Location:
The muncipality of Babina Greda is located in the south-west area of
Vukovarsko-srijemska county, by the important highway route - D4 ZagrebLipovac and international coridor X.
Municipality shares borders with six Croatian local authorities and shares a
state border with Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the river Sava.
General information:
The municipality of Babina Greda is a local self-government unit which
includes 79,48 km² of a land (8 009 ha of which is a flatland and 1151 ha is a
woodland). It is known as a one of the biggest cadastral territory in the
county.
According to the last population census from 2001., Babina Greda has 4 262
inhabitants, 2 179 are women and 2 083 men.
There are 344 active farmers and 1090 inhabitants who live mainly of
agriculture. The municipality is making efforts in rural, agriculture and farm
development. 30 % of Vukovarsko-srijemska county´s livestock is located in
Babina Greda, and municipality itself is very well known for horse husbandry.
Besides agriculture, the local economy is based on small entrepreneurship
and commerce. In Babina Greda there are 55 SMEs, one trade association
and 23 civil society and organizations.
The municipality of Babina Greda has a rich history and tradition which has
been well preserved and promoted through the work of local organizations
who are contributing to the local tourist and cultural offer.
Opportunities:
The municipality is looking for the opportunity for economic cooperation.
There are natural potentials which could stimulate that kind of cooperation:
- high quality cultivated areas,
- woodland,
- emplacements of boulder and sand,
- drinking and thermal water wells
- great traffic position (highway entrance, future Dunav-Sava river canal).
Also one of the most important projects for the municipality in the future will
be the construction of a multifunctional auction hall for trade events, stock
markets, cultural and sports events, and other public events which would
include tourism and catering.
