the chance to become more fluent in
Cornish. Places are limited and you
will need to act fast if you would like to
attend this second weekend.
From Friday 31st October 2014 –
Sunday 2nd November, MAGA will
be running Tregedna East at the YHA
Boswinger near St Austell for Cornish
speakers around a 3rd/4th grade level.
The cost for the full weekend is £66.00
and includes all accommodation,
meals and tuition fees. There are also
rates available on the booking form
if you would prefer to attend as a day
visitor. Please note that most of the
accommodation will involve sharing,
with separate male and female rooms.

There are better opportunities to listen to Cornish on
the radio these days.
Firstly, as we all know, Elizabeth Stewart does ‘An
Nowodhow’ on BBC Radio Cornwall every Sunday at
5pm. However, now the language comes to the radio in
St Austell, Falmouth and Penryn.
Radyo an Gernewegva is being broadcast on Radio
St Austell Bay every Sunday at midday. Moreover,
TheSource FM (Falmouth/Penryn) is broadcasting
the same programme every Tuesday at 1pm in the
afternoon.
The programme itself continues online too and one can
find the website at www.anradyo.com.

device, there is a new page on the website to learn how
to do this.

launched at Trelissick House on Wednesday, 9 April.

Described as ‘…a richly illustrated double-sided folded
map showing the wonderful tapestry of the human and
natural environment…’ the map is a ‘one stop shop’ for
a variety of existing and new information which can be
used by both residents and visitors.
MAGA provided advice on historical events, translations
for contributors and a dedicated panel on Cornish.
Julian German, the Council’s Cabinet Member for
Economy and Culture also welcomes the development
of the map; "It’s fantastic to see the Cornish language
integrated into the map and the historical timeline
which shows our cultural origins and heritage."

AberFest started out as a simple act of remembrance
when friends of Ronnie Williams came from Brittany
to Falmouth at Easter shortly after Ron died.

A special friendship with the Bretons had been forged
over many years prior to his death in 2002. Since then
musicians, dancers, singers and friends have travelled
to and fro each Easter between Brittany and Cornwall
resulting in this amazing festival of friendship.
As in previous years, the festival provided the perfect
opportunity to use and hear Cornish and Breton in
everyday conversation alongside the more familiar
French and English. There was terrific weather on
Saturday 19th April where a procession through
Falmouth was followed by song and dance groups
performing at various pubs on Custom House Quay.
Other events were held over the Duchy over the
weekend providing further opportunities for impromptu
singing and conversing in our respective languages.

The MAGA website is changing! We have looked at
how people use the website, and as a result we are
consolidating some pages.
We found that the “Playing Place” section was the least
used part of the website and so we have found all of the
Cornish language publications (like the phrasebook,
Placenames in SWF, etc) from different parts of the
website and gathered them all into one place. Now
“Playing Place” has been renamed as our “Resources”
section. It now includes both our own publications, and
those of other organisations.
There is also a media option where you can find links to
the Cornish language online, on radio and in magazines!
All parts of the website are under review and we will
keep you informed of further changes.

The third annual conference of the Institute of
Cornish Studies will take place on the 24th and 25th
October at Tremough, Penryn and will focus on the
theme of Cornwall’s global connections.
Topics to be discussed include the history and
contemporary culture of the Cornish overseas,
comparative studies of the other Celtic nations with a
particular emphasis on Brittany, cultural and economic
links with communities around the world, global
achievements of individuals with Cornish connections,
the impact of global factors on Cornwall like world war,
economic depression and environmental change, and
theoretical perspectives including the relationship of
Cornish Studies to wider disciplines.
If you are interested in giving a presentation of your
work at the conference please send an abstract of about
200 words to [email protected] by 15th July
2014. Talks will be roughly 20 minutes with up to 10
minutes for discussion.
The conference will also include a themed research
strand on Cornwall’s relationship with Brittany with the
support of the CRBC (Centre de Recherche Bretonne
et Celtique) and BMA (Bretagne Monde Anglophone).
Conference organisers would also like to hear from
community heritage organisations in Cornwall who
would like to promote their activities and from Cornish
groups overseas who might be interested in being
involved via Skype and in organising any related events.

The Patron Saint of Scouting is St George and Scouts
all over the world come together on the 23rd April
each year or the closest Sunday.
This year the Falmouth and District’s annual St George's
Day parade was hosted by 1st Mylor Scout Group.
Scouts from all over Falmouth came to Mylor Scout Hut
where they then Paraded through Mylor village with
flags flying.
The service was hosted by Mylor Methodist church
which was filled to capacity. During the Service one of
the Mylor Scouts, Ali Mantle read a verse in Cornish,
the first to be heard in church or in Cornish Scouting for
many years.

The Aggie Boys Choir came second in the Pan Celtic
International Song Contest, recently held in Derry,
Ireland.
The Aggie Boys Choir won ‘Kan Rag Kernow’ back in
January for the chance to represent Cornwall’s language
and culture at the Pan Celtic Festival with their song
“Meur ras Kernow”. This was the first time Aggie Boys

Choir had represented Cornwall internationally, and
they were narrowly beaten for the first place by a strong
entry from the Isle of Man.

All entries to the Pan Celtic Song Contest must be sung
in the Celtic language of the country they represent,
and MAGA, the Cornish Language Partnership, offered
help with writing lyrics in Cornish to people who were
interested in entering a song to the competition.
Pan Celtic Festival president, Cornishman Dave Crewes
said:
“The Aggie Boys Choir were the best ambassadors for
Cornwall. We met a lot of ministers and international
representatives who appreciated Cornwall’s
participation and our high standards. We want this
to continue next year with strong songs and great
performances.”
Sam Stephens of the Aggie Boys said:
“We were absolutely thrilled to have the chance to
go to Ireland and represent Cornwall but never in a
million years did we expect to do as well as we did.
Second place was like coming first for us and we
certainly celebrated it well enough we made lots of
friends with all the Celtic nations!”
The Kan Rag Kernow rules have changed, and so
performers inspired to enter the 2015 competition need
to contact MAGA now for a new application pack.
