I hope that your Christmas was a good one and that Santa got you everything you asked for to help make your 2013 fishing season a success! Hopefully Santa dropped off a new rod & reel combo for you under your tree this Christmas! So much water to fish and so little time!!! As of this writing, once again our area lakes are still open! All of us are wondering “when’s the ice coming?” This seems to be the trend, ice is coming later & later in the year and going off earlier & earlier than in years past! Many of the children who are off for Christmas break have had to endure the lack of snow and ice and have opted for other indoor activities to pass the time instead of going tubing, snowboarding & ice fishing! As I write this column, the 1st winter storm is scheduled to hit tonight! The snow forecast is all over the map but one thing is certain, the wind will blow hard!! My snow blower is poised and ready to go & is sitting in my garage waiting for the storm to arrive! For those of us “chomping at the bit” to get out on the hard water and do some ice fishing; we’ll have to settle for traveling up North for the time being. That is until Mother Nature decides to send that cold Arctic air mass our way! Normally by this time we’d have had at least 2 weeks of early ice fishing and the panfish bite was always fast & furious on the t-channels……but not this year! Crazy as it sounds, I know some club members who are still fishing open water in their boats and they are cleaning up on a fantastic “late season” musky bite! Unfortunately, many of us have winterized and stored our boats in anticipation of the “deep freeze” and we missed out on some great late season musky action. Lot’s of club stuff going on as usual with the on-set of the New Year! On Thursday January 10th, 2013 our 1st speaker of the 2013 season will be Mike Keyes from Keyes Outdoors. Mike hosts and runs Keyes Outdoors Television; a fast paced program about musky fishing all across the Midwest! Admission will be $5.00/person at the so get there early to kick off your 2013 musky season in style!! We will have an “all you can eat” buffet for $13.00/person that evening. Food will be served starting at 6:00PM and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00PM. The Chicago Musky Show will run January 11th-13th at Harper College in Palatine. Everything you could possibly want will be at this show. Whether you need to fill your musky box with some new tackle, plan a musky trip or just attend some great seminars, it’s all available right at this show. For those who look forward to the annual Lure Swap on Saturday night following the closing of the Musky Show, it will once again be held at Official’s Time Out upstairs in the Poplar Creek Bowling Alley off Higgins Road in Hoffman Estates. See the FRV website for additional details at www.frvmuskie.com. We will have a booth at the show and we’ll be selling raffle tickets for a great musky rod & reel combo. The winning ticket will be drawn at the conclusion of the show on Sunday. Stop by our booth and say hello & purchase some tickets, update your membership or buy a Ca$h is King raffle ticket!!! All proceeds will go to funding the FRV Chapter programs and as always we appreciate your support. I’d like to thank everyone who donated canned & dry goods at our December meeting for the Elgin Community Crisis Center. They were overwhelmed at the amount of food I dropped off to them and they were very appreciative. Thanks to all of you for your kindness and generosity! Also, please make your calendars to attend our march 2nd FRV Fundraising Banquet at Chandlers in Schaumburg in the Grand Ballroom! My guess is that we will be filled up 100% once again. Ticket packages are available off the FRV website! We will have tons of fantastic prizes & trips, check out the FRV website for the goody list! Finally, I am excited to begin the New Year as your club President for the final leg of my 2-year term. I do so with some fresh new faces & ideas seated on the FRV board. We have a lot of work to do in 2013 and I am confident that with the people and processes we have in place, we can achieve the goals of growing our Research, Stocking and Youth programs in 2013. I hope everyone has a prosperous 2013 and may this be the year that you catch the fish of a lifetime! May your 2013 season be filled with many great memories! Here’s to your continued health and happiness in the coming New Year and please remember to keep the families and the children of Sandy Hook Elementary in your prayers, they need all the love and support they can get!! Until next month………ice a few slabs! Rich Gallagher PAGE 2 GENERAL MEETINGS 7:00 PM SCHAUMBURG GOLF CLUB/CHANDLER’S CHOPHOUSE 401 N. Roselle Road in Schaumburg, IL. NOTES - DVD’s 5 things you need to know to Boat More Fish: 1. Know what your lake has to offer. What forage is available - both bait & predator. Concentrate on locations where both are present... 2. Instead of buying a lot of lures- take a few lures and learn to use them well. Learn triggering aspects of each of them. “Big Baits” are not always the go to for "Big Fish...” 3. Draw sketches of familiar good lake structures on paper - much like having a map made of your minds eye. Active fish are more likely going to be in shallow water. Vary the casting angles of approach to stand out from the crowd... 4. Learn how to handle following fish - Don't shout out " fish, fish, fish.” You & Boat Partner(s) must stay still. No moving around... 5. Nothing will put more fish in the boat than "confidence," and a "great attitude...” WWW.FRVMUSKIE.COM PAGE FRV MUSKIES INC. 4 JANUARY 2013 Mike Keyes is “Keynote” & 0ur January FRV Speaker FRV will kick off 2013 speaker lineup on January 10th, with Mike Keyes of ”Keyes Outdoors.” fishing show fame. Each year, FRV helps the IMA fund IL Dept. Of Natural Resources muskie & general fishing related projects. Each January there is a joint, open IMA/DNR meeting held in conjunction with the Chicago Musky Show. At this year’s meeting, DNR will report its 2012 muskie related projects & research. DNR will also lay out its muskie fishery plan for 2013, & detail exactly what it wants to accomplish this coming year. To help make this happen, DNR requests specific resources for specific projects from the IMA, and its members. FRV has helped fund many of these projects over the years. What actually is important as IMA members, is the fact that we can present & discuss openly our own ideas directly with the head fisheries people of the DNR. Recent topics have included: stocking muskies, continual budget issues, as well as ideas to channel funds to IDNR for fishing related uses only, among others. This is your chance to be heard by the DNR people that make the decisions. In spite of the State’s financial problems, find out how the DNR continues to enhance the Illinois’ muskie fishery. The 2013 IMA Meeting will be held at Harper College on Saturday, January 12th at 9:00-12:00 AM, on the 2nd floor, Rm. 237m. You do NOT have to pay show admission to attend this meeting. See you there! WWW.FRVMUSKIE.COM JANUARY FRV MUSKIES INC. 2013 PAGE 7 FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER… For the past three consecutive years our Chapter has remained at (300) plus members. This places our Chapter in a tie for third place with one of the Minnesota Chapters… Size is important, it helps our chapter to provide better speakers, along with more events and outings. This is the primary reason your membership is important to our Chapter’s success.... Our biggest challenge is reminding members not to let their memberships expire, so when you receive a reminder letter from either FRV or MI, please don’t procrastinate, renew it promptly... You have the convenience of renewing your membership at the monthly meetings, by email to: [email protected] or www.muskiesinc.org.
