Gama Bears A Force to be Reckoned With
Gama Bears A Force to be Reckoned With Taiwan e-Sports League (TeSL) was established in January 2008. In July the same year, Gamania formed its eSport team, Gama Bears taking resemblance to the uniqueness and strength of Formosan Black Bear. That was the beginning of the eSports era. This year, 2012, TeSL has marked its 5th year. More and more whizzes joined eSports, and the competitions has become more and more diverse. After learning the lessons of failures for four years since the beginning of the TeSL, Gama Bears finally accumulated enough strength to take over the 5th year Mars Cup of TeSL (StarCraft II) and Professional Super Cup of TeSL(S&K: SF and KR). This issue of G!VOICE, we invited renowned sports anchorman, Chan-Yuan, Hsu to report the challenge that Gama Bears ran into, their secret training, the mastermind of the team and the exciting battle where they knocked out the opponents. 24hr behind the scene real life stories of these eSports contestants and Gama Bears limited edition merchandise were all included in this edition! 2012 Sep. Features Those Years Before the Success Year 2012 marks the 5th year of Taiwan eSports League and a proud year for Gama Bears! They won the highest honor, Professional Super Cup of TeSL for S&K: SF and KR. With the aid from the new joined force, Sen, they also won the champion for SCII and earned the highest honor, Mars Cup of TeSL. 2012 Sep. Features The Mars Cup (for SCII) was a precious win! SF joined force with KR and took the Professional Super Cup of TeSL in the 5th year. 2012 Sep. Features Before winning these two champions in the 5 th year, Gama Bears has had its rough time in the past. From putting all the hearts and souls into running eSports industry to earning the notable status now and having people discuss it. Gama Bears has been through all! Now let’s relive those precious moments before their success. Stand up Where You Fall Since the first and second year of TeSL, Gama Bears had fallen behind their arch enemy, Wayi Spider. Even though Gama Bears finally took the overall champion in the 3 rd year, the newly added competing item, SCII in the 4 th year set Gama Bears back into maladjustment. They didn’t do well on this new item and the originally advantageous item, S&K also fell back to 3 rd . Their dream of taking the crown two years in a roll was crashed. The 4th year was a heavy blow for Gama Bears. Gama Bears’s arch enemy, Wayi Spider. (Source of picture: TeSL)) 2012 Sep. Features This year, the 5th year, Gama Bears didn’t win the championship in the first and second season but they didn’t give up. In the runner up vs. third place round, they defeated Thermaltake Apollos and gained the chance to the grand final. The beat Wayi Spider in the final and successfully turned the tables! In the SCII item, under the guide and effort of Sen, last year’s talent pick, Gama Bears came to the first in the second half season and subsequently defeated Wayi Spider in the grand final. In the S&K item, the couch and contestants spent a lot of time researching on the profiles of both our team and the enemy’s. Finally they decided to proceed with some brave yet creative attempts, for example, placing team leader, Sakugetsui in the role of back-up support. Perhaps these changes caused Gama Bears to lose points in the quarter final, however the final result proved that it was the right move. The grand final’s 4:0 victory was the best proof! (Starting from the left in the back) Gow, Slam, Leaf and Apro showed their support for Sen (at the front). Since Sen joined Gama Bears, he has led SCII team toward the champion. 2012 Sep. Features eSports Development: Discouraging Past Gama Bears’s manager, Alan Chang mentioned that since the first year of eSports, the competition could only be held in the internet café with a few audiences there. Now, eSports competition has its live show, Alan thinks that it is the result of the strong conviction. From no stage to today’s glory, eSports shows its promising future. Having been through the discouraging past, now looking back to the tough time, it was actually a bit sentimental. We know in addition to facing the challenging big environment, Gama Bears also has to constantly seek improvement and growth. The accumulated scale and strength would be the real harvest. At the meantime, we hope to secure bigger supporting audience and more sponsors. These are the goals for Gama Bears to remain its fierce momentum and the feedbacks they hope for the most from the society. Winning double champions in the 5 th year of TeSL, Gama Bears won’t be complacent because the road ahead is long one! 2012 Sep. Features Leaping Over the Obstacle in Mind: Challenge the Impossible E-sports is a fairly new sports with limited support and popularity and therefore as young eSports contestants in Taiwan (average age from 16-22), they need to put in a lot of efforts to hack a path amidst adverse environment. They are the pioneers for opening the path for others who might follow suit in the future, and right now, members of Gama Bearss are at that stage. The cruel winning and losing reality of eSPorts, frictions among peers, the opposition from the families, these young contestants faced frustration and failures earlier than most. 2012 Sep. Features To give them courage and encouragement to pursue their dreams, to help them overcome difficult predicament and make breakthrough team work, Gamania arranged a special training for Gama Bears in 2010 and 2011 respectively. G!VOICE now takes you back to the past and tells you all about the behind the scene stories of Gama Bears’s exclusive secret trainings! Secret Training Part 1 Longtan Township, Taoyuan County, March 30-31, 2010 To reinforce the resolution for the team to win the championship, GHQ-CSO,William Chen and the manager of Gama Bears, Alan Chang led the team to Longtan township, Taoyuan County in Taiwan to proceed with a series of strengthening trainings focusing on ‘team spirit’ and ‘immunity against frustration’. 2012 Sep. Features The 1st day of the two day training focused on the establishment of team consciousness. Through the relationship between leading and being led, the members rethought their roles in the team. The 2 nd day was the selfchallenge. Members learned to trust themselves during crucial times and pushed their potentials to make a breakthrough! This is important especially when they face tremendous pressure in the final round of the competition. They learned to demonstrate strength while remaining cool, calm, collected and relied on team spirit to turn any adverse situation around! Day 1 Establish team spirit: Everybody Plays an Important Role The training included many small sections, such as how to place two nails on top of one erected nail without any external force? The course enabled members to think outside of the box and to learn to communicate with each other and integrate opinions. Walking on the thin rope: each person had to take turn walking on the rope until they reach destination. 2012 Sep. Features Walking on th e thin rope: when yo u cannot grab th e rope in front of you, you need to re ly on teammates’ he lp to complete the task. st Last task of 1 day: hape V-s there are two the on es extended rop le op pe two ground with es. rop the standing on They would start from the tip of the V and see how far they could go on. The person in the t middle was to protec . ing fall m fro them As the distance between these tw o ropes widened, the difficulty level increased. Now they need an ex tra person to stand in the middle for protection. 2012 Sep. Features Day 2 Believe in Yourself and Your Teammate: There’s Nothing You Can’t Overcome The task on the 1st day was less daunting comparing to the one on the 2nd day! It was matter of life and death so everyone was listening carefully to the coach on safety measure. Giant Stairs: this task required three people to work together, climbing from the bottom all the way to the top. The higher it gets, the wider the wood panel becomes and more difficult it gets. 2012 Sep. Features Big Swing: all members pulled the person to the peak and the person had to unlock the buckle and swung in the air like a pendulum. Gama Bears / SF Yu-Li / Big Swing The person appeared in the video was former SF teammate of Gama Bears, Yu-Li, who has now withdrawn from the team. 2012 Sep. Features Everyone needed to work together to help all members climb through the 4m high all. After some strategic discussion, all members climbed over the wall successfully! The Scariest Challenge: Climbing towards 18 meters (6 floor high) high pole. The participant must climb on the 18m pole on his/her own. The pole has a slight 5 degree tilt which increases the fear of the participant as he/she climbs up. Once he/she makes it to the top, he/she has to stand up on top of the pole. 2012 Sep. Features Do you see the hand le there? the challenge was to jump forward and grab the handle with your own hands. Init ially only 4 out of 14 peop le were willing to take this challenge. After round s of mutual encourage ment and communication , everyone made it thr ough this difficult challeng e! rt: as the Circle of Hea to an end, training came on to a everyone held ted ec rope that conn bers em M all members. lt fe s of Gama Bear strength the immense and the of team work very ambiance was touching. After the two day special training, the participants learne d mutual support and respect. They were closer to each other and learned how to solve the problem togeth er. Do you see how the ir eyes are different no w in the picture? 2012 Sep. Features Secret Training Part 2 Caoling Historic Trail (NE Taiwan) and LongMen Kayaking Base, February 28-March 1st , 2011 After the special training in Taoyuan in 2010, Gama Bears took the championship of the 3 rd year TeSL. In 2011, many new talents joined Gama Bears so in order for these newbies to get on with the group swiftly and reinforce the team spirit, another two day special training was initiated. This time the training focused on ‘team work’ and ‘willpower’. The two day special training was named, ‘Up to the Mountain, Down to the Sea’: the 1st day was the mountain part—the Caoling historic trail, and the 2 nd day was the sea part—duo kayaking. A year of eSports competition is very long and setbacks are expected. However, how to thrive from failures and get through the rest of the season with strong willpower and take back the points with team efforts is the crucial key to the final victory! This training was set to inspire the members to boost their team spirit and willpower! Day 1 Hang in there with strong will, the joy will be yours after reaching the summit! The goal for the first day challenge was easy: the whole team must stand on the summit of Caoling historic trail. Before they set off, the coach reminded everyone of safety measure and task allocation. 2012 Sep. Features The entrance of Caoling historic train: the beginning of hell… Stairs came one after another. The blazing sun made everyone sweat like pigs. 2012 Sep. Features Reaching the rest point, members lay down on the floor but no one quit the task. Someone sprained the ankle, teammate was massaging it to relieve the pain. 2012 Sep. Features The number of stairs and total distance was daunting, but under the persistence of willpower, no one gave up. And the result? Beautiful scenery along the way to the top. Finally everyone made it to the top, all the efforts and pain were paid off with indescribable joy! 2012 Sep. Features Day 2 Improve Effective Communication, Unite Group Strength With the sore muscles from the 1st day still in full effect, the 2 nd day challenge kicked off immediately: duo kayaking. Before they get to the water, they need to learn the skills and terms of oars. The skills for duo kayaking lie in the collaboration and coordination between the two. The teammate at the front needs to pay attention to the direction of the water and of the kayak and report the situation whereas the teammate at the back needs to provide necessary momentum and adjust movement according to such information. 2012 Sep. Features If they don’t collaborate well, the kayak will overturn and they will fall into the water. Final challenge: 8 kayaks lined up, the rear teammates had to stand up. Standing up on the kayak is not an easy task. The wobbling kayak could easily make one fall into the water. They must rely on each other to complete the task smoothly. 2012 Sep. Features In the end, all members succeeded the standing challenge, it was a moving moment! All team members completed the two day trainings and strengthened their team spirit and willpower. Go, go go, Gama Bears! 2012 Sep. Features The heroes behind Gama Bears: (from the left) coach 4 Leaf, coach Ryuzaki, manager Alan Chang and coach Momo. The Men Behind Gama Bears Players shine on the stage, receiving applause and support from their fans. After winning the champion, the players almost always mention their appreciation for the coaches or the team leaders, however these are usually the ones that are ignored. These people, working staff, team leaders and coaches almost never made it to the front page but do you know how influential their existence are to the team, and how indispensable they are? G!VOICE will show you these unknown heroes work behind the scene! 2012 Sep. Features Organization Chart of Gama Bears Team Leader │ Alan Chang Role Parent, Father, Boss. Job Description Setting up assessment criteria for players. Helping players go through emotional distress. Deciding the formation of the team. Conducting player marketing and promotion. Expanding team’s popularity and maintaining reputation. Coaches │ Momo Coaches │ Ryuzaki Role Player-sitting, Big brother, Mentor Job Description Monitoring player’s current status. Drafting game plan. Managing players’ daily routines. Control the tempo of the game. Assist players in solving technical problems. Coaches │ 4 Leaf 2012 Sep. Features The Team’s Fuel and Engine — the Coaches KR coach: Momo SF coach: Ryuzaki Currently Gama Bears is said to be the only team in the league that has three professional eSports coaches for three different games. Coaches Momo, Ryuzaki and 4 Leaf generously shared their feedbacks and thoughts on leading the teams during the interviews with G!VOICE. Even though the coaches may not match the technical level of the current players, they play instrumental roles in psychological counseling and managing the tempo of the game. Management Style: Adopting the Same Routines As Team Members Each coach has different leading style, for example SF members are relatively younger, coach Ryuzaki placed focus on life disciplines, including asking everyone to gather and dismiss at the same time etc. He cultivates team spirit from the most basic daily routines. Now the team members don’t even need the coach to monitor them because everyone is used to eating together, going on breaks together and SCII coach: 4 Leaf 2012 Sep. Features returning to the dorm after work together. This kind of intimacy and connection could eventually reflect on the live games and this year’s champion is the best proof of that. The players in SF have already got used to team life, they do everything together as a team. Adjusting Players and Maneuver is not an Easy Thing In addition, the coaches need to spend more time and effort on players’ adjustment and maneuver, take KR for example, after rising star, Owen joined the team, the coach faced the dilemma: Which three out of the four should they select for the battle? After months of observation and attempts, coach Momo finally made a bold arrangement: making team leader Sakugetsu the backup player! It was not an easy thing to sit this three time MVP player in the corner. It was a difficult decision too considering Sakugetsu has many fans and the coach was under a lot of pressure. Communication with the players is another potential problem. Momo ‘s choice made Sakugetsu the commander of the battle field. Instead of personally attending the battle, he waited in the back to give his teammates feedbacks and strategies, thoroughly wielding his power and value as a senior player. Finally under the 2012 Sep. Features help of the coach and Sakugetsu, Owen also successfully integrated with the team and entered into the championship, which was a unfulfilled goal last year. Handling Various Situations in the Game as Players The most unique coach of all is said to be coach 4 Leaf of SCII. He is a veteran and renowned Star Craft player in Taiwan and a good friend of the Worm King, Sen. This special experience enables him to handle all kind of contingencies happening during the game from the player’s perspective. He is also able to provide players with the planning and experience from his personal experience of attending international games. Initially, before joining the coach team of Gama Bears, 4 Leaf decided to give up his qualification for studying in the graduate school in Japan. He returned to Taiwan for the team and is now witnessing the eSports miracle with his eyes and hands. Calm Navigator: Team Leader The players success and failure may be connected with the coaches, but the whole team’s success and failure lies in the hands of team leader. Gama Bear’s team leader is like every member’s father and mother. He is always thinking how to push this team forward, how to get through the rock bottle and how to make eSports shine in Taiwan, even in the world. He is the leader of Gama Bears team, Alan Chang. Team leader of Gama Bear, Alan Chang. 2012 Sep. Features Be Part of the Team and Contribute Accordingly When asked about the players in the team, Alan was quite satisfied and pleased with these young players. Generally speaking, the players in Gama Bears have high honor and are very competitive, although sometimes they may even lose their direction for it. As a leader, his job is to help them build up a healthy psychology and give support and help to these players. In the 5th year of TeSL, Gama Bears lost the title of seasonal championship but under the encouragement of Alan and emotional readjustment, everyone managed to earn the ticket to the grand final. And eventually and most importantly, they won the title of grand champion. When Gama Bears first teamed up, Albert (upper roll, 4 th from the left) had a group picture with all the players. Alan (upper roll, 4 th from the right) has been looking after Gama Bears, watching it grow stronger. For Alan, the core thinking for these players lies in their abilities to discover the strength of the team. When a player feels that he is part of the team and contributes, the team would feedback accordingly. In doing so, the team will grow stronger and maintain a survival attitude where they treat each game as their last game and fight for the victory. Alan gave these young players another important belief: it is when everyone recognizes his own role and own worth can Gama Bears prosper. 2012 Sep. Features In each game, Alan (2 nd from the right) always stands on the side and cares for the players. Expanding Cross-Strait Market Summon New Energy for eSports When asked about the future of eSports, Alan was very confident about its prosperous future. However, he also mentioned that the current task is to actively expand crossstrait market. He believes that if Taiwan could collaborate with China, we would become a fierce force to be reckoned with in the world. Taiwan’s advantage in soft culture is not to be overlooked. This is the overall trend in the eSports field. Many Taiwanese companies have sponsored overseas eSports games or teams. Through exploring cross-strait market, it is important that we could attract these outflow funds. As for the future of Gama Bears, Alan sincerely hopes that Gama Bears could increase international popularity and work with the company more effectively so we could create more revenue and obtain the honor and glory that Gama Bears as well as the eSports deserve. In the future, we will be working with China and found a new era for eSports! 2012 Sep. Features Man of the men—SJ (left) feared no defeat or challenge, bringing up 200% effort to keep going forward. He is the ‘ultimate’ man in many fans’ hearts. Bashing the Opponents: A Perfect Battle & Performance After the dismal failure in 4th year of TeSL, Gama Bears did not give up any hope but continued to fight. Players went through special trainings and coaches and team leaders studied and drilled various strategies. All of this effort was invested in the hopes of winning the championship! The blessing moment finally came in the 5th year of TeSL, all the hard work paid off. This year, players of Gama Bears fought many brilliant battles. Let G!VOICE take you through some of the highlights from these unforgettable performances. 2012 Sep. Features Biggest Overturn in the History SF Team’s Battle of Miracle Special Force (SF) is a 1st person shooter game. During the game, there are a lot of shooting and fire-cross scenes which means, the side with better aim would have higher chances of winning. Points are calculated based on rounds. Currently the rules in the league is 13 rounds, the winner needs to take down the 7 rounds. The team that falls behind during the game must face tremendous pressure both in terms of skills and psychology. When something like 5:0 or 6:0 appears, it would be very difficult to reverse the adverse situation. However, Gama Bears successfully completed the ‘impossible overturn’ and applied this precious experience in the final round. Coach Ryuzaki of SF team said, “We once experienced the ‘biggest overturn in the history’ during our regular games, little did we know the same thing happened again in our grand final. We were 0:5 losing to the other team but no one gave up even in such disadvantageous situation. We chased it one point at a time and finally completed this daunting task of turning the tables.” Gama Bears already took down three rounds in the annual grand championship, which has a system of first 4 wins in the 7 battles, and therefore even if they had lost that battle, it was not very detrimental to their chances of winning the champion. However, these players displayed the attitude of never easily compromise or give up hope. Players need to overcome various stress during the game. (Source of picture:TeSL) 2012 Sep. Features SF S&K Round 4 of Annual TeSL Grand Championship 2011- 2012 (1st half) SF S&K Round 4 of Annual TeSL Grand Championship 2011- 2012 ( 2nd half) The Undefeated Kingship SCII Grand Final Battle Sen was originally a player of SCI, he gradually lost the stage due to the decrease of available games. After the launch of SCII, he decided to focus entirely on this new game and 2012 Sep. Features developed a new stage for himself, going from amateur player to professional player. Last year, Sen was a member of Fnatic overseas. There were many reasons for his decision to come back to Taiwan but mainly he hoped that his family could get to see him play on TV and that he wished to support the eSports industry in Taiwan. Sen defeated all the players of SCII from Taiwan and represented Taiwan to battle in the World Cyber Games (WCG) 2011. He won the 3 rd place in WCG.(Source of picture:http://game.techbang.com/posts/10742) This year’s grand final of SCII, a 5 wins in 9 battles was adopted. However a single player could only attend as many as three times. Even if the Worm King of Taiwan, Sen could take down 3 victories, the other teammates would have to take down two wins to get the grand champion. On the other hand, if Sen loses any game, the rest of the team needs to take down three wins in 6 games to win. Facing such strong opponent such as Wayi Spider, it’s never an easy win. The most crucial battle took place on the 4th battle. Gama Bears was 2:1 at the time, in order to push the advantage, Sen was sent to battle with the Lin. The game was supposed to be a no-brainer but it turned out to be a tough fight. Gama Bears almost lost this crucial battle. 2012 Sep. Features SCII Spider-Lin vs. Sen (Gama Bears) Annual TeSL Grand Championship 2011- 2012 Sen said, “To be honest, under normal circumstance, the round where I had to battle with Lin, I would’ve lost. However, most Taiwanese players would have confidence issue when they face me as an opponent. Lin lost his pace and calmness at that round which gave me the chance to the turned the tables.”Sen was being modest by saying that but we know that it was because his experience and mentality as a world class player that he retained the victory for Gama Bears. World class player, Sen hopes to taken down the world champion for himself and Taiwan. 2012 Sep. Features Sustainability is the Foundation for Success Like many other professional sports, eSports players also need to face the issue of professional career expectancy. For a developing industry such as eSports, once the players are forced to leave the online stage (voluntarily or otherwise), they have to face predicament of having nowhere else to go. Professional basketball or baseball players could switch to other related works such as team managers or coaches. In addition, the salary they earned during their professional player period could probably cover their livelihood. For eSports player, this however seems very far-fetched. During the interviews conducted by G!VOICE, almost all the coaches and players expressed their recognition for Gamania, saying that the company takes good care of their career change and further academic pursuit. Former professional player, King Kong is working as a game test personnel in the company. Sakugetsu successfully applied for graduate school this year and will be the first eSports player in Taiwan that possesses a master’s degree. Other transitional plans that help develop players to coaches etc so that players and coaches could be at ease once they retire. All of this shows that Gamania does not seek short-term result but rooting for foundation and cultivating the team. In the long run, this kind of managing method is the only way for sustainable growth. Support and encouragement from the fans is the biggest momentum for Gama Bears to go forward! 2012 Sep. Features eSports in the Eyes of Renowned Sports Anchorman: Chan-Yuan, Hsu Chan-Yuan, Hsu is a well-known baseball anchorman in Taiwan. He is one of the very few that could withstand time and remain popular to this day. If you have watched professional or international baseball broadcast, you should’ve seen him or heard him on TV. Since the 3 rd year of TeSL, Videoland Television Network has been broadcasting seasonal games and grand championships live. This special anchorman was given another identity — professional eSports anchorman. 2012 Sep. Features We feel very honored to have this opportunity to interview Hsu for this series of feature report in G!VOICE. His passion for eSports broadcasting, prospect for relevant industry and his caring attitude towards eSports contestants truly earn him the charm and bearings of a veteran media person! eSports Competition: from Pre-recording to Live Broadcasting—the Instant Thrill On the 2nd year of TeSL, the seasonal game was pre-recorded by ESPN and broadcasted on a designated date. However, TeSL wished to follow other professional sports’ suit in broadcasting the competition live to convey the instant thrill and excitement to the audience. They wanted to find a wellknown anchorman to boost the promotional campaign and they found, the baseball broadcast veteran, Chan-Yaun, Hsu for the job. Hsu(right) studied the games and his broadcasting style before broadcasting the professional or international baseball game live. Hsu Spent 2-3 Hours to Collect Information Before Each Live Broadcasting Broadcasting games were something Hsu never tried before, however he also plays games so it was not too challenging for him. When he first started, he had to do a lot of preparation work to familiarize himself with technical terms or the content of the games. Slowly but surely as he accumulated more 2012 Sep. Features knowledge about the games then he shifted his focus on data and records. Currently the TeSL doesn’t have a specialized team to document the record so he often spends 2-3 hours organizing past game results and contestants’ special records. He hopes that he could share these information with the audiences. Hsu is a die-hard fan of Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū (a.k.a Power Pro). It is a series of baseball game developed by Japanese game company, KONAMI. The disproportional and comical characters are its most notable features and are adored by many baseball fans. (Source of picture:http://www.inside-games.jp) When Parents and Teachers Also Cheer For the Contestants, then eSports is Considered a Success E-Sports is a relatively new industry. Hsu thinks that traditionally, parents would think children who play computer games are prone to bad behaviors. Computer games were generally perceived negatively. However, ever since eSports events been broadcasted on TV, many parents turned around and started supporting their own children who adopted eSports as their lifelong goal. Throughout the interviews and broadcasting, Hsu observed that these parents actually support their childrens’ dreams, even though eSports is not a ‘career’ one can continue for life. Hsu once mentioned during the broadcasting, “If one day the teachers of these contestants at school could come to 2012 Sep. Features the competition venue to cheer for them, then that’s the day eSports succeed.” He added that, “This industry will grow stronger as the prevalence of internet spread. Korea is a country we could learn from. Their eSports players are even given military waiver or substitute. If only our government could place more focus on eSports industry or arts and relevant cultural industries. ” The 5th year of TeSL chamipion ship, many Gama Bearss’ parents came to the venue to cheer for their children! Gamania Takes Good Care of Contestants: Creating a Stress-Free Future When asked about Gama Bears, Hsu thinks that Gama Bears is well-organized and mature team, with comprehensive measures covering contestant benefit, the system or future career change advice. In addition, they spend a lot of resources on trainings too. Their coach system is the most professional compared with other teams. Take for example, Sakugetsui successfully applied for graduate school with the help from the company. Now he not only has a academic credit but could also become a professional coach in the future. Overall, Gamania has spent considerable time and resources in taking care of these players, instead of treating them as disposable talents. 2012 Sep. Features Please Encourage Our eSports Players Sakugetsui didn’t participate the competition this year because he was preparing for graduate school but he still made it to the venue to cheer for his teammates. His heart was with everybody! Finally, Hsu asked the audiences to give them more encouragement in supporting these players. Sometimes certain ‘critical’ comments were harsh, even though they may be constructive. Players value these comments a lot, especially if they lose the game. Irrational and emotional criticism is very discouraging to these players. They really need everyone’s encouragement and support. In addition, Hsu hope s that the players could cherish what they have at the moment. The friendly and accepting environment wasn’t created in a day, and will need everyone to work hard to maintain. Replace blame with encouragement, let’s cheer up for our eSports players! Hsu often exuberates the bearing of a professional anchorman, but when we talked to him in person, we found out that his passion for game and baseball is just avid as any other fans. When he talks about stuff that he likes, he couldn’t help but show his enthusiasm. Perhaps his love for the work is what keeps him going to this day and still remains popular by the audience! 2012 Sep. Features Gama Bears Team Life Exclusive We saw eSports contestants’ game faces on TV, we saw them discuss and try to win the game, but do you know what they’re really like off the screen? G!VOICE gained access to the Gama Bears’ private life. We will show you how these three teams were made up. Are you curious? Let’s read on! 2012 Sep. Features 24hr Exclusive Spot Checks on eSports Players 9:00 - 10:00 Getting up and Going to the Office Players of Gama Bears currently live in the dormitory situated at a clean and quiet community not far from the company. G!VOICE conducted a random spot check on the players room, but surprisingly found out that their rooms were exceptionally clean. Moreover, the coaches’ rooms were too good to be true! 2012 Sep. Features 10:00 - 11:00 A Day’s Plan Starts in the Early Morning Morning Roll Call For eSports players, a regular daily routine is very important. This is how they stay sharp reflex and clear judgement and therefore the members of Gama Bears have to be in the company by 10am. If they fail to make it during the roll call, well, they’re on their own… PE Class that Train the Bodies The players not only need to have healthy psychological state but good physical strength. Another important part of Gama Bears’ life is PE class! Every Tuesday and Thursday morning is the particpants’ physical training time, including from aerobic stamina training to muscular training. For these players who sit on the chairs all day, appropriate training time is necessary! 2012 Sep. Features 2012 Sep. Features 11:00 - 12:00 Warm Up Practice From the moment they enter the company till noon, there are usually two hours time. As trivial as this time slot may seem, players of any of these games need to use this time to conduct simple personal training. For example, SCII’s players will challenge other advanced players online. This is usually the time when the overseas players are actively online and therefore it is easier to find them. 2012 Sep. Features 12:00 - 13:00 Lunch Break! Nothing is more important than having your stomach filled . Everyone knows Gamania has a fantastic staff restaurant— gama island! Players who want to squeeze more time to practice may occasionally have lunch at gama island. In addition, it also provides desserts and afternoon tea etc. 13:00 - 15:00 Cultivate Team Spirit—Team Training After the simple warm up in the morning, everyone gets into the mode. The focus in the afternoon is the team raining. Different game has different characteristics, so they have different training methods. KR focuses on the training of ‘chasing’ and ‘team’s tacit understanding’. SF emphasizes on 2012 Sep. Features spot maneuver simulation. SCII carries on the ‘battle net stairs practice’ from the morning. This is primarily because SCII’s battle mode is 1 on 1. However, they would also share their experiences during the break time or watch team mates fight in the battle and discuss afterwards. 2012 Sep. Features 15:00 - 17:00 Spirit is Still up, Let the Fight Begin: Real Battle Maneuver After the morning practice, the players have invigorated their brain cells. Now it’s the prime time for their fight energy. The real battle training takes place during this time. Each team will be paired up with other professional or amateur teams to practice, with the help of the coaches or assistants. Columns In the past, Gamania had participated GDC as an attendee, this year however, we were honored to present ourselves as keynote speakers, with Michelle from Gamania UI Design center, UX designer, Ting Ting and UI Engineer, Shawn. They shared their views of how to infuse user-centered concept into game designs. User-Centered Approach : Expanding New Horizon for Games In the beginning of the meeting, Michelle pointed out that the user-centered design is to, “provide a solution of interactive interface design for users of new generation and therefore they infused user-centered design into Gamania products.” Even though the concept of ‘user-centered design’ has been developing in software industry for many years, for game industry it is still in initial stage. This concept is relatively new 2012 Sep. Columns and unknown in Taiwanese game industry and Gamania was the first to employ this concept into their products (including services and interface etc). Gamania emphasizes on the enhancement of ‘total experience’ so the players could enjoy good service quality and wonderful game experience. Michelle also shared with the game developers in the forum how to establish a comprehensive user experience design team, Gamania UX Design Center and UX Lab. She explained how Gamania employed both science and humanity to analyze user behaviors, added with the design and review by professional UX personnel, Gamania was able to provide a solution in enhancing user experience of game design. The second half session, Ting Ting and Shawn used the interface design for Core Blaze to illustrate how to use Paper Prototyping to test, listen and observe players’ operation experience and to find out issues in original design. This could help them propose new design that fits players’ operation process. They also shared relevant practical experiences in the follow-up of user test. Such experience sharing not only provides game developers a channel for improvement in which they could get to know the users deeper but let the non-game developers (scholars, supervisors, designers, researchers etc) understand the obvious benefit of adopting user test in game design. 2012 Sep. Columns Gamania also made its debut presentation of the video, Gamania- UX Lab in front of these international game developers so that people got to know the user-centered research environment and our investment in design energy. UX Lab 介紹影片 Fervent Feedback and Attention from Game Industry This forum was very well received among the audience, people queuing to ask questions regarding the subject. The final Q&A session even exceeded the presentation time by an hour! We saw that many attendees actually paid much attention to this issue or they have begun to introduce the user-centered concept to their core product development. This sharing session was not only an exceptional demonstration for the Taiwan game industry but earned us many positive feedbacks and recognitions. We hope that we may have chance to collaborate in the future. 2012 Sep. Columns The End This year’s GDC Taipei Summit, Gamania successfully delivered the pioneer user-centered design concept to colleagues from other countries. We also hope that all game developers could realize that in addition to good story boards, high quality visual effects, they also need to have insights on players’ demands and provide a wonderful ‘total user experience’ so that they could create products that players couldn’t keep their hands off of. Marketing Columns Car vs. Piano: A creative and Interesting Marketing Gig What’s the relationship between a car and a piano? When you see a scene like this, “on top of a still car is a 350 kg, real piano hanging by 9 ropes”, what is your first reaction? Danger! Unexpected! It could crash and kill the person in the car! That’s right, this marketing case wants to give you the message that “you cannot secure yourself against all risks and dangers, so it’s best to insure”. The interesting thing is that, when will these 9 hanging ‘ropes’ break, and what breaks them will be determine by online users. Through live stream on the internet, they let you witness the scene when the car is being crashed by the piano. 2012 Sep. Columns Intouch is a Russian Insurance company specializes in car insurance. To promote their ‘external factors insurance’, they launched a campaign, “Car vs. Piano”. Most of their insurance are sold either online or phone calls. To differentiate themselves from other competitors, Intouch placed all their marketing force on digital media, communicating with consumers primarily through social media. They did an in-depth survey on consumers and found out that there were two major problems in selling external factors insurance: 1. The premium is higher than others and 2. Experienced drivers feel that if they are careful enough, others will be the cause of the possible accident. They feel that only a fool will buy collision (loss) damage waiver (CDW). The new Intouch external factors insurance improved these defects. It not only targets experienced drivers but the premium is only half of the traditional CDW. In order to let the online users feel the ambiance that ‘Accident is beyond your control’, in their campaign webpage (carvspiano.ru), there were three cameras aiming at this car and a big screen that showed the updates of live Tweets. The The website showed the instant Tweets that could decide the fate of the car. 2012 Sep. Columns page provided 24 hours live stream. A random person’s Tweet could determine the fate of this car. Every day they would randomly chose two Tweets, the Tweets would be compared against situations that happen in reality. If they did happen, then a rope would be cut. This would go on until the ropes cannot hold the weight of the piano anymore and crash the car. How exciting was that? For example, if the weather exceeds 33 degrees Celsius tomorrow, then the rope is cut. If not, then the rope stays. If the Blue Party wins the election tomorrow, then the rope is cut. If no one wins the lottery tomorrow, then the rope is cut. If Jeremy Lin wins the game then the rope is cut etc. The Tweet was compared against the reality: cut! Online users could also use Twitter to vote for the next critical Tweet that decides the fate. Two results were revealed everyday and they published the chosen Tweets. The next day when the time came, they would compare the Tweets against reality to decide whether to cut or keep the rope. Everything was done in public’s eyes. People could choose to vote for the fateful Tweet: Head or Tail? 2012 Sep. Columns As you could imagine, the campaign received more and more attention towards the end. Only the 3 rd day after the launch of the campaign, #carvspiano became the top 2 keywords on Twitter in Russia. Intouch Car vs Piano Car vs. Piano successfully used social media, Twitter to draw in consumer participation which makes the spreading of the message very easy. The 24 hours live feed also extended the influence of the campaign for it satisfied the curious and blood-thirsty nature of modern net users. In addition, the design of the event was well-connected with the product. They did not ignore the message the brand was trying to convey for the sake of appeasing consumers. Consumers were made aware of the fact that “Unforeseeable external factors could cause accidents” and in the meantime, Intouch created a good impression for its brand. Columns Advertising ALSOK Commercial Song ALSOK is a company that provides various security and insurance services. Since early last year, they hired the well known Japanese figure, Saori Yoshida, a female wrestler who won World Championship of Women’s Wrestling for 10 consecutive years (as well as winning two consecutive Olympic Gold Medals), ALSOK became a product that imprints in everyone’s mind, a household name. The commercial adopted the form of a song and signal that average consumers are familiar with. They looked for the perfect endorsement person with ‘security guarantee’ as product feature. The commercial was made into a music video to ‘brainwash’ the consumers. 2012 Sep. Columns ALSOK Song of 2011 I have only seen their commercial song of 2011 and 2012 (1, 2, 3, 4, ALSOK) once, but I could sing along with the commercial even as a foreigner who doesn’t speak Japanese. Does that mean my Japanese has improved? Of course not, the matter of the fact is, ‘brainwashing’ transcends borders. It has nothing to do with the language, if you have the right tune and scenes, you can easily brainwash people even if language barrier exists! ALSOK Song of 2012 Looking at the commercial, the agile Saori Yoshida was the metaphor for the warrior that protects people’s safety. The feature of the product was embodied by the song which is a brilliant way for consumers to remember the features of the product! 2012 Sep. Columns In the ALSOK song of 2011, the tone, manner, special effect and the deliberately recreated Kamen Rider series, all carry a kind of retro-fun element. Through the visual effect of ‘Kamen Rider’ to strengthen the ‘protection’ and ‘security’ image of the brand. In this year’s 1,2,3,4 ALSOK Song (2012), the ‘warrior’ came out from the much worshiped role, and blended in with the residents. Singing along with renowned Japanese sights and mascots, when Saori Yoshida and Kaori Icho talked to the camera, I had no doubt about the product and believed 100% the sincerity of these two spokespersons. ALSOK Song of 2012, Behind the Scene In addition, there was another video about the behind the scene of ALSOK 2012 commercial which we could learn about the masterful skills of image synthesis. Synthesis challenges the legitimacy of ‘lighting’ and ‘view angle’. Watching this behind the scene video, you’d realize that almost all the commercial settings were synthesized, especially the dancing scene in the tatami room. If you didn’t watch this behind the scene video, you would’ve thought that they recreated the scene in the studio, but in fact, it was synthesized by green screen. In the commercial, the ‘view angle’ of the camera is 2012 Sep. Columns almost still, which means there was not zoom in and out, no dolly in and out, and no panning. The purpose of this actually helps to legitimize the view angle and lowers the production cost. They didn’t even have to install expensive equipment such as motion control (capture). They covered the ‘view angle’, and in terms of the ‘lighting’, you could see that in the video they made the color of the light ‘flat’ and lowered the color scale so it lacked in level but still created contrasts which made up for visual rationality. They did a bang up job on synthesis, redirecting people’s attention on the dance and their ears on the song, which makes this an effective, brainwashing commercial. Recommend BOOK A Good Story Recommended Wholeheartedly by Hayao Miyazaki Kamusari Nānā Nichijō G!VIOCE Recommend Introduciton “’Nānā’ is the common language in Kamusari village, which means slowing things down. It is a village isolated from the world and the villagers live a sustainable living with the Nature. The main character is an urban youngster who does not have any direction or goal for the future. After he arrived in the village, he learned to cherish the forest and the importance of respecting nature. He learned that life is like climbing trees, you can only look upwards, not downwards. He gradually found his way living in the woods. This is a book that makes you relax and slow things down. A great book that could rejoin you with the Nature, highly recommended.“ Hirano just wants to do trivial works here and there to spend the rest of his life. After the graduation day, under his mother and his teacher’s arrangement, he was sent to Kamusari village in the deep mountain and began a lumbering life that he did not even think of living. He lived with the honest and simple villagers and began to get used to their Nānā accent and attitude towards life. He worked side by side with a bunch of strong tall men in the woods. Being a lumberjack was tough, but he had morphed from the ‘what the heck is this lumbering gig” attitude and thinking about how to get out of this remote village (where there was only one connecting 2012 Sep. Recommend train per day) to accepting his place and enjoying peace with Nature. Infected by these sincere villagers, he grew to like Kamusari village. And just like that, he finally said his first, “Nānā”. The author, Shion Miura captured the real emotions of the people living in Kamusari village and the life in the woods in precision. She did a lot of research and even went to remote mountains to survey for the setting of the book. Nānā is a dialect designed just for the Kamusari village, there is not such a language in reality. The backdrop was set in Mie-ken in Kansai area, close to Nara-ken border, therefore the Nānā carries the unique soft spoken twang of Kansai accent and also symbolizes the slow and carefree life-pace in the forest. In an exclusive interview, the author said that “this slow-spoken tone matches with the value that has been sustainably cycled in the woods for a hundred years. This is for people who do not have any thoughts or goals for the future, or even people who feel their lives have lost meanings.” About Author Shion Miura is a rising star among young generation of Japanese writers and she is also a constant winners of literary prizes. Her book, Eto Mori won the 135 th Naoki Prize. The author has a very fluent flow in her writing and specializes in shaping sharp characters. In the story, she could always capture the youthfulness of the young which is why she is very popular by young readers. This book has been adapted to a radio show, which broadcasts during Youth Adventure period in NHK. -------- Extract from www.books.com.tw
