It’s all about “renewal…”
As the calendar renews for another year, it’s our hope that you and your loved ones have enjoyed all
the joy and bounty of the holiday season.
And we hope that you’ll consider sharing that joy and bounty with us by becoming, or continuing to
be, members of the flock here at The Rock.
Everywhere you look around here – inside and out – there’s something new or renewed. We “kept The
Rock on a Roll” last year, on the heels of a terrific 2013. “Renewal” is a constant theme – and challenge – for us, especially as stewards of this venerable old building, and we’ve been very fortunate
over the past couple of years to have had some success in raising the funds needed to maintain and
improve it.
But operating RVCC is every bit as much of a financial challenge, and for that we depend largely on
your renewal. Your membership investment is a vital source of the operating funds we need to pay
the bills and salaries around here. Here’s an idea of just how challenging it is:
Your Basic Family Membership pledge of $45 will pay the electric bill for 1 day;
Your Sustaining Family Membership pledge of $180 will heat us, in season, for 2 days;
Your Rock Star Individual membership pledge of $480 will keep us on the job for 1 day.
We have held membership dues steady for the 2015 Annual Fund and Membership Drive – and
these three pledge levels allow your membership choice to include more than a desire to belong, but
also to be an investment in the mission of RVCC. For more information about these membership levels, see the article on page 5.
We are thrilled that over one hundred of you chose to upgrade to Sustaining and Rock Star
memberships last year. And we’d love for even more of you to accept the upgrade challenge this year,
so we can expand our programming even further for you in 2015!
Never a day goes by that one of you doesn’t come up to Sara, Marie or me to tell us how amazed and
happy you are about everything that’s happening here. That’s what renews our spirits, renews our
faith that we’re on the right path, and renews our energy during these wonderful, dizzying days on
the job.
And we hope it’s why you’ll renew your membership today.

Join us for our community Pancake Breakfast—buttermilk pancakes, real blueberry

Friday, 1/16: Coffee House Music Series with The Wild Geese
The Wild Geese have all performed together for many years in the Charlottesville
Symphony and/or taught at the University of Virginia. They have all been active
musicians in orchestras and chamber music groups in central Virginia, throughout the
US, and in Europe.
Each of The Wild Geese programs offers music from a specific time and place within
the European Baroque tradition of the trio sonata repertoire. The current program,
titled “Purcell’s London,” explores the soundscape of London during late 17th and early 18th
centuries, and examines how its composers came to be so cosmopolitan in their approach to musical
composition.
Members include Susan Black, formerly concertmaster of the Waynesboro Symphony and currently
concertmaster of the Virginia Consort Orchestra. Nancy Garlick taught and performed clarinet with the
University of Virginia for many years. Prior to that she played with the New Haven Symphony and
taught at The College of Wooster. Content Sablinsky, keyboardist, also taught at UVA for many years,
and was pianist with the New Orleans Symphony. A highly sought-after accompanist, she has appeared
in many recitals and was recently invited to adjudicate in China. Lynanne Wilson, cellist, currently
performs with the orchestras of Lynchburg, Shenandoah, the Oratorio Society and Virginia Consort, as
well as many chamber music groups.

Johnny Winter, Robert Cray, Parliament-Funkadelic, Gary Clark JR, Roomful of

Sun., Jan. 11: Friends of Nelson Public Meeting
Friends of Nelson will host a public information meeting on Sunday, January
11, at 7:00pm in the RVCC Auditorium. Come and hear the latest on opposing the pipeline, and get prepared for Dominion's Open House with FERC representatives. Dominion’s next Nelson open house has been scheduled for
January 14, 5:00-7:30 at Nelson County High School/Middle School. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission staff members will be there. For more info about Friends of Nelson and the Atlantic Coast

Blue Ridge Medical Center is hosting a Health Insurance Information and Enrollment Event on
Thursday, January 15 from 5PM-8PM, in Rockfish University. Certified Application Counselors will provide free in-person assistance with your Healthcare.gov application or simply answer questions about
health insurance plans, prices, tax credit eligibility, and the penalty for not having health insurance in
2015. They can also help screen families for eligibility for Medicaid and the Children Health Insurance
Program (CHIP).
Open Enrollment to enroll in health insurance ends February 15 th. For coverage beginning February
1st, 2015, you need to enroll in coverage by January 15th, 2015.

campaign will offer free Solar Site Assessments and discounted installation costs
to residents of NELSON County for a limited time beginning in the Spring of 2015.
Come hear about how LEAP works to save energy, go green, and respond to climate change. Their goal is to help homeowners and small businesses go green by
supporting them in saving energy, purchasing clean power, going solar, and shifting other aspects of

Saturday, February 7: Indoor Market
The 8th Annual Winter Market season skips the month of January, and continues Saturday, February 7! Indoor Community Markets feature local produce,
meats, cheeses, jams, baked goods, plants, greenery, art and crafts. The markets
run 9:00am-noon on the first Saturday of the month and each market coincides
with RVCC's Pancake Breakfast and the Treasure Chest Bag Day.

Coming in March: The Rockfish River Gallery of Fine Art & Exquisite Crafts
The Rockfish River Gallery of Fine Art and Exquisite Crafts is slated to open at RVCC on March 2, 2015. The
Gallery will occupy the room formerly known as the Conference Room, directly across from the front office.
As many of you know, the wonderful Valley Green Gallery closed on November 30th, after 22 years of operation. Those who were members were greatly saddened by this turn of events, as the Gallery was a great addition
to the community.
One of the Gallery’s members, Kathy Bonham, decided to open a new gallery here at RVCC. She says, “I fell into
the project, and it felt right.” While the new gallery space is only about a third of the size of the old gallery, it will

still be as varied in the fine arts and crafts it shows as in the old gallery. Ms. Bonham plans to have paintings,
photography, cards, sculpture, jewelry, pottery, baskets, wood carvings, some small hand-made furniture, candles, woven scarves,
rugs and hats, glass-work and more, all from local and regional artists. Books from local and regional authors will also be represented. So far, 11 of the new gallery’s 13 members are from the now-closed Valley Green Gallery.

RVCC Partners with Rockfish Valley Arts
RVCC has made tremendous progress in so many ways over the past few years, advancing several components of our mission by
expanding the recreational, educational, and social opportunities that we’re able to offer to our community. And yet we have
keenly felt—and heard consistent feedback about—a weakness in the realm of the cultural and artistic programming offered here.
And so when artist Michele Regine approached us about the formation of a teaching artists’ collaborative, it was exactly the sort of
thing we’d been hoping to find.
The new Rockfish Valley Arts will operate in partnership with RVCC, using one of our classrooms as its studio. Rockfish Valley
Arts will be developed as an arts collaborative—composed of both full-time and part-time instructors—offering a range of classes
and workshops in the visual and performing arts, to include studio arts, hand crafts, writing & storytelling, plus music, drama, and
dance. Eventually, RVA hopes to develop outreach programs and scholarship programs to fulfill its mission in as much of the Nelson community as possible.
If you would like to be involved with Rockfish Valley Arts as an instructor or to assist with the project, please contact Michele Regine
at 434-945-3333. RVCC will also be seeking funding to provide necessary materials and supplies for the RVA studio, and any donation made to RVCC for that purpose will be tax-deductible.
Classes at Rockfish Valley Arts will start in mid-February with a repeat of Michele Regine's "Drawing Essentials" course and its sequel
"Color Essentials". Virginia Dawnswir will give a bamboo brush-making workshop and kids’ flat felting workshop, for children accompanied by an adult.
Beginning February 12: Classic Art Essentials with Michele Regine
Michele Regine’s Classic Art Essential Atelier classes are specially formulated for the art student seeking the solid technical and aesthetic foundations of representational art. Ms. Regine’s unique and personalized instruction guarantees each student’s artistic development. Classes are arranged as 6-week mini-courses, meeting once a week for three-hour sessions. Space is limited—please

Basic Drawing Essentials: Thursdays 9am—noon, 6-week session beginning February 12. Course fee: $250 plus materials.

Beginning February 21: Handmade Brushes for Artists with Virginia Dawnswir
9am—noon, 2/21, 2/28, 3/7, 3/14. Adults only, please. Series fee: $75. Learn how to make beautiful and functional brushes
for painting, calligraphy, sumi-e and other wet media. Students will make several bamboo and deer tail fur brushes over 4 classes.

Beginning February 21: Stabby, Stabby Fun Time!—Flat Felting for Kids with Virginia Dawnswir
Children ages 10 and up; ages 7-9 accompanied with an adult. Series fee (Sessions A or B): $45. Make several fun felting fabric projects. Students will learn how to safely use felting needles, techniques to add colorful designs to fabric and needle felt small
objects. Four 1.5 hour sessions. Minimum 6 students, maximum 10.

Tuesdays, 6:00pm: Back, Neck, Shoulders Yoga Plus w/Rebecca L’Abbe. $15/drop-in OR $104/8 classes (must use within 3

The RVCC Business Council is a new group designed to inform, link and promote local entrepreneurs. It will also serve as the
voice of the Rockfish Valley business community, and Nelson County merchants at large, in supporting sustainable growth while
