MADISON CLUB MEMBERS WHO PAY FOR PARKING: Parking will still be available in the 40 designated spots on the first two levels of the parking ramp. If all 40 MC spots are full, parking permit holders can park in any of the open self-parking spots throughout the parking ramp. If the ramp is completely full, MC members have the option to use the Hilton Hotel valet parking. Valet parking for Madison Club members is $7 per hour with a flat rate not to exceed $21. If using the valet parking, please notify attendant that you are a MC member attending a Club event or dining at the Club. If you forget your parking permit, please stop at the Club's front desk before you go to the ramp. Please make sure your parking sticker is placed in your front windshield. Any vehicles without a MC parking sticker will be ticketed if they are parked in one of the 40 designated Club parking spots. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A MC PARKING PERMIT: MC members who do not pay for monthly parking can park in any of the open Hilton self-parking ramp spots. THURSDAY, JUNE 11 AT 6 PM Whether you are a cyclist or a pedestrian, join us at the next meeting of the History Club at the Madison Club to hear the complex and fascinating history behind the popularity of biking in Wisconsin. Our guest speaker, Nick Hoffman, will trace the interesting story of Wisconsin's first "bicycling boom," from the velocipede craze of 1869 through the "wheel fever" of the 1890s. From its start in the 19th Century, cycling in Wisconsin has been defined by a familiar and often impassioned debate over who should be allowed to ride, where they could ride, and even what they could wear. An entertaining speaker, accomplished researcher and avid cyclist, Mr. Hoffman co-authored "Wheel Fever – How Wisconsin Became a Great Bicycle State", a Wisconsin Historical Society Press book about the origins of bicycling in Wisconsin and why those origins still matter. In "Wheel Fever", which received several book awards, Mr. Hoffman and his co-author Jesse Gant challenge the reader to imagine anew the democratic possibilities that animated cycling's early debates. Mr. Hoffman serves as the Curator at the History Museum at the Castle in Appleton, Wisconsin, and is co-curator of Shifting Gears – A Cyclical History of Badger Cycling – a new and exciting exhibit currently at the Wisconsin Historical Museum through October 2015. Led by Ellsworth Brown, Wisconsin Historical Society Director, this member trip will take you through an interactive and lively tour of American history. We will have the opportunity to take a tram tour of Old World Wisconsin with stops at ethnic farmsteads where we will recreate the chores on the 1880 German farm; including dairying, flax and wool processing, and working with horse and oxen. Plus, sit down in a traditional one-room school! Your lunch, at the 1897 Clausing Octagonal Barn, will feature homestyle Yankee pot roast, seasonal vegetables, and pie. End your day by taking a spin on a replica 1890s tricycle or peddle a hiwheeler! As a special treat, all attendees will enjoy a special presentation from famed speaker, professor and author Jerry Apps*. This exciting and exclusive opportunity is $129 per person. This trip is limited to the first 25 participants.
