Schenectady Special
A General Electric Prototype
From the Collection of Larry Boyer
by Don Patterson
In early days of broadcasting,
General Electric had in its employ an
engineer by the name of Harold D.
Newton. He was located at the plant
in Schenectady, New York . While at
this company he designed a pre-production four tube tuned radio frequency set which he called the Schenectady Special.
The accompanying schematic came
directly from his notes as well as the
notes listing the production costs to
produce the set. As you can see, it
would have cost General Electric
$97.65 just to produce the set. With
dealer mark-up the set would have
cost at least $150 or more at the retail
level and who would buy it when
there were cheaper sets such as
Crosley's for less. Consequently, the
set was never produced and the
Schenectady Special remains one of a
kind.
It was last reported that Harold
Newton had died in 1984 and the set
was given to a friend Larry Boyer.
Many thanks to the latter person for
providing information for this article.

The Commercial Wifeless and
Development Company owned the
patent on the electrodynamic "moving
coil" sensitive receiver which Stewart
Pridham and Peter Jensen had tried
unsuccessfully to sell to A.T.& T. from
1912 to 1915. In March, 1915, A.T.& T.
bought the rights to DeForest's Audion
for use as a telephone "repeater" tube,
eliminating the need for a sensitive
receiver.

An R-3 horn is made up of a telemegafone, a horn, an induction coil,
and a wood base.) The MV-1 consisted
of a telemegafone with horn, a control
box, a phonograph tone arm, and a
speaking transmitter. It was intended
to be used with moderate crowds and
sold for $200.00. The Magnavox
Telemegafone Type V-2 (figure 3-2) was
similar to the MV-1 but did not include
the phonograph tone arm, and sold for
$150.00. Figure 3-3 shows the $125.00
Tele-Phonograph which is essentially
the "Music" part of the MV-1 system.
During 1916 much of the research of
the Commercial Wireless and Development Company was concerned with the
problems of public address, such as the
phasing of multiple speakers and
echoing. Also, a patent was filed for the
electric phonograph. The work with
phonographs utilized the products of
the Sonora Phonograph Company, and
in August of 1917 the Commercial
Wireless and Development Company
merged with the Western Distributorship of Sonora to form the Magnavox
Company, with Frank M. Steers of
Sonora becoming President. After this
date all products of the Magnavox
Company bear the name Magnavox,
and the "great voice" receiver is the
telemegafone.
When the United States entered
World War I, wireless work was under
strict government regulation, and
Magnavox was called upon to contribute to the war effort. Their moving coil
telephone receiver found a home on
navy ships. A major concern was
transmitting by wireless from aeroplanes. The roar of the engines permitted transmission of code but voice
transmission was completely drowned

out. Pridham and Jensen worked at
this problem to the point of giving up
when in utter frustration they said "you
can't keep that noise out. You might
just as well let it all in!" Immediately
they realized that was the right idea.
Let the noise in on both sides of the
diaphragm, with the speech on one
side. Thus was born the Anti-Noise
Transmitter, whose history is the
equivalent of America's airplane and
naval war history. Magnavox produced anti-noise telephones for commercial use after the war.

The anti·noise transminers u sed on our commer·

in principle and conetmclion with the tra.n smiuera
that re,•olutionized communication in the air and
overcame the thunder of the 400-borsepo~er Lib·

of mounting.
A radical depanure in telephony, tbie instrument

every Navy seaplane in home or foreign waters was
equipped with Magnavox apparatus.

Then, on a day in May, 1915, when
wireless phone signals were particularly loud and clear, Pridham chanced
to hold an Edison Opera Phonograph
horn over the electrodynamic speaker
and the "great voice" was born.
What is amazing is that, in the first
three years of its existence, no one
thought to put an "amplifying" horn on
this reproducer. After all, horns had
been used on phonograph reproducers
since i895. A plausible explanation is
that there was a mind-set involved.
Wireless and telephone people were
accustomed to weak signals that could
be ad~uately heard by an ear piece,
but would not "actuate" a horn (something like putting a horn speaker on a
crystal set). Furthermore, they were
thinking of telephones for person-toperson communication, not for playing
music to a room full of people.
Now that you have a sensitive
telephone receive.r, capable of loud
volume of sound, rejected by the
telephone companies, what do you do
with it? Answer: find ways to use it
and create a market for such usage.
A telephone transmitter, connected
directly to the Magnavox through an
induction coil, would supply sufficient
5
current to operate the "great voice". So,
during the remainder of 1915 all efforts
were directed to the development and
improvement of a system that would
amplify speech and music sufficiently
to be heard by large crowds, in public
auditoriums and open parks and
arenas. Thus was initiated the concept
and practical development of the Public
Address System. (Keep in mind that
this was several years before the
development of power amplifiers!)
To create a market for the public
address equipment, demonstrations
were given and publicized. The first
recorded demonstration was an address
by Mayor Rolf to a crowd of well over
50,000 persons in the plaza in front of
the new SanFrancisco City Hall on
Christmas Eve, 1915. During the
presentation, Alice Gentle sang selections.from Operas, and records were
played through the Magnavox. The
figure shows a typical arrangement of
four loud talkers installed on a sporting
field.
The other major product developed
and sold during this period was the
Magnavox Music and Voice Telemegafone, type MV-lA
(Figure 3-4) Three Versions of the ST-4 Hand Transmitter Embodying the

Telemegafones to achieve great volume of sound for public address to

than the later ones, and that the latest version has a Bakalite mouthpiece.
Also, note the change in handle design.

PAY RADIO
ANALYSIS & CONSULTING
Pay radio existed long before pay
TV. In the 1940's and 1950's, coin
operated radios were placed in hotel
and motel rooms to entertain and
inform travelers and to pay for the
radios!
Most of these coin-operated radios
were housed in unappealing, heavy
metal cabinets, for security and antitheft reasons. The set pictured here,
however, is an attractive radio housed
in a mahogany wood cabinet trimmed
in brass. The set is a 1946 Radio-Ma tic
Model YRB-12-3, manufactured in
Indianapolis, Indiana. The chassis was
manufactured by General Electric. It
contains six tubes, including an RF
amplifier, and tunes from 540 to 1700
Khz. The wooden knobs are held on
their shafts by Allen head-set screws,
to discourage souvenier hunters. The
coin mechanism takes quarters. One
quarter buys two hours of intermittent
or continous operation, and up to six
quarters can be deposited at once, for
twelve hours of enjoyment. According
to the instruction plate, the radio and
contents were "Protected by the
Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company
of New York." A key lock allows the
back to be removed for servicing and
money collection.

Merrill Lynch reported on June 1, a

NEW
"ROSETTA"
STONE ! !
The key to unlocking ancie nt Mediterranean languages
was discovered by Napoleon's soldiers during his conquest of Egypt;
and the intellectual advancement of the Western World made a .Quantum
leap. Now there is a new "Rosetta" stone - a fulsome MASTER INDEX to
the complete series of volumes of the VINTAGE RADIO IDENTIFICATION
SKETCH-BOOKS and MONOGRAPHS of D.H.MOORE.
This MASTER INDEX pe rmi ts you to recognise in advance
those volumes or monoqraphs that would be of meaningful interest to
you, while at the same time offering you a single-source reference
for more than 2,000 schematics; power supp lies and amplifiers, hardware and accessories, test equipme nt, historical and sociological data
quite unavailable from any other source. From the earliest crystal sets
through reflexes, regeneratives, super-hets, and short-wave receivers,
will be found referenced in this MASTER INDEX.
Because the data and information contained in the SketchBooks and Monographs can never become out-da ted, they naturally constitute an investment in the preservation of the hobby of vintage radio
and those men who contributed to our mutual enjoyment of the hobby.
The MASTER INDEX, like the Sketch-Books and the Monographs,
is also unique in that inteqral with it is the first modern treatise
on nearly all of the Resistance-Coupl e d Amplifiers from the Twenties.
This is a BONUS offered gratis, as the treatise, itself, would normally
sell for $15. Also, you will find dozens of personal endorsements of
prior readers and buyers of the Ske cc;h-Books and Monographs, many of
whom you probably number among your friends and fellow-hobbyists.
Here, then, is your chance to find out for a nominal
cost just what the Sketch-Books and Monog raphs are all about, while
at the same time learning why they would be of value to you, regardless of the level of your interest in vintage radio. Send $16.Sn to
