But while you might see an increase in traffic and crowds this summer – and a decrease in parking – take a moment to reflect on the fact that eastern CT is a major tourism and economic hub in New England. More visitors than ever are anticipated to visit our region this year, following an estimated 12 percent rise in tourism between 2014 and 2015, according to the Connecticut Office of Tourism (CTVisit.com). Perhaps visitors come to Connecticut to soak in its beautiful beaches, or to absorb its history, or to experience its state and local parks, world-class entertainment facilities and museums, quaint downtowns lined with shops, or its delicious, fresh food. No matter the reason, it’s clear that our region has plenty to offer. Become a ‘local tourist’ and fall in love with our region and its attractions. For the history buff, eastern CT is truly awash in cultural treasures. Reacquaint yourself with our mighty submarine fleet’s history at the Submarine Force Library & Museum in Groton. Learn about the indigenous cultures of our region at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center in Mashantucket. Kids Quest & Cyber Quest at Mohegan Sun has enough activities to keep the young ones occupied for hours while you enjoy the casino’s sights and offerings. The popular Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is nearby, as is Mystic Aquarium, whose 27 acres of marine-related exhibits delight kids of all ages. Nautical enthusiasts unite! Eastern CT has a generous offering of waterborne activities. Learn about New London’s turbulent relationship with the Thames River and Long Island Sound at the New London Maritime Society/Custom House Maritime Museum.
