Parish Magazine Policy
At a meeting of the magazine sub-committee on 6 November 2006, the following policy was agreed
for all articles to be printed in the magazine:
•
Articles should be no longer than one side of A5 paper (one magazine page),
allowing space for any artwork.
•
The deadline for submission of articles is the 5th of the preceding month.
•
Wherever possible articles should be submitted by email to
[email protected]
It is impossible to do full justice to 23 years of faithful service as
churchwarden in a short parish magazine article. Nonetheless, I would like
to put in print my own gratitude to David Tyler who, with his longconsidered decision not to stand for re-election at the ADCM, leaves the
role of churchwarden and leaves a very hard act to follow. David has
brought his remarkable work ethic and his considerable professional
experience to bear on the beautifully maintained and improved fabric of
St Giles’ Church Medbourne. He has been diligent in paying attention to
the needs of the congregation and the wider community. He has been
remarkably supportive not just to me but to a succession of Rectors.
The affection in which he is held was borne out by the incredible generosity shown in the collection for him, and in the heartfelt presentation to him
by friends and parishioners.
I hope that David will get the hard-earned rest he deserves, and that he and
Val will enjoy the time they now shall have together.

GARDENER’S CORNER
JUNE 2012
This is the month of the longest of daylight hours and this gives the
opportunity to relax in the garden. After a hard day’s work, even if it is gardening
there is nothing like a stroll around the garden, listening to the evening bird songs,
watching the changing colours as the sun goes down and the evening fragrances.
Once the danger of frost has passed (usually the first week of this month) it
should be safe to plant our your bedding plants and tender vegetables, When you
take out the old winter plants, remember they can go on the compost heap. If you
have Polyanthus it can be divided and planted in a shaded spot to grow on for
replanting in the autumn.
Lent Lunches 2012
The Lent Lunches proved to be an outstanding success this year. We raised the
highest figure we have ever reached. It would be very unfair to show how much was
raised at each lunch, but the total came to £2075.92.
It would be very remiss not to thank those who hosted them. The Lent Lunches do
require a considerable amount of time and effort, and of course the cost of the food.
This year our Lent Lunches were held at the homes of:Kate Nicholson, Stockerston Hall.
Audrey Hackett, Medbourne.
Mary Rose de Lisle, Lyddington.
Tara Blackman, Drayton.
Margaret Theakston, Great Easton.
David Ross, Nevill Holt Hall.
The soft fruit season is due to begin. To avoid your fruit being
taken by our feathered friends ensure you cover them (the fruit) with
fine netting. If you can net down to the ground this will save the fruit
disappearing. The soft fruit group consists of gooseberries, red/
white/black currents, raspberries and strawberries. Strawberries
ideally want straw placed under the plant to protect the berries from
damage either from the soil or rain. Check that as the fruit ripens,
you get it picked especially if we have a wet spell, as they are prone to getting mildew and rotting.
As these functions were part of our Parish Project this year, it is appropriate to
mention the last two events which were also highly successful.
Gardener’s Tip:
Plants in the house are a must, from the foliage to flowers they add a whole
new dimension to your rooms. We all like to have a break and so do your plants.
Now is the time to put them out into the garden in a cool spot and let them get some
fresh air, refreshing rain and some dappled sunlight. As with normal potted plants
don’t forget to water and feed them.
Last week Joss and Mike Mallock engaged Mosaic, a group of eight singers, four
ladies and four gentlemen. Without any music they entertained us with a tremendous
variety of songs, from classics to songs like Shenandoah. A group I am sure we will
be using again.
“Kids in Church”
3-year-old Rhys : 'Our Father, Who does art in heaven, Harold is His
name. Amen.'
A little boy was overheard praying:
'Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm
having a real good time like I am.’
We had the superb Harborough Band and Training Band in Medbourne. The church
was packed and another hugely entertaining evening was held. Our thanks to the
great work of David and Val Tyler and Margaret Tuffs for providing us with such a
splendid occasion.
These last two events made over £1400 between them and bring our support for
“Light in Africa” to approximately £3475.
As you can see we are well on our way to another very good year and with your very
generous support I am sure we can again achieve a significant total to help a very
worthy and small charity where the money raised will go directly to the project.

Over 30 years experience
A twelve hour cascade of church bells ringing down the length of the Welland valley
is to take place on Monday 4th June 2012 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
It is planned to ring the bells in every church tower in turn down the Welland Valley
from its source at Sibbertoft, in the very centre of England near Naseby, to the Wash
sixty five miles away.
including Lime Mortar

There are some 34 towers with ringable bells in the valley. Starting at 9 am and
allowing 20 minutes for each tower it will take 12 hours to ring down the Valley to
Surfleet. This, the last tower nearest the Wash, has a ring of 12 bells (most of the
towers have only 5 or 6 bells); it is hoped for a special ring on these bells as a fitting
end to the day. But even further down is Fosdyke with its one bell. This will be rung
60 times at dusk in association with the lighting of its beacon.
Statistics. Of the 44 settlements or so in the 65 mile (105 km) long valley, only 34
have church towers* with ringable bells, over 200 bells in all. Other churches whose
bells can only chime** are joining in. There should be some 38 churches in all. They
are in five counties, (Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Cambridgeshire and
Lincolnshire). Three dioceses (Peterborough, Leicester, and Lincoln) and seven
branches of the Diocesan Guilds of church bell ringers are involved.
*In Ringing terms all churches with bells have towers, whether they have spires or not.
**chiming is when the bell is just swung from side to side; ringing is where the bell is turned in
a full circle.
The idea of one church calling another in turn right down the Welland valley seems a
beautiful, traditional, and romantic way to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

Doctors Surgery: The Surgery have now had their own dedicated telephone line installed.
Out of the mouths of children….
A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorise one of the
most quoted passages in the Bible - Psalm 23. she gave the children one month
to learn the passage. Little James was excited about the task, but try as he
might he just could not remember the Psalm. After much practice he could
barely get past the first line. On the day that the children were to recite Psalm 23
in front of the congregation, James was very nervous. When it was his turn, he
stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, “The Lord is my Shepherd, that’s
all I need to know!”
With each course you will be given a glass of wine specially
selected to complement what you are eating.
(Further wine may be purchased).
You can travel at your own pace (within reason!) around the village.
The evening is very popular and always seems to go really well.

Walking Group
During prayers in church one Sunday, there was a loud whistle from one of the
pews. Tommy’s mother was horrified. She told him to be quiet and after church
asked him “Tommy, whatever made you do such a thing?” Tommy answered
soberly “I asked God to teach me to whistle, and He did!”
Owing to continuous rain we very reluctantly
had to cancel our April walk.
Our June walk will be on Wednesday 20th, so
we are hoping for better weather.
A Sunday School teacher was describing how Lot’s wife looked back and turned
into a pillar of salt, when little Jason interrupted “My Mummy looked back once
when she was driving”, he announced triumphantly, “and she turned in to a lamp
post!”
Meet at Great Easton Village Hall 9.30.
All welcome but participants must be

IRELAND & LONGHILL
GREAT EASTON PARISH COUNCIL
THE RECREATION GROUND - CLARKE'S PIECE
The search for a playing field for the children of the village first appears in the
parish council minutes of 1890, and throughout the last century a@empts were
made to find some land for that purpose.
On 7th May, 122 years aDer that first mee?ng, the Parish Council signed the lease
with Harborough District Council, leasing Clarke's Piece to us for 50 years with an
op?on to renew at the end of that ?me.
At the same ?me we signed a lease with the Recrea?on Ground Commi@ee
assigning the field to them for the same period. So, for the next 50 years at least,
Clarke's Piece is safely owned and managed by the village.
Now is the ?me, finally to thank the Clarke family for the giD of the land, and to
thank the Recrea?on Ground Commi@ee for their brilliant achievement in giving
us all such a splendid and imagina?ve playing field for now and for the future as
far as we can foresee.
THE QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE
Don't miss out on the Great Easton celebra?ons, which were detailed in the
programmes delivered to every house in Great Easton, and also available in the
shop for a small dona?on to the jubilee funds.
Thank you to everybody who sent me ‘get well’ cards,
messages and flowers, they have all helped speed the
healing process.
Also for the many sympathy cards for the sad loss of my
mother, Edna, previously of Medbourne, latterly of Great
Easton.
Your kind words have been a great help during a very
difficult time for me and my father, Tony Sutton.
Kind regards,
Virginia Snow

to employ more Midwives. This resolution would like to make sure that the number of
midwives increases in order to give the prospective mother more help and support at
what can be a very difficult time. We finished the evening with a round of Pictionary
and some delicious refreshments. During April we held a Bridge Drive in order to
raise funds towards the Parkinsons Disease Charity. I would like to thank everyone
for the wonderful afternoon tea and cakes that were provided - those taking part,
without exception, all thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.
We have members and friends going on a visit to Highgrove on Tuesday15th
May. Please remember to take a packed lunch and identification (current passport/
photo driving licence or two utility bills). The coach will leave promptly at 9am and
hopes to return to Medbourne before 6pm.

Primroses, Cowslips and Oxlips ………
At the April meeting Joe Sharman, an expert on primroses, gave us a very
enjoyable talk illustrated with slides. Apparently just three original species lead to
all the cultivars we now have.
In previous centuries, wild primroses, oxlips and cowslips
carpeted the woodlands where it was shady and moist and
also covered lots of the countryside as there were more
meadows and these were wetter, retaining more moisture in
the summertime. Cottage gardens used to be full of these
flowers as there was a plentiful supply of manure to enrich
the soil and help to keep it moist.

With drier summers, the moisture-loving primroses began to
diminish in numbers and also, as the motorcar supplanted
the horse, manure supplies decreased significantly.

However, there are now many nurseries selling a huge variety of these flowers
with exciting names such as ‘blue silver lace double’ and ‘hose in hose’ type
breeds (one flower inside another). They can be grown in shady places, in
dampish corners, under trees and in herbaceous borders sheltered by other
plants. The clumps of flowers can be divided up in Spring if the ground isn’t too
dry, or in the Autumn (Aug/Sept) when we have had some rain. They can also be
grown very easily from seed. If the plants die this is usually due to drought or
attack by vine weevil.

Joe Sharman brought along lots of plants for sale, many of which he had illustrated with slides, and most members went home with a plant or two.

State of the Church:
Attendance remained satisfactory and the church building was in good repair apart
from rotted floor joists beneath the north pews which needed urgent attention at
considerable cost, needing grant aid.
Social and Fund-raising Events:
Julien Sheridan would organise a Silent Auction.
The village would have a fund raising stand at Blaston Show on 24 June. Helen
Kennedy would lead this but would need a good deal of help. Sarah West would
organise refreshments for a modest sum at the annual Ride & Stride event on
8 September. Church monthly flowers would be given after services to the unwell
or those celebrating an event.
Civic Matters:
The long term use and maintenance of the acquired phone box was discussed but
for the moment it would be used as a produce & books exchange point. The
lessons to be learnt from the now-withdrawn application for a wind turbine within
the village boundary were discussed. Future planning applications would be
displayed on the village notice board, including that for a possible anaerobic
digester at Medbourne Grange..
The full record of proceedings at the meetings are minuted and can be read on
the church notice board.

The meeting of Great Easton WI on Tuesday 1st May started with the annual
resolution discussion. This year it focused on the proposal to call on the
government to increase investment in the midwifery service. The motion was
carried unanimously.
After this, Lynne Woods, who is based in Oakham, spoke to us about massage
and all the benefits it can bring to us, both physically and mentally. Massage has
been used throughout time but interest in it waned after World War One when it
became synonymous with a less salubrious practice! Happily its reputation is now
restored and massage is used by a variety of healthcare practitioners.
Lynne showed us how to give hand and arm massages and we were all soon in
pairs trying out our massage skills, which proved most amusing.
After 9-11 Lynne and a colleague went out to New York on two occasions to
provide simple, but very effective chair massages to the rescue workers. It helped
them to unwind in a time of extreme stress and trauma. Lynne demonstrated this
particular massage technique on a few of our members.
Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 6th June at 7.30 in Great Easton
Village Hall, when we will have a talk entitled "Life on the home front". New
members and visitors are always welcome.

The Show’s main ring displays will also include heavy horse displays, terrier racing,
classic and vintage tractors and show jumping. There will be many equine events

In line with the Society’s objec?ves to con?nue to develop the show, all new
a@rac?ons this year will include three major show jumping classes, cookery

altered to encompass the increased space requirements of the addi?onal

The 55th Show will be held once again on the Blaston Road showground which is
located between the villages of Blaston and Slawston in Leicestershire. All money
raised from the Show will be donated to a variety of local chari?es, including
LOROS.
The hugely entertaining pre-show party will take place on Friday 22nd June 2011.
Bookings for all classes are now taking place. For full informa?on about class
bookings or any general queries, please contact the relevant sec?on head by
visi?ng www.blastonshow.co.uk
At our Plant Fayre and Coffee Morning in Blaston we
raised £280.44 for LOROS which we are very pleased
with.
Thank you to all those who kindly donated things for us to
sell on the day, to those who volunteered their time and
services and not forgetting those who came along and
spent their money.

Stockerston News
St Peter's AGM was held at Stockerston Hall on the 18th April and we thank Catherine
and Henry Nicholson for their hospitality. All officers were re-elected and the Rector
thanked everyone for their support and dedication. The number of people on the
Electoral Roll has increased to 26.
We were also pleased to hold the Parish AGM at Stockerston after the United Service
on the 5th Sunday in April.
Plans are coming together for Stockerston's Jubilee celebrations on Sunday 3rd June,
when we all look forward to a special community event.
Once again we will be running a market stall in Uppingham on Saturday 9th June and
we will be very grateful for any donations. Please do pop along and support us if you
are out and about.
Our thanks to Georgina Halliday who prepares the church for us this month.
