Condors rookie defenseman Sean Hurley was once a high school football star, quarterbacking his school to the Vermont State Championship as a junior in 2000. “I didn’t even play football at all until my freshman year of high school,” says Hurley, who grew up in Rutland, approximately a half hour from the New York border, hence the admission to being a Buffalo Bills fan. “I started at tight end, but then after my first season I went off to a few quarterback camps to learn how to play the position – one them was even at Penn State – and figured out how to throw.” “Then when my sophomore season came around I won the job as the starter and learned as I went. But by my junior season I had gotten pretty good and we had built a strong team and it all just came together.” “It was funny too because the day of the Vermont State Football Championship always falls on the first day of deer hunting season, so everyone came to the game in camo and bright orange hunting suits.” But football soon took a back seat for Sean. “My problem was that Rutland was a big football town, but the hockey wasn’t very good, and I knew that I was going to go to college to play hockey. I wasn’t getting noticed at all as a hockey player [ed. note: even after winning Vermont Div. II Hockey Player of the Year the very same school year], so after that season I left the school to move to a good hockey town.” His relocation, with the weight of a potential repeat firmly upon the QB’s shoulders, didn’t resonate well with his football-hungry hometown, but hockey was Sean’s future. He continued to play football at prep school, which required its athletes to play a fall, winter and a spring sport (football/ hockey/golf for Sean), and he eventually earned a free ride to Brown University, an Ivy League school in Providence, RI. Although hockey was his ride at this point, football proved to be a hard sport to get out of his system. “I asked my coach in college if I could keep playing football, just to join the scout team and get beat up in practice all the time, but he wouldn’t let me.
