Pennoweth Weekly
Spring Term - Week 27
Website www.pennoweth.cornwall.sch.uk
Friday 22nd April 2016
This week has been an incredibly busy week. I began on a wonderfully sunny, Sunday afternoon at the Mennaye
Stadium in Penzance where Pennoweth Tag Rugby Team were invited to be the half time entertainment for the
crowd watching Cornish Pirates V London Welsh. We played in a match with Trewirgie School and took part in a
highly entertaining 'friendly'. The whole experience was tremendous and the children were very excited and
slightly nervous about playing in front of a crowd of 3000. We travelled down to Penzance in our school mini bus,
parked it in a prominent position to catch people's attention and proudly walked into the stadium. Our children
were so well behaved and a credit to the school and to you, as parents too. Well done. Have a look at the Cornish
Pirates website for more photos of the team and Sam (our Pirates mascot for the day).
I'm sure many of you will have heard about the Key Stage 1 spelling fiasco on the news. For those that have not, it
seems as though the Year 2 spelling paper the children were due to sit in the next few weeks had been put onto
the national testing website for parents and schools to use to prepare children for these tests. Obviously this is a
huge mistake but rest assured the school will continue to ensure the children are supported through this
challenging time of testing, sensitively and sensibly despite the chaos the mistake has caused. Fingers crossed the
Standards Testing Agency have not made any further errors.
We hosted a hockey tournament on the new sports pitch on Wednesday. Redruth School had sent out invites to all
the local schools but Treleigh and Pennoweth were the only two school to show an interest. Pennoweth fielded
two teams with Pennoweth A team winning and beating Treleigh by four goals to nil. This now qualifies us for the
Peninsula Finals at Penair School next Friday afternoon. Once again the teams played exceptionally well and were a
credit to the school. Spectators from classes in the upper school had to chance to come along and watch too and
hopefully be inspired to get involved in after school sport.

On Wednesday afternoon, class 4/5KN and class
5/6DS took part in a Skype call to Monsieur Salim
(Mrs Houghton’s uncle - photographed) who lives
in Mauritius. This was a fantastic opportunity for
children to ask questions about for children to ask
questions about another commonwealth country,
as part of their topic learning, including the languages spoken, climate, landscape, religion,
currency and much more”! If your child is in either
of these classes, perhaps you could ask them what
facts they learned. All children (and staff!) enjoyed
the experience. Ruby, in class 4/5KN said “I wasn’t
expecting to see him, it was really cool”.
Thank you to Mrs Houghton for helping
to organise.
A huge thank you to everybody who very kindly donated and bought
cakes at our cake sale on Monday.
The cakes looked and tasted amazing and raised a total of £161.75!
RedYouth have very kindly made the total donation up to £200.00
for the RNLI.
Next Friday, our school council, eco council and some RedYouth
dancers will be going to the RNLI station in St.Ives to present
them with a cheque.
Here is our rugby team to
who took part in the
game against Trewirgie
School at the
Cornish Pirates game last
Sunday.
