Sigma Alpha Epsilon, under the leadership and direction of the Supreme Council, has made a historic
decision that will realign the Fraternity to produce the original member’s experience that our Founding Fathers
envisioned. This change will adopt a method, practice and policy that treat all members equally and fairly and
strive for a continuous development of our members throughout their lives. Effective March 9, 2014, newmember (pledge) programming will be eliminated completely from our operations, and the classification of new
member (pledge) will no longer exist. All chapters and colonies will be required to implement this important
change.
The new True Gentleman Experience will enhance the educational and leadership experience of our members
and build upon their development during each year of their collegiate tenure. The Supreme Council unanimously
supports the program in order to ensure a more positive, meaningful membership for our collegiate members
and alumni. From the moment a man joins Sigma Alpha Epsilon, he should take personal ownership of his
Fraternity and play an active role in our future.
The education of our members will shift from a new-member (pledge) term to a holistic educational period
in which members learn about the Fraternity’s values, mission, creed and history and develop personally over the
course of their collegiate tenure. In addition, the goal is to provide the skills necessary for our members to excel
in the professional world once they graduate. For more information on this historic change, CLICK HERE.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Those of you, who attended
the recent Founders’ Day
Dinner, were surprised (and
possibly shocked) by Eminent
Supreme Archon Brad Cohen’s
announcement of the new True
Gentlemen Experience and the
immediate abolishment of the
pledge program, we all
experienced to one degree or
another. The subject is covered
in great detail in this issue and through the True
Gentlemen Experience link. I urge you to take the time
to digest the change thoroughly.
Cornell University pledge, who died during a pledge
initiation event. If you Google “Sigma Alpha Epsilon
Hazing or Lawsuits”, you will see what I’m referring to.
Recent lawsuits have put our fraternity on the brink of
financial disaster.
Some of the things we experienced as pledges, we
can look back on and laugh. However, many of the
events, which led up to this, aren’t the least bit funny.
With the long-term viability of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at
stake, the Supreme Council had no choice, but to point
the Fraternity in a different direction. As ESA Cohen
told us, pledge programs didn’t come to be until after
World War II. ΣΑΕ flourished for almost 100 years
before that, without them.
Having been involved with our fraternity at the

NEWS FROM NATIONAL
Sigma Alpha Epsilon recently announced the 25 collegiate members who have
been selected by the Supreme Council for the 2014 Inner Circle. These
undergraduates represent our more than 240 chapters in the Realm, and they
were chosen not only for their leadership but also for their scholarship, service
and extra-curricular involvement.
Nick Wright
Our ΣΑΕ San Diego Area Association can be proud that two of our Chapter
EAs are among those selected, Nicholas Wright (San Diego State), and Michael
McKinney (Cal State-San Marcos).
The Inner Circle takes place April 4-6 in Prince Frederick, Maryland, and
these gentlemen will interact with an incredible lineup of featured alumni
speakers along with the Supreme Council.

VOICE OF THE ESA
GREETINGS, BROTHERS!
In July 2013, at our 157th
Anniversary Convention in
Chicago, I had the distinct
honor and privilege to be
elected as your Eminent
Supreme Archon. I take
this responsibility with
great pride and
determination to help lead
our organization for the
next two years and hopefully to make it even stronger
and better than when I found it.
way. Therefore, I have launched an alumni-mentor
program in which we ask each undergraduate member
to reach out to an alumnus member in his area, not
seeking donations or much time but to serve simply as
a mentor. Meet him for a cup of coffee, share your
experiences in ΣΑΕ and hear what today’s
undergraduates are facing. Build a rapport and bond
with just one member. We all need a mentor, and we all
needed one especially as undergraduates. By fulfilling
this goal, we can engage another 14,000 alumni
members back into the fold in just a small, nonmonetary way and allow our collegiate members to see
that membership is for life.
I have set some lofty goals during this next
biennium, and the only way we will accomplish many of
them is through the participation of alumni members. I
have enjoyed many blessings and successes, both
personally and professionally, since graduating from the
University of Arizona in 1985. ΣΑΕ helped to shape me
as a person, businessman, leader, husband and father.
We often hear brothers tell someone they “were an
SAE.” Brothers, ΣΑΕ is a membership that should last a
lifetime.
The days of one chapter adviser, one house
corporation president and one Province Archon doing
all the work are over. I have called for every chapter to
maintain an active chapter advisory board with
members who can work with each chapter officer in
his area of expertise. In addition, I am stressing a full
house-corporation board, whether or not a chapter
owns a house, and every province to recruit a full
Province Council. This way, we engage more alumni to
be involved and develop new leaders to pass the torch
We changed our nomenclature in order to keep up every few years so that the phoenix will always remain

Many of us joined ΣΑΕ for the brotherhood and
the tremendous network that awaits us after
graduation. Unfortunately, we have fallen short on Bradley M. Cohen
assisting our collegiate members both during their time Eminent Supreme Archon

BRO PRO-FILES: MIKE BOYLE (CA-TH ’72) - BY BEN AVEY
Someday, if not already, we
will start referring to Viejas
Arena as the house that
Fisher built. His record of
h i g h p r o fi l e a t h l e t i c
accomplishments may be
considered unrivaled on
Montezuma Mesa,
especially at his home in
the Aztec Bowl.
Boyle’s time at SDSU was turbulent. In the midst of
the Vietnam War and the struggle for racial equality
protest was rampant on college campuses throughout
the United States. Students and protestors at Kent
State and U.C. Berkeley had even been shot dead. It
was tense and the Associated Students often seemed
to be at the center of controversy. But he succeeded in
his academic and leadership posts, graduating from
SDSU in 1972 and moving on to Law School at U.C.
Hastings in San Francisco.
But, like so many things at
San Diego State University,
ΣΑΕ’s can take solace in the fact that one of our own
played a small, he maintains microscopic, early part in
that hallowed tale.
Today, he is an attorney at Higgs Fletcher & Mack,
LLP where he specializes in law related to the
construction industry. From 1978 to 2005 Boyle
became a partner at the firm and was a member of its
governing partner board. From 2006 to 2011 he served
as the corporate general counsel for J.R. Filanc
Construction Company, Inc., before returning to Higgs
Fletcher & Mack, LLP where he will soon retire. He also
has served on the City of San Diego’s Citizens Finance
Committee, was an officer and Director with the San
Diego County Taxpayers’ Association, acting Director
of the City of San Diego’s Real Estate Assets
Depar tment, and SANDAG’s 2050 Regional
Transportation Plan, Stakeholders Working Group.
The year was 1972 and a few years before the
Aztecs football team had left historic Aztec Bowl to
play their games in Jack Murphy Stadium (i.e.
Qualcomm). With their departure, Aztecs shops general
manager Harvey Goodfriend had an idea – to build an
arena for basketball and other events in its place.
Harvey approached Mike Boyle (CA-TH ‘72) suggesting
he write a paper on the matter. In Boyle’s humble
words, he simply wrote what Harvey and a design
professional told him to write, and the idea was placed
on paper. Boyle takes zero credit for the arena,
deferring to Goodfriend (already largely responsible for
our original Aztec Center student union) a visionary
who conceived the idea of an arena and (along with
others who labored to complete the design, funding
and construction) actually made it happen. But it’s a fun
tale showing the engagement of our order
with everyday life in San Diego as well as the mentoring
and encouragement that our students have received
from quality educators and staff. Decades later in 1997
Goodfriend saw that Boyle was invited to the arena’s
opening.
Boyle continues to be an active member of the San
Diego Area ΣΑΕ Alumni Association where he is on the
Board, and has served the chapter and university for
decades. In addition to giving back to the public
institutions that gave him and his family so much, he
appreciates the opportunity to see old friends, meet
new friends, and enjoy a view of our scenic harbor with
a cold drink at the annual summer soiree.
Advice for brothers graduating today is simple – be
tenacious. As we fight our way out of the worst
economic crisis in a lifetime, opportunities are rare and
tenacity will often win over many other qualities. Short
of that, he recommends finding a career in science,

CAL THETA (SDSU) - BY BY NICK WRIGHT, EA
Hello Brothers, Cal Theta is
doing great and has been
extremely busy since the start
of Spring Semester.
We initiated 12 new members
on March 9th, in light of the
n e w Tr u e G e n t l e m a n
Experience. The active brothers

members into our brotherhood with open arms and
are continuing to educate them on our unique history.
We celebrated Paddy Murphy with a week-long
exchange with the lovely ladies of Alpha Chi Omega.
Paddy Murphy was a great experience for all members
and a great story to pass on to our new members.
We have recently partnered with the Holy Spirit
Church and Alpha Phi for a community service project
in early May, where we will be gathering supplies and
shipping care packages to soldiers currently overseas.
Cal Theta is excited to partake in this opportunity and
partner with the wonderful group of gals of Alpha Phi.
We are currently undefeated in both our
intramural soccer team and basketball team and on our
way to earning our sports banner for the second year
in a row.
Phi Alpha, Nick Wright, EA
CAL CHI (UCSD) - BY KEVIN NEVALSKY, EA
Brothers, this Winter quarter has
been a busy one. First of all, I would
to announce and congratulate our
newly initiated Theta class as
brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon!
They have worked hard to better
themselves, distinguish our chapter,
and better our community and I am
confident in their ability to help our
chapter flourish. The addition of
Theta class has brought our roster
to over 70 members, the highest since our chartering.
This year our chapter GPA continued to improve to an
outstanding 3.16 overall, well above the all-men’s
average.
Our second annual philanthropy this February was
an overwhelming success. In all, we came close to
doubling last years amount by raising roughly $3,000 to
the for the Children’s Miracle Network.
With the end of pledging and the inception of the
new True Gentleman Experience, our fraternity has a
lot of work ahead especially in changes to recruitment.
However, we will not hesitate as we look forward to
using the transition as an opportunity to strengthen
our chapter and the community around us.

CAL ALPHA GAMMA(SAN MARCOS) - BY MICHAEL MCKINNEY, EA
Hello Brothers, the California
Alpha-Gamma chapter initiated
18 new members on March 7th,
2014. The chapter also helped
with Vista's Big Give; a charity
that partners with Make-a-Wish
in order to make dreams come
true. The chapter, along with the
community, helped raise over
75,000 dollars for the Make-a-Wish foundation.
The chapter will continue with it's summer
project, Rebuilding the South, and head down to New
Orleans to give back to the community affect by so
many natural disasters.
www.saesd.org
On May 4th the chapter will be hosting a golf
tournament at Twin Oaks Golf Course. Along with the
Rebuilding the South project, the golf tournament will
help fund the Children's Miracle Network and the
Crohns and Colitis Foundations of America.
We were happy to see all of the brothers at the
Founders Day dinner and like to thank Dick and Adam
for putting on an amazing event.
Finally, myself and the chapter would like to
congratulate Nick Wright, California Theta, for being
selected to the Inner Circle. The alumni should be very
proud that the greater San Diego area has two
participants going to the Inner Circle.

Over 170 Brothers Attend Founders’ Day Dinner
The San Diego Area
Alumni Association
sponsored a dinner
party to celebrate
the
158th
anniversary of the
founding of our
Sigma Alpha Epsilon
ESA Brad Cohen
F r a t e r n i t y. T h e
memorable event, which was held again at the Bahia
Resort Hotel, was well attended by by over 170
Alumni and Active Members alike (See photos on
following pages).
Following Brad’s well received report, a high point
of the evening was the presentation of the “2014
Brother of the Year Award” to Mike Templeton
(OH-EP ’63). After a standing ovation, Dick presented
Brother Templeton with a recognition plaque, and
invited last year’s Brother of the Year, John Rebelo
(CA-BE ’62), to transfer custody of the
commemorative gold watch over to Brother
Templeton for his safe keeping. Mike thanked the
Members of the Association for honoring him, and
accepted it in tribute to his long-time friend, Brother
Frank Arrington (CA-TH ’64), who encouraged
him to become active in the Association. Mike then
went on to encourage all Alumni to get involved in the
Association, going forward.
The evening festivities began with a 1-1/2 hour
social period, where the Brothers had the opportunity
to enjoy cocktails, renew friendships, and share
remembrances of the many good times derived from
being Members of our great Fraternity.
After the awarding of prizes from the opportunity
drawing by Brothers Chris McCoy (CA-TH ’02) and
Mark Mays (CA-TH ’67), Dick asked for a moment
of silence in honor of four Brothers who recently
passed on to Chapter Eternal - Frank Arrington
(CA-TH ’64), Joe Turner (CA-TH ’58), Chuck
McKeown (CA-TH ’63), and Jim Sternberg
(CA-TH ’63).
Following the call to order by Alumni Association
President, Dick Troncone (CA-TH ’65), the
Brothers were led in offering the ΣAE Grace by Tim
Sirota from our Cal Chi Chapter at UCSD. Dick
then welcomed everyone and introduced Brother Joe
Farrage (CA-TH ’89) as the Master of Ceremonies
for the evening.
Known as “The Singing Fraternity”, the evening
was appropriately concluded with the singing of
“Violets”, “Friends”, and an enthusiastic “Come Sing”,
led by Brother Bob Battenfield (CA-TH ’61).
Joe began by relating some of his experiences as a
Member of ΣAE, and the positive influence it has had
on his life. He pointed out as an example, the help he
had received from Brothers Dick Troncone and Ron
Roberts (CA-TH ’65) when first starting his
professional career.
Joe then asked former Brother of the Year
awardees to stand and be recognized. After
introducing the head table which included the EAs
from our three area Chapters (bringing enthusiastic
cheers from those Active Brothers in attendance), and
Austin Evans (WI-AL ’05) (Province Chi-Alpha
Archon), our special guest, ESA Brad Cohen (AZAL ’85), was invited to present his view on the state of
the Fraternity (see the front page and Voice of the
ESA sections of this issue).

Founders’ Day Commemorative Golf Tournament - by Jeff Byroads
A great mixture of alumni and undergraduates
enjoyed a spectacular day at Coronado Golf Club,
on the Saturday after Founders’ Day. The
competition was tight with the winning team only
winning by one stroke. The 4-person teams
scramble-format winners were Brothers Bill
O’Conner (CO-CH ’69), Dick Lareau (CA-BE
’54), and Warren Goetze (CA-TH ’57) & guest.
The Tournament Committee Members, Jeff
Byroads (CA-TH ’78), Gary Losey (CA-TH
’79), and Mike “Mad Dog” Matson (CA-TH
’70) all said, “We look forward to doing it again
next year, don’t miss it!”
San Diego County’s New High Tech Emergency System
Our speaker at the February 4th
Association Luncheon was Brother Ron
Roberts (CA-TH ’65) - San Diego
County Supervisor. Brother Roberts
made a very interesting presentation on
the County’s new high tech Emergency
System.
Your family may not be together when
disaster strikes, so it is important to plan
in advance: how you will contact one
another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in different
disaster situations. The SD Emergency App contains disaster preparedness
information, interactive checklists to help you to create your emergency
plan, build an emergency supplies kit, and when disaster strikes; the SD
Emergency App will keep you and your family informed with emergency
updates, interactive emergency maps, and shelter locations.
The County of San Diego Office of Emergency Services (OES) created
the SD Emergency App to better prepare and inform San Diego County
residents and visitors about disasters. With SD Emergency, the tools you
need to plan, prepare, and respond in an emergency are right at your
fingertips. For more information, CLICK HERE.

June Luncheon Meeting
Tom Seidler (Padres Owner) will be our speaker at the June 17th Alumni Association Luncheon Meeting at
the San Diego Yacht Club. RSVP to the ΣΑΕ Voice Mail at (619) 685-5294
If you are a current member of the Association and have a speaker recommendation, please share it with any
board member. The board will then consider your recommendation at a subsequent board meeting. Because we
don’t plan luncheons for every month, we are limited to the number of speakers that we can engage. So, don’t be
offended if your suggestion isn’t promptly placed on our calendar. If your recommendation is selected you may
be asked to secure the speaker for a date agreed to by our Events/Social Program Committee.
So, keep your eyes and ears open at your outside speaker experiences and enhance the quality of our
luncheons with a recommendation.
Join the San Diego Area ΣΑΕ Alumni Association
Our award winning association was founded in 1932 and continues
to thrive today, with over 200 Alumni ΣΑΕ
members. We welcome all ΣΑΕ Alumni, regardless
of chapter or graduation year, to reconnect with
your fraternity through association with us. We
work hard to engage alumni with positive feelings
about the Fraternity. We have regular luncheons,
with key note speakers, other social events
including our annual Founders Day Dinner and
Holiday Party, our "2011 award winning" website,
and this "2011 award winning" quarterly enewsletter, chapter support of local chapters, and philanthropic
activities.
If you are an ΣΑΕ and are interested in joining our local association,
please fill out and mail in the enclosed Membership Application Form.
POLICY ON ALUMNI NEWSLETTER BRIEFS
In addition to news briefs containing information of interest to the
Brotherhood concerning local fraternity activities, the newsletter team
would like to bring back the “Alumni Updates” feature, which was part of
the newsletter a few years back. If you’re a current member of the
Association and you’ve changed jobs, received an honor or had some
other newsworthy event take place in your life, please send an email to
our Editor, Mike Templeton at [email protected] and we’ll include it
