I am delighted to bring you our fresh look
VT Event Guide for Autumn/Winter 2015.
Since its first publication in early 2013,
the range of events on offer from venues
in and around our cultural and heritage
quarter has increased at such a rate that
we were encouraged to consider a larger
format publication to highlight all that is
on offer. We hope, as a local or visitor,
you will find plenty to entertain you in
Waterford’s Viking Triangle.

About the Waterford Viking Triangle
The cultural and historic centre of Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, where
in 914 A.D. the Vikings first settled. It is a tranquil place, characterised
by narrow streets, historic architecture, atmospheric public spaces and
unique cultural and heritage attractions.
Wander through Waterford’s Viking Triangle, visit the home of the global
brand that is Waterford Crystal, nine national monuments including
13th & 15th century undercrofts located in the award winning Medieval

A glass symposium: Contemporary contexts for Glass in Tourism, Design and
Technologies running from 18 to 19th Sept. Waterford The Glass City, famous for its
crystal production, is hosting an exciting two-day symposium of glass. There is an
interesting range of international speakers with the key note speaker Susan Joker
Johansen of Denmark’s European Glass Context who will discuss Designing a Future for
a Living Tradition. Other speakers will discuss areas of design, education, tourism and
will present new advances and technologies which explore heritage, culture and skills
in glassmaking, and offer new possibilities which could build liaisons to create a new
future for glass in Ireland.
Imagine Arts Festival presents a feast of arts activities, exhibitions, concerts &
workshops with more than 100 events scheduled around the city, over ten days
between 15 & 25 October.
This event open to the public, aims to engage members from various community and
social groups both in Ireland and internationally in an effort to explain and experience
first hand the advances in the sector, from that of factory worker to designer, creator,
educator, engineer and entrepreneur
This event hosted by WIT in their main campus on The Cork Road is free to local unemployed glassmakers with presentation
of evidence of previous employment and social welfare card. General admission is 25 Euro per person. For more information

Exciting new developments this year include a cafe trail involving local musicians & a
kite display at the new Eco Park in Kilbarry. There is an extensive music line up which includes “Danu” who are celebrating their
20th birthday and appearing at The Tower Hotel on Friday 16th. Other musical treats
include “This is the Kit” and folk guitarist supremo Martin Simpson who has played
with everybody from Richard Thompson to Steve Miller. The festival also incorporates a
traditional music weekend dedicated to the great New Ross fiddler John Dwyer which
runs from 16 – 18 October and includes a trail around The Viking Triangle.
Some top class authors are visiting including both John Banville and Paul Durcan. Local
artist Pat Murphy will showcase a major exhibition at Greyfriars Gallery.
On the theatre side the festival includes an exciting young Tipperary writer Aine Ryan,
performing her own show ‘Kitty in the Lane’ in Central Arts on 17th and 18th October
complimented by an exciting two day playwrights workshop which will incorporate
emerging writers from The Three-Sisters area of Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny.

Waterford Festival of Architecture
Friday 16th – Sunday 18th October 2015
Now in its 14th year, Waterford Festival of Architecture works towards enhancing the understanding
and appreciation of architecture among the wider community, including creative practitioners of other
artistic disciplines.
The theme of this year’s festival is “Origins” and will encourage the public to engage with the city and
catchment area on a more intimate level, with visits to houses, public buildings, lectures, events, tours
and walks all the while exploring different aspects of the theme in city and county. A brand new event
“Behind Closed Doors”, will celebrate Waterford’s rich and varied architecture, with opportunities to
visit properties rarely open to the public. Highlights of the 2015 Programme include “The Mies Van Der Rohe International Exhibition”. This
show platforms design excellence to the design, construction and educational sectors, promotes
dialogue and awareness in the local community, and endeavours to increase appreciation of, and
demand for, exemplary architecture, interior and landscape design. It is a great honour to have
Waterford City and County Council’s Department of Architecture recognised by this prestigious
European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies Van Der Rohe Award and shortlisted for
their stunning design of The Medieval Museum. This is a unique opportunity to see all of these 40
shortlisted projects here in Waterford.

Artist Milia T. Maddock intended to create
compositions with abstract forms that convey
a mood. The paintings all differ and the
intention was to allow the viewer to explore and
develop their own perception of the randomlike forms. These compositions all try to allude

our life and in ourselves.

Winterval, Ireland’s largest Christmas festival

Panto- “Jack & The Beanstalk”

The Waterford Panto Society are back for this
their 30th anniversary production with family
favourite ‘Jack and The Beanstalk’. Directed by
Waterford’s own Richie Hayes, this production is
full of up to date music and side splitting comedy
routines that will have the whole family rolling with
laughter in the aisles. With the panto dancers
under the direction of Erica Delaney-Hayes
and full live Panto Band with MD Wayne Brown,
Waterford Spraoi designed sets and stunning
lighting and costumes, it promises to continue the
quality tradition of Waterford’s longest running
family event of the year. All the familiar local
faces are back for another season of mayhem in
Theatre Royal.
