at Re-Love It. Five years ago – Re-Love It’s business owners
Michael Oaks and Kim Patterson – fell in love, got engaged, and moved to
Purcellville. As we consolidated our households, we realized we had many
unique items that would be of interest to a consignment shop; but there were
no consignment stores in this area. Because both of us had backgrounds in
retail, and had both been small business owners previously, the proverbial
light bulb went off. We opened on 21st Street in Purcellville with 1,200 sq ft,
4 clothing racks and 1 bookcase for home goods. We have grown to almost
10,000 sq. ft., of clothes for women, men, kids and teens as well as aisles full
of shelves of home goods, antiques and furniture.
With the success of our Purcellville store comes the obvious choice of
opening a second location. If there is a consistent theme to what we do, it’s

Yard Sales Coming to Town
T
he Downtown Berryville Yard Sales will be held on Saturday April 11, 2015. The rain date
will be Saturday April 18. Each year the Berryville Merchants and Berryville Main Street
sponsor the yard sales. They are held to bring several thousand people to the downtown
area to see what Berryville has to offer and also generate
additional funds to help support downtown projects and Berryville Main Street. There
will be table spaces available on the sidewalks and 12 X 12 spaces available on various
parking lots. To setup you must register before April 8th to have an assigned space. Each
year we have nearly 125 people setting up throughout the downtown area. Come on down
and see a variety of merchandise, new, used, antiques, crafts, you just never know what
you will find. Most of the restaurants have some of their best days during the yard sales.
We have a map for downtown showing the available spaces. You are encouraged to sign
up early as we usually run out of spaces. To register email [email protected] or

Walking with Giraffes By: Christina Kraybill
(Editor’s Note: Christina and her husband are
the proprietors of My Neighbor and Me on
E. Main Street– “My husband and I flew to
Kenya to visit my brother-in-law, James, who
works as a pilot for Samaritan’s Purse (he
flies supplies into refugee camps.) This is my
first trip to Africa & I look forward to many
new experiences”)
I took my first trip to Africa in January to
visit my husband’s brother in Kenya. It
was a memorable trip of long flights, traffic
jams in Nairobi, afternoon chai tea with old
and new friends, visiting the Maasai Mara
Wildlife Reserve, a trip to Tanzania, and
exploring my brother-in-law’s home area
surrounding Eldoret.
On our first day in Eldoret, James wanted to drive us to two famous sites- Kerio View and the Kruger Farm. Kerio View is
located in Iten; the city of world-class long-distance runners and high altitude training. The Hotel is perched at the edge of
the Kerio Valley escarpment with stunning views and the premier African site for paragliders. After a tasty lunch, we headed
to the Kruger farm to meet a friend of James.
We didn’t know until we arrived on the farm complex that we were entering one of the largest grain farms in Kenya with 1000
acres set aside for the endangered Rothschild’s Giraffe. After visiting with Yani Kruger, Luke was assigned to take us on a
walking tour of the farm.
We walked on the dirt lane past the house, silos, out-buildings, and headed
into the fields. We welcomed the relief from the sun while passing through
a eucalyptus tree forest only to come to a pond where four giraffes were
drinking. The sight took my breath away. After gazing several minutes
in quiet, Luke led us along the pond towards the edge of a field. From
this vantage point, we counted ten giraffes including a 2 month-old baby
giraffe. Unbeknownst to us, two giraffes were feeding behind us…one
decided to come for a closer look. We had the privilege to walk with him.

“Sightings from the South” Roseville Veterinary Clinic
(Millwood, Boyce, Waterloo & White Post that is..)
Roseville Veterinary Clinic was established by Dr. Eric Myer in 1973, at its present location at
26 South Greenway Avenue (Route 340) in Boyce. Dr. Myer had previously been practicing
from a building on his adjacent farm, from which he took the name Roseville. Dr. Thomas
Leahy joined the practice in 1983 as a new graduate from the University Of Tennessee
College Of Veterinary Medicine. At that time, the majority of the work was done on farm
animals and horses. To serve the large farming community, Drs. Myer and Leahy would
travel from farm to farm around the greater Clarke County area and into West Virginia,
both north to Jefferson County and west to Hampshire County. The pet portion of the
practice was mainly established to serve the needs of the local community and supplement
the farm animal work. The original hospital had a large area set aside to accommodate the farm animal work the area needed.
There was room for bovine and equine surgery, a padded surgical recovery stall for horses, and a heated pad embedded in the
floor for hospitalizing young calves and lambs. Over the years, with the area’s changing demographics and under the guidance of Dr. Leahy, the pet portion of the practice
continued to expand. It became necessary to enlarge the facility and reconfigure the large animal section to accommodate
and honor our growing small animal patient list. The expansion also provided room for an ever-growing range of the latest
medical diagnostic technologies in order to provide the level of medicine that Dr. Leahy wanted to offer.
We are pleased that today we are able to offer an exceptional variety of state of the art medicine from not just one facility,
but two. Opened in 1989, our sister hospital, Plaza Pet Clinic, is conveniently located on Senseny Road, in the Greenwood
section of Frederick County. Together, the 9 veterinarians and 20 staff members of the two hospitals are available to give
you and your pets the best of veterinary care. Each facility offers a complete in-house laboratory for prompt stat results and
a referral lab for more complex testing. Also we provide the newest digital radiographic equipment in the area, state of the
art ultrasound technology, and high resolution digital dental radiography as well. Our doctors stand ready to help you with
your pet’s medical, reproductive, behavioral, and nutritional needs, as well as offering acupuncture and laser therapy for less

has secrets. I already wrote several
columns that indicate many of the
town’s buildings are haunted. I wrote
the Civil War stories. I wrote about
a speakeasy. Now, I write about our
town’s big secret. It is this—the town
is loaded with churches. Yep, we are a
population of a wee bit over 4,300 and
we are simply loaded with churches.
That is a good thing. I belong to Saint
Bridget’s of Ireland and I love my

Fire House Gallery celebrates 5th Anniversary
T
he windows were washed. The champagne was chilling and the welcome mat
was ready to be rolled out the front door. What’s all the fuss? The Fire House
Gallery celebrated its 5th Anniversary with a special exhibit that opened on
Saturday, January 24th. The show recapped the highlights and accomplishments of each
year since the gallery opened on January 9th, 2010 - The threat of “snowzilla” did not put
a damper on the event, as it was well attended by the gallery’s artists, volunteers, and
members of the community. A big “Thank You” to everyone who “braved the elements”
and made this a wonderful celebration. Also a special acknowledgement to Kate
Petranech, Executive Director, for her tireless time and efforts throughout the years.

March 21st - April 25th – “Fire House Gallery presents 2
Annual Critters: Celebrating the Ones We Love” Opening
March 21st 6-8pm. Back by popular demand and run
extended an extra week! Clarke County residents LOVE
their animals. And last year’s show proved it. Critters
generated more traffic, praise, and sales than any other in
the gallery’s history. Building on that success, planners are
starting early to gather more even more artwork than last
year. Also planned --painting and drawing demonstrations
on Saturdays as part of the regular Art of Making Art educational series, plus a couple of surprises sure to please all who dote
on their animals. Program sponsored in part by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts
June 6th - 20th – “Fire House Gallery presents Fourth Annual Budding Artists” Opening June 6 6-8 PM. A fun and joyous
show, this year’s exhibit will be the fourth such collaboration between Berryville Main Street and the Heritage Child
Development Center. The exhibit will showcase children’s love of making art and foster awareness and appreciation for

up at the Barns.

Sunday March 8th – Barns of Rose Hill presents “The
Berryville Baptist Rascals” 4:00 PM. The Berryville
Baptist Rascals are members of an exciting youth group
from Berryville who have been sharing their unique
puppet and children’s ministry since 1984. They perform
to lively contemporary Christian, country and rockand-roll music selections that share positive messages,
focusing on basic values such as respect, dignity, love
and human kindness. The Rascals have discovered how
powerful the combination of puppets and music can be,
crossing age, language and cultural barriers. Tickets are
$8 in advance, $10 at the door for adults, & $3 in advance,
$5 at the door for children 12 & under.

the fashions will be offered by Re-Love It, A Consignment
Shoppe & Women’s Clothing Boutique, newly opened
in downtown Berryville. The proceeds from the Silent
Auction, cash and checks only, will benefit The Clarke
County Animal Shelter. There will be light refreshments
& a cash bar during the reception hour. Tickets are $10
in advance, $15 at the door. $10 for students. Donation of
items to the Animal Shelter are also welcome.
Sunday, May 31st – Barns of Rose Hill presents “Phil
Zuckerman’s Spring Rock Room Concert” 3:00 p.m. $5
donation suggested. Phil Zuckerman’s eight Rock Room
student bands perform five songs each ranging from
Country to classic and modern rock. The musicians
are aged 13 to 60+. The Rock Room is a place where
musicians of all ages and levels can rock out! Directed
by Winchester’s own Phil Zuckerman, The Rock Room
offers: personal lessons, rock sessions, and its own venue
to perform!

room is filled with tea inspired giftware not often found in traditional tearooms
and guests are encouraged to shop the boutique, even if you can’t stay for tea.
In addition to being a destination for traditional Afternoon Tea, The Tea Cart hosts
both seasonal and private events. From a Downtown Abbey themed tea to book
club meetings, The Tea Cart accommodates a variety of private events, making
each experience one to remember. Business hours are Thursday-Sunday from
11am-4pm with two Afternoon Tea seatings at 11am and 1:30pm. Private events are
accommodated by reservation and may be held outside of regular business hours.

Re-Love It Women’s Clothing Boutique opened at 20 East Main Street in Berryville
in November. We have racks and racks filled with current name brand clothes,
