Both were born in 1933, Leiber in Baltimore, Stoller in Queens, New York. They were both students in Los Angeles in 1950 when *ERRY,EIBER they were introduced by a mutual friend. They found they shared a love of rhythm and blues music and began writing right away. Leiber served as the sharp-witted lyricist while the classically trained but jazz-loving Stoller wrote the music. By the end of the year, jazz/blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon had recorded and performed their first commercial song, “Real Ugly Woman.” By the time they were 20, in just three years of working together, their early songs had been recorded by a collection of true allstars in the rhythm and blues genre including Jimmy Witherspoon, Charles Brown, Little Willie Littlefield, Bull Moose Jackson, Linda Hopkins, Ray Charles and Willie Mae (Big Mama) Thornton who made the first recording of “Hound Dog” in 1952. -IKE3TOLLER Atlantic Records executives were impressed and in 1955 signed the duo to the music industry’s first independent production deal, forever changing the course of production in the industry. For the next several years, well into the late 1960s, the hits of Leiber and Stoller were constantly at the top of the charts, including the memorable “Stand By Me,” “Spanish Harlem” Please see Page 2 .7)3(/.!4/,)6%s&2%3./#!s"/8/&&)#% 777'#0,!9%23#/-7772/'%22/#+!3#/- /6%2452%0AGE Leiber and Stoller (from page 1) and “I (Who Have Nothing),” by Ben E.
