Record temperatures for well over a week hit the Chicagoland area! Water temperatures on the Chain shot into the upper 50’s and low 60’s! Who would have thought it possible? As March goes down as one of the 4th warmest ever recorded, many of us found ourselves scrambling to get rods, reels & boats ready for the open water season at least 4-6 weeks ahead of schedule! With water temps skyrocketing, many of us took advantage of the hot Panfish, Crappie, Bass & Musky bites on many of the lakes right here in Illinois! The 2012 fishing season is already in full swing for many of our members! This year will test the mettle for many of us who frequently musky fish on the Fox Chain. The explosion of gizzard shad on the Fox Chain over the past few years will be a double-edged sword for many of us. While this abundant, protein rich forage base will certainly help our Muskies to grow faster, fatter and heavier than ever before, it will also change their habits, haunts and locations. For those of you who have experienced giant schools of shad on your graphs or visually saw huge schools of shad busting the surface for what seemed to be ½ a football field long, you know what I am referring to. So how does this affect us you ask? Well, shad are roamers. Where they go, so will Mr. Muskie. We can certainly continue to fish for them the way we always have; fishing shallow, fishing weed edges, inside & outside turns, etc…. and Muskies will be caught, no doubt. There will also be another population of Muskies that will take up residence suspended over deep water structure…….that structure is the large schools of roaming shad. We will definitely see a change in musky anglers fishing patterns on the Chain as the shad will now dictate where the big girls hang. We will see more and more anglers fishing open water, targeting these huge schools shad and fishing for the trophies prowling directly underneath! The bigger, heavier fish will be found out on the main lake basin and will be accessible via casting or trolling. Give this method a try during your 2012 season on the Chain and let me know how you do! I guarantee the bigger fish will be found deeper, chasing those schools of shad. We are nearly a month away from the 17th Annual Spring Challunge on the Chain which will take place on Saturday April 28th at Famous Freddie’s on Pistakee Lake. Based on our current weather patterns, the muskies should be done spawning by the time our tournament rolls around which is great news for all of us who are planning on fishing it. This year we are going to have a $10,000.00 cash reward for the 1st musky caught that is 50 inches or better! It would awesome to be able to award a lucky angler a check of that magnitude! If you’ve fished it before, I’ll see you there. To those who are still on the fence about fishing this tournament; come on out, it’s a great one day event that is a lot of fun! We will have a ton of great prizes to give away. Cost to enter is $200.00/2-man team. Hope you can join us! Our April 11th speaker is famed IN & MN musky guide Mike Hulbert. Mike will be covering fishing for Muskies in MN and IN. Grab a friend & come early for the buffet dinner which runs from 6-7PM. The meeting starts promptly at 7:00PM. Admission is $3.00/person at the door! Finally, don’t forget to sign up for the Breast Cancer Outing this coming May. Cost is $25.00/angler and includes a commemorative T-shirt and a great lunch at the Chain O’ Lakes state park. See the website at www.frvmuskie.com for entry forms. Until next month…….hug a musky! FRV Chapter of Muskies, Inc. has announced a terrific opportunity for ten very lucky young anglers who will attend a fall musky camp designed specifically for kids. From October 11-14th, 2012 the select group of young musky hunters will embark on a fabulous chaperoned trip to Sunrise Lodge on the shores of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Lac Vieux Desert to fish for some fat autumn Muskies! Youth participants will have all of their expenses paid by the Fox River Valley Chapter of Muskies Inc. The name “Lac Vieux Desert” was literally translated by early French fur trappers in the region who found the native Anishanaabe language version of the name meant “Old Garden” or “Old Clearing”. The 4260 acre lake straddles the borders of Michigan and Wisconsin and is the starting point of the Wisconsin River. The 2012 youth musky outing continues the chapter’s long-standing tradition of organizing exciting trips for young musky fishermen, with opportunities to build their own fishing and outdoor heritage. Previous successful scholarship trips have been held at Lac Vieux Desert and Moose Lake in northern Wisconsin, and the Indian Lakes Chain in Ontario, Canada among others. During these adventures, the developing anglers have the opportunity to learn musky fishing skills, outdoor traditions, good sportsmanship, boating safety, weather awareness, planning, organizational skills and a host of other tools designed to help them throughout their lives both on and off the water. According to FRV Muskie President Rich Gallagher - “Our board works tirelessly to promote the three main tenets of Muskies, Inc. -Youth, Fisheries and Conservation”. Gallagher added- “In addition to our work to add more Muskies to local waterways, and to protect those waterways for future generations, our youth programs provide a vital platform to ensure the future of musky fishing by introducing the next generation to the magic of our sport and educating the public on the role and importance of the King of Freshwater Fish. LVD (Lac Vieux Desert) harbors some big fish and we know the kids are going to have a terrific time and encounter some great fishing too. Complete details, travel requirements and outing specifics on the 2012 Fox River Valley Chapter’s 2012“FRV Youth Musky Program” can be obtained by visiting the Chapter’s website at www.frvmuskie.com.
