The Raleigh Jaycees is an
organization that revolves
around our members and
the projects they run. We
only run two events that are
not put on by project chairs:
the board meeting and the
general
membership
meeting. Even though these
are not officially run by
project chairs, our Business
area runs the projects that
raise the money to make it possible for our
chapter to hold these events. Our project
chairs literally make this organization run.
I encourage you to consider stepping up to run
a project on your own or to serve on the
committee of one of our large projects. We will
provide you with the training and support you
need to run a successful project. We have
incredible opportunities available for projects
and committee positions. If you want to find
out more, talk with our directors and VPs
about opportunities that are available or bring
us your ideas.
Running a project can be one of the most
rewarding experiences this organization offers.
Every event we run is because one of our
members believed strongly enough in an idea
that they brought it to the board and worked
to make it a reality. Each dollar we make and
hour we spend helping our community is due
to their hard work. It is only March and we
have already had more than five first time
project chairs step up to run their first project
and even more brand new project ideas
presented at out first two board meetings.
This is truly amazing and a trend I hope we
will see continue throughout the year.
I would like to sincerely thank our hard
working project chairs and their committees.
Our project chairs and their committees put in
countless hours working to bring you activities
that allow us to bond, grow as a person and
make a difference in the community.

The Jaycall staff apologizes profusely for depriving the
general Jaycall readership of the following article last
month.
Let us just say that we were strategically withholding
this amazing literary masterpiece in order to build up
suspense. Most definitely, this article was not left out
of last month's Jaycall due to any oversight of the
Jaycall staff.
Sorry Carter. And here's the much anticipated article:
Yes, for a second year in a row we are the
Number 1 Jaycee Chapter in North Carolina!
Congratulations to everyone on keeping the
John C. Kiger Trophy here in Raleigh .
The awards were many for Raleigh during
ceremonies held at the 2009 Year End NC
Jaycee Convention, held here in the capital city
the last weekend in January. Starting Friday
night, we received several awards for 2nd
Semester,
including
Helping
Hand
Nominations, numerous 1st and 2nd place CPG
prizes, and were recognized for 3rd Place in
the Chapter Parade of Excellence (POE). To
top it off, Khaner Walker (Director) and Ali
Houchin (Vice President) were named to the
2nd Semester Goody’s Statewide All Star Team.
The Raleigh steamroller continued Saturday as
the community development awards for the
State’s Priority Projects were announced. Our
Chapter nearly swept all the awards that
afternoon.
Awards
included
the
top
contributions (both total and per member) for
all three charities, the Duke Comprehensive
Cancer Center, NC Jaycee Burn Center, and
the Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina.
Saturday night brought the big awards for the
year; and Raleigh did not disappoint, taking
the lion’s share of the honors. Whether it was
project awards, individual honors, or Chapter
recognition, the words “Raleigh Jaycees” were
used frequently.
In addition to the Kiger
Award, our Chapter was recognized for the
most
outstanding
area
of
opportunity
programming in 4 out of 5 categories. We
were also recognized with the Giessenbier
Award for the top chapter in our division.

The majority of the Goody’s Year End
Statewide All Star Team was made up of
Raleigh Jaycees, including: Director Lisa
Joyce; Director Neph Bailey; Treasurer Deidre
Albert; Vice President Melissa Taylor; and
COB Paul Hoover. Individual awards included
Most Outstanding Regional Director for Stacy
Hanna and Jaycee Jeopardy winner Brandon
Joyce. Not to be outdone, Lisa Joyce took
home the Convention First Timer’s Award.
Our members also took top honors in
prestigious individual competition categories.
Chris, Linnell, and Kennedy Compton were
named NC Jaycee Family of the Year and Ed
Blackman was honored with the John H.
Armbruster award for the top veteran Jaycee
in the state.

As you can tell, we truly made the weekend
. I want to congratulate all
the award winners and thank everyone for our
Chapter awards. Whether it was splitting
wood at the Fuel Drive, delivering turkeys to
families at Heritage Park, or working a shift at
a Ways and Means project, you made them
possible. It was truly an honor and a privilege
to accept the Kiger Award on behalf of the
Chapter.
Thank you again for making 2009 a fantastic
year. YOU ROCK!

here’s a quick recap:
Jaywalkers: Join a
group
of
Raleigh
Jaycees at various charity walks throughout
Raleigh and the Triangle. In March, the
Jaywalkers took on the St. Patty’s Run, Green
8k. Afterwards, the group had a post-run beer
at Tir Na Nog along with live music. Join us for
the next event, March For Babies, on April
24th.

February's Polar Bear Plunge
Blood Drive: In February, the Jaycees
donated blood at the Red Cross North Raleigh
Blood Donor Center. While only 5% of eligible
people actually donate, it is estimated that
95% of us will need blood or a blood product
during our lifetime. In our area, more than
1,500 units of blood are needed each day for
patients in local hospitals.
Adopt-A-Highway: The Raleigh Jaycees are
responsible for keeping a two mile stretch of
Wake Forest Road near our office. We had a
great group attend the March cleanup. But
don't worry - you didn't miss out on all of the
fun. Join us on for the next cleanup on
Saturday, June 5th and after we're done, we'll
pick a place to go for a post-cleanup social.
The best part is, we’ve only just begun! Join
Tina Lewis as she gathers coupons for military
families with her Clip-n-Save project, support
local non profits while having a good time with
Peter Ansbacher’s Staying in Series and so

that we can all see
new growth outside
as well as in our
personal and
professional lives.

development and
State Involvement is
working hard to find
new opportunities
for you to grow this spring. We have a lot of
fantastic projects already going this year.
Biggest Loser and Book Worms are off to a
great start! We have a few new projects
starting this month. Liz G. will be running
Know Your Numbers, Andy S. has Project
Geek, Tiffany R. has a Health Fair, and
Sasha F. is doing a family day trip to the NC
Zoo. There are many opportunities for you to
grow this month so make sure you contact the
project chairs and sign up for these fantastic
projects!
Not only can you grow by participating in
these projects, but we are always looking for
new project ideas or project chairs for some of
our other projects! Some of the projects we
would like to run: Leadership Seminar, cultural
event, religious event, volleyball or other
sport, cooking class, home seminar, and the

March Is National Collision
Awareness Month
Dr. Joshua McDowell
Dr. Joshua McDowell, D.C. and the staff of
Premier Chiropractic want you to be prepared
in the event of an automobile accident.
Preventative
measures
and
procedural
education will go a long way in minimizing
your injuries and maximizing your recovery.
First and foremost, wear your seatbelt!!
Second, adjust your headrest height so that the
center of the back of your head is about ½-1
inch below the center of the headrest. Next,
ensure that child safety seats are properly
installed. Children are very flexible and less
likely to be significantly injured in an accident
if properly restrained. Many fire departments
and police stations offer free installation
classes and inspections. Safety seats should
not be used beyond the expiration date on the
manufacturer label or reused after an accident
because the integrity of the plastic and foam
could be compromised.
Drive Defensively.
Try to be aware of the
traffic around you and avoid aggressive
drivers. Switch lanes to get out of their way.
Drive slower in poor conditions such as rain,
snow and fog. Use a hands-free device if you
must make a call while driving and remember
it is against the law in NC to text while driving.
Purchase Medpay with your auto insurance.
Medpay is a contract with your auto insurance
company to cover your medical expenses that
arise from an auto accident. It can be used
whether you or the other driver is at fault.
Medpay is relatively inexpensive and will allow
you to get treatment with no out-of-pocket
expense. Use of Medpay will not increase your
premiums.
If you realize that an accident is imminent,
brace your body for impact. You should place
your hands on the steering wheel at the 9 and
3 o’clock positions and press your body into
the back of your seat with your head against

the headrest. If you secure loose objects—big
or small—before you drive, you can minimize
the injuries resulting from objects thrown
about the vehicle.
If you are in an accident, have the police
complete an accident report including witness
statements. If you are injured, an accident
report will help legitimize your complaints. If
you are able, take pictures of the scene before
vehicles are moved. If you do not have a
camera phone, keep a disposable camera in
the glove box. Call your insurance company as
soon as possible.
Get yourself checked out immediately and do
not sign anything from an insurance company.
Unfortunately, auto accident injuries come in
all shapes and sizes—from the very apparent
to the extremely hidden. With soft tissue
injuries, a trip to the ER may not be necessary,
but a primary care physician or chiropractor
can diagnose your injuries and offer treatment
solutions. Medical doctors may refer you to
physical therapists or orthopedists which
require payment before treatment begins.
Many chiropractors, like Premier Chiropractic,
will treat your injuries while waiting for
payment from an at-fault insurer or Medpay.
Insurance companies for the at-fault driver are
liable to cover care for injuries from the
accident, but there is a small window of time
to have these injuries diagnosed and treated.
The sooner you seek care, the quicker you can
get your life back.

Lions and Tigers and Bears...OH MY!!

SHHHHHHH . . .be vewy vewy quiet. . . we’re
going on a bear hunt. Actually, we’re going to
the zoo. That’s right – on Saturday, March
27th the chapter will be heading to the NC Zoo
in Asheboro for a day of sun, fun, family, and
friends from across the state.
Why would I want to go to the zoo, you ask? In
no particular order (okay who are we
kidding?), here are the top ten reasons to go
on the zoo trip:

TRIP (it’s
really not that
long of a trip –
maybe an hour
each way).
9. You miss
the smell of
animal feces
8. You want to
visit relatives whom you have not seen in . . .
well . .. forever!
7. Because sleeping in on a Saturday is way
over-rated
6. You may get the opportunity to carpool with
folks who have kids and you can count how
many times we get asked “are we there yet?”
(okay now for the serious reasons)
5. You get to spend the day with your Raleigh
Jaycee friends, their friends, and families.
4. Since this is being promoted across the
state, you get the opportunity to meet
members from other chapters, or visit with old
friends you have not seen in a while.
3. The price of your ticket is being subsidized
by the chapter so all it costs for you is $4 for
an entire day of fun (group rates are $9 for

get the “group” discount for being cool and
hanging out with us, but the Raleigh Chapter
is covering $5 towards the cost of admission
for its members). Hey people - membership
has its benefits!! Just think of all the plastic
zoo animals you can make with the $5 you
save!
We will be meeting in the KMART Parking lot
on Western Boulevard around 9 am to
carpool/caravan over to Asheboro. Our friends
from other chapters are welcome to carpool or
meet us there. We do need to pay in one lump
sum and enter the zoo as a group so make sure
you get your money to Sasha Fradin by the
next GMM or make other arrangements with
her. I need to call the zoo with a final count
the week before so please let me know if you
plan on attending. I’ll be collecting money up
til the time we get there but an accurate head
count (including children). Of course, you are
free to meet us there but if you do not enter
with the group, you may not get the group rate.

Farmers Awards Congress- Raleigh, NC

Senators
participated and volunteered
at the USJC administered
National Outstanding Young
Farmers Awards Congress in
Raleigh, NC. The weekend
included tours of John Deere's
Turf Care Manufacturing
Facility, Cotton Incorporated,
and Vick Family Farm. There
were also many luncheons and dinners with
guests including NC Commissioner of Agriculture
Steve Troxler, Comedian Jay Hendren, Orion
Samuelson from WGN Radio in Chicago, Dr.
David Jones from NCSU, USJC President Jeff
Lank, and John Deere's David Thorne, Cheryl and
Gordon Salley. Raleigh Jaycee Stacy Hanna
entertained the crowd by
singing the National Anthem
and God Bless America
during the opening and
closing ceremonies.
Local
Irish band, Ghosts of Erin,

) also performed on Saturday
night.
Ten finalists were interviewed
prior to the selection of the
four national winners. The four winners were:
Richard and Debbie Norz, New Jersey; Brandon
and Monica Schafer, Minnesota; Ryan and Annie
Williams, Texas; Patrick and Sara McGuire,
Michigan. Each received various plaques and
gifts, including monetary grants.
The Outstanding Farmers of America Fraternity is
made up of past nominees of the Outstanding
Young Farmer Program. The fraternity is
designed to facilitate an exchange of ideas and
friendship that encourages excellence and
involvement in agriculture and the local, state,
and national community. There are approximately

1,500 members of the
fraternity
across
the
nation who utilize their
connections with each
other
in
a
strong
networking format to
assist
farmers
and
promote the importance of
America's
farming
community.
The OFA
vision is to be a Positive
Voice in Agriculture by
fostering Strong Relationships by offering the
best opportunities in Education and Networking
and recognizing efforts in Land Stewardships,
Community Involvement and Modern Business

The roots of the NOYF program date back to the
founding of the US Junior
Chamber. In 1920, in his
first speech as National
President, founder Henry
Giessenbier stated that
one of two national
concerns on which the
Junior Chamber should
focus its attention was the
improvement
of
conditions for the farmer
and better urban-rural
relations through an understanding of agricultural
problems. Many years later, in 1951, Jaycee Dale
Spears of Shenandoah, Iowa, put Giessenbier's
challenge into action in designing a program to
honor
Shenandoah's Outstanding Young Farmers. It
was soon conducted as a state-wide program by
the Iowa Junior Chamber and, in 1954, was
adopted by The US Junior Chamber as a national
priority program.
Today's farmer is an entrepreneur in a complex
agribusiness. He or she must understand all
aspects of farming, including computers, farm

implements,
and
other
equipment used in today's
operations. He or she must
also
comprehend
the
complexities of fertilizer and
insecticide to raise the high

worldwide, while not running
afoul
of
environmental
regulations. As the farmer's
business has changed, so has
the involvement in the community. Today's
farmer has become an active citizen, participating
in everything from local and state government to
civic groups and charitable organizations. It is
not only fitting that farmers be honored for their
achievements - it is essential.

The purpose of the National Outstanding Young
Farmer program is to bring about a greater
interest in the farmer, to foster better urban-rural
relations through the understanding of the
farmers' problems, to develop an appreciation of
Jaycee Jaywalkers!

Do you want to get a great workout, help
a charity, and socialize with friends all at
the same time? Then Jaycee Jaywalkers is
for you. Jaywalkers is a series of events
where
jaycees
are
participating
in
community walks and runs. Our first one,
Polar Plunge Torch Run had a great
turnout, was a beautiful day, and everyone
finished!
The next run/walk, the St
Patty’s Day Run Green, took place on
March 7 and was also a lot of fun and a
great success. Our next one will be the
March for Babies, 5K, April 24 and at the
next GMM you’ll hear why that particular

Despite repeated pleas for reports of good news that
Raleigh Jaycees wish to share with others, the Jaycall
editors have yet to hear anything. So, we Googled the
following: Jaycees "good news" -Dugard. The following is
our favorite good news item that we found for another
Jaycee chapter. We hope it cheers you up.
Lombard Jaycees (October 2000)
The good news: Members of the Lombard Jaycees found
out Wednesday they have a building for this year's
haunted house.
The bad news: They have only 14 days to make it happen.
"Right now I feel a cross between elation and panic,"
Jaycee and haunted house Chairman Mike Hughes said...
At this point, we would have had to either pay or give
someone our e-mail address to continue reading, so I
suppose we'll never know what happened to plucky Mike
Hughes and the Lombard Jaycees, but best of luck to
them back in 2000.

Were you born and raised in Raleigh? If not, where are you from?
I was born in Charlotte, NC but I have lived Raleigh for past 12 years.
When did you join the Raleigh Jaycees?
January 2008
What do you like best about the Raleigh
Jaycees?
What I like best about the Raleigh Jaycees is my
ability to stretch myself every day. I am always
being provided opportunities to challenge myself.
Do you have a favorite project or moment
from your time in the Jaycees so far?
My favorite project is the Haunted House. It was
the first project that I really felt like I was a
Raleigh Jaycee and it was the project that
brought to the organization in the first place.
What advice would you give to members who
have just joined?
My advice to new members is: try something
outside your box. It will not only teach you
something about yourself but I have always
gotten closer to other members and made new friends when I was doing
something that was a challenge.
What are you looking forward to during the rest of 2010?
I am looking forward to seeing 2010 be a better year for everyone!
What do you like to do for fun?
I like to hang out with friends, travel, listen to music, read a good book.
How will you be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year?
I not sure but I probably will find some of my pictures from Ireland and day dream
of retiring with the Irish in Ireland!
What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I can change the lyrics to any song to fit a conversation. It comes in handy during
stressful times.

Article 3: The Zeh Way to Save on Children

It has caught our attention with so
many new parents in our chapter; the
Zeh Way needs to focus on helping
them save. This month’s article gives
new ideas to would be and new
parents alike on how to save a little
money. This article is also appropriate
for aunts, uncles, and friends of new
parents.
Child entertainment - toys for children
are overrated. We suggest games like
hide and go seek and kick the can (use
a veggie can, never use a soda can
because they are refundable). If your
child is a newborn, games like peek-aboo and patty cake work well. The
purchasing of Leapfrog and other
expensive toys is strictly prohibited.
There is no guarantee that your child
will become any smarter - the only
guarantee is you will not become any
richer!
Gifts for children – The only suitable
gift for all children are Piggy banks.
Never let young children play with the
Piggy bank. If they swallow a coin you
may be out up to 25 cents, plus the
cost of an emergency room visit. Just
think if they swallow a coin every
weekend what that could do to their
college fund!
Potty training – The purchasing of a
potty chair is very expensive and are
you ever going to use it again once
that child is potty trained? They don’t
exactly make for a very good re-gift
item either. We suggest the use of
bungee cords to hold the child
securely to an adult size toilet seat. In
addition, bungee cords are available in

a wide variety of colors. Therefore,
you can teach your child their colors
while potty training. Unlike the potty
chair, bungee cords can be reused

Pop Tab Wrap-Up

We would like to thank each of you who
collected tabs and placed the Ronald
McDonald houses in your homes, workplaces
and local businesses you frequent. Our goal
was to collect 10 pounds of pop tabs and we
collected over 30 pounds.
We would especially like to thank Ed
Blackman who used his fame as a TV
celebrity to bring in at least 6 or 7 pop tabs.
Despite the fact that the USPS already had
collection
boxes
set
up
for
another
organization, Ed decided to find another way
to help our cause. He took it upon himself to
find a few in the street and pitched in by
ensuring us that he would have collected a
lot if someone else didn’t already put out
houses.
Please keep collecting your tabs as we have
a new project chair.
