Japanesetubesseemtobe~ade In Japan
copies of American products, but this is
not surprising, since several of the largest
Japanese electrical companies were
affiliated with GE, Westinghouse, or
Western Electric and were fully licensed
under their patents and technology. The
most significant was the Tokyo.Electric
Co., owned one-third by GE, which later
became a part of Toshiba.
Tokyo Electric Co., founded in 1890,
built an office and factory on a 3/4-acre
plot in the Shiba section of Tokyo in
1896, where it made electric lamps. In
1904 license negotiations began with GE,
anxious to enter the Japanese market but
preferring to affiliate with an existing
company rather than start a new one.
Business expanded rapidly after 1905,
and by the 1920s Tokyo Electric and
associated companies were making 90%
of the lamps sold in Japan. Tokyo
Electric also made a line of home
appliances including radios.
Meanwhile, the Shibaura Engineering
Works, founded in 1875, was making
heavy electrical machinery, and in 1910
also allied itself with GE (Shiba-ura, the
factory location, means something like
"grassy inlet"). In 1939 the two companies combined, Tokyo Electric becoming
the Mazda division of Tokyo Shibaura
Electric Co. Lamps and vacuum tubes
continued to carry the Mazda (written in
three phonetic symbols as Ma-tsu-da)
trade name, while most other products
took the name Toshiba.

Mazda UZ78 ("UZ" meaning a six-pin

for the Navy by the Tokyo Electric Co. in
June 1941; the UY76 by the West River
Machine Works (roughly translated) in
March 1944. Thanks to Dave McKenzie

Chronological table of receiving tubes
made by the Tokyo Electric Co., taken
from its 50th anniversary publication of
1940. In 1919 (the characters mean "Taisho 8th year'') a sphericai Audion and a
French tube are listed; in 1920 a Navy
tube. AC tubes arrived in 1928 ("Showa
3rd year'') with the UX226. Many of
these type numbers are direct equivalents
of American or European types; some
differ in base or heater rating; some were
made only in Japan.
Japanese years are reckoned by the reign
of the Emperor: since 1926, Hirohito.

AUTOMATIC
REGENERATION
Simple regenerative circuits increase the
tickler feedback as the tank circuit is
tuned to the higher ferquencies necessitating a constant read just off the feedback. This circuit proposes to eliminate
that problem by ''automatically" decreasing the coupling iO the tickler by using a
second variable capacitor, C2, ganged
with Cl to effect the change. C3 mitigates the effect of C2 as needed and Rl
reduces the overall coupling; a variable
tickler would do the same thing. Once C3
and Rl are set, no further adjustment is
necessary. C3 is for tracking. Regeneration gives up to 39 times gain.
1be two photos were captured in the
latest movie called Hope and Glory, a

of a seven year old.
Invention of J. C. Newton

Cl -365 tunes tank LI
C2 - 250 couples tickler,
more at low freq.,
less at high freq.
C3 - 250 lessens effect of C2 as it couples
from high to low
R 1 - Reduces overall tickler coupling
NOTE: Once C3 and Rl are set, Cl and
C2 can be tuned through entire range
without needing adjustment changing
voltage on "B" supply may change
setting ofRl. Cl and C2 are ganged
together.
Here is a real oddity. It is a radio built into
a c~est of drawers. Owned by none other
than a person I call the "king of art deco",
Ed Sage of Benicia, California.

Reclaiming Glass Dials
Club
Information
By Mark Oppat
Every so often I run into a glass slide
rule dial that has been smashed or
cracked.
If most of the pieces are there, you
can reuse the dial by bonding it to a
clean, new piece of glass.
Here's how!
1. Remove old dial and gather all the
pieces.
2. Clean the pieces carefully with glass
cleaner. Be careful not to cut yourselfl
3. Get a clean 1/8" thick piece of glass
cut at a picture frame shop that has the
same width, but shorter in length than the
original. You'll usually want it shorter so
the original dial glass will protrude into
it's original bracket If the original is held
by other clips that will accept a larger
thickness of glass, have the glass cut to
same size as original dial.
4. Lay the new glass down on a strong,
flat surface (a kitchen couner is ideal but lay a thin cloth down first to protect
the countertop.)
5. Coat the new glass with clear two part
epoxy or clear silicone seal/glue (sold for
sealing auto windshields or aquariums,
usually made by GE). Spread the glue
evenly to a thin coat using a putty knife
or other flat tool. Use enough so it will
squeeze out when compressed in next
step.
6. Lay your old dial FACE DOWN on
top of coated new glass. Align the pieces
carefully. Flip it over and compress to
squeeze out excess glue and air bubbles.
Dial should look totally clear except if
large cracks were in original dial.
7. Put a block of flat wood (1x3" is
ideal) about the size of the glass on top
and add 20 lbs. or more weight Be
careful not to shift dial. It's amazing how
easily the two glasses will float due to the
lubricating factor of the glue.
8. Be paitent. Let dry overnight Reinstall
"crippled" dial glass with fresh glass
facing out so no cut edges are exposed.
9. Some close tolerance situations may
have dial pointer clearance problem, but
using 1/8" thick glass hasn't been a
problem yet
10. Epoxy might be preferred bonding
agent where large cracks or gaps are in
original dial, as silicone glue is less
transparent and will show more in those
areas.

BEING A GOOD
CUSTOMER PAYS OFF
Dear Sir,
The story of my beautiful sign.
In 1963 I went into a TV Radio store
in my home town to buy a radio for
college. I was standing at the counter
waiting for the owner to come forward
when I glanced up on the wall and was
hit with a ton of bricks. I stepped back wow, it was that Hallicrafter shop cloth
so bold and bright. The owner said he
paid $25.00 for it and would not sell it
under any condition. Since I was a good
customer he gave me the sign on December 23, 1966 when he stopped selling
Hallicrafters. His exact words were
"Merry Christmas, farm boy".
