Annual Report 2013 - Waterford Country School
www.waterfordcountryschool.org
From our Executive Director
This past year, the voice from
our team was Whatever it takes.
Jim Collins, a famous author of popular business books, once wrote about,
“first who, then what”. He was talking about the importance of an
organization building its team before deciding on its direction. That is
precisely what we have done. First, we have a Board with seventeen
committed members who have an average tenure of 15 years of service.
Then we have an Agency Leadership Team of 11 persons with an average
tenure of about 19 years of service. In addition to longevity is the ability
and commitment of these folks to drive the Agency towards its mission.
In addition to getting the right people “on the bus,” he also talks about
getting those people in the right seats on the bus. 2013 marked the first
year for this particular group of Board Members and Agency leaders, in their current roles, and the results
have been remarkable. Then, in addition to the leadership becoming a strong team, each of them in turn
developed a strong team within their departments and programs.
To assist our powerful Board and Staff Teams, we have an amazing team of community supporters that have
provided additional resources to enable us to provide the highest quality of services to our children and
families. As I looked around the room the night of our Kabaret last fall, I saw a couple of hundred people
who have taken an interest in what we do and who have pledged to support our work. It was an amazing
feeling.
There have been many accomplishments over this past year, none greater than the acquisition of the
Connecticut Adoption and Family Services as part of the array of services at Waterford Country School. As
that organization was facing dissolution, we partnered to preserve the staff, programs and services of that
Agency. The transition was very successful and the program is now a vital part of our community services
division in Norwich.
There have been many other accomplishments as well:

We broke ground for the Otto Graham Gym and battled the weather to get the foundations in before
winter. The project is expected to be finished by the fall of 2014. We have successfully raised
85% of the total costs of construction and are working hard on the final 15%.
We improved campus safety with a new locking system for the school and an improved visitor check
in system.
We have replaced three cottage roofs and the large emergency power generator that services most
of the main campus.
In cooperation with the Regional DCF office, we piloted a new Short-Term Family Intensive Treatment
(S-FIT) program to assist families who are struggling to be able to stay together.
We hosted a 3-day visit by Jim Anglin, a noted author and researcher from the University of Victoria
as he came to observe our treatment model.
We piloted two new programs for Cornell University: CARE for Foster Carers and a one-day training
on compassion fatigue.
We certified 15 staff as CARE Trainers through Cornell University.
We expanded our school program by one classroom and piloted an 8-child after-school program as
an extension of our summer camp.
We initiated a series of meetings between our Board and staff that included all programs and
departments within one year’s time.
“2013 marked the first year
for this particular group of Board
Members and agency leaders, in their
current roles, and the results have been remarkable.”
William Martin, Executive Director
Beyond the accomplishments of this past year, we are faced with the growing challenges of being
a non-profit agency in Connecticut in this decade. The rising costs of operations, coupled with the
shrinking community funding, creates challenges of great proportions. With this talented and
creative team of Board and staff, we are proactive in program evolution and fiscal responsibility to
ensure that Waterford Country School stays strong and can go on to meet the complex needs of our
children and families well into the future.
We look back on 2013 with great pride and look forward to 2014 with great anticipation.
William Martin

Chairman, Board of Trustees
The Forever Farm Fund
It’s in our NatUre to provide
the best model of Care.
The Waterford Country School has created a Farm Forever Fund, a permanent endowment to provide
financial support for the care of animals in our Experiential Education and Wildlife Rehabilitation
programs. The operating costs associated with caring for the animals on our farm are $180,000 per
year, which presents great challenges for our non-profit budget. Year after year, we find the funds to
support the farm as it is such an important part of who we are.
All of the animals on our farm have been adopted and the majority of the animals in our wildlife
program are rehabilitating from an injury and, when possible, they are returned to their natural
habitat. When it is not possible, they live on our campus and are cared for daily. As part of their life
and care on the farm, they interact with the special-needs youth at Waterford Country School creating
a highly therapeutic environment for both.
Your gift to the Farm Forever Fund is a lasting contribution ensuring that each animal we care for has
a better future. Your tax-deductible donation will be acknowledged by the Waterford Country School.
Please consider contributing to this fund and help us to carry on the work we do to make a difference
for the animals we adopt and care for and the children we serve. We couldn’t do the work we do
without friends like you!
To learn more about our programs and the Farm Forever Fund, visit www.waterfordcountryschool.org.
You may also contact the Development Office at (860) 442-9454 or [email protected].
“With rising costs for animal care and maintenance,
support for our farm is more crucial than ever.”
Rick McPherson, Program Director
The Otto Graham Gymnasium
and Activity Center
Since January there has been construction on the Waterford Country School campus. The new Otto
Graham Gymnasium and Activity Center is being built and anyone driving by the campus on Hunts Brook
Road can see the construction activity, concrete slabs, roofing, walls and other features. It will serve
more than 300 residents and students each year. It will include a full-size basketball court, various
offices, a stage and a fitness center. A lovely landscape will surround the building, including a brick
walkway, trees, plantings, outdoor benches and tables. Funding has been provided by state bonds,
corporate and foundation grants and private donations. Proceeds from our fundraising
events have also contributed to the project.
The Otto
Graham
Gymnasium &
Activity Center
will be open in
Fall 2014.
