husband, John McCusker, (himself recently the recent recipient of the Good Tradition

The Co Kildare singer/songwriter is joined by a host of musicians and co-writers on the
album, including Louis Abbott (Admiral Fallow), Duke Special, Adam Holmes and Boo
Hewerdine.
Recorded in Talbot and McCusker's self-built studio, housed in a converted eighteenthcentury bothy next to where they live in the Scottish Borders, 'Here We Go, 1, 2, 3' is a
measured and unhurried long-player which reflects on birth, and death, and getting older,
from gorgeous country-pop meditation 'The Year That I Was Born' (co-written with Louis
Abbott), through downtime bluegrass psalm 'Do You Ever Think Of Me', to exquisite
mortal jig 'Time To Rest', written by Adam Holmes.
Celestial torch song 'Chelsea Piers' (co-written with Duke Special and inspired by The
Pogues) conjures a languid, late-night New York and recalls Talbot's years in the US, during
which she sang with Cherish The Ladies, performed at the White House, and dreamed of
home. Her cover of Natalie Merchant's 'Motherland' is particularly resonant in light of
this.
The title track is inspired by an old gospel song. "I loved the idea of it being quite uplifting,
of it not being a funeral hymn, even though it's about death," Talbot offers. The same
could be said of a bright and beautiful album that touches on grief, depression and love.
"It's as sad as you want it to be," she says, smiling. It's equally heartening, cheering and
enlightening. Hope springs eternal.
Her last album, ‘Angels Without Wings,’ featured modern, original songs taking their
inspiration from the world of traditional music, with guest contributions from artists as
diverse as Mark Knopfler, Jerry Douglas, King Creosote, Julie Fowlis and Tim O’Brien. A
former member of Irish-American supergroup Cherish The Ladies, her solo 2008
breakthrough ‘In Love And Light’ won her international acclaim, including a US Indie
Acoustic Award which signalled her music’s crossover appeal.

genre in their latest project, but The Shee, quietly, steadily building a reputation

The Shee's latest project is no run of the mill, sequential album, either, but a thoughtful,
considered celebration of their first decade together. Continuum was conceived by the
band with Celtic Connections, one of the most influential and important festivals in
contemporary British folk music.
The project has given each member of The Shee license to dream: to commission a British
folk musician hero to write an original piece specifically with the band in mind.
The musicians duly chosen were: Andy Cutting, Brian Finnegan, Karine Polwart, Martin
Simpson, Kathryn Tickell and Chris Wood, and the pieces given their world premiere at
Celtic Connections 2016.
This album, then, is the aural souvenir of that collaboration, ten tracks varying in theme
and influence but bound by exquisite craftwomanship. There might be six performers in
the band, and multi instrumental skills in abundance, but each track allows the narrative -be that words or melody -- to take centre stage with accompaniment that is never the
most obvious choice but complements naturally. Songs are delivered by full bodied,
confident vocals, a call to arms, like the curious Cradle Song where Olivia Ross continues
to sing even when the storm is closing in around her. Tunes are wordless songs, where
instrumental interplay conveys the message just as easily as lyrics, like the talkative fiddles
in The Vampire Rabbit of Newcastle. Invocation of atmosphere and ambience is evidently
of utmost importance to The Shee, too, with instruments and textures permitted to shift
and mutate as the imagined scene dictates.
Continuum is the powerful product of a unique collaboration, of which the band and their
contributors should be proud.

The first thing to be said that the music on this CD is first class, no gimmicks, syncopations or
other distractions, just extremely good music played by exceptionally talented musicians,
across a range of instruments, all played to a very high standard.
The Mulcahy family represents a new generation of musicians who have made serious study of
the music and are poised to bring it to a new height. This is so welcome and needs to be
acknowledged and encouraged. If their first album was a revelation for the rhythmic and
beautiful Mulcahy sound - as well as the virtuosity across several instruments of Michelle and
Louise - The Reel Note presents a new level of musicianship exploring their collective repertoire.
Louise and Michelle both started on tin whistle. At age 10 Louise moved on to the flute and as a
teenager began playing uilleann pipes. Mick recalls driving Louise to Dublin from their home in
Limerick every month for a year for lessons in Na Píobairí Uilleann. Louise recently guestpresented the TG4 traditional-music show Geantraí.
Michelle started playing the accordion aged six and surprised everyone when she asked for a harp
at age ten. She subsequently took up the fiddle, piano and concertina. Michelle was TG4 Young
Traditional Musician of the Year in 2006 and recently featured on Riverdance composer Bill
Whelan's new album, The Connemara Suite, on a piece for harp and orchestra which he wrote for
her.

Leftover Wine is a live album released by Melanie in 1970 on the Buddah label. Production and
arrangements were conducted by her then husband, Peter Schekeryk.
The album was recorded at Carnegie Hall in New York City, except for the closing track "Peace
Will Come", which was a studio recording that was released as a single to promote the album.

Folk Legends Dave Swarbrick & Simon Nicol, Folk's Finest Duo's first album now on CD. After
Fairport Convention called it a day in 1979, Dave Swarbrick and Simon Nicol joined forces and
spent the early eighties playing folk clubs throughout the country as an acoustic duo. Their
repertoire was drawn from various sources - including Fairport's, Swarb's late seventies/early
eighties solo albums and also several tracks that were individual to the duo.
The acoustic duo proved popular and recorded three albums. Two of those, the 1981 live album
'Live at the White Bear', and the 1984 studio effort 'Close to the Wind', were re-issued a few
years back on the Woodworm Records label. The third, 'In The Club' has never appeared in any
format other than it's original, limited release cassette format, until now. Fully remastered for CD
and with previously unreleased bonus material. Fairport reformed again in 1985 with Simon and
have become one of the countries hardest working/touring bands ever since.

2015 saw the UK’s unsung heroes of experimental art rock London based Sweet Billy

Formed in 1999 by founder and chief songwriter Bruce Soord, The Pineapple Thief have
continued to evolve and refine their sound ever since and they're seen by many as one
of the most interesting and innovative rock bands the UK have produced in recent years.
'Variations On A Dream' was the band's third studio album and was originally released in
2004 on the Cyclops label. All tracks on the CD were re-mixed and re-mastered Bruce
Soord, ensuring all 10 tracks sound exquisite.
'Variations On A Dream' finishes with a 16 minute epic "Remember Us". Kscope will be

Albums like 'Someone Here Is Missing' (2010) ('extremely classy and frequently

Formed in 2010 in St Petersburg, Russia, iamthemorning feature pianist Gleb Kolyadin
and vocalist Marjana Semkina. After self releasing their debut album in 2012 and an EP
early 2014, the band released their new album & debut for Kscope entitled 'Belighted' in
September 2014.
'Belighted', is now set for Mid-Price re-release on CD through Kscope presented in a
digipack with 12 colour page booklet and will be at mid-price.
Recorded and mixed by Marcel van Limbeek (Tori Amos), the album also features Gavin
Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson) on drums. Gleb Kolyadin, himself a classically
trained musician, took great care selecting the right musicians to ensure a high standard of
musicianship for both their live performances and recording utilising guitar, bass, drums,
string quartet, and a number of rather unconventional instruments including harp, as well
as performing as a an acoustic duet.
Taking their influence, both musically and lyrically, from the greats of the progressive rock
arena including the likes of Porcupine Tree, Philip Glass and Kate Bush, their song writing
is rich with metaphorical layers: referencing Shakespearean poetry, images of modern
culture, visual aesthetics of Pre-Raphaelites leading the listener to deep emotional places.
Marjana Semkina explains "there isn't just sadness, loneliness and pain in iamthemorning's
lyrical field; there is beauty, happiness and hope as well."
The band are currently enjoying the success of their 2016 studio album, the follow up,
'Lighthouse', and are supporting the release with their stunning live performances at
various Festivals with more shows to be confirmed in the coming months.

Magazine's 2016 Progressive Music Awards.

George Harrison: A Beatle In Benton, Illinois is a historical documentary of the musical
birthplace and first American visit by the Beatles' lead guitarist George Harrison.
While John Lennon went to Paris, Ringo and Paul went to Greece, George, accompanied by his
brother Peter, arrived in Benton, Illinois, USA in September 1963.
George & Peter were in Benton to visit their sister Louise Harrison-Caldwell, who had moved to
Benton in March 1963 due to her husband's job at a mining company. During this time, Louise
would often visit local radio stations plugging her brother George's band, the Beatles.
The first song by the Beatles to ever be played in America: "From Me To You" was spun at WFRXAM radio station in West Frankfort, IL. That song became an overnight sensation and smash hit the rest is history!

The long and winding countryside of Norway in the late sixties was hardly the ideal time or
place to be playing psychedelic folk music. But the teenage duo of Nina Johansen and Rune
Walle, aided by their friend Satnam Singh, triumphed over high odds to make one of the most
spellbinding albums in the genre made in any country.
Johansen and Walle met at a Peoples College in 1968 in the rainy small town Manger outside of
Bergen, and discovered a shared love of The Beatles, Joni Mitchell and eastern sounds. They
soon started playing and writing songs together. Then they met Satnam Singh, one of the very
few people of colour living in Norway at the time, and luckily he turned out to be an excellent
flute and tabla player. It was meant to be — Oriental Sunshine was formed.
A sole album was made, released on Philips in 1970, with the trio joined by accomplished jazz
musicians Espen Rud (Min Bul), Sture Janson, and Helge Grøslie (Junipher Greene). The album
was recorded by the legendary Norwegian producer and recording technician Jan Erik
Kongshaug. Round 2 are proud to present this long out of print rarity, with remastered audio,
exclusive poster and liner notes by Flashback Magazine editor Richard Morton Jack.

It’s almost six years ago since Death By Unga Bunga released their debut album, ‘Juvenile
Jungle’, and now, in 2016, both Jansen Plateproduksjon and the band felt that it was about
time to issue that record, too, on vinyl. This was the record that kicked off the band’s career,
and there’s no doubt it still sounds great.
The ten songs that made their debut album, were songs they had been playing live for many
years, and they were the only songs they had at that moment. The rest of their live set consisted
mainly of songs by The Sonics. As mentioned, the album was only released on CD back in the
days, but every time the band plays a concert, people come and ask when it will be released on
vinyl.
2016 will really be the year of Death By Unga Bunga. They released their fourth album, ‘Pineapple
Pizza’, in March, and on the same day that they’re re-issuing ’Juvenile Jungle’, they’re also
releasing ‘Fight!’ - an EP with four brand new songs.

The music festival experience is often fueled by what festival-goers refer to as Mary and Molly,
which they claim helps the various musical genres mix for maximum enjoyment. This same
mixing of styles in a high-energy, uninhibited atmosphere, resulted in an explosion of creativity
from a group of talented musicians. They are Mary Loves Molly and their chemistry is
contagious.
Dane E, Guitar, Vocals, Songwriter, grew-up on the ocean-view ridges of Big Sur, California. He
released his first EP as The Co-op, with producer Dwight A. Baker, leader of Wind + The Wave,
which received a warm reception at Triple A radio. Punky Balfour, Drums & Percussion, started
early and learned an array of drumming styles, from Afro-Cuban to Punk. That led him to perform
with Baby Bash, Frankie J, Down From Hollow, Ikarus, Raphael Saadiq, and Zak Waters. Jon
Reshard, Bass, has been featured in all U.S. and most international bass publications. He
produced his own instrumental album in 2008 featuring guitarist Greg Howe and drummer Dave
Weckl. That project led to a call from Prince, who tapped Reshard as his bassist for an unreleased
project. He’s also toured with The Memorials, a Bay Area thrash band founded by drum prodigy
Thomas Pridgen (ex-The Mars Volta). Erica Wobbles, Synths & Piano, is perhaps best known for
his electronic influences in the nationally touring Lillie Lemon band. A producer and performer,
Wobbles plays a wide variety of keys-related instrumentation. The band formed and recorded in
the small artist community of Ojai in southern California.

must be four intensely bored individuals. Rough Master, the group's smart, intricate new album

Formed in September 2014, Mauno -- pronounced Mao-no, and named after bassist Eliza Niemi's
adamantly unmusical Finnish grandfather -- have a wandering sound that refuses to be pinned
down. Over the course of Rough Master it strays from twisting grunge-pop on 'Again', to a breezy
lilt on 'Champs', to piano ambience ('Pulses') and string-accompanied haze ('Reeling') elsewhere.
The result is an album that sounds like a windows-rolled-down summer road trip with the cast of
Seinfeld. Elaine doesn't want to listen to music, George is very focused on the road, Kramer is

they "pull a bit from everywhere."

On his second leader album for ECM - following on from the prizewinning Gefion Danish guitarist Jakob Bro continues to refine his trio project, with its emphases on
melody, sound, space, layered textures and interaction.
The rapport between Bro and Thomas Morgan (Bro calls him “my musical soul mate”) has
become something extraordinary, and often guitarist and bassist develop improvisational
ideas in parallel. There’s an historical aptness, too, in the choice of Joey Baron as the
band’s new drummer, for Bro first encountered Morgan when the bassist was playing in
Baron’s band a decade ago... On Streams Joey Baron dives into the music’s detail with
obvious pleasure.
This recording features five new Bro pieces: “Opal”, “Full Moon Europa”, “Shell Pink”,
“Sisimiut” and “Heroines” (heard in both a trio version and a particularly lovely solo
version). Completing the album’s repertoire is the freely improvised “PM Dream”,
dedicated to the late Paul Motian. Jakob’s approach to melody acknowledges the
influence of Motian, and both Bro and Morgan played in the late drummer’s ensembles.
Recorded at Studios La Buissonne in the South of France in November 2015 and produced
by Manfred Eicher, Streams is issued on the eve of a major tour by the Bro-Morgan-Baron
trio with dates in Europe and South Korea.
Bro made his first ECM appearance in Paul Motian’s twin-sax/triple-guitar band on the late
drummer’s Garden of Eden (2006). Three years later he returned as a member of Tomasz
Stanko’s trans-European quintet on Dark Eyes. And in 2015, the label released Gefion,
Bro’s debut as leader of a trio featuring Californian bassist Thomas Morgan and the
legendary Jon Christensen on drums. Mike Gates of UK Vibe praised the trio’s “landscapes
of sound that are achingly beautiful, sparse, yet full bodied at the same time”.

The great avant-jazz drummer Andrew Cyrille - whose associations have ranged from a
long, vintage collaboration with Cecil Taylor to co-leading current all-star collective Trio
3 with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman - makes his ECM leader debut with The
Declaration of Musical Independence.
Featuring a quartet with guitar luminary Bill Frisell, keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum and
bassist Ben Street, the album kicks off with an artfully oblique interpretation of John
Coltrane’s “Coltrane Time”, led by Cyrille’s solo drum intro. The disc then features a
sequence of sonically arresting originals, including Street’s luminous “Say...” and Frisell’s
deeply felt “Kaddish” and “Song for Andrew”, with Frisell’s guitar alternately cutting and
billowing, the edge evoking some of his most illustrious past ECM performances.
There are three atmospheric spontaneous compositions by the band - including the
dynamic soundscape “Dazzling (Perchordally Yours)” - that highlight Cyrille’s individual
sense of percussive drama. Cyrille appeared on classic ECM and WATT albums by the likes
of Marion Brown, Carla Bley and the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, but this album puts a
deserved spotlight on an icon of jazz drumming.
The New York Times has called Cyrille an “avant-garde eminence”, praising his bone-deep
knowledge of not only vintage jazz drumming but also pan-African rhythms - and noting
how his “watchful, flowing pulse” has influenced so many of today’s most artful
drummers.

The Strade project's objective is to experiment with shamelessly heterogeneous
sounds, from different geographical latitudes and musical genres. The idea basically is
to tell stories, because the tracks are constructed as narratives in the making.
The trio is made up of Giovanni Ferri, an artist who works in theatre, visual arts and
performs alto sax in a number of different improvisational contexts, realising projects in
Italy and Japan.
Mirco Ballabene plays with different improvisation and jazz ensembles. In 2011 he
recorded the album 'Vìreo' for the label Aktivraum that featured Markus Stockhausen.
He studied with Silvia Bolognesi, Stefano Battaglia, Matt Brewer and Matt Mitchell.
Mirco Bindelli began playing drums in 1992 at the age of 14 years as a self-taught , later
began studying with Maestro Adriano Pedini, which , over seven years he faces
different stylistic genres and explores the jazz improvisation technique. From 2000 to
2010 took part in seminars and master classes with the drummer Massimo Manzi,
Hellas Bandini, Carl Palmer, Jan Paice, Paul Motian, Peter Erskine and Horacio " El
Negro " Hernandez.

musicians based in Paris, France.
Germani writes: "It confirms my love for the melody with accompaniment, considered

Joan Jeanrenaud, composer and former cellist of the Kronos Quartet, who penned the
liner notes for this release, writes that "Listening to Thollem McDonas play the piano is
an astonishing experience. He has an innate ability to compose transcendent music
using the piano as his expressive voice and to explore the depth and range of the
instrument like no one else". He was highlighted in William Parker's recently published,
seminal book on improvised music, Conversations II: Dialogues and Monologues.
Thollem is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, growing up in what was known as the

and idioms he experienced in the area including music from Mexico, India, Persia,

‘Kid Sister’ isn’t just The Time Jumpers’ fond farewell to a fallen musical comrade. It’s
also a luminous demonstration of how music alleviates pains of all sorts, whether

The ‘kid sister’ of the title is Dawn Sears, The Time Jumpers’ infinitely versatile “girl

was the wife of Time Jumpers bandleader and fiddler, Kenny Sears.

Far Out Recordings presents the peerless and criminally undervalued Quartin
catalogue, beginning with the reissue of Jose Mauro's forgotten masterpiece
'Obnoxious'. Over the course of the 60s, Roberto Quartin released more than 20
albums in Brazil on his label Forma, by artists including the likes of Eumir Deodato and
Quateto Em Cy.
Selling the rights of Forma to Polygram in 1969, Quartin struck out for pastures new at
the dawn of the 1970s with the launch of his self-titled label. Significant works and highwater marks for Brazilian music overall followed in that decade's first year, with Victor
Assis Brasil Plays Antonio Carlos Jobim and the aforementioned Obnoxious. These rare
and unique gems in Brazilian music, difficult to categorise yet compellingly haunting,
have for too long gone unheard. Far Out Recordings hopes that listeners out there, be
they seasoned Brazilian music aficionados or simply those in thrall to bewitching,
hypnotic powers of music from the outer reaches, will appreciate and enjoy these
works as much as we appreciate having the opportunity to present them to you.
Mauro is said to have died in a car accident shortly before the release of 'Obnoxious' in
1970, a fact that could have lent his brief musical career a touch of mythology were it
not for how scant the details concerning any other aspects of his life are. All tracks on
the record were composed by Mauro and Ana Maria Bahiana... Production on the
record was cancelled after Mauro's death and it was never sold commercially until it
was rereleased decades later.
Today, Obnoxious retains its strange, otherworldly appeal -- A firm favourite amongst a
small circle of deep diggers including Madlib, Gilles Peterson, Floating Points and DJ
Nuts. Jose Mauro's mournful and melancholic vocals create a dark, brooding
atmosphere that stands in contrast to the usual joyfulness and high-spirited rhythm of
the more prominent Brazilian music of the era.

Scottish pianist Kenneth Hamilton performs works by Ronald Stevenson (1928-2015), a hugely
influential but contentious composer, on the first volume in a series for Prima Facie.
Ronald Stevenson was a respected but contentious figure in the cultural life of Scotland and the
UK as a whole. His multifarious musical passions, the wide scope of his output, and his outright
rejection of the more alienating elements of contemporary Western composition had led him to
be labelled by some as a neo-Romantic reactionary (especially ironic, given his left wing social and
political views) or even as a socialist-realist composer (which at least took into account these
views).
But Stevenson had been born out of his time, as the aesthetic winds were then blowing in a
direction that he found distinctly uncongenial. A generation of slightly younger students from the
same music college, most prominently Harrison Birtwistle and Peter Maxwell Davies (both born
in 1934), would go on to represent the so-called New Manchester School of musical modernism,
while Stevenson carried on in a decidedly different vein. Despite this, the sheer scope, power and
mastery of his Passacaglia on DSCH (1963) finally brought him international recognition.
Scottish pianist Kenneth Hamilton, himself a student of Ronald Stevenson (and of Lawrence
Glover) performs worldwide as a recitalist, concerto soloist and broadcaster. He was described
after a concerto performance with the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra as “an outstanding
virtuoso – one of the finest players of his generation” (Moscow Kommersant), by the New York
Times as a performer “full of energy and wit”, and by the Singapore Straits Times as “a formidable
virtuoso”. He’s appeared frequently on radio and television in Britain, the US, Germany, Canada,
Australia and Russia, most recently as soloist in Chopin’s First Piano Concerto with the Istanbul
Chamber Orchestra on Turkish Television, and as pianist and presenter of the TV programme
“Mendelssohn in Scotland”, broadcast in Europe and the US by Deutsche Welle Channel.
Hamilton is a familiar voice on BBC Radio 3, and has numerous festival engagements to his credit.
Well-known also as a writer on pianists and pianism, he is Professor of Music at Cardiff University.
His last book, ‘After the Golden Age: Romantic Pianism and Modern Performance’ (Oxford
University Press) was welcomed as “full of wit and interest, and written with passion” by Charles
Rosen in The Times Literary Supplement and as “a wonderful book” by James Fenton in The
Guardian.

Odradek presents piano duo Chie Tsuyuki and Michael Rosenboom performing piano four
hands transcriptions of Liszt's most dramatic and thrilling symphonic poems.
Les Préludes takes us on a journey through the spectrum of human experience: love, sorrow,
anger, and pastoral serenity. Mazeppa is similarly ambitious, contrasting Mazeppa's wild, naked
gallop with triumphant music celebrating the ecstasies of art itself. In Hunnenschlacht, the tumult
of war is ultimately overcome by those striving for peace.
These works, all transcribed by Liszt himself, are heard alongside the Duo's own transcription of
the Paraphrase on Dies irae, also known as Totentanz, for piano four hands. Late 19th-century
developments in piano manufacture were perfectly timed for Liszt, who was able to use the
augmented capabilities of the instrument as the perfect vessel into which he could pour his
passion and showmanship.
The Duo's arrangement of Totentanz on this disc takes this utilisation of the piano's potential to
its logical conclusion, using modern prepared piano techniques to add extra aural dimensions to
Liszt's original score, vividly conjuring up the rattling bones, tolling bells, and heavenly harps
evoked by Liszt's main inspiration for the work, Holbein's haunting Todtentanz woodcuts.
Liszt's arrangements of his symphonic works for piano four hands are still played remarkably
rarely. Yet, just as many of his transcriptions for piano solo have recently become established as
an independent and emancipated concert repertoire, it is surely time for his four hands
transcriptions to experience a similar renaissance.
This disc is the perfect place to start exploring such scintillating repertoire.
