It’s the end of March and ice fisherman are still ice fishing on the Chain O’ Lakes, what’s wrong with this picture? The lakes in Northern Wisconsin & Minnesota still have 20”-30” of hard ice under a foot or more of slush and snow, making getting to your favorite ice fishing location nearly impossible without a 4-wheeler!! Rumor has it that the ice may not leave those lakes until late April or even early May, so the walleye opener may be a 50/50 chance of ice fishing Vs. open water fishing! Last year’s record warmth and this year’s lack of snow have given us the false sense of security, thinking that spring is right around the corner. Recent cold fronts have stopped the thawing process only to revive the ice making on many of the bigger lakes in our area! As a result of the cold, windy, dreary weather, most of us have come down with a bad case of cabin fever! I’ve have had enough of the ice fishing and am looking for an open water fix! Many lakes including Kincaid, Spring Lake and Cave Run are open and muskies are being caught at all 3 locations!! If you can take some time off from crazy work schedules & family commitments, there is nothing that settles the soul like a weekend out on the water in the early spring. It always a great feeling to smell the fresh spring air as you get the boat on plane for the 1st fishing outing of the season! There are lots of opportunities for early season bluegill, crappie, bass, walleye and muskies; but you can’t catch ‘em while at work!! Work will always be there….you just gotta take the time to get out and do some fishing! I can’t believe that analysts are predicting $5.00/gallon gas prices come summertime! I sure hope they are wrong! Insanely high gas prices will force many of us to fish closer to home and limit our travels. Either way, it’s a great excuse to get out on the water this spring with family & friends and explore some new lakes right here in our own state. Our 18th annual Spring “Challunge on the Chain” is scheduled for Saturday May 18th which is not our normally scheduled last Saturday in April. This was done for several reasons; first to put us on better weather patterns and secondly better musky fishing conditions. Hopefully the spawn will be over and we will catch a hot musky bite in mid-May! Historically, this has been the case so let’s hope it pans out! We are lagging well behind last year’s entries at this time, so if you haven’t gotten your team entries in, please do so as soon as possible. We heard the public opinion and there are some new rules and location changes as a result! We will be leaving from Steitz’s Resort on Bluff Lake. Tournament anglers will be able to launch from anywhere on the Chain, but all participants must leave in numerical order from Steitz’s at 7:00AM the day of the tournament. The awards ceremony and dinner will be held at the VFW in Antioch, and Chauncey Niziol from ESPN Radio Chicago AM-1000 will once again be our M.C. As many of you know, this is a great one day tournament and it’s a lot of fun to fish, so sign up now. Starting positions can be viewed on the FRV website by clicking on the forums page, then 2013 Challunge on the Chain! The FRV “Cast for a Cure” Breast Cancer Awareness Outing is scheduled for Saturday May 18th. We will be launching at the new Musky Tales location on Channel Lake (old Mentone’s property). We will also be having our lunch and gathering there after the event! Thanks to Kurt Eltvedt and his staff at Musky Tales for putting this together for us! Cost is $35.00/person and includes your lunch, soft drinks & a commemorative t-shirt. Check the FRV site to register for this event. All monies raised will be donated to the Breast Cancer fund here in Northern Illinois. Breast Cancer has touched many of our friends & families lives so come on out and fish with the club in support of a great cause. If you can’t fish it, try to donate some money towards this event, it’s for a great cause! Finally, we have our Youth Musky Hunt scheduled for June 13th-15th on Moose Lake in Hayward, IL. We are joining forces with the YCA (Youth Conservation Alliance) for this outing. If you have a child or know of someone who has a child who would like to attend this event, see our Youth Director Hugh Flack at one of our meetings to get an application filled out and turned in so your child can be considered for this event. You can also e-mail Hugh for more information at [email protected] The FRV & YCA is picking up the costs for your child’s lodging, meals and guides, all we ask is that the guardian picks up the tab for their own lodging & meals. It’s a great event, hope you can make it! Until next month….blow out the fogging oil on those outboards!! Let’s go fishin! A P RIL 2013 Fox River Valley Chapter of Muskies Inc. 18th Annual “Challunge on the Chain” Catch & Release Muskie Tournament Series Headquarters: Bluff Lake on the Fox Chain of Lakes With the long winter in mind, its now time to sign up for our 18th Annual “Challunge on the Chain Tournament.” The first installment of this two event series will be held on Saturday, May 18, at 7 am... This year, we moved the date back 3 weeks to get past the spawn. In similar fashion, the fall event of the series will be held on October 5th …moved up 3 weeks to get ahead of turnover. We’ve received lots of feedback about our tournaments over the last few years, so we’ll be trying some other changes to our format. Some highlights include an increase in prize money (with the Big Fish pool entry included in the registration fee), a new tournament starting/launch point (a more central location on Bluff Lake), and a new venue for our headquarters at the end of the day. Past participants can also verify that we have lots of great raffle prizes as well, so if you don’t put enough fish in the net to end up in the top 10, you can still walk out a winner! If you didn’t receive a registration flyer in the mail, please check out our website at frvmuskie.com or attend the May meeting to get information first-hand. A P RIL 2013 Fox River Valley 2013 YOUTH MUSKIE HUNT FRV Muskies, Inc. has chosen ten lucky young anglers, to attend a musky camp designed specifically for young adults. On June 13th -15th, these young Musky Hunters will embark on a chaperoned trip to Mystic Moose Resort on Moose Lake in Hayward, WI. The young participants will have all of their expenses paid by FRV Muskies Inc!! Candidates with previous fishing experience, between the ages of 13 & 17 were selected, by judging personal essays written on the great outdoors. These Young Guns will be also be required to volunteer time at a FRV meeting or event, & help out with set up, ticket sales, or cleanup... The 2013 Youth Outing continues FRV’s long-standing tradition of organizing exciting trips for young musky fishermen. Previous successful scholarship trips have been held at Lac Vieux Desert and Moose Lake in Northern WI, and the Indian Lakes Chain in Ontario. During the outing, the developing anglers will learn musky fishing skills, outdoor traditions, good sportsmanship, boating safety, weather awareness, planning, organizational skills, & a host of other tools designed to help them throughout their lives, both on and off the water... The FRV Board works tirelessly to promote the three main tenets of Muskies, Inc.—Youth, Fisheries, & Conservation. In addition to our work to add more Muskies to local waterways, & protect those waterways for future generations, our youth programs provide a vital platform to ensure the future of musky fishing. We introduce the next generation to the magic of our sport, & educate the public on the role and importance of the King of Freshwater Fish. Moose Lake harbors good quantities of Muskies and we know the kids are going to have a terrific time and encounter some great fishing too. Thank You, Hugh Flack, FRV Youth Director WWW.FRVMUSKIE.COM A P RIL FRV MUSKIES INC. 2013 P AG E 7 FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER… For the past three consecutive years our Chapter has remained at (300) plus members. This places our Chapter in a tie for third place with one of the Minnesota Chapters… Size is important, it helps our chapter to provide better speakers, along with more events and outings. This is the primary reason your membership is important to our Chapter’s success.... Our biggest challenge is reminding members not to let their memberships expire, so when you receive a reminder letter from either FRV or MI, please don’t procrastinate, renew it promptly... You have the convenience of renewing your membership at the monthly meetings, by email to: [email protected] or www.muskiesinc.org.
