History
Egyptians – Mummification Process.
Greeks - integrated fragrance into many of their rituals, ceremonies and personal care.
•
Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, French scientist, coined “aromatherapy”. He wrote
Aromatherpie in 1937.
•
Rene burned his hand in 1912 conducting a laboratory experiment. He quickly soaked it
in lavender oil and healed with no signs of scarring.
•
17th century French plague – doctors covered themselves head to toe in leather and
beaked masks with aromatic herbs inside. Hence the term “quacks”.
•
Those that were immune from the plagues were glove makers and perfumers. The cities
in the center of the lavender trade were spared. It is said that the daily exposure to the
antibacterial aromas is what protected the people from the disease.
•
Bible has over 100 references to use of essential oils – especially frankincense and myrrh
History
Today, studies are showing Essential oils to increase performance in athletes
and decrease stress in drivers and increase alertness during daily tasks.
In many personal care and cleaning products.
Richard Axel and Linda Buck (USA) won the 2004 Nobel Prize in
Physiology/Medicine for their discoveries of odorant receptors and their
relationship to the organization of the olfactory system.
Essential Oils Defined:
essential oil, es·sen·tial oil, noun
A natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic aroma
compounds of the plant or other source from which it is extracted.
Hydrophobic – external secretory structures - internal secretory structures
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are not really oils. They do not contain the fatty acids that
constitute what we would consider an actual oil.
Valerie Gennari Cooksley, author of Aromatherapy: Soothing Remedies to
Restore, Rejuvenate and Heal defines essential oils as “highly
concentrated plant constituents possessing potent medicinal and
cosmetic qualities.”
However, I think Stephanie Tourles nailed it in Organic Body Care recipes
when she said, “I consider essential oils the life force of the plant.”
What are Essential Oils?
Fragrance oils and essential oils are NOT the same thing. As a
rule of thumb, if you see the word “fragrance” or “fragrance oil” or
even “perfume” on anything, you can assume this is synthetic and
NOT natural. (Even if it says natural fragrance.)
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are wholly natural and cannot be patented; As such, you can expect
that the vast majority of mainstream healthcare practitioners will never recommend
essential oils as therapeutic alternatives to drugs. More importantly, because essential
oils cannot be patented, drug companies will not waste money studying them. This
limits our scientific knowledge of essential oils GREATLY, and the majority of what we
know about them are things that have been passed down through thousands of years of
personal use and experimentation.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation, often by using
steam. Essential oils are 50-100 times more potent than their herb form.
Construction Paper Test
To test your essential oil to see how “pure” it is, put a single drop of it on
a piece of construction paper. If it evaporates quickly and leaves no
noticeable ring, it is pure. If you have a ring left, then it is likely diluted by
the manufacturer with an oil of some sort (this test will not work for
Frankincense, myrrh, patchouli, and absolutes, or EO’s as resins).

Essential Oils Quality
Pure vs. synthetic – follow your nose.
Nice, clean smell and therapeutic effects.
Usually more expensive means higher quality and better
therapeutic value.
Less allergenic: most people have allergies and sensitivities to
synthetic fragrances. Pure essences do not typically evoke an
allergenic response.
Gas Chromatography testing will show an essential oils
makeup to ensure its quality.
Characteristics of Essential Oils
All 100% pure, unadulterated essential oils are
antibacterial.
Over 400,000 plants but only a few can yield pure
essential oils.
100 lbs. Lavender = 1 lb. essential oil
4000 lbs. handpicked rose petals = 1 lb. essential oil
“Be careful about reading
health books. You may die
of a misprint.”
Mark Twain
Safety Guidelines
Keep essential oils out of the reach of children.
Dilute essential oils in a carrier before using topically. Some undiluted oils can
cause skin irritations.
Keep essential oils away from the eyes. If you do get oil in the eye, do NOT
flush it out with water. Use an oil or milk.
Use caution when working with people with serious health conditions.
Citrus essential oils are photosensitive! Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds
for 3-4 hours after topical use.
Do not use essential oils during pregnancy. Lavender and Red Mandarin have
historically been used safely.
Test patch oil blends on the skin before applying it to a large area.
Ingesting: Follow Suggestions from manufacturer. Supplement laws vs. topical
use.

Why Choose Essential Oils?
Health Benefits
Mental, Emotional, Physical, Spiritual
9000+ years of history
Its fun and empowering!
What is Aromatherapy?
The use of essential oils to address various
physical, mental and emotional concerns.
It is a powerful tool that can alter, shift and
change mood and emotion.
Richard and Linda
Limbic System
Essential oils contact the
limbic system in less than
1 second when inhaled and
within 1-3 seconds when
applied topically.
Olfactory Sensory Testing (OST)
Essential oils that work best for emotional and mental
concerns are the ones that you like the most.
Simply, waft an essential oil bottle from side to side
under the nose, without touching the nose and take a
deep breath.
Do you like it? On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best,
and 1 being the worst, where does the scent rank?
Olfactory Sensory Testing (OST)
Try to incorporate all of the oils that receive a 6 or
higher into the custom blend.
When working with physical concerns, it is not as
important to conduct OST as with emotional concerns.
Blending Techniques
Line up the oils from most liked to least liked.
This will better assist you in creating a formula.
You will have more drops of the most liked oils vs. the
least liked oils.
Write down your formula and blend it.
Formula for Blending
3-2-1 (Larissa Jones)
3 top note, 2 middle note and 1 base note
3 Bergamot, 2 Lavender and 1 Frankincense
Purpose of the blend will determine the # of drops
you include in a formula.
Art of Blending
Notes: layers of smell
Top Note: (3 drops)
Middle Note: (2 drops)
More stable, scent unfolds 1 minute – 3 hrs. after application.
Blends out a softer tone.
Soothing and balancing to the body.
Base Note: (1 drop)
Most pungent and volatile,
Vaporize quickly, last less than 30 minutes.
Generally uplifting.
Least volatile, fixative, holds blends together longer.
Heavier, thicker, deep, warm, sensuous.
Generally relaxing.
3:2:1 Guideline
3 drops of a top note to 2 drops of a middle note to 1 drop of a base note
Example: 3 drops lemon / 2 drops geranium / 1 drop frankincense

Applications for Essential Oils
Diffuse in the air
Aroma ball
Nebulizing Diffuser
Spray – room, body, deodorant
Roll-on – specific area, perfume, temples
Bath Salt – body and mind
Massage or Bath Oil – for skin and scalp
Application Methods
Inhalation: this produces an immediate effect.
Diffuser, Cotton ball, pine cones, potpourri, Room Spray
Topical: To stimulate circulation and help with specific physical
concerns (massage oil or lotion).
Compress: Helps reduce fever, swelling, sprains, bruises, tense muscles
Bath: Do not apply essential oils directly into bath water. Essential oils
are not water soluble and will not dissolve in water. Dilute essential
oils in bath salts or massage oil before adding to the bath water. Good
for relaxation, stimulation and circulation.
Perfume: create a mixture of chemical-free scents to help you feel and
smell good.
Where do you begin?
“It is still confusing and
I don’t feel good!”

Testimonial from fellow oil user
“Some of you may remember my posts on my
daughter's blood disease, ITP (immune
thrombocytopenia). Her blood platelet levels have
been dangerously low. Dipping as low as 5,000 at one
point (a normal range would be anywhere from
150,000-400,000). I had many suggestions on what
oils/ supplements to use, and settled on using thieves,
immupower, exodus ll, frank and rehemogen.
Just after 2 days, her blood platelet levels went up to
55,000. After a month, she is at a normal level of
153,000!!! We are so thrilled! Just wanted to share!”
