DuMont Gets Ready For Color
Allen B. DuMont Laboratories, Inc. - Part VI
By Donald 0. Patterson

Allen B. DuMont Laboratories made one of the first
· color telecasts in the early part of 1948. The ex perimental color television transmission equipment logged over
1700 hours of color telecasts in the 700 to 720 mhz band.
Figure 1 shows Dr. DuMont, Tom Goldsmith and the
big plant. "He and I were talking over a NBC Channel
4 program in 1950 telling a forecast of when black and
white would succumb to color TV," said Tom Goldsmith.
On October 15, 1953, DuMont participated in the
all-industry color telecasts for presentation to the FCC
using the proposed NTSC finalized system standards.
Excellent, high-quality results in transmission and
reception of color slides were achieved. The DuMont
experimental VHF color transmitter, subcarrier generator, encoder, four channel color switches, encoder
switches, color monitors, vectorscope, and dual flying
spot scanner pickup system were used during the
demonstration.
With DuMont's long experience in the development
and production of flying spot scanners, the d evelopment of the color Multi-Scanner, a slide and film pickup
system for local program origination was the next logical
step.
On April 28, 1954, a press release from DuMont
hailed the achievement of producing color from 16mrn
film. According to Herbert E. Taylor Jr., manager of
DuMont's Communication Products Division, the color
Multi-Scanner set an entirely new standard. It permitted small local stations as well as the big networks to
origirrate~color programs that equal "live" pickup technically without the need for buying expensive color

more than 80% of the vast backlog of standard 16mm
color film shot during the past 10 years." It also enabled
stations to present pictures which were an improvement
over the original film record and even over the original
scene. The electronic masking feature allows changes in
saturation of colors as well as the brightness of the picture.
Figure 2 shows the Multi-Scanner unit. The tall
cabinet at right houses a dual scanning light source which
furnishes light to the film and slide pickup sections at
center and left.
On May 23, 1955, a press release from DuMont
Laboratories announced pickup of live color television
pictures without using a TV camera by means of a
"Vitascan" color studio scanner system. With this system,
the Multi-Scanner described previously and shown in
Figure 3, was installed against the wall of a studio. A
beam of controlled light from a cathode ray tube was
emitted from the scanner and scanned persons, objects or
action in a studio and then the refl ected light was picked
up by means of multiplier phototubes. These were hung
from the ceiling (see Figure 3) and were called "buckets"
or "scoops".
In order to separate the light into three primary
colors, the multiplier phototubes were covered with
selective filters which allowed only light of the desired
color to pass through the filter to the pickup tube. In each
cluster of four tubes, one was equipped with a blue filter,
one with a green and two with red. (Figure 4) Two tubes
were used in picking up red because the primary light
source had much less of the red component than blue and
green and because the tubes being used were less sensitive to red than other colors. The multiplier tubes converted the three colors into electrical signals, amplified
or multiply them many thousands of times within the
tubes, and passed them along to conventional color transmitting equipment. Color pictures from the new system
were excellent.
Tom Goldsmith, Chief of Research, said recently that
early telecasts were done in the dark so that only the
reflected light of the scanner would be picked up. Because of complaints from actors and performers, overhead objects which resemble lamp shades were installed
and are shown in Figure 3. These objects were stroboscopic lights and were flashed on and off 60 times a
second to light the studio during the ''blanking intervals"
when the scanner is not working. This "fully lighted dark
room" method allows the studio to be lit but prevents the
light from interfering with the action of the scanning
light.

DuMont Laboratories called the Vitascan the
reverse of a conventional studio pickup system .
Instead of receiving light through a lens, the scanner
emits light from a cathode ray tube. In 1955 some 60
stations in the U.S. and abroad had equipped themselves with this inexpensive system.
Because of the cost of conversion to color was
high, DuMont recommended smaller stations convert their monocrhome facilities to color in four economical steps. As station revenue increased or as th e
market becomes more saturated with color receivers,
the broadcaster can go on to the next step. The four
equipment packages are shown in the chart below .

"DuMont Laboratories produced several million
black and white televisions but when it came time for
color, we didn't produce color tubes (CRTs) and made
only a few color sets," said Tom Goldsmith. One
interesting tube produced in the laboratories was a
three gun tube resembling a porcupine (Figure 5). Its
gun assemblies and yokes were placed 120 ·from each
other. Behind the screen was a three-sided pyramid
prism with the corresponding phosphorus deposited
on each face. When the appropriate color was scanned,
it would reflect through the prism onto the faceplate.
Because of its physical size, shape and triplicate scanning system, it was never produced or put into prod uction.

Magnavox Products
Part XIII
by Walt Sanders
The author has described all known horn speakers produced by the Magnavox Company in Parts I
through XI. In 1926 Magnavox introduced two mod els
of magnetic cone speakers, the Cornell (a metal cabinet
"drum" style) at $22.50 and the Stanford (an all
mahogany mantel cabinet) at $35 .00. See Figures 1
and 2. These speakers sold well for about a year and
a half. But, by 1927, AC operated sets were becoming
popular, as were battery eliminators for the old battery
receivers. Speaker design moved ahead in keeping
with these changes .
Magnavox introduced four electrodynamic cone
speakers, the D-6, D-8, D-20 and D-80. These speakers were all essentially the same except for the field
coil and current supply for the field. The coils were
all the same size and weight, but used different size
wire depending on the exciting source. The D-20
field was wound to utilize the B+ from the AC receiver while the D-80 was wound to utilize eight
volts rectified form the AC line. The D-6 and D-8
were adapted to battery /DC excitement. See Figure
3. All four electrodynamic cone speakers were made
so that the field coils were interchangeable, and could
be installed at any time in th e manufacure . This
allowed units partially assembled on the west coast
or Chicago to be shipped to the east for the final
assembly of the field coil.

Restoration Hints
Alan Jesperson of Minneapolis has a good idea on how to prevent catalin radios from
cracking. He removes all of the screws from the bottom of the cabinet but one. Thus shrinking of the cabinet will not put stress on the chassis screws as their is only one contact point.

Restoring The Hum.p
By Donald 0. Patterson
Some years ago, a friend gave me a Crosley 129 cathedral with a damaged cabinet as shown in Figure 1.
While this Crosley is not an expensive set on today's market, it does have a pleasing gothic appearance which
I happen to like. Therefore, I decided to try my hand at restoring it without spending a lot of time and m oney.
Crosley used the advertising theme of "Better Costs Less" but that didn't mean he used better materia ls.
On the contrary, most of his cabinetry employed gum wood veneers with most of the look built into th e finishes
applied.
Most cathedrals employ two layers of veneer of approximately 1/16th inch thickness or more . The und erlying la ye r
of veneer was usually of cheap wood with its grain running
from front to rear. The top layer was a single piece with th e
grain perpendicular to the underlying layer for strength and
to prevent warpage .
On this particular set, I had to remove both layers as it was
too difficult to remove the top layer only and the inside layer
was also damaged. I was left with the base, the front panel and
the support for the hump in the back of the set.
I purchased some cheap crossbanding of 1 /16th inch thi ckness from Constantine and Sons, 2050 Eastchester Road, Bronyx,
New York 10461 for
$.35 per square foot.
With the aid of
clamps, Weldwood
plastic resin glue
and th ei r veneer
pins, I was able to
re -e stablish
the
curve of the dome,
hump, or whatever
you want to call it,
as shown in figure
2.
Next came the
Figure 1.
tricky part. I had to purchase a 42-inch piece of crossbanding from
th em in order to cover th e entire top with one piece. I cut out the
basic size and then applied two
coats of Constantine's veneer glue
to both surfaces. Then, using a
piece of wax paper, I was able to Figure 2.
put the two parts together. By
slowly withdrawing the wax paper . I could press the pieces toge th er fo r
proper bonding and the two halves are properly aligned .
Next comes the trimming which can be done with sa ndpap er or a good
utility knife with a thin .025 inch blade. On the front, it was necessa r y to
round the front edges and use some wood filler to fill in where th e tw o
halves didn 't meet properly.
Since the finish on th e front panel was fair, I d ecided to do only touchup work on that w ith a final application of clear lacque r straight fr om a
Mohawk aeroso l ca n. On the hump, I used a can of Moha wk extra dark
walnut to get the sa me dark finish used on the originals .
A sample of the original grill cloth was sent to An tiq u e Electronic Supply in Tempe, Arizona where George Fathaever had so m e made to match
the original color and design and this was subsequently added to th eir inventory.
With this grill cloth replaced and the chassis repaired, it now looks li ke
a truly beautiful cathedral (see figure 3).

Things are looking brighter for Radio Age. We have received hundreds
of requests for samples from a national advertising campaign in so me ten
antique and collectibles magazines. Many haved been receptive to a
mailing date towards the middle of the month . That means collec tors can
have fresh ads every two weeks. It may even cut down on items sold
before ads come out.
Among our readership there is an insatiable dema nd for battery radios
of the 1920s, particularly the moderate to highly rare ones. If you know
where some are, put them on the market. You might even make some
money.
Second class subscribers, if you failed to renew your subscription on
time, we cannot mail replacements of missed issues at this lower rate. Yo u
may receive back issues by sending us $1.50.

PRICE GUIDE
January 20, 1990
VINTAGE TV's, 1935 - 1960's
-plusCATALIN, NOVEL TY and MIRROR
RADIOS, 1935 - 1950's
Dear Don,
I'd like your readers to know that many of the "foreign" radio collectors
are very courteous, friendly, appreciative and not afraid to spend some
money- for what they collect.
Many (U.S.A.) owners of collectible items seem resentful of overseas
collectors. This is unfounded and inexcuseable, in my opinion . My policy
is to sell to anyone willing to meet the price, whether it be Mummar
Kadaffe or Mother Theresa- or anyone in-between.
I treasure this card and others like it . I am happy that my packing job
was thorough enough to get the tubes to their new owner safely, and that
the tubes will be appreciated. Local collectors, by comparison, seem
"spoiled" as they tend to "take everything for granted ." Foreign buyers
always do their homework!
