Berryville Main Street Winter 2015 Let It Snow! Note for the Executive Director - Sue Ross W hat a beautiful place we live in. So wonderful in fact that there may be many spirits who have decided never to leave! In October, Berryville Main Street partnered with Historic Ghost Tours of Winchester to lead 4 Walking Ghost Tours of Berryville. Approximately 100 people came on the tours, and along with getting local and civil war history, many took very interesting pictures, heard voices and names, and definitely got goosebumps with the hair standing up on their arms! We also brought back the Progressive Dinner in October. Starting at Camino Real for a fabulous selection of appetizers with wine and margaritas, we then went to Focaccia for a delicious dinner, and to the Boyd’s Nest for a selection of desserts and even a little box of chocolates at each place setting. What a wonderful way to spend an evening on Main Street with friends. Look forward to another one this spring. (Continued on back) Note from a Volunteer - By: Lisa Deckevith T is the season for giving, and I love giving back by volunteering at the Firehouse Gallery and Berryville Main Street. It is a joy to volunteer at the Firehouse Gallery while being surrounded by exquisite art, all created by local artisans. Walking into the gallery, you catch the aroma of hand crafted soaps and Black Dog Coffee. You are also immediately captivated by the beauty of the oil and water color paintings, sculptures, photography, pottery, cards, baskets, woodcarvings, and a bounty of unique jewelry. Meeting the artists and hearing how they create their work is also a wonderful reason to volunteer here, as well as meeting people from near and far. Local and visiting customers are very friendly and it is always great to hear them say, “This is exactly what I have been looking for!” Hopefully the holidays and the new year will bring you everything you have been looking for also! Hill High Bakery & BBQ Company - by: Deborah Heimburger H ill High Bakery & BBQ Company relocated to Berryville in July 2015 after operating as Hill High Country Store in Round Hill since 1946. The new site has a rich history in Clarke County, having served as a trailer park, antique store, car repair shop, food market, tack shop, and most recently as Mr. B’s Barbecue. Building on its reputation for fresh-baked pies, this mother-daughter owned business is now generating a loyal fan base for the barbecue emerging from the smokers surrounding the store. Although the slow-smoked pulled pork is the traditional favorite, customers are also enticed by platters of St. Louisstyle ribs, beef brisket, smoked chicken and stuffed meatloaf; all complemented by a variety of housemade sides. Hill High also offers catering services, custom-made cakes and pies, sandwich platters, cookies and desserts, along with seasonal specialties. Trickling Springs ice cream, Black Dog Coffee, Falling Bark syrup and raw honey, Newsoms Nuts, Fun Country Kettle Corn and Hill High’s own label jams and jellies attest to its partnership with the local community to bring the best products to its customers. When you visit, the most memorable part of your visit, though, may very well be to share a laugh and a good story. These girls have been cooking together for nearly 7 years and it’s the fun that keeps them going. They’ll be smoking country hams and turkeys to order through New Year’s. Pick up a gift box filled with homemade candies and baked goods for a perfect teacher gift! The Treasures of Berryville Christmas in Berryville - By Sharon Strickland Living in Berryville during the holidays is magic. First, there was a wonderful Christmas parade and the town and county folks came prepared to grab tons of candy being thrown at the crowds as the spirit of Christmas descends upon all. In this little mountain town, nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, people shout “Merry Christmas” and if you are not a Christian, people just wave back,. Friendliness is one of the gifts of Berryville for the town embraces the holidays here. It is wonderful. All about this town are Christmas tree farms and families can make a day of walking about and picking out that one special tree. If you do not want to search, there will be fresh trees on many street corners for sale. It is not hard to find that one special tree. If you need your chimney cleaned for holiday fires, there are services all about that will come and clean the creosote buildup in your chimney. Just call and schedule a visit. If you need a wreath for the front door, stop by the shops on Main Street to find the perfect garland and wreaths. They will smell wonderful. Don’t forget to ink on your calendar a visit to see the wonderful Christmas decorations at Rosemont. I have been privileged for several years to assist with the touring crowds and they are always in awe of the gorgeous festive decorations.
