Dear Chamber Members,
We are proud to look back on the Chamber’s accomplishments in 2014. Through our more than
150 programs and events, our upgrade to the member-management computer software system
called ChamberMaster, our vigorous presence across social and traditional media platforms and
the redesign of all our publications, we kept our members up to date on everything they needed to
know to grow their businesses.
In 2014 the Chamber continued its successful partnership with the Builders and Remodelers
Association of Eastern Connecticut on the region’s only truly local Home Show, and our second
annual Total Life Expo provided another wonderful venue for members to showcase their products
and services. Our first-ever Women in Leadership Business Breakfast proved an inspiring and
motivational event for all involved. The inaugural and popular Tourism Marketing Boot Camps
established in 2013 and continued in 2015 underscored our commitment to the region’s service and
tourism industries.
Our commitment to tourism is clear, whether it is through Chamber President Tony Sheridan’s
selection as Grand Marshal of the Mystic Irish Parade or the Chamber’s steady stewardship of the
Greater Mystic Visitors Bureau. In 2014 we hired a consultant to review the Mystic.org website’s
performance, and in 2015 improvements will be made that will once again increase our members’
visibility to the outside world.
The Chamber’s participation in the 2013 trip to Australia to market our region paid off huge
dividends in 2014, as the Aerospace & Defense International Trade Summit was held at the Mystic
Marriott Hotel and Spa. A similar junket in 2014 to Toronto was also a great success.
Our membership in 2014 remained strong, as we added 157 new business members and dozens
of new Young Professional members. The 27th year of our Leadership program continues to
attract the future decision-makers, and the Class of 2016 is full. On social media, we increased our
Facebook following by 14 percent, our Twitter following by 28 percent, and our Instagram following
by 168 percent. We began using Pinterest to market our member businesses with boards dedicated
to holidays and events and initialized our Instagram account. Tony Sheridan published nearly a
dozen op-ed pieces in The Day, The Bulletin and the Connecticut Mirror.
The Chamber also created a partnership with the Southeastern Connecticut World Affairs Council,
a local chapter of an international organization that brings fascinating and informative speakers
to the region. We applied for and received a grant that will allow us to help our member small
businesses prepare for and then respond to any future natural disasters.
The Chamber’s finances remain strong as well. Of course, none of this would happen without the
leadership of the Board and Trustees, and the dedication and hard work of the Chamber’s staff.
We look forward to an exciting and productive 2015.

Community Involvement
Chamber Leadership ECT Program
In continous operation since 1987, the Leadership program prepares future community leaders for positions of responsibility by
acquainting them with significant community processes and issues that affect not only our communities, but also businesses and
the public. Over 500 business leaders have completed the course. During the first year of the program, participants spend one day
a month becoming acquainted with a variety of operations in the community. Class participants also pick a volunteer project to
work on together as part of the process. In the second year, participants build relationships with established leaders while planning
sessions for the incoming class.
Leadership Class
of 2015
This past year, the class took on a community service project with Reliance House Inc. Participants fundraised a record amount,
which was used to refurbish two client houses in Norwich. Classmates and volunteers from A Beautiful Company General
Contractors spent a day painting, planting, and redecorating the houses, and donated a grill, new mattresses, and all kinds of
toiletries for residents. They even organized a surprise visit from an ice cream truck! At the Leadership Retreat in June, the group
presented the remaining funds, totalling nearly $5,000, to Reliance House.

In 2014 we redesigned our monthly
newsletter, Voice, to underscore our
commitment to our small business
members. New sections dedicated to
showcasing member and benefactor
news, Service Person of the Month, the
activities of the Chamber’s councils and
committees, including EWIB, all make
the Voice more valuable to our members.
It is now full color, and features member
advertising instead of flyers.
eNews: Your Weekly Update
We redesigned our eNews in 2014 to
make it easier to scan for our busy
membership. We added a jobs section
to highlight the fact that members
can now post openings on our
website, and more news about what’s
happening at the Chamber.

Workforce Development
We continued our work with the Eastern
CT Workforce Investment Board (EWIB) to
supervise the Business Services Team at
Connecticut Workforce Centers in eastern CT
covering a 41 town region. This encompassed
providing assistance to businesses in
recruiting, training both new (On the Job
Training) and current (Incumbent Worker
Training) employees. Additionally, information
and support are being provided to businesses
on the DOL initiative (Step Up) on subsidized
training and employment for new employees.
A focus is being placed on unemployed
veterans wage reimbursment. Labor market
information on wages, tax credits, and
downsizing assistance was also provided.

seeing value in membership after a year

CTSBDC
The Chamber continues its partnership with
the Connecticut Small Business Development

serve on a team of twelve advisors serving the
state to provide no-cost, confidential assistance,
including business plan review, social media
training, market research and guidance with loan

community in Greater New London County and
he is available to meet clients at the Chamber
office in Waterford.
SECWAC
The Chamber established a partnership in
2014 with SECWAC, a regional membership
organization. SECWAC aims to foster an
understanding of issues of foreign policy and
international affairs through study, debate, and
educational programming. It provides a forum
for nonpartisan, non-advocacy dialogue between
our members and U.S. policy makers and other
experts on foreign relations. The Chamber helps
raise public awareness of SECWAC and its 8-10
annual meetings and activities.

Tourism
New London Tourism Booth
2014 Report
The New London Tourism Booth saw a 4 percent
increase year over year, and welcomed 732 visitors
to the booth in the heart of downtown New London.
Visitors came from 34 states and the District of
Columbia as well as 21 foreign countries. The bulk
was from Connecticut – 298 – but they came from
as far away as Hawaii, Australia, and India. There
were 86 children included among the visitors.
Nearby, New York had the second highest
representation, followed by Massachusetts,
Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. This shows that
the Eastern Regional Tourism District’s marketing
campaign, which targeted those states, worked. The
highest number of foreigners came from Australia,
followed by Canada, zGermany and France.

with him recipes from several of our

huge hit.

The Chamber continued to host the
operations of the Greater Mystic
