Welcome’ Gr. 9’s
to E.S.B.C.H.S…
Where collaboration is a craft in perpetual evolution!
As a partner in your educational experience, we offer diverse academic opportunities and extensive extra-curricular
possibilities, essentially providing the canvas for you to paint your own unique high school mosaic over the next four
years. Our hope is that through endeavoring to pursue refreshing new challenges, you will be inspired to
manoeuver your future with renewed confidence, competence and enthusiasm. Our intent is to help you discover a
program niche that will allow you to excel & evolve as an active learner, with aspirations of fulfilling abounding
opportunity well beyond high school.
We are proud to offer French Immersion programming as an alternative program. Academic streaming also begins
in grade 9, to provide beneficial programming as you embark upon your High School years. Our electives are
intended to introduce you to an array of experiences & then pursue ‘career & technology studies’ strands that match
your interests in Grade 10. With our ‘Cornerstone’ program we can offer a viable outlet to enhance student success
with extra learning supports within a smaller classroom setting to better prepare students for the increased rigor and
challenge of high school, with increased self-confidence and self-advocacy skills.
To ensure success in this collaborative approach you (the most valuable stake-holder) will also need to make a firm
commitment to your learning. This translates into consistent attendance and punctuality, a work ethic that
challenges your abilities and expands upon your skillsets, and diligence to improve your study habits and quality of
course work, in all subject areas. To foster a positive learning environment, you (the student) play a critical role in
modelling and maintaining mutual respect for all individuals…staff and students alike. We encourage you to engage
yourself in every learning experience and become actively involved in extra-curricular opportunities to feel
‘connected’ to our school.
Parents…you too are a crucial component in this collaboration. Your child’s success is in many ways, dependent
upon your support, as you work alongside our staff members at E.S.B.C.H.S. Your role in encouraging a conducive
learning environment at home would include establishing daily homework/review or study ROUTINES; monitoring
use/abuse of social media to reduce incidents of conflict, harassment and/or bullying; accessing Powerschool,
Blackgold websites and newsletters to remain informed and possibly most importantly, to initiate and maintain
positive and optimistic communication throughout each semester with your child’s teachers. Our school council also
welcomes new members and their refreshing ideas.
Our formula for student success will be solidified with dedicated students; committed staff and constructive parental
involvement throughout the entire high school experience. Working together as a cohesive unit…
E.S.B.C.H.S. can continue to be a place where “Bandit Pride” resides; relationships
evolve and flourish, and individuals can mature with abounding potential as they
embark on their quest for High School Graduation!

YEARBOOK
Every year, a dedicated crew of students spend countless hours gathering pictorial memories for the
E.S.B.C.H.S yearbook. Working as a part of the yearbook staff you will learn or improve upon digital
photography, publishing and journalistic skills. Students interested in assisting with the development of
the yearbook should contact Mrs. Taylor. Yearbook meetings take place over the lunch hour.
STUDENT ACTIVISTS FOR PEACE AND PRESERVATION (SAPP)
SAPP is working towards making the world a better place to live. As the group
is student driven, the causes we support will vary from year to year. SAPP
organizes a number of large events such as the 30 Hour Famine and Human
Rights Day Rally. Through fundraising efforts, SAPP supports charity
organizations such as War Child, World Vision, Operation Christmas Child,
Cancer Societies, local homeless shelters, the Food Bank and animal rescue
societies. In the past, SAPP has also coordinated tree - planting activities and
E-Waste round-ups.
Teacher contact: Mrs. Butler
QSA - QUEER–STRAIGHT ALLIANCE
The QSA - Queer–Straight Alliance is a student-led organization. The goal of our QSA is to make our
school community safe, facilitate activism, and create a welcoming environment for all students
regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The QSA is intended to provide a non-judgemental
and supportive environment between lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning
(LGBTQ) youth and their straight allies. We focus largely on anti-bullying events. We also like to partner
and support all activities within the school to spread awareness and a message of unconditional
acceptance.
SWAT “STUDENT WELLNESS ACTION TEAM”
The ESBCHS SWAT team is in its second term for the 2015/16 school year. This group was formed to
focus its’ efforts in the areas of physical and mental health for students and our school community. The
SWAT team is made up of members from grade 9 – 12 who will promote, educate, facilitate and
sponsor activities that ultimately foster wellness. The SWAT team will meet bi-monthly. This student
led group will determine the direction the SWAT team takes in the areas of physical and mental health.

Art 9
Design Studies 9
Unleash your imagination! This class is for anyone who
likes to draw, doodle, play and create. In Art 9 you will
begin a journey where you will be given the opportunity to
discover and build your skills. Along the way, you will
sample a variety of art forms and media. Begin by learning
basic drawing skills using simple shapes such as squares,
triangles and circles. You will be amazed at what you will
be able to draw! But there is so much more: wood and/or
soapstone carving, Paper Mache, glass etching, maybe
even stained glass! Release the artist within.
What the heck is a “picto word”, or a grid enlargement, or
mood colors? These are skills and techniques used to
grab your attention, to make you wonder and to dream the
impossible. You will learn to develop ideas from your
imagination and bring them to life on your page. One day,
long ago, flight by man was a dream. Today that dream
occurs every day thanks to pioneer designers and
dreamers…. live the dream.
Digital Media 9
This course introduces the students to the world of Digital
Media. The student will learn about computer cartoon
animation as well as the principles behind taking a good
picture with their digital cameras. Introductory Photoshop
skills will be introduced allowing students how to correct
and enhance the photos they have taken.
Drama 9
The Drama 9 course is a preparatory course for Drama 10
focusing on improvisational speaking and problem solving
skills. Although the sessions are practical and participatory
in nature, students will still be expected to keep notes and
prepare for written exams. There are no observers in
drama; everyone is expected to participate and play an
active part. Drama is a group process.
Foods 9
Can you tell the difference between a tablespoon and
teaspoon? Do you have an idea of how to measure hard
margarine without melting it? What about measuring
liquid vs dry ingredients? Is a cup always a cup? All of
these questions and more will be answered in Foods 9! In
theory, we will learn about food safety and sanitation,
helpful kitchen tips and techniques as well as basic table
etiquette. In practice, we will work through examples of
quick and easy breakfasts, lunches and dinners as well as
some delicious sweet treats sprinkled in for fun. All of the
skills you will learn throughout this course will be tested in
an amazing at-home project your family will enjoy. Come
for the food, stay for the challenge!

Religious Studies 9 is a study of the early church as
recorded in the book of Acts of the Apostles. After Christ
ascended, a few seemingly ordinary people empowered
by the Holy Spirit began to turn the world upside
down. The primary purpose is that students gain spiritual
understanding of the present work of God on earth
through the study of the example recorded in the

requires completion of online activities, assignments, and
a supervised final exam. All course materials are
delivered through ADLC’s secure website.
Sci Tech 9 (Science Technology)

This course will focus on experimentation and research.
There will be a number of practical labs that students will
complete as well as research using the Internet. Students
must want to do some construction.
SECOND LANGUAGES
French 9 (FSL)
Prerequisite: 50% in French 8

situations, stressing oral and written comprehension, as
well as oral and written production.

program in grade 7 or 8 you will not be eligible to enroll in
French 9. If desired, French 10/20/30 may be challenged

Spanish 9
This option course will combine various aspects of Alberta
Education's Spanish 7, 8 and 9 curriculums. It is designed
to introduce students to an alternative second language
