meeting. Registration information for the Annual Meeting will be available in early 2013. Cruise
information is available now. Click the read more button for complete details.

Chapter Happenings
Twin Cities Chapter - Liquid Paint Takes the Spotlight
The Twin Cities Chapter October meeting featured an update on
liquid painting accompanied by an outstanding Oktoberfest meal
of authentic German food selections. The overall topic for the
presentation was “What’s Driving the Change in the Liquid
Coating Market?”
DuWayne Roberts, Global Accounts Mgr. for PPG Industrial
Coatings led off with a presentation that included topics of liquid
and powder coating comparisons, current steel quality, custom
color coating on plastic substrates and environmental & energy
concerns. Michelle Striggow, Sr. Finishing Account Mgr.
representing Graco, Inc., followed with a presentation that covered paint transfer efficiency using
different types of spray applicators (electrostatic and non-electrostatic), measuring transfer efficiency
based on ASTM standards and application equipment for improved production and process.
The dinner meeting was held at a Minneapolis restaurant called Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit, which means
“house of good times & good feelings”, so you have to know the food was authentic German and very
good. In addition to the multi platters of German food, the group was treated by a Gasthof strolling &
singing accordion player. A special treat was when TC member Ted Schreyer, the President of AFI
(Mankato, MN custom coater) joined the accordion player with his tuba. Ted is an accomplished tuba
player, so his musical joint accompaniment was a big hit.
Overall, it was a major Zigi Zaga good time.
AZZ Galvanizing Plant Tour
The Iowa-Central Illinois chapter hosted a plant tour on November 1st at AZZ
Galvanizing. Twenty-nine people attended the event. On the tour attendees
witnessed the hot dip galvanizing process on a wide range
of parts. The process involves cleaning and preparing the
fully fabricated product then immersing it in a bath of
molten zinc. This creates a permanent, bonded,
corrosion-proof coating on the entire surface of the
metal. During dinner, Kevin Irving of AZZ Galvanizing
shared the benefits behind hot-dipped galvanizing and the science as to why these
benefits exist through the use of the many real world examples. It was a great event
with over 19 different companies represented!
ChemQuest Grand Opening in West Michigan
A number of West Michigan chapter members attended the
grand opening of ChemQuest's new building. ChemQuest was
founded in 1997 by longtime CCAI member Dave Scharphorn
and celebrated their move to a larger building due to growth
of the company. ChemQuest is a large West Michigan chapter
supporter and advertiser, and we appreciate them helping to
grow the West Michigan chapter. West Michigan Board
member, Dale Mulder gave a moving speech about Dave
Scharphorn and ChemQuest history.
