Saturday 5—
Monday 7 April 2014
Mandjar, the 2014 National Lay Preachers’
Conference, is a weekend of music, prayer and
ideas to support and encourage volunteers,
worship leaders and lay preachers in faith
communities.
Organised around the theme One Calling, Many
Expressions, the conference celebrates the
ministries that lay people are called to as well as
the diversity of ways in which God meets us in
our communities.
Highlights
Starting at 9am on Saturday, 5 April, let your
spirit feast on quiet reflection and stimulating
presentations. Stir your mind and heart with
community worship in the many languages of
Australia. Fill up with loads of resources to help in
worship, preaching and small group study. Party on
Saturday night with a 12-piece dance band. Join the
national meeting of Uniting Church Lay Preachers on
Sunday for the latest on the ministry of Lay Preacher
as well as issues facing Assembly 2015. Spend Monday
on a retreat thinking about where God might be
calling each one of us as we move into the future.
Presenters
Nancy Ault:
Landscape of the Soul
Explore the landscape of the soul using
a distinctly Christian understanding of
a mysticism of everyday. At the centre
of this transformational encounter
with God is our grounding in Christ.
Dr Nancy Ault is a member of the formation team at
the Perth Theological Hall, director for Supervised
Theological field education, and senior lecturer in
Practical Theology at Murdoch University.
Bill Loader:
Same-Sex Relations: Listening to First
Century Voices
Liking what is said or not, listening
comes first, and then we work out
what we think and do. Bill opens up
what people in the world of the New
Testament thought and what the New Testament
itself says about this delicate matter. Emeritus
Professor Bill Loader is a Uniting Church Minister,
and the leading specialist in the investigation of
ancient attitudes towards sexuality. His work has
been valued by people on all sides of the debate as
providing a sound foundation for discussion.
Geoffrey Lilburne:
What Mission? – What Next?
We’ve heard many experts over the
last twenty years, but what sense do
we make of God’s mission today?
Rev Dr Geoffrey Lilburne will lead a
discussion on what we’ve been told
in the past and the fresh and timeless ways we are
called to live and serve. Formerly WA director of Lay
and Continuing Education, Geoffrey is now lecturer
in Practical Theology at Murdoch University.
Ian Tozer:
Cultivating Inspiration for Preaching
Generating ideas and images are
key elements in preaching. This
session considers how to cultivate
inspiration in order to enrich
sermons. Rev Dr Ian Tozer served
rural, suburban and central city congregations in
Perth and Adelaide, and completed his doctorate in
preaching in the USA with Prof Tom Troeger. After
having served as joint associate general secretary
(pastoral), Ian is now associate general secretary
(education) in WA.
