Saying “Hello” to Dolly!
Longtime GCP veteran Janet Glaudé will play irrepressible matchmaker Dolly Levi in
Good Company Players’ production of Hello, Dolly! beginning May 19 at Roger Rocka’s.
We asked Janet via email to take a look back at some of her experiences with GCP.
How did you first become involved with Good Company
Players? Your first show?
Back in 1982
I
decided to audition for
my first show with GCP,
Broadway Scrapbook in
the 2nd Space, after coming to see the production
of South Pacific and thoroughly enjoying myself. I
actually forgot a line in my
audition song and thought
“after this they will never
allow me in.” It is 2016 and Janet (left) with Sharon Leal
I am still enjoying myself and Tami Cowger in Dreamand thankful that GCP al- girls, 1990.
lowed me in after forget-
ting the words to my song at my first audition. I was
a nervous young girl in my twenties who loved singing and thought this would be a good outlet for that.
Your favorite show as a performer?
Saying what show is my
favorite is very difficult
because I have been in so
many wonderful shows
at GCP. If I had to choose
one of them it would be
Dreamgirls as Effie White
because of the wonderful storyline in that show. With Robert Vargas in

– Fats Waller music! – and
All of us at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater and Good Company Players were deeply saddened by the passing last
month of Frances Huffman. Frances and members of her family owned the building that became our theater back
in 1978. From the very beginning she was our supporter, our fan and our angel.
The theater is now in its 38th year, but back then a lot of people were warning Frances that we were probably a
bad risk because it would never work. Fortunately for us, Frances ignored them and pitched in to help us remake
the old Sprouse-Reitz store into a dinner-theater.
Frances looked forward to every show. And she looked after us, checking in frequently to make sure things were
okay. We are mourning the loss of a cherished and beloved friend.
Good Company Players’ production of The Little Mermaid is dedicated to Frances’ memory.

Looking Back with Janet Glaudé
Hairspray as Motormouth Maybelle.
There is another
show that has significance for me
and that is Anything Goes as Reno
Sweeney. [Director]
Nancy Miller cast
me in my first lead
role and had more
confidence in me
than I had in myself.
She was one of the
many people in my Rockin’ it as “Tina Turner”
life who helped me in Beehive, 2005.
build that confidence
in myself that I wasn’t sure was there.
Most difficult/demanding role as an actor or vocally?
The most demanding role was Effie White in
Dreamgirls because of the many emotions you
had to convey. Singing the song “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” was emotional in itself.
As Motormouth
Maybelle in Hairspray.
Any funny/embarassing
onstage flubs?
I don’t remember any
funny or embarrassing
flubs, but I have forgotten my lines before and
that in itself can be embarrassing… when everything gets quiet and
you realize it’s your
line.
Strangest costume?
My strangest costume was during my second
show, Pajama Game. We all had to showcase
different items from a sewing kit and I had to
get [onstage] through a rather small opening
with this big red pincushion on my head!
Gordon Moore will be playing Horace Vandergelder
in Hello, Dolly! You last appeared with him in the
much different play, Proposals, at 2nd Space. Any
thoughts about the reunion?
I thoroughly enjoyed working opposite Gordon Moore in
Proposals. It was my
first non-musical play
and it helps when you
have a wonderful cast, With Gordon Moore in
which we did. Gordon Proposals.
is such a professional
on stage and a very funny man. I can’t wait to
play opposite him in Hello Dolly.
Anything else you’d like to add?
One of the many rewards of performing, besides performing itself at GCP, are the people I
have encountered, the friends I have made and
the many backstage moments that the audience
never sees – when the excitement builds when
you are opening a new show and your cast
members are telling you to have a good show
and “break a leg.”
Good Company Players’ production of Hello, Dolly!

A Memory Play Followed
by a Memorable Comedy
Good Company Players’ production of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie continues at their 2nd Space
Theatre through April 17. Amanda Wingfield is a faded,
tragic remnant of Southern gentility who lives in a dingy
St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom, and her daughter,
Laura. Tom seeks escape in the movies. Laura’s life centers
around her glass collection. Her mother’s anxiety to see her
married has driven Laura more and more imward. Their
lives are shaken when Tom invites a young man of his acquaintance to take dinner with the family. A drama of great
tenderness, charm and beauty, The Glass Menagerie is one
of the most famous plays of the modern theatre. Rated PG
Oscar Wilde’s sharply witty comedy An Ideal Husband
opens at Good Company Players’ 2nd Space April 21. This
delightful comedy revolves around blackmail and political
corruption. When a highly esteemed member of the House
of Commons is blackmailed by a vengeful femme
fatale into publicly supporting a fraudulent
scheme, he faces public disgrace and the loss of
his wife’s respect and love. His unconventional
friend joins forces with beleaguered statesman’s
mischievous sister and they lay a trap to foil the
dastardly adventuress, flirting with danger -- and
each other along the way. Witty, suspenseful and
romantic, An Ideal Husband satirizes the timeless
conflict between ethics, politics and power.
Rated PG
