Mother’s Day
Proclamation
Arise, then, Christian women of this
day! Arise, all women who have
hearts, whether our baptism be of water or of tears! Say firmly: We will not
have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall
not come to us, reeking with carnage,
for caresses and applause. Our sons
shall not be taken from us to unlearn
all that we have been able to teach
them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, women of one country, will be
too tender of those of another country, to allow our sons to be trained to
injure theirs. From the bosom of the
devastated earth a voice goes up with
our own. It says: Disarm, disarm! The
sword of murder is not the balance of
justice. Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence vindicate possession. As men have often forsaken the
plough and the anvil at the summons
of war, let women now leave all that
may be left of home for a great and
earnest day of council.
Let them meet first, as women, to
bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them then solemnly take council with each other as to the means
whereby the great human family can
live in peace, man as the brother of
man, each bearing after his own kind
the sacred impress, not of Caesar, but
of God.

In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask that a general
congress of women, without limit of
nationality, may be appointed and
held at some place deemed most
convenient, and at the earliest period
consistent with its objects, to promote
the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.

WELCOME!
STAFF
A Note from Jim
Dear Friends,
Happy Mother’s Day!
Today, we acknowledge and celebrate the mothers amongst us—
mothers by their own definition.
Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of
mothers in society.
The celebration of Mother’s Day began in the United States in the early 20th century; it is not related to the many
celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the
world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult of Cybele, the Roman
festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration (originally
a celebration of the mother church, not motherhood), but in some countries
Mother’s Day has become synonymous with these older traditions.
At Cathedral of Hope, we celebrate mothers who are mothers by their own
definition.
Some mothers with us today may not be biological mothers, but there is a
“child” in her life who considers her a parent—“Mom.”
To these mothers, I say to you with first hand experience that you are every
bit a mother to such a person you love and steward because parenting is
a function—not a biological designation. Mom and Dad are earned roles.
My sister and I were adopted as infants, and we considered our late mother
every bit our mom even though she didn’t physically give birth to us.
Love, empathy, patience, humor, creativity, strength, curiosity—our mother
nurtured these qualities in us even though we had no biological connection.
“Mother is a verb. It’s something you do,” Houston minister Cheryl Lacey
Donovan once said.
Eve, the widow of Zarephath, Hannah, Mary—the Bible is filled with stories
of mothers who set amazing examples for all of humanity.
My mother is buried in a churchyard near my sister’s home. My sister will
visit my mother’s gravesite today and pay respects from both of us. Later
today, the two of us will get on Facebook and chat about Mom.
To her and all mothers, I say “Thank you,” and Happy Mother’s Day!
—Rev. Jim Mitulski, Interim Senior Pastor.

On the Cover: The “Appeal to womanhood throughout the world” (later known as
“Mother’s Day Proclamation”) by Julia Ward Howe was an appeal for women to unite
for peace in the world. Written in 1870, Howe’s “Appeal to womanhood” was a pacifist
reaction to the carnage of the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. In 1872
Howe asked for the celebration of a “Mother’s Day for Peace” on June 2 of every year, but
she was unsuccessful. The modern Mother’s Day is an unrelated celebration and it was
established by Anna Jarvis years later.

Mothering God, You Gave Me Birth
Jean Janzen’s innovative 1991 hymn, Mothering God, You Gave Me Birth,
draws on the writings of Julian of Norwich, (ca. 8 November 1342 – ca.
1416) an English anchoress who is regarded as one of the most important
Christian mystics, to speak of the three parts of the Trinity: “Mothering God,
you gave me birth… Mothering Christ, you took my form… Mothering
Spirit, nurturing one…” The text is interesting because it not only uses maternal
images for each part of the Trinity, but also uses vivid metaphors throughout
and puts the Trinity in intimate relationship with the believer. It is brought to
life by pairing it with the beautiful hymntune NORWICH by Carolyn Jennings,
Professor Emerita of Music at St. Olaf College where she taught for many years
and also served in administrative roles, including being Chair of the Music
Department and Associate Dean for the Fine Arts.

In Hindu tradition Mother’s
Day is called “Mata Tirtha
Aunshi” or “Mother
Pilgrimage fortnight”, and
is celebrated in countries
with a Hindu population,
especially in Nepal. The
holiday is observed on the
new moon day in the month
of Baisakh, i.e., April/May.
This celebration is based
on Hindu religion and it
pre-dates the creation of the
US-inspired celebration by
at least a few centuries.
The Jewish population celebrates Mother’s Day on
Shevat 30 of the Jewish calendar, which falls between
30 January and 1 March.
The celebration was set as
the same date that Henrietta
Szold died. Henrietta had no
biological children, but her
organization Youth Aliyah
rescued many Jewish children from Nazi Germany
and provided for them. She

The 23rd Psalm
Our Anthem this morning is Bobby
McFerrin’s setting of the words of
Psalm 23. McFerrin is most associated with the song “Don’t Worry,
Be Happy,” and is an improvisational jazz vocal phenomenon and an
orchestral conductor. When speaking
of his setting of Psalm 23, McFerrin
said, “The 23rd Psalm is dedicated

WAS GOTT THUT
7
This hymn, written by the English
musician, Sir Henry Baker, paraphrases Psalm 23—without question the
most beloved of the psalms and one
of the most beloved of all scriptures. Families often request the reading of
the 23rd Psalm at funerals, because its
words offer so much comfort—but they
strengthen us also in happier moments. These words remind us that we worship a God who loves us—who cares
about our welfare—who provides for
our needs. We need that reminder,
because life is not always easy. In life’s
less gentle moments, Psalm 23 reminds
us that God is still at work in our lives
and that we have nothing to fear. The
hymn tune ST. COLUMBA is named
for the Irish saint who “carried the
torch of Irish Christianity to Scotland”
(and who has the dubious distinction
of being the first to report a sighting of
the Loch Ness monster, in 546). It is
one of the Irish melodies collected by
George Petrie (1789-1866) and given in
Charles Villiers Stanford’s “Complete
WAS GOTT THUT
Collection of Irish Music as noted by
George Petrie,” in 1902. The association of the tune with this text, and also
its harmonization, are from “The English
Hymnal,” 1906. The hymn was sung at
the funeral
5 of Diana, Princess
5 of Wales,
in Westminster Abbey, London, on
September 6, 1997.
We Fall Down
We fall down, we lay our crowns at the feet of Jesus;
The greatness of mercy and love at the feet of Jesus.
And we cry, “Holy, holy, holy.”
And we cry, “Holy, holy, holy.”
And we cry, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lamb.”

**PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Modern Lesson (from page 4)
Our Modern Lesson today is a Prayer for a Nonviolent Life from the book,
The Nonviolent Life by John Dear. Father John Dear is an American Catholic
priest, Christian pacifist, author, lecturer, and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, who
has been arrested over 75 times in acts of nonviolent civil disobedience against
war, injustice and nuclear weapons. He will be our guest next Saturday, May 17,
at 6 p.m. as Hope for Peace and Justice sponsors an evening of discussion on
nonviolent protests. Hear this prayer:
Help me to practice loving nonviolence toward everyone I know and meet, that
I might love my neighbor as myself, and never hurt anyone ever again. Help me
to be nonviolent to all creatures and all creation, that I may spread your peace far
and wide to all sentient beings, to your beautiful creation. Give me a heart as wide
as the world that I might love everyone around the world, even those targeted as
“enemies” by my nation. Open my heart to love every human being as my sister and
brother, that I might practice your universal nonviolent love from now on.
God of peace, thank you for being gentle, loving, compassionate, and nonviolent! You are so nonviolent that you do not force yourself upon us, but gently
call us to your wisdom and way of nonviolence. You give us the freedom to do
as we will. Help us to do your will of peace, to choose your way of nonviolence.
Help us to live nonviolent lives, to become your holy people of nonviolence, to
welcome your reign of peace and nonviolence here on earth.
Help me to serve your reign of peace by joining the global grassroots movement of
nonviolence. Make me an instrument of your peace, that I might do my part to help
abolish war, poverty, hunger, racism, sexism, executions, nuclear weapons, systemic injustice and environmental destruction, and welcome your nonviolent reign of
peace with justice here on earth. Bless this grassroots movement of nonviolence
with your wisdom, your determination, and your persistent action that we might

Thinking About Volunteering?
eing a volunteer is a rewarding pursuit, but if you’re like the rest of us, it’s
often hard to find that perfect fit, that volunteering environment where our
talents, knowledge, and passions lie. How do we even know where to look? Try
starting here! Here are some areas where we are currently seeking volunteers:
Connect through Circles of HOPE
Almost 44 years ago Cathedral of Hope was born when a circle of 12 friends
gathered in a home to renew their faith, share in fellowship and encourage
one another along this journey of life. This “Circle of Hope” grew to be our
church with more than 4000 members and now shares the message of God’s
inclusive love around the world. In a church this large, it is still important to

Why We Need Church,
Community, and Covenants
with Jesus Christ enough? And how does
our tradition as a united and uniting church
in the UCC uniquely answer the questions:
What is Church? Why is it necessary? And
how should we live together in community? This course will draw on UCC pastor Lillian Daniel's book "When Spiritual

Bonhoeffer's timeless work, "Life Together,"
Martin Luther King's concept of "the beloved
community," the covenantal theology and

Facilitator: Rev. Anna Humble
Increasingly we live in a "spiritual-but-notreligious" society. Americans have abandoned the Church in droves in favor of
spending their Sunday mornings and spare
change at Starbucks. And can we blame
them? Church can often be a dysfunctional
family that makes inconvenient demands
on one's time, patience, and money. It's
also easy to become disillusioned with the
Church when we watch the news to see the
broad brush of hypocrisy with which we
are painted. But is there still a place for
intentional religious community in modern
American society, and if so, how can we
make room for it in our busy lives? Does
the Bible actually demand that we practice
a life together, or is a personal relationship

Same-sex pairs of saints, acknowledged by
the Church since early times, have shown
that early Christianity was not negative
towards same-sex attraction at all. This
study will look at three sets of Paired Saints:
Perpetua and Felicity, Sergius and Bacchus,
and Polyeuct and Nearchus, and examine the
stories of their lives and deaths, the sources
for their revered status, modern commentators on them, and the potential difference
their existence as saints of the Church make
for us today. No previous knowledge of
them is required, and everyone is welcome
to attend.
Please bring snacks to share. We’ll have
water, tea and lemonade to drink. Contact
Anita at [email protected] if
you have any questions about game night.

What is God Telling You?
Tuesday, May 27 and June 3
Gathering at 6:45. Class at 7:15 p.m.

Facilitator: Brad Syverson,

We want to be open to God’s direction
for us in making life’s decisions, but how
do we know what God wants? Is it possible that our dreams hold some of the
answers? In this class, we’ll take a look
at the rich biblical tradition of God sending messages through dreams. We will
also look at practical ways we can use to
understand what our dreams can teach
us about God’s direction for our lives.
This is an experiential class that teach
you to look at your dreams in new ways.
Classes are independent of each other so
come as you can and bring your intention

A
s the 50 Days of Eastertide continued, the disciples never knew
when Jesus might show up and some
of them had gone back to living their
lives as they had done before meeting
Jesus.
A group of them had resumed fishing
and one morning after having fished
unsuccessfully all night, they noticed a
man on the shore who instructed them
to lower their nets on the other side
of the boat if they wanted a big catch.
Following the suggestion, they pulled
back a net so full of fish that they had
trouble getting them all aboard.
One of the Disciples, suddenly recognizing the man on the shore, cried, “It
is the Lord,” and Peter swam ashore to
meet him. Jesus then hosted a fish fry
breakfast for his followers and had a
long conversation with Peter about his
role in leadership after Jesus’ imminent final departure. This encounter
on the shore of Lake Tiberius reminded the followers that their chief aim
was not to fish for fish, but for people.
Jesus fills the Disciples’ nets.

or are overwhelmed with schedules or deadlines. But every Wednesday we make an effort to meet for worship and find our inner peace.
So, you are welcome to our Messy Spirituality Group of Young Adults which meets every Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. in room CLC 107. There you will find acceptance, love, compassion and radical inclusion. The Bible is full of messy spiritual characters. Join us as we explore their lives and our own messiness.
If you can’t make the Wednesday night meetings at 6:15 p.m., but would like to join us for our outside events, please keep in touch. We have a private Facebook
group as well as a public one. We use the private one for messages among the group, picture sharing and for other personal information we might not want spread
all over the internet. Contact Brittney McCormick at [email protected] to be added on the private Facebook page.
This July, we would like to take a mission trip to New Mexico with you as part of the first Young Adults group trip. We believe that through work, worship, fellowship and a camp fire, we can get to know each other better. For more information please contact Yadi at [email protected] or at 214-351-1901 x220. We hope you will join us!

Author John Dear Brings Message of Nonviolence to Dallas
J
THIS Saturday, May 17, 6 p.m.
ohn Dear is a consistent voice for the power of non-violence. He joins a long line of Christian activists in his conviction that non-violence is the way to live the Gospel, to become the Beloved Community and to change the world. One of the most memorable of his actions for justice was a 1993 Plowshares action. On December 7, 1993, John Dear, Philip Berrigan, Lynn Fredriksson, Bruce Friedrich walked onto the Seymour Johnson
Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina at four in the morning. There were war games going on at the time. The
group came upon an F-15E nuclear-capable fighter bomber, and “hammered upon it to fulfill Isaiah’s prophecy that
someday ‘they shall beat their swords into plowshares and study war no more’.” They were convicted of two felony
charges: destruction of government property (though the bomber barely showed the hammer marks) and conspiracy to
commit a federal crime. Dear spent 9 months in prison with Philip Berrigan. He later wrote, “If we want to pursue justice, disarmament and peace, as followers of Jesus, then we have to take up the
cross and risk persecution, trouble, prison, even death and then resurrection. That’s the Christian way to peace. That’s
the daring challenge of active nonviolence in a world of total violence. In other words, we have to be willing to sacrifice
ourselves for the struggle for justice and peace, as Nelson Mandela showed.”
He asks: “How do we follow someone who did civil disobedience in the Temple, and was subsequently arrested, tortured
and executed? What does discipleship to this revolutionary, nonviolent Jesus mean in a world of nuclear weapons and permanent war?” Dear’s latest book, The Nonviolent Life, explores ways that we can all live a nonviolent life, “to be nonviolent toward ourselves, toward all people, creatures and
creation and joining the global grassroots movement of nonviolence.” Join us on Saturday, May 17 at 6 p.m. for a gathering and reception time with John followed by his presentation at 7 p.m.

Harvey Milk Day Celebration 2014
Thursday, May 22, 8 p.m.
In celebration of the life of Harvey Milk— slain LGBT rights pioneer, champion for rights of all marginalized peoples, and the first openly gay man elected
to public office—H4PJ is sponsoring Harvey Milk Day on Thursday, May
22 at the Legacy of Love Monument (Cedar Springs at Oak Lawn) starting at
8 p.m. This gathering is not to mourn, but to celebrate, inspire, and continue
Milk’s legacy of liberation, reconciliation, and hope. Volunteers are needed for
this event. Contact Todd Whitley.
Seven board members were recently added to the board of H4PJ. They are
(from top left to right, bottom) Christopher (Kory) Beale, Daniel Scott Cates,
Sheila Coughlin, Zanté Garcia, Rev. Jeff Hood, Ray Jordon, and John McGrail.
They join existing board members Steven Jolly, Angie Wilson, Michael
Magnia, Elizabeth Parker and board chair Todd Whitley. Garcia and McGrail
were recently affirmed by the Cathedral of Hope Board of Stewards for the two
open positions of the four the Cathedral of Hope appoints.
These new members bring a broad diversity of life experiences, activism, and
spirituality to the organization.

MONEY MATTERS
AUTO-GIVERS PLEASE READ
Did you know you can increase your giving to the church without increasing
your giving?
At the April 28th Board meeting, I shared with those in attendance the church
could save $20,000 - $30,000 annually without asking the congregation to
increase their giving.
T
Pastoral Search Committee
he Pastoral Search Committee was named at the March 17 Board of
Stewards meeting. After being introduced to the congregation at the Town
Hall Meeting on March 29, committee members met with UCC South Central
Conference Minister, Rev. Douglas Anders, who described the advantages of
using the UCC Search Process and shared his wisdom about this process. On
April 29, the committee met with Rev. Jim Mitulski, seeking his knowledge and
advice about the position of Senior Minister. At the committee’s next meeting a
Chair and Secretary will be chosen, and the process of writing the church profile, which will be posted on the UCC Website, will begin.
Auto-givers authorize the Church to either: (1) Charge their credit/debit card;
or (2) Draft money directly from their bank account (ACH), on a specific day.
The processing fees are much higher for credit/debit card charges as compared To put together a church profile, committee members will solicit feedback from
the congregation and staff in various ways—one of which is to meet with conto the bank drafts. For example, if you use:
gregants at “listening sessions” scheduled for May 27, May 31, June 10 and
Credit /Debit Card, and you give $100 the Church receives$95.00
June 15.
Bank Draft, and you give $100
the Church receives $99.75 Please sign up to participate in a listening session at the table in the Ministry
In the above example, an auto-giver who elects to have their contributions
made by a Bank Draft gives 4.75% more than an auto-giver who elects a charge
to their credit/debit card. In addition, the Church receives your donations from
bank drafts days earlier than donations made by credit/debit cards.
Changing your auto-giving from Credit/Debit Cards to Bank Drafts (ACH) is
an easy way of increasing your support to the Church without costing you any
more money. All you need to start is a VOIDED Check.
Center. Sessions are limited to 20 participants.
Pastoral Search Committee members are: Dennis Bolin, Elias Cantu, Lee
Dewey, Steven Fontaine, Sylvia Franze, Natalia Johnson, Brandon Kirk, Susan
Perry, Roger Poindexter. Alternates are Shannon Bailey and Donna Jackson.
Listening Sessions with the
Pastoral Search Committee:
I hope you will consider making this change to your auto-giving, if you can.
During the month of May, the Board of Stewards and members of the Finance Tuesday, May 27
Committee will be available to help you with the paper-work to make this Saturday, May 31
change happen.
If you have not signed up to be an auto giver, then I hope you will consider Tuesday, June 10
doing so.
