If you live in Cornwall you should not have to travel for more than 30 miles to get to your nearest class. On the next page you will find a list of classes for this academic year. Good news for Bude On 5th August MAGA was in North Cornwall running a stall at Bude Stratton Heritage Day. We have been at this event for several years now, because it’s important to work with all areas of Cornwall, and this year was a particularly successful one. We sold some books and spoke to lots of people, but the greatest success was that we collected a list of twelve people (including the Mayoress of Bude!) who were interested in attending the new class starting in Bude this autumn. The area around Bude has been the only place in Cornwall to be without a class under 30 minutes drive away, so we were delighted when teacher, Jerry Jefferies, offered to start up a class in the town. It was then just a case of finding sufficient numbers of students. But with the list of twelve names together with five people who had already expressed an interest in attending a class in Bude, there are now plenty of people for the new class to go ahead. Many thanks to Lou, Peter, Leila, Jaqi and Philippa for their help on the stall. With wonderful people like you, Bude could become a stronghold for the language in the future. If you would be interested in attending the new class in Bude, contact Jerry Jefferies on 07929 859604 or at [email protected]. In July, the annual Celtic Congress was held in Guingamp in Brittany. Each year the Congress includes a number of lectures delivered on a different theme. The weekend was held at High School Truro for the second time last month. There were only ten students (with five tutors) but this brilliant group chatted in Cornish without any problems. In our midst there was an early-years lecturer, a primary school teacher, a secondary school teacher and a university lecturer so the lessons had to be good. The emphasis was on speaking and listening and this was expertly delivered by Maureen Pierce, Ray Chubb and Rod Lyon – thank you for your good work. The accommodation was very good as well with a large individual en suite bedroom for everyone. The food was so good that one person said that this was the first Pennseythen Gernewek gourmet! Some people joined us just for the Saturday night where there was a yeth an werin with communal singing and many games of Pictionary. Personally to my mind the best thing was to know that the language has a splendid future with these talented up and coming speakers. There were also hands-on activities where the children could learn about vegetables and what they are called in Cornish. Despite very wet weather, the weekend attracted huge crowds of just under 8,000 visitors across the two days, and it was a great opportunity to talk to parents as well as to engage with the little ones.
