Ed McLeod checked out the display. He worked in the Woodlands Division for 37 years from 1959 to 1996. Bill Morrison Sr. and Ed Haglund shared a few laughs about their time at the mill, carrying the trademark lunch kits. John Rafferty, MP, stands by the wall of photos showing retirees from the Mill Doug MacDonald (standing) chatted with Al Smith who worked in the environmental department for 37 years. Doug worked with Sherry George to put together the history of the Mill as part of his work towards his Honours Thesis in the Bachelor of Arts Program at Lakehead University. His thesis is about the History of the Pulp and Paper Industry in Fort Frances. By: Teresa Hazel It was during the opening of the Fort Frances Museum’s summer exhibit, 100 Years of Logging, that the question, “Are there enough trees”, was asked and answered by 35year woodlands employee, Jim Krag. “People often questioned me, ‘will there be enough trees to get my mortgage paid off’, ‘will there be enough trees for me to get to retirement’”, recollected Krag during the opening remarks portion of the welcoming reception. “I have pride and confidence in the state of our forests”, reported Krag although admitted that it was the shift in markets due to the information age that decreased the need for the products that were being produced from the trees and ultimately led to the closure of the pulp and paper mill in Fort Frances. He thanked the museum for recognizing the importance of the forest industry to the area. Member of Parliament, John Rafferty spoke and also delivered a message from MP, Sarah Campbell. “It is important for me to be here in light of the events in the last couple of weeks”, said Rafferty who went on to say that it was a, “bittersweet event”. It is sad for workers and families and communities. Thirty eight thousand jobs have disappeared in the forest industry in Northern Ontario. We have called for a National Strategy on Forestry. We are battling for severances and pensions and we continue to fight on behalf of families”, noted Rafferty who also serves as the NDP Forestry critic. Rafferty also reflected on the commitment of workers to the local mill over the years. “A lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into the indus- Neil Whitefield is one of the few employees still working at Resolute who will be done in a “week or so”. He is the Pulp Superintendent and has worked at the mill since June 1977. “The exhibit is excellent. Well done. It’s very informative and brings back a lot of memories”, he said. From l. He extended sincere appreciation to the 100th Anniversary Committee, to the Friends of the Museum and to the Curator of the Museum, Sherry George. He spoke about the generations of families that have earned a living from the logging industry. He spoke about the sale of the Fort Frances Mill throughout the years and the period marking the end of the “glory days” when Boise Cascade Canada sold it. Mayor Avis also extended appreciation to the employees of the mill and logging industry. “We will bring Fort Frances back to the prosperity that we once enjoyed”, pledged Avis. “This is a celebration of the past, but we also have to look at the future”. Curator, Sherry George then wrapped up the remarks. “It’s hard to ignore the big elephant in the room”, noted George as to the announcement one week prior to the 100th anniversary of the mill opening, that it would be permanently closed. “I lost my own job with the mill in 2009”, said George From l. Margaret Rousseau (her dad, Ted Orton, worked at the Mill); Maxine Hayes (great grandfather , C.W. And yes; it is driving me crazy! I stopped in to EARS over the weekend and we were getting close – only to have rain again which will keep us off the land again for a couple of days. I am so disappointed with our late spring – it usually means we end up rushing around and that is when mistakes happen. As long as I have worked here (since 1988) – I have never been this late! I haven’t had everything planted by this date but at least I have been started. Even with the wet conditions we were still able to fence over the long weekend. It was actually pretty easy to put electric fence stakes in to our very saturated ground. The sheep were anxious to get out pasturing when they see me fencing near them but there isn’t enough growth to let them out yet. I am hoping things will grow this week and we can get them out of their yard. Normally the sheep yard doesn’t get that muddy but there is mud this year! Maddie and Marlee were out helping check fence and they did their share of work as well. They both now can put staples into the fence and picked brush off the edges of hay fields. All this is a huge treat since they get to 4Wheeler around the fence and fields. Since they worked so hard we did take the time to have some fun-time and we got the horse out, cleaned him up, trimmed his feet and took him for a ride. I am hoping the girls will take over caring for Office Closures Our Offices will be closed from May 27th - May 29th and will re-open Friday, May 30th. All Northwestern Health Unit staff will be attending the Do One Thing Conference. Water sample shipments will not be available during this time. In case of a Public Health Emergency please call 1-866-475-6505. Letter to the editor the horse soon since it seems there just isn’t enough time to spend much time with him and he would enjoy more attention – especially the attention of 2 little girls that seem to love horses. I hope everyone took the time to watch our local boys / girls star in Fool’s Gold. I am not a big TV fan but I truly enjoyed the episodes. I would far sooner watch that than most programs. Since I didn’t have the discovery channel I went and visited Tedder and Debber and we laughed out loud like we hadn’t in a long time! It was great entertainment and good job to the cast for getting us on the map! Looking forward to future episodes! A new regulation will require health and safety awareness training for Every worker and supervisor under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA.) The Red Pine and White Spruce seedlings have arrived at EARS. We still have plenty left to sell – at .25cents per tree. They are in bundles of 25 and we would prefer to get them bundled. Our hours are 8 a.m. till 4:45 p.m. Please keep in mind that if the weather is decent we will be on the land so coming at the beginning / end of the day or over lunch is greatly appreciated. In honour of each person’s battle against cancer, we invite you to attend the Survivors’ Reception and Dinner, and then take that celebratory lap around the track with others who have also been diagnosed with cancer at some time in their lives. Everyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer, whether years ago or very recently, is invited to be our guest at the dinner on Friday, June 6 at 5:00 p.m. We want to honour you at the Opening Ceremonies at 7:00 p.m. at the Riverview School track, which will be followed by the Survivors’ Victory Lap. We also invite you to stay for the beautiful and moving luminary cer- Please be informed that the Annual General Meeting of the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2013. 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Copper River Inn Meeting Room 700 Stewart Rd. We want as many survivors to attend as possible, and because we want to properly honour survivors and their caregivers, we need to register everyone prior to the event. Any cancer survivor who is reading this – please give us a call and let us know you are planning to attend the Relay for Life. We really feel passionately that the lives of other survivors make a difference to those who may be diagnosed at some point in the future. We know that more people are surviving cancer and the chance for them to come together and be recognized at events such as these sends an important message to our community. Cancer survivors show through their strength and courage that we are making great progress against this disease. The beds are only the beginning for the members; the LVGH Auxiliary continuously works hard on different projects supporting health care. “We do make a difference,” stated auxiliary member Helen Pattison, “All funds earned by our auxiliary are used at LaVerendrye Hospital.” The members were also able to raise the funds for a Primacare chair for the birthing room, and have recently made the final payment of $10,000 on their $60,000 pledge for the digital mammography machine. The Auxiliary is very thankful for all the support. “We want to thank our members and volunteers who work so diligently at fundraising events, and the entire community for supporting us in our endeavors,” enthused Helen. “Riverside is blessed with four auxiliaries that support each of our care sites in Emo, Rainy River, Rainycrest and the La Verendrye General Hospital,” said Allan Katz, Riverside’s president and chief executive officer. “Each auxiliary member at each site is an integral part of health care in our community and their important work does not go unnoticed. Page 5, The Westend Weekly, May 21, 2014 Harmony of Nations Festival set for July 18 and 19 Shannon Darby, Festival Coordinator By: Teresa Hazel Tickets will be going on sale soon for the first-ever Harmony of Nations Music Festival set for July 18 and 19 at the riverfront in Fort Frances. The Big Tent will be set up at the Sorting Gap Marina to accommodate the music and activities, which will feature headliners, musicians and artists from the United States, Canada, Metis and First Nations. The all-ages event will also include workshops with the artists from song writing to electronic looping and an opportunity to talk with the artists. The workshops will be included in the ticket price, which are set to go on sale at the end of May. There will be weekend or daily passes available reported Shannon Darby, who is organizing the event on behalf of the Rainy River Future Development Corporation and the Economic Develop Advisory Committee (Fort Frances). A group of about a dozen people from across the District are helping coordinate the twoday musical event that will also feature a beer gardens, food vendors and artisans. Canadian icon, Buffy SainteMarie has already been confirmed as the headliner for Saturday night with Friday night’s headliner promised soon. “It’s in the works”, smiled Darby as to who that will be. Sainte-Marie has created a successful, life-long career as a world-renown folk artist. Her songs have been recorded by Elvis, Barbara Streisand and Cher. She won an Oscar at the Academy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for the song, Up Where We Belong. In Canada, she has been inducted into the Juno Hall of Fame, Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, Canada Walk of Fame and has also become an Officer of the Order of Canada. Her most famous work, Universal Soldier, became the anthem of the peace movement and she is an advocate for Native American rights. She was a regular cast member of Sesame Street, has made 18 albums, appeared in three of her own television specials, and has earned twelve honorary doctorates. Joining Sainte-Marie in the lineup of artists so far includes folk-rock band, Cornshed who will be travelling from Vancouver with home-grown musicians, Andrew Mueller, Marc Lovisa and Andrew Marusyk. They are self-described as “high-energy, foot-stomping folk with the driving force of a punk band”. Thunder Bay award-winning artist, Shy-Anne Hovorka is also set to take the stage. ShyAnne is the recipient of multiple Aboriginal Peoples’ Choice Music Awards and this April released her new groundbreaking album, “Bones”. Local singer and songwriter, Larissa Desrosiers who has joined Hovorka on the stage will open for her at the festival. Young country music star and Metis fiddler, Sierra Noble is also scheduled to appear. Sierra’s wide breadth of experience has had her opening for Paul McCartney and Bon Jovi. She also performed at the 2010 Winter Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Vancouver and has performed for the Queen of England. Bands from around the region are also filling the roster, including singer and songwriter, Nick Sherman from Sioux Lookout who will be coming with his band, The Winterdark. Town of Rainy River Nick has been nominated for Best Folk/Acoustic CD and Best New Artist at the 2014 Aboriginal Peoples Choice Awards. Nick’s bandmate, Thunder Bay-based Jean-Paul De Roover will also take to the stage with his innovative solo approach to music using live looping of guitars and voice. Cross-border musicians will also be joining in the fun including the boot stompin’, toe tappin’ band, The Woodpicks, from Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Playing a mix of gospel, bluegrass, country and Americana music, this multitalented group features strong harmonies and musical style in originals and old favourites. There is also a Go Local twist with a call out for local musicians to perform. The cut-off for audition material was May 20th. Darby is getting excited about the festival. “I’m looking forward to it”, she enthused. “People really love the idea. The performers are keen to come to the event”, she added. Along with support from the Town of Fort Frances, Ontario Arts Council and private sponsors, the Harmony of Nations Festival was able to secure a matching grant from Celebrate Ontario in the amount of almost $74,000.00. The committee has also been working closely with the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship. “They have provided helpful guidance about site set-up”, said Darby adding that they will be sharing workloads to help with the success of both events during the last two weeks of July. To keep up-to-date on the lineup of activities and workshops, you can visit www.harmonyofnations.ca, Like them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. You can also contact Darby by phone at 807.274.9621 or email [email protected] . Mark your calendar for July 18 and 19th, call your friends, and bring the family to this festival of music that aims to unite artists and audiences from First Nations, Metis, Canadian and American communities.
