Pacific Area Travel Writers Association
MESSAGE FROM VINOD ZUTSHI
IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India
I am happy to know that Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) is organizing the World Tourism &
Aviation Leader Summit and the PATWA International
Seminar on Future of Travel followed by the PATWA
International Awards ceremony at ITB 2016.
The tourism and aviation sector work in synergy with
common objective to bridge the distance between
countries and promotion of destinations. India with its
improved infrastructure and world class airports with
enhanced capacity provides excellent connectivity to
destinations across the world. Travel from important
source markets to India has grown substantially and
so too within the country.
I am also happy to note that PATWA is also deliberating on the future of travel. Travel is gaining momentum
with advanced technology, better connectivity and
the desire of people across the world to travel either
for business or to explore new destinations and add to the wealth of their experiences.
I wish PATWA success for their events.

Some 50 million more tourists (overnight visitors) travelled to international destinations around the world last

GLOBAL WARMING: IMPACT ON TOURISM
PATWA International Seminar 2015 at WTM London
Tourism is both a vector and a victim of climate change. UNWTO research shows
that tourism accounts for 5% of global CO2 emissions. On the other side, rising sea
levels, coastal erosion, loss of biodiversity threaten the future of tourism. Although
progress has been made on multiple fronts, we need to step up our efforts to better understand the link between tourism and climate change, said Carlos Vogeler,
Director of UNWTO at the Pacific Area Travel Writes Association (PATWA) International Seminar during World Travel Market, London. The seminar was attended by
a large number of international media, diplomats and government representatives.
It focused on the issue of Global Warming: Impact on Tourism and how UNWTO
works towards its conservation.
Climate change is one of the greatest defies of our
times. As highlighted by the United Nations Secretary- General, Ban Ki-moon, ‘climate change is the
preeminent geopolitical and economic issue of the
twenty first century.’ It rewrites the global equation
for development, peace and prosperity, said Carlos
Vogeler.
He explained the UNWTO working to raise awareness on climate change issues in the tourism sector
and integrating tourism into United Nations and oth-
er international policy processes on climate change.
He emphasized on the Davos Declaration which was
implemented in 2007 by UNWTO, together with the
UN Environment Programme and the World Meteorological Organisation. The Declaration acknowledged the reality of climate change and its interrelationship with tourism and it also set a long-term
strategy required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from within the sector.

Vinod Zutshi, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of
India addressing the PATWA International Seminar on Global Warming & Its Impact on Tourism
ernment of India, said “Tourism sector is the least
polluting sector and is most eco-friendly. We need
to concentrate on the ill effects of Global Warming
and its impact on tourism. 73% of Himalayas are in
India, we project Himalayas as one of the major tourist places but strength of Himalayas is melting away
due to Global Warming. So these aspects have to
be seen and precautions should be taken to protect
them.”
protect the environment. He also talked about water
pollution. He added, “India has a network of major
rivers and has the largest peninsula. All prominent
cities of the world have been developed because of
the availability of rivers. As the number of tourists
increase, vehicles also increase, thus the air pollution and overcrowding. Therefore, its ill effects on
environment and solid waste management itself are
great challenges.”
He further said, “we have certain examples from
India: how ill effects of Global Warming hampered
tourism growth and affected environment and crucial steps were taken to cure it. We have started
‘Clean India Campaign’, ‘Initiation of CNG in all public transport’, ‘Save Ganga Campaign’ and more to
Addressing the seminar, J. Lipman, Director of
Greenearth said “the framework of WTO is a good
framework. The challenge is how they will get resources to focus on this issue. If we would not realize
and burn the fossil fuel at this rate, it will contribute
to ‘Climate Change’ and we will face many problems

Speaking on the occasion Sagar Ahluwalia, Secretary General of PATWA said, “PATWA has passed a
resolution known as ‘Berlin Declaration’ on Global
Warming where they tell the tourists to avoid destinations, hotels and airlines that don’t adhere to
green tourism. This will encourage these organizations to follow norms of eco tourism.”
PATWA visited the affected places and did articles
to support tourism in those areas.”
“We need to concentrate on the methods to cope
the harmful effects of Global Warming because
floods, tsunami, draughts, earthquakes are result of
environmental degradation. This will affect our future generations. We need to adopt smart methods
to conserve environment. Adding to this, he also focused on the role of PATWA during Tsunami in India and Indonesia. During the disaster, members of
