalities to the elimination of vibration in aircraft. According to Thomas T. Goldsmith, "We used a device called a Cyclograph (Figure 3) to test over two million armor Figure 3 Cyclograph piercing projectiles five inches in dia- 3 EDITOR'S COMMENT Figure 4 P.P.I. (Planned Position Indicator) meter. The armor piercing point and outer shell were made of copper to act as a lubricant as it travelled down the spiral grooves of the barrel. The inner shell containi ~igg~ ~~s made of steel. In thetwo million that were made, there was a mix-up in manufacturing so that there were two layers of copper. When these were fired they would explode killing the gun crew. The government came to us and asked us to develop a way to test them so they could remove the faulty ones." "We invented the Cyclograph which consisted of a coil placed near the projectile. You could put a frequency on there that would have a skin effect penetration to detect ferromagnetic material underneath. The Cyclograph performed extremely rapid inspections on metal parts sorting them according to their physical properties without being destructive." Figure 4 shows a PPI or Planned Position Indicator for plotting purposes. Some of these radar units had CRTs as big as 30 inches and used a P7 phosphor with long persistence. "We put a yellow filter over the screen to prevent eyes from becoming sore," according to Tom Goldsmith. Other wartime projects included a cathode ray compass installed in Coast Guard planes and a television system for scouting on the front line. ~ During our interviews last November, Thomas T. Goldsmith showed me a publication DuMont produced during war- time. It was called "Time, Tubes and Television" and midway through it was shown an oscillograph used at the target end of a Westinghouse "atom smasher" with which research physicists discove~ Jbai .g~ma 11!1§ ~Jl~lease atomic. energy from uranium. When the uranium atom split, the released energy sent an electric pulse to a DuMont Oscillograph where a trace was made on the screen."! had lunch with General Leslie Grove, of the Pentagon, after the war was over. This book was brought to his attention and he recalled that he called DuMont officials and asked them to get all of these books back as this part was top secret Furthermore, he wanted to go after DuMont for violation of security on Q clearance. DuMont representatives said that these books were sent to customers all over the world and trying to recall all of these would create more attention that it would by letting them go." With the cessation of hostilities in 1945, the DuMont organization began to tum to peacetime activities. The call letters for W2XVT were changed to WABD for Allen B. DuMont. Likewise, the call letters of W3XWT were changed to WTTG for Thomas T. Goldsmith, his Chief of Research. Next month, we will discuss the post war manufacturing activities of DuMont Laboratories. • Last month's issue was a new beginning for us. Our new printer produced the best halftones we have ever had and in coming months, you will see some changes in style and layout which promise to make "Radio Age" an even higher quality publication. For those of you who have not tried a display ad, I would like to point out that you get more space for the money without reduction. You can put a lot of information in the space we provide at a modest cost. Many of you may be thinking that wireless and battery radios are dying swans, but I just don't believe this is so since several ads I placed in the classified section produced a 100% sell out of wireless and battery radio parts. Because "Radio Age" is no\\'. being done on computer and because there are more people involved and hence, more costs, I find it necessary to increase the price of "Radio Age" to $20, First Class; $17, Second Class; $21 in Canada, and $38 Foreign; effective with renewals October, 1989 However, I am making a special offer to lock a better present rates regardless of when your subscription expires, even if you just renewed. To take advantage, send me a check for $17, First Class; $15, Second Class; $18, Canada; or $35, Foreign. You must do so before October 1 to take advantage of this special offer. (Offer not available to those who have already renewed through 1991.) For the past several years, we have offered our readers free "For Sale" advertising, up to 100 words. This generosity has accomplished our original goal of encouraging subscribers to list specific items "For Sale" versus "SASE for list". However, it also ha become a financial burden due to typesetting costs. Effective with the October issue, we must lower the free word limit to 50 words. The free words in "Wanted" ads will remain at 25. The rate for additional words after 50 will still be a nominal 10¢ per word. We continue to hear excellent reports from subscribers who take advantage of "Radio Age" ads, so they are effective, regardless of cost. 4 Modern Performance From An Antique Radio By Henry Kuhn Restoring old radios is usually restricted to making the appropriate repairs that will render the set operative in its original form. There is yet another course of action which depends upon the age of the receiver and the circumstances of its ownership. If it is a family heirloom where the owner desires to give it a place in the living quarters, restoration should receive careful attention. When the set is finally placed in its appointed position and played, it will doubtless be competing with present state of the art audio from an FM receiver, CD, disc, or cassette equip-ment. For this reason, the restoration should result in the best possible audio reproduction of the received AM signals. If this course isn't taken, the restored set will be reduced to a novelty momenta and will seldom be played. The degree of work required depends entirely upon the receiver design. Sets produced between 29 and 33 will require the greatest effort. Those made after this period through to the onset of WWII will take less effort although all will require "fine tuning" for the best possible audio. On somewhat rare occasions radio-phono combinations may be encountered intro- ducing a further challenge to the technicians skill. A typical example of restoration this writer performed was a Zenith TRF console Model 11 of 1930 vintage which had been consigned to a basement for an unknown number of years. The cabinet was taken to a professional for restoration. This set uses a three stage RF front end employing 24A tubes followed by a 24A power detector. 1st audio was a 27 transformer coupled to push pull 45's. The power supply was separate with an 80 rectifier. The set was inoperative due to countless problems which included bad tubes. The one bright spot was the tuning gang which unlike the previous models was made of brass. All four sections could be rotated with no shorts. The front end and the power detector was energized from a test power source. Output audio was fed to a test amplifier. Shorts were cut loose and the screen control (volume) patched in. The serrated edge of the drum dial which directly drove the gang was run through the range bringing in all the usual stations. On the basis of this success, an estimate of the situation was made and a course of action set. Build a new power supply and audio system on the main chassis. Retain the vintage TRF circuit but equip it with AGC (A VC). Use silicon diode full wave rectifier. Use push pull 6V6s driven by a 6SL7 paraphase inverter. Change the power detector to a 76 triode as 1st audio. Discard the 24As in the RF section and replace with 39/44s remote cut off tubes. Terminate the RF section in a diode detector for audio and AGC sauce. The three front controls to be tapped half meg. with power switch, a top cut "tone" control with enough resistance range to take it out, and an EQ control switch (rotary). (This had previously been a "local-distance" switch.) Finally discard the 12 inch electrodynamic and replace it with a modem PM. Pavek, owner of Pavek's Museum of Wonderful Wireless in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 20, 1989. Joe was born in 1908 and built his first crystal radio at age 10. In 1933 he started a business repairing car radios, and in World War II, he taught radio repair for the Signal Corps at Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis. Joe started collecting radios in the 1940s, building his first museum in the mid-70s in the basement of his paint supply store. Recently the museum was moved to a permanent facility in St. Louis Park. When I was doing research on the life of David Grimes, a native of Minneapolis, Joe helped me track down some needed facts. He also owned one of David Grimes' personal sets. The radio hobby has lost a great friend. 7 ***** ATWATER KENT MODEL 5 BREADBOARD ***** This RARE radio, which is tagged and in excellent original condition, is available for TRADE only at this time.
