Condors Football Star Sean Hurley
The Raiderettes are in town tonight, and while you might not think there’s a direct tie-in between
Condors hockey and football, you’d be wrong. Condors rookie defenseman Sean Hurley was
once a high school football star, quarterbacking his school to the Vermont State Championship as a
junior in 2000.
“I didn’t even play football at all until my freshman year of high school,” says Hurley, who grew
up in Rutland, approximately a half hour from the New York border, hence the admission to being
a Buffalo Bills fan. “I started at tight end, but then after my first season I went off to a few quarterback camps to learn how to play the position – one them was even at Penn State – and figured out
how to throw.”
“Then when my sophomore season came around I won the job as the starter and learned as I went.
But by my junior season I had gotten pretty good and we had built a strong team and it all just
came together.”
“It was funny too because the day of the Vermont State Football Championship always falls on the
first day of deer hunting season, so everyone came to the game in camo and bright orange hunting
suits.”
But football soon took a back seat for Sean. “My problem was that Rutland was a big football
town, but the hockey wasn’t very good, and I knew that I was going to go to college to play
hockey. I wasn’t getting noticed at all as a hockey player [ed. note: even after winning Vermont
Div. II Hockey Player of the Year the very same school year], so after that season I left the school
to move to a good hockey town.”
His relocation, with the weight of a potential repeat firmly upon the QB’s shoulders, didn’t resonate well with his football-hungry hometown, but hockey was Sean’s future. He continued to play
football at prep school, which required its athletes to play a fall, winter and a spring sport (football/
hockey/golf for Sean), and he eventually earned a free ride to Brown University, an Ivy League
school in Providence, RI.
Although hockey was his ride at this point, football proved to be a hard sport to get out of his system. “I asked my coach in college if I could keep playing football, just to join the scout team and
get beat up in practice all the time, but he wouldn’t let me. I guess he thought I would get injured.”
And as for the reigning championship Rutland football team he left behind, the coach and town
eventually forgave him for leaving. “They ended up winning another championship with my
backup, so I think they got over it.”
