Serving the Rainy River District for over 24 years! Read us on line at www.westendweekly.ca. Check out the pictures on line. They are so good!
The first day of the rest of their lives
Chrissy Andy and Claryssa Mourisseau were naturally
pretty thrilled about entering the 3rd grade.
How's Maverick adjusting to SK? You could say he's hanging in there.
Ryan and Riley Ahrens were very cordial when they saw me,
even shaking my hand when they introduced themselves.
Cassanda Armstrong and Aubrey Johnson shared the teeter
totter with their friend before he noticed me and ran away.
Fire department to the rescue! These kids were fixing the
fire truck and chasing all the bad guys away.
Liam came cruising down the slide before doing a slight
summersault at my feet.
Payton waited for the line to clear up for the slide before finally deciding she would carefully climb down and try something else.
Big sister Harlow Perrault held Chiles's hand and showed
her all her favourite things to do at recess.
Brothers Bryce and Boady met up for a quick pep talk before heading off to their own classes.
Lorelai, Ainsley, and Jona are coat rack buddies and will inevitably spend hours together getting ready over the school
year.
Cedrick Cyrus, Chucky, and "Evan Rino Ray Coran" entertained the table with their snack time selections.
One of the best things these kids will receive are friendships
that will last for years to come.
by Melissa Friesen
I was buzzed into St.
Michael's School shortly
after 10 am on Tuesday
morning. This is the first
day of the school year for
all students in the Northwest Catholic District
School Board and Rainy
River District School
Board. This is the first of
many first days of school
for the youngest of the
bunch. The next 12 or so
years of their life will be
significantly shaped and
tested by what happens on
this property.
The Early Years kids had
been briefed on rudimentary procedures, such as lining up and raising hands
but, it's undeniably hard to
contain the whims of 30+
little ones. I walked into
what I'll call 'organized
chaos'. If you're a parent,
you can quickly recall the
coat roam scene: backpack
collisions and shoes with
untied laces and the tall
order of getting kids to create a single file line. But
these teachers are up to the
challenge, with big smiles
and soft voices and patience
for miles.
They were lining up for
recess when I got there, so
naturally emotions were at
an all time high. There were
tears, and squeals, and
proclamations of superhero
strength. Once released into
the spacious playground,
the kids let their true
colours show. Some walked
slowly and unsure, taking in
their surrounding with calculated steps and a silent
wish for their mom's hand.
Others bolted to the monkey bars with great abandon
and zero caution.
It's the great marketplace.
Kids in their first years of
school will learn the currency of friendship, kindness and team work. They'll
be told to say 'please' every
time they ask for something, which is often. The
teachers will bend over to
help with shoes and see
rock collections and pick up
cracker crumbs 1,000 times
before we hit Christmas. By
then, school will become
routine for these young
ones, but for now, it's brand
new and totally scary (and
awesome).
The energy in the room at
snack time is the kind that
makes your heart want to
burst into enough pieces to
be given out equally. "Yes,
I'll open your container of
grapes!" "Yes, tell me how
you think oatmeal cookies
are the very best!" "Who
put those clips in your hair?
They're so cute!" I found
myself rushing to help kids
with all the finicky elements of having a successful snack. There seem to be
endless obstacles between
coming in for recess and
zipping up lunch boxes. A
teacher's best hope is that he
or she can remember all the
students' names. Otherwise,
good luck.
Snack time is all chaos and
cheese strings and cool
lunch boxes. It's comparing
apples to oranges and ham
sandwiches to left over
pizza. It's like having thirty
5 year olds over for dinner.
One hopes she could morph
an octopus for just a few
moments to possibly reach
everyone in need of assistance. Straws refuse to find
their way out of their plastic
packaging without the
knowing hands of an adult.
Pudding cups, yogurt tubes,
plastic baggies, and water
bottles all have the same
vault-like effect: locked
down and only accessible
with an adult's magic touch.
It's entirely precious, but
spills happen and the persistent call for 'Teacher, teacher,
teacher!' can drain the
'magic' right out of a person.
I spent less than an hour
with these little ones and my
appreciation for teachers
once again grew. How do
Aubree, Hudson and friends opted to sit on the blanket for a
picnic style snack time.
these educators do it? Every
day? Where is the limit to
their capacity for helping little ones? Does it run out
every Friday? Every day at
3 pm? I can only hope they
are rewarded in the tenfold
in the small graces of small
hands and hearts. The soft
whispers of 'thank you's and
big eyes of sheer wonder
when it's least expected. I
can only hope that this year,
teachers will marvel again at
the gift of education for all.
That imaginations will roam
freely and songs will be
sung from tiny lungs with
gusto whether O Canada or
The Eensy Weensy Spider.
From all the residents of
the Rainy River District to
all the students from Early
Years to 12th grade, we hope
for your success and we support your continued learning. (Just don't ask us to help
you with your homework.

Wow! Last day of August…
.where did our summer go?
My students were finished at
EARS on Friday and I find
that such a sad time. I spend
more time with my students
that anyone else and as much
as I am happy for them to return to school and enjoy what
is likely the best times of their
lives I find it such a lonely
time for me at EARS. I have
said so many times that I
spend a great deal of time with
students in their 20’s that I forget that I am in my 40’s.
Thanks to Nick and Destiny
for another great summer and
I am also unsure that they will
be returning since they are
likely going to find jobs more
career related next summer.
Once the weather changed for
us last week we were busy on
the combine – but the hours
are shorter since we have to
wait for the dew to leave us
before we can get out there.
Excluding the soybeans – we
are down to only 3 more tri-
als….
And because the
weather kept us off the land –
we have tackled some of the
seed cleaning as well so that is
somewhat of a bonus. I like
the fact that the students were
able to see some of the trials
all the way through – from
planting to harvest to cleaning
and all the data that goes along
with that. This isn’t always
the case! They maybe didn’t
think they were so fortunate
when we were dirty and
sweaty for combining.
Well after combining our
largest trial (of wheat) last
Thursday – I rushed home and
packed up all 6 fair animals
and headed up to Dryden. The
girls worked their magic and
we were off to the Dryden
Fair. The girls were excited to
show off their animals to their
Dryden family and friends.
The animals were a bit cranky
for the fair on Friday but we
managed to get through it all
without much difficulty. Marlee’s yearling won the JackPot

was only fair that we should

Marlee
thought otherwise and there
was a bit of drama with this
discussion. We ended up tossing in all the money that we
won and dividing it 3 ways –
even though Marlee didn’t
think this was very fair since it
was her heifer and she is saving to buy Daddy a new boat.
I left the Dryden Fair (and
my cattle) on Saturday morning so I could get home for the
Cattle Sale. It is certainly not
that I think the Sale won’t run
without me – but guilt sets in
and I felt that I should be there
helping. My friend Ted drove
me
home
and
my
boyfriend/partner drove my
cow’s home later. All was fine
– other than Maddie’s very
docile Hereford heifer stepped
on his toe and he was hobbling
around when I got home. As I
arrived in Stratton they had
sold the last animals. It was a
smaller sale but it was a good
one! 464 animals – fetched
$902, 534.67! I think the producers that sold were pleased.
The next sale is October 3rd
and it is looking to be a big
one.
I already mentioned this in
an earlier Moos – but some
missed the winners of the
Rainy River Hereford Association “Guess the Weight” on
the Hereford Heifer at the Emo
Fair were Tracy Hyatt, Ken
McKinnon and Clayton
Teeple. All 3 of these farm
people guessed the exact
weight at 1090. Patrick Blackwell from Kenora won the
Beef Package and he will be
enjoying some great “Rainy
River Raised” beef. The
Rainy River Hereford Association is not sure if they will be
continuing this in the future
since it is becoming harder and
harder to find the help for this
little undertaking.
Hope everyone can get out
enjoy what is looking to be a
nice warm week!

Lieutenant-Governor gets a
Grand Tour of the Town
by Melissa Friesen
Ontario's 29th LieutenantGovernor, Emily Dowdeswell,
came for a visit to Fort Frances
last Wednesday. She made a
stop here as well as Kenora,
Dryden, and Thunder Bay on
her Northwestern Ontario tour.
"It was a fantastic day. We
took her to every area that I
can think of in town," said
June Caul, who had the privilege of being the Lt. Governor's tour guide for the day.
"We stopped by the Rainy
Lake hotel and the museum
and explained what was happening with those situations.
We went to The Point and into
Couchiching, and we were at
the arena for a little tour." June
replayed the day's highlights
for me, with one in particular
that she believes was the Lt.
Governor's favourite. "We
took her into the library and
technology centre. She was so
impressed with the staff and
the programming that goes on
in there. She talked, and
talked, and talked to Alicia
[Subnaik-Kilgour]." Since sustainability, and its intersection
with art, literature, and history, is a personal interest of
the Lt. Governor's, it's no wonder that she found the library
and technology centre to be an
integral part of the community.
"She's very involved with the
environmental issues. She really believes in saving our resources and our environment.
It was neat for me to be able to
talk to her about how we're
doing that and fill her in on
things that are happening
around here." That included a
tour and talk at the Fifth Street
recycling area.
Drivers are reminded children
are heading back to school
With the last of the summers
weekend only days away, the
Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) are reminding drivers to
stay focused on the task of driving!
With children heading back to
school soon within the Rainy
River District, distracted driving is of particular concern to
the OPP as distraction-related
collisions in OPP jurisdiction
continue to rise. According to
the OPP, everyone travelling on
roads and highways should be
equally concerned about this
alarming trend.
This week, school buses are
already returning to our roadways in preparation for the start
of a new school year. Motorists
should be taking extra care and
be aware of school buses travelling their routes and begin to
watch for students who are biking and walking to school areas.
Zero tolerance is the expected
response when officers observe
drivers who fail to stop for
school buses when red lights
are flashing and those who continue to talk and/or text on their
cellular devices.
Stopping for a school bus You must stop whenever you
approach a stopped school bus
with its upper alternating red
lights flashing, regardless of
whether you are behind the bus
or approaching it from the
front. It is illegal to fail to stop
for a stopped school bus that
has its red lights flashing. If you
don't stop, you can be fined
$400 to $2,000 and get six demerit points for a first offence.
If you are convicted a second
time within five years, the
penalty is a fine of $1,000 to
$4,000 and six demerit points.
Hand held communication devices - Ontario’s law makes it
illegal for drivers to talk, text,
type, dial or email using handheld cell phones and other
hand-held communications and
entertainment devices. Drivers
caught using a hand-held device
will face a set fine of $225 plus
a victim surcharge and court
fees for a total of $280. Drivers
who challenge the ticket in
court face fines of up to $500.

Lest We Forget
June Caul could do nothing
but rave about what a kind and
considerate woman the Lieutenant-Governor was.
Although they had a long day,
with many places and people
to see, she was never too impatient to listen to voices of
the community. "She was a
very special lady. She really
listens to you and it makes you
really feel that she cares. For
her to come all the way up to
Northwestern Ontario and tour
all our communities and care
about what's going on here
means a lot."
Aside from the numerous
sites she saw, Lt. Governor
Emily Dowdeswell had a particular compliment for the
town as a whole. "She was
impressed that everyone was
so friendly. That was one of
the big things. We're always
told by people who visit this
area how friendly the people
are." Shining perhaps even
more brilliantly than smiles
was the apparent determination for progress. "[She saw]
the fact that we are really
moving ahead in this little
community, despite all our
trouble with the mill closing,
and those kinds of things. She
was glad to see that we're still
trying to do the best we can
and move on and find new adventures in life for this town."
While Fort Frances will become a distant memory for the
Lieutenant-Governor soon
enough, for June Caul, it was
a rewarding experience she's
not soon to forget. As an unofficial part of the tour, June
was able to share some background stories to the various
parts of town. It was the highlight of the day for June.
"[I liked] riding in the van
with her and just talking as we
toured the town because I've
lived here all my life so I was
able to do that and give her a
little bit of history. To have
that one on one conversation
was really special."
But no tour of Fort Frances
would really be complete
without a stop at the Sorting
Gap Marina. "She even bought
us ice cream! We sat on the
waterfront-it's so beautiful
there-visiting and having our
ice cream. . . It was a very laid
back day."
June was filling in for Mayor
Avis while he was away. In his
absence she acted as Deputy
Mayor. When we talked about
the coincidental timing of her
responsibilities she couldn't
have been happier. "It wasn't
a job, it was a pleasure."

They sat in a long row up close
these big-eyed and clumsy

longest running streak of highest bid? I was curious and ignorant and frankly too afraid
to slide down to the person sitting next to me and ask my
most pressing questions.
I watched the amalgamation
of generations spread across
the stands. Grandpas pointed
things out to their littlest kinfolk. Young boys ran to their
seats with hot and early lunch
from the barn's kitchen cupped
in their hands and encased in
crinkly tin foil. Men sat
hunched over and others with
their arms folded tightly across
their chest.
To them, everything about
this was familiar, even the
smell. And for that reason I felt
like I was in the company of
great legacy. I couldn't tell
you anything about what a
good udder looks like, or the
most delicious body composition, or the differences between a Charolais versus a
Hereford. But there were seats
full of people who could, as if
those were the most simple
questions in the world.
And yet, after nearly 2 hours
of sitting and not even being
close to finishing, I tipped my
hat, metaphorically, and left
the sales barn. I felt defeated
and uncomfortable, and
stuffed my bag with children's
activity books on the way out
to learn more. As I walked to
my car I saw a child standing
outside next to the pens and
actually turned around to approach him before I realized
"Mmm, no." I called the sales
barn manager enough times
that he probably thinks I'm
stalking him, but I never got
the chance to speak to him.
So I was stuck with a definite
lack of story. Over the past few
days I've been trying to casually bring up the topic of cattle
auctions to try and hang on to
any tidbit someone might
offer. But it didn't really work.
So this is what I learned: 1.
Go somewhere you don't 'belong'. You'll feel weird and
that's okay. 2. Observe everything and appreciate what you
can. 3. Talk to someone! Risk
sounding like a city slicker (or
whatever). 4. Maybe wait until
you've got a good grasp on the
subject before you write an article for the paper. Or not.

Re-painting and remembering history
by Melissa Friesen
As I walked past the CIBC
bank last Thursday and waited
for the crosswalk sign to
change, I turned my head to
notice someone re-painting
the building's west side wall.
"E.W. Backus & Company",
or 'the mural', as it will be referenced from henceforth in
this article, is a tribute to the
innovative thinking of Edward
Willington Backus from Minnesota. In the early 1900s,
Backus had a vision for how
to harness the energy of the
falls to run two paper mills on
either side of the U.S./Canada
border. The artist is Brian Ro-
magnoli, who is busy repairing
and re-envisioning the piece
he created 16 years ago.
As far as redoing the work,
it's a little bit like starting from
scratch. "By memory, and
then I improvise after that.
Whatever colours I have in my
palette I start mixing." He had
a few of the original colours in
collection, including 'harvest
gold' which is the colour of the
mill building on the mural.
When I ask him if he gets the
privilege of revisiting his work
often he jokes, "Yeah, every
16 years!" In all reality, he admits this particular mural has
held up well with only a few
paint chips and some fading
colour. "I'm revisiting a few
things here and there where
I'm second guessing the
colours I used." So if you have
a keen memory for what the
mural originally looked like,
you might notice some
changes.
To create a full scale mural
from a sample, he uses the old
grind method that the 'masters'
were fond of. The original
mural took him much longer
than anticipated to finish. He
was interrupted by another engagement and then. . . two
weeks of rain. "I was held up
in the Rainy Lake hotel and
Emo Hospital fish fry
Sunday afternoon family, friends, staff and residents of the Emo Hospital Long Term Care
Ward enjoyed a feast of fish and delectable pot luck dishes at the annual fish fry. Melanie
Soucy, pictured above, bringing in more goodies brought by family and friends. Playing before supper were Morris Halverson from Nestor Falls, Bob Wepruk from Fort Frances,
Charleen Gustafson and Mary Curits.
went out every morning at
7:45 and 'drip, drip, drip'. It
was really frustrating." He
passed the time by meeting
with local residents and making friends: getting a taste of
what the town was really like
beyond its historical upbringing.
"Every mural has its points of
contention," says Romagnoli,
but there are fond memories
because of it, thanks to people
like the late Bill Fontana who
met him every morning for
coffee. It was also people like
Viola Plumridge (of Fine Line
Art Gallery) who helped him
finish the project on time all
those years ago. It was early
November, and she climbed on
the scaffolding half way up to
fill in the colours near the dam
portion of the mural. They had
their reunion, but this time, at
the age of 80, she politely refused to join him on the lift.
In his line of work, the physical demands are just part of
the nature of the job. Standing
all day, which he says doesn't
bother him, at great heights
and in all kinds of weather isn't
considered easy work. But he's
been painting the walls of
buildings since he got his first
job as a house painter. He's
held a few paint brushes since
then.
A list of his work is long and
impressive, including the
mural painting celebrating
"500 Years of Royal Canada",
given to Queen Elizabeth in
1997. While he admits he
Sis (Cecile) McComb said, "This is an excellent opportunity to get together and give us a
chance to thank the staff here. They are wonderful. They treat us like family, except, they
don't slap our hands!" You can always count on Sis to bring up the mood, although at the
fish fry there was a happy buzz everywhere already. Sis, on the left always finds the happy
side of everything. She and Charlotte Haines, her nephew's wife, are ready to enjoy the
feast. "I try to remember to be happy about what I have and forget about the rest," is Sis's
philosophy.
would enjoy mixing his career
with some teaching, he is fixated on the whole process of
preserving history through art.
"History is very important. Fort
Frances has a history." He spent
time at the museum last week,
comparing notes with the curator about the struggle to get the
public to cherish history. In that
sense as well, it's a hard trade.
People don't always appreciate
the presence of art, at least not
enough to fund it. When I ask
him if he'd like to see more murals, his face lit up. "I see some
empty walls over there!"
This particular mural was
funded by FedNor and the
Business Improvement Area
for Fort Frances. The group
meets to decide how to better
improve the downtown. He's
grateful for these kinds of
groups that come together to
honour history and put it at the
forefront of the town - for residents and tourists alike. "People are needed to champion
these type of art and restoration
projects." He sighed as he
mused about the Rainy Lake
Hotel and its likely non-existent future. He asserts that people will come back and stay a
little longer to a community
that has a noticeable depth.
From his perspective, art and
history are integral to the town.
"There's value in it."
And then he walks me
through the mural, pointing at
each pivotal point in the story
on the wall. It is his story. It is
the town's story. In the purpose-
ful colouring which brings to
life the events of a hundred
years ago, a special link is
formed between artist and
local history: the energy, the
turbines, and the transformation from timber to pulp and
paper. The quoins of the building create a natural dividing
line between an idea and an industry.
I wonder out loud how a
mural comes to be. Does he get
a sketch or a layout from the
town or corporation commissioning him? In fact, no.
"Nothing."Nothing?! He
laughs at my surprise. "Just a
few archival photos if I'm
lucky. In this case they sent me
a package with the background
of Edward W. Backus and I researched him and mills in the
area and how they came to be,
and how important it was to the
local economy." It was drawn
by hand, outlined in its entirety,
and then blocked in colour by
colour.
I asked him what it's like to
paint a scene that doesn't really
exist anymore. "All the more
important because it gives
older people some nostalgia,
but it gives younger people
some understanding-visual understanding-of what industry
was like, what built the town
and who built the town!"
He'll also be restoring the
mural on Portage Avenue,
which is not his original work,
next week after he finishes this
project.

7. Why do you think people
Endless

should give church a try?
Our very weakness and idiosyncrasies that sometimes turn
people off from church are the
proof that, if this thing is still
going it's not because we're
doing such a great job at it. It's
because God is really doing a
work here in the midst of our
weaknesses and difficulties. If
you come to church expecting to
find perfect people who never
have bad days and have instantaneous solutions to every problem, you'll be disappointed. And
I think that's why a lot of people
are disappointed. But on the
other hand, if you come to
church looking for a reason to
have hope in the midst of difficulties . . . believing there is an
answer, I would say Christ is
the answer. It's not the church as
the church that has the answer.
But it's the church as the body of
people that Christ has forgiven
and is changing, helping to be
more loving and knowing what
true life is about. If you come
with that expectation, that in
finding Christ you'll find these
things, then that can be a good
reason to go church.
8. Do you have any ideas for
what you'd like to see happen in
the community or what you'd
like to be a part of in terms of
outreach?
Happy Birthday presents
for the Humane Society
by Diana Ashworth
We adopted our cat Salem from
the Humane Society three years
ago.
My Mom asked me if I wanted to
do that instead of getting presents.
I said yes I think that is a good idea.
I can’t remember what I got for my
birthday last year.
I wanted to help the Humane Society because they don’t get paid for
what they do.
Next year I want to help the elephants in Thailand.
I hope other kids will want to do
something like this as you only
have toys for awhile.
I felt really happy after I went to
the Humane Society. It felt really
good to help the animals.
Thank you to my friends and family for coming to my party and
bringing donations for the Humane
Society in Baudette. It made my
day and I was able to give them all
this food as well as some money.

Fishing Boats and Pontoons
of Fort Frances, assuming you're
here for a long time?
John the Baptist, when he was
preaching, made this comment,
'He must increase. I must decrease.' The danger when thinking about a legacy is wondering
what people will think about
you. I don't care if nobody remembers me, that's fine. My
name can fade into the sands of
history, but if there are churches,
and not just one church but a
family of churches in the area,
that all have found knowing
Christ to be the meaning of their
life and his promise of eternal
life to be the hope of everything
that they do, that could go a long
way to bless Northwestern Ontario for years to come: blessings
in peace and loving families and
the true knowledge of God.
Tyler welcomes anyone who
wants to chat to knock on his
door at Evangelical Fellowship
Church. His office hours are
Monday to Friday from early
morning until 5 or 6 pm when he
is not doing community outreach. If he's not there, call and
leave a message at 274-2328 or
leave a note. While Tyler didn't
grow up playing hockey, he's
not ruling out the possibility that
it might be a sport his son would
very much enjoy.
I'm still trying to get to know a
little bit about what's already
here in the community. There's
Loaves & Fishes kitchen at New
Beginnings Church for instance.
Definitely my wife and I are
looking forward to getting to
know couples with young kids.
My wife and I have one son and
another baby due in October. I
think one thing in particular,
ministry wise, is training young
men to grow up to be leaders in
the church. I think that is really
important in every generation,
and working with young people
in general. There's a lot of bad
things people can do to fill their
time when they are young and
bored.
9. What are your hobbies?
My wife and I both really like
cooking. We like to make things
from all over the world. So
some of our favourites are
Ethiopian dishes, which are very
spicy but delicious. My wife is
very good at baking precise
recipes. I do better with experimenting with spices. We like
reading books and playing and
listening to music. With a child
and moving to a new country,
neither of us are playing as much
as we'd like to.
10. What kind of legacy would
you like to leave with the town
