Silent Auction bidding will begin at 6:00 p.m. Each bidder should legibly write his or her bid number on the bid form. Once a bid is entered, it may not be removed. Starting bids and minimum raises shown on bid forms must be honored. All items will have bid forms attached or positioned nearby. Under no circumstances may these forms be removed from the items. Some items featured are offered with a “Guaranteed Bid” price. The person who writes their bid number in that box agrees to purchase the item at the “Guaranteed Bid” listed price. If no one uses the “Guaranteed Bid” option, the item will go to the highest bidder. LIVE AUCTION The Live Auction will begin during dinner. To enter a bid, raise your bid number toward the auctioneer. A bid is registered only when formally recognized and called by the auctioneer. The bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer as the successful bidder will be the buyer. In the event of a dispute between bidders, the auctioneer will have the sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the item in dispute. With the word “sold” from the auctioneer, the right to buy the article will pass to the successful bidder. FIXED PRICE Fixed Price events are priced at a “per person” amount and have a limited number of participants listed on the bid card. By listing your name and bid number on the bid card, you will automatically be included in the Fixed Price event. When the card is full, the bidding is closed. Fixed Price bids, once accepted, are final sales. GROUP BIDDING Group bidding is permitted for large items and parties. Each group must designate an authorized bidder for the group. PAYMENT AND RECEIPT OF ITEMS Payment for all items must be made at the cashier’s table following the close of the Live Auction. Payments made by cash, check, MasterCard or Visa will be accepted. Please present your bid number to the cashier. All items must be claimed and removed from the premises by buyers on the night of the auction. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE Buyers must adhere to all conditions specified by our donors. All sales are final, and no refunds or exchanges are possible. All articles are sold “as is.” Items have been donated to the auction with the understanding that no changes, exchanges, or refunds are allowed. - 10 - Dates for services and items, such as vacation homes and private dinners, are to be arranged for mutual convenience between donors and buyers. Buyers may not change the times and dates designated for use of homes, restaurants, merchandise certificates, hotels, and resorts. All certificates and donations of restaurant or hotel services exclude taxes, gratuities, and alcoholic beverages unless otherwise stated. Reservations for restaurants, resorts, and hotels are required and are subject to availability. Unless otherwise stated, certificates, lodging, and trips must be used within one year (by March 1, 2011) of the auction. Some certificates may have a shorter expiration, and it is the buyer’s responsibility to note the expiration date. Buyers are responsible for contacting donors and making all arrangements to receive any items or services not received on the evening of the auction. DISPUTES The Parents Club President will have sole and final authority in resolving all disputes. VALUATIONS It is the Auction Committee’s intent to describe accurately all auction items with the information provided by our donors. Neither the Auction Committee nor St. Michael’s School is responsible for the correct description or authenticity of any item. The estimated values provided are not warranted by the Auction Committee for tax purposes or for general value. Payments are tax deductible only as allowed by law. IRS Revenue Ruling 67-246 reminds buyers that no deduction for an auction purchase price is allowed except to the extent that the taxpayer can show that payment exceeded the fair market value at retail of an item received or a service rendered. This information is provided by St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School to exercise its responsibility to inform its patrons of the applicable tax law. ABSENTEE BIDS Absentee bids for Silent and Fixed Price auction items may be mailed or returned to St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School, Attention: Sue Abbott, 2140 Mission Avenue, Carmichael CA 95608. Absentee bids must be received no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2010. In the event of identical bids, the earliest bid will be honored. Successful bidders not attending the auction will be notified by telephone or e-mail during the week following the auction. Arrangements for payment and receipt of items will be made at that time. All payments for absentee bids must be received by Friday, March 12, 2010, 3:00 p.m. RETURN THE FAVOR We sincerely appreciate the generous contributions made for this event, and we urge you to frequent the merchants and businesses represented in this booklet. When visiting these establishments, identify yourself as a member of the St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School community. - 11 - LIVE ITEMS 1 Dessert by Ginger Elizabeth & Wine or Champagne Time for dessert and wine! Bid on this fabulous treat from well-known chocolatier, Ginger Elizabeth. This dessert will be served at your table with a bottle of wine or champagne (your choice). Donor: Maren's Art Studio Maren Conrad and Jason Mininger Value: Scrumptious! 2 Preschool: Picasso’s Piano Our talented Teddy Bears worked together to paint a replica of Pablo Picasso’s “Three Musicians.” A child-sized baby grand piano served as the perfect canvas for this cubist pattern. Children followed a photocopied grid and added their own special touches to help create this beautiful work of art. The final surface was treated with marine spar varnish to protect the work from peeling, sun damage and liquid damage. This piano is the ultimate “first piano” for any child and will make a charming family heirloom for years to come. Donor: Preschool Class 3 Mama Kim Cooks for 10! Enjoy a fabulous dining experience with the delectable creations of Mama Kim. This is a sit down dinner for 10 and will be creatively prepared and presented in your home. The dinner includes both the food (menu selections) and the labor of one chef and one server. Tax, beverage, gratuity and rentals not included. Donor: Mama Kim Cooks Value: $1,000.00 4 Pre-Kindergarten: A Sculptural Tribute to Georgia O’Keefe Our Busy Bees’ love for flowers came out when they sculpted calla lilies out of Sculpey oven clay. Their delicate floral figures were then fired in a home oven and carefully displayed in a shadow box. Just as calla lilies make the perfect addition to any flower garden, this floral masterpiece will look beautiful hanging in any home. Donor: Julia Kelly Value: $2,000.00 - 12 - 6 Kindergarten: A Patio Celebration of Sunflowers Vincent van Gogh highlighted the bright, cheerful sunflower in his famous series of paintings. Donor: Hamilton Jewelers Value: $6,500.00 8 First Grade: Talk to the Hand - A Pop Art Homage to Michelangelo Just as Michelangelo took a whimsical approach in his paintings, our First Graders playfully used their hands to form the entire alphabet in sign language. A Polaroid snapshot was taken of each sign and then the students painted in the photographs with vibrant colors. The end result is a delightful display of the sign language alphabet. Donor: First Grade Class 9 Five Nights in Maui at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa with Two Round-Trip Airfare Tickets Enjoy your vacation in this full-service, four star hotel located on the golden sands of Wailea, Maui. This oceanfront hotel, adjacent to Wailea and Ulua beaches, is within easy walking distance of fabulous shopping. This resort features five pools and slides, including the new infinity-edged “Serenity” pool, with over-water bungalows and views of Maui’s neighboring islands. There are three championship golf courses and four restaurants (including one partially owned by Clint Eastwood). Choose between an ocean view or terrace room (one king or two queen beds). Round-trip airfare provided by United Airlines. Mutually agreed upon date for hotel and airfare—book early to ensure best dates. Expires March 7, 2011. Value: $4,000.00 10 Second Grade: Neoimpressionist Vineyard Landscape Our Second Graders learned a Post Impressionist art technique called “pointillism” to create this amazing series of vineyard landscapes. Students used their fingerprints to create clusters of grapevines on watercolor paper. Then, with watercolor paint and brushes they used a “wet-on-wet” technique to produce their final project. This series of individual paintings was matted and framed to form a breathtaking horizontal landscape. Donor: Second Grade Class - 13 - 11 Headmaster Dinner Honor Father Vaughan in a setting appropriate for an intimate dinner to appreciate our school's leader. Choose your table of eight with care, and experience another world in Cathy and John Fobes' wine cellar for the Headmaster's Dinner. The dinner will be grand, the wine will be fine, and your presence will make it extraordinary. Make this your night. Donor: Cathy and John Fobes Value: Unforgettable! 12 Third Grade: Mini Cooper The Mini Cooper emerged in England in 1959 and quickly achieved icon status around the world. Today, it’s regaining popularity after being resurrected by BMW in 2002. Our Third Graders could not wait to get their hands on these cute little cars! They came up with their own designs and used extra small paintbrushes to paint their very own Mini Cooper. And so, the Mini Cooper was born again. The cars are magnificently displayed in a shadow box where you can see the entire collection. Donor: Third Grade Class 13 Backyard Makeover! This backyard makeover will start with a $2,000 gift certificate from Emigh’s Casual Living for outdoor furniture. Then, get green in your landscape with award winning landscape architect John Nicolaus of The HLA Group. Mr. Nicolaus will come to your residence or commercial property to give you ideas and a conceptual sketch as to how to improve your landscape, make it more efficient and contribute to a greener and more beautiful environment. This consultation is valid for a total of either three hours on-site or drawing time and must be redeemed by July 1, 2010. Emigh’s Casual Living gift card has no expiration. Donors: Emigh’s Casual Living John Nicolaus of The HLA Group Value: $2,500.00 14 Fourth Grade: Flying High - A Collaboration of Aerial Landscapes Our Fourth Graders used their “aerial” imaginations to produce this spectacular landscape. They began by using scrapbook paper to cut out collage pieces that were adhered to watercolor paper. Acrylic paints were used to create rivers and roads to connect the diverse, patterned fields. Each of the students’ individual projects was puzzle-pieced together and then framed as one collective aerial landscape. The result is a beautiful landscape, similar to artist Wayne Thiebaud’s work when he used an aerial viewpoint to explore the Sacramento Valley. Donor: Fourth Grade Class 15 Las Vegas Weekend! Enjoy a weekend at the Palms Hotel & Spa in Las Vegas. This suite has breathtaking views and will accommodate up to four people. This trip is ideal for either a couple or a ladies’ or men’s getaway. With restaurants, shops, entertainment, pampering, gaming, and more, there’s plenty to do in Vegas. VIP passes to the Palms’ night clubs included. Must be redeemed by March 2011. Arrange one month in advance. Donor: Matina & Sotiris Kolokotronis Value: $1,500.00 - 14 - 16 A Pew with a View for Graduation! See your Eighth Grader up close as the students make their final St. Michael’s appearance. Donor: Fr. Jesse Vaughan Value: Emotion promotion! 17 Fifth Grade: Cezanne’s Table Our Fifth Graders used Paul Cezanne’s 1895 “Still Life with Apples and Oranges” painting as inspiration for this series of art. It includes eight dinner plates, eight salad plates and one large vase, all hand-painted by the students. The students used a collaborative process that allowed each student to paint a part of every dish. Just as French painter Cezanne strove to synthesize natural representation with personal expression, our fifth graders ventured into a world of pure self-expression. This eight-piece setting will be handed down for generations to come. Donor: Fifth Grade Class 18 Youth-Anize-Me -- The Fountain of Youth Makeover! Calkin-Boudreaux Dermatology Associates will make you over! The winner of this item is entitled to $3,500 worth of procedures and services. Take your pick of Fraxel, Titan, Pearl, laser genesis, Botox, Dysport, Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Radiesse, IPL for sun damage, sclerotherapy, Vbeam for rosacea and telangiectasia, laser hair removal or spa services. Donors: Dr. Jacqueline Calkin and Dr. Alison Boudreaux Calkin-Boudreaux Dermatology Associates Value: $3,500.00 19 Sixth Grade: Hanging on a Limb - A Sculptural Tribute to the Faberge Egg Students used duck and chicken eggs to create this unforgettable artwork. The eggs were first emptied and then treated with a coat of hardener and primer to make them more durable. Then, just as Peter Carl Faberge used precious metals and gemstones to create the original Faberge eggs, the Sixth Graders adorned their eggs with crystals, metallic paints and satin ribbon designs to create this incredible masterpiece. The original Faberge eggs are known all over the world and are sought after by many collectors. This breathtaking display of Faberge eggs, hanging from a Manzanita branch, is a poignant tribute to Peter Carl Faberge. Donor: Sixth Grade Class 20 Take a Ride on the San Francisco Bay in the Tiara 52' Yacht “Wingman” This will be an experience to remember! The winner may choose a day in either spring or fall for an exciting adventure aboard this beautiful yacht. Jim and crew will provide the food and drinks. Donor: James Diepenbrock Value: Cruising in Style! - 15 - 21 Seventh Grade: Currency Self-Portraits In a tribute to Andy Warhol’s pop art movement, our Seventh Graders created their own currency starring themselves. Each student took a self-portrait using the timer feature on a digital camera. The portraits were printed onto transparencies, and students used calligraphy techniques; a variety of textured, exotic paper; colored pencils and stamping tools to create unique designs. Their currency was then laminated and displayed in a shadow box. Warhol’s “200 One Dollar Bills” silk-screen artwork recently sold for $47 million, and we predict that this sensational display of currency self-portraits by our Seventh Graders will continue to grow more valuable through the years. Donors: Liza and Chris Micheli Jack, Kelley and Maureen Downey 25 Eighth Grade: The End of Time - Goodbye Polaroid Camera Goodbye St. Michael’s. Goodbye Polaroid Camera. It’s the end of an era. The Polaroid cameras are no longer being made, but local artist Maren Conrad purchased the last of the pre-expiration film on eBay to help create this final homage for our Eighth Graders. The students were given the liberty to go anywhere on campus with their camera to take a photo that best celebrated their memories of St. Michael’s. All of their photos were then placed together to create this montage – a poignant artwork that so gracefully captures all of the students’ finest memories.
