SAINT BRIDGET CATHOLIC CHURCH 3 June 7, 2015 Pastoral Council Selection Announcement: The Parish welcomes Elisabeth Beal, Dale Matanic, and Steve Nolan as new members of the Pastoral Council (see bios and pictures below). Ann Gill will be serving a second term. The Parish and Monsignor Carr would like to thank the following Pastoral Council members who will be cycling off for their service and leadership: Karen Cozens, Patrick Gemmell and Maureen Stengel. Elisabeth Beal Although I was raised and confirmed in the Catholic Church, my family attended Mass only sporadically while I was growing up. As a teen and young adult I yearned for a deeper fellowship with God and a greater understanding of Catholic theology. By the grace of God, I befriended a devout Catholic during my first week of law school. As she came to know my desire for a deeper faith, my friend served as a fountain of knowledge about the faith and consistently modeled the daily life of a Catholic, through her active prayer life and regular church attendance. After listening to her patient, but insistent, encouragement, I finally undertook a serious study of Catholic teaching on the dignity of human life, from conception until natural death. Inspired by the truth of these profound teachings, my husband and I began to reevaluate what it meant to be a Catholic. We committed to weekly church attendance, accepted wholeheartedly the fundamental doctrines of the Catholic faith, and sought to live out these beliefs in our daily lives. My reversion to the Catholic Church was initially prompted by an intellectual conviction in the truth of the Church’s fundamental teachings. As I have sought to live out the Christian life, through attending Mass, receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation, and praying regularly, my heart has been transformed by experiencing the love of Jesus Christ. As our parish seeks to carry out the mission of the New Evangelization, I will offer to the Pastoral Council the unique and balanced perspective of a faithful Catholic young adult whose mind and heart have been set on fire by our beautiful faith. Dale Matanic My faith journey began in a Catholic family, with opportunities to enjoy the church’s rituals and traditions throughout life. When we joined St. Bridget I experienced substantial faith awareness and personal growth as a result of joining the St. Bridget Men’s Ministry of Fellowship and Faith. The practice of integrating Catholic doctrine into daily life takes conscious effort, and I credit St. Bridget Parish and my fellow parishioners for their enlightenment and guidance. Using the scriptural reference of “Faith without works is dead,” my daily challenge is to put Catholic beliefs into action wherever possible. I am a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus and active in our Council in supporting our church’s mission with projects and other work. I have one son, Barry, who is a cadet at Virginia Military Institute. He is also an Eagle Scout. My employer is Everon, Inc., a manufacturer of mobile Personal Emergency Response systems specializing in cognitive disorder patient care. I look forward to the opportunity to serve on Parish Council. Steve Nolan My parents are Catholic and I attended Catholic school through 3rd grade, receiving the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and First Communion. Since my parents were Army physicians we relocated, and I began attending public school in the 4th grade. Gradually my family attended Mass less and less, and I did not receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. During my college years at the University of Richmond I attended Mass only at Christmas and Easter. After graduating with a business degree with concentrations in International Business and Marketing I took a job with Bank of America, where I continue to work. I continued to attend Mass at St. Bridget for the next 6 ½ years. By the grace of the Holy Spirit I was led to attend the Alpha course at St. Bridget, and starting in 2014 made it my goal to attend Mass regularly. As I learned more about the Catholic Church and the Mass over the course of the year, I felt an urge to attend, almost as if I were making up for lost time. I began to form the catechesis of the Catholic faith that I had been sorely lacking by being away from the Church for so long. I was finally confirmed at age 29, at St Mary’s on Pentecost Sunday, June 8th, 2014 to complete my long journey as a full member of the Catholic Church. I hope that my journey can inspire others who have not always been regular church attendees to see the power of faith and come back to the Church. SAINT BRIDGET CATHOLIC CHURCH Contact Us! Announcing Armstrong Freshman Academy – A new human concerns initiative coming from the Living Our Mission, Diocesan collection. Speakers at all Masses June 6/7, sign ups after Mass and training in July. Two thirds of the freshmen coming into Armstrong High School in the East end of Richmond are up to two grade levels below where they should be. The academy is seeking to get everyone up to grade level by the time they are sophomores. The Academy will be heavily reliant on volunteers and mentors and our hope is YOU will feel called by this good work to help out. This has more potential to lift the blight of poverty from our city than anything tried for some time as education is so important in obtaining a decent salary. Look for more info in the coming weeks and months. Ready to volunteer contact Paul Amrhein [email protected] or 525-7902. St. Bridget Partnering With Habitat & Other Area Congregations - We are enthusiastic about starting this new faith build project. Do you know someone who is homebound or has a prolonged illness? Perhaps you have a member of your family who is in a long term care facility or homebound. Please let us know if they would like a BeFriender Minister and/or someone to bring them communion. Our faith calls us to love one another.
