Spring, where the heck is it? Is it ever going to get warm? As of this writing it’s
early May and the weather has been absolutely terrible this Spring! We’ve had
huge swings in temperatures from one extreme to the other and rain……….lots
of it!! This has wreaked havoc on establishing any steady fishing patterns, and
is making musky fishing tough for all of us! While we wait for the weather to
stabilize; the trees are starting to bloom, the grass is getting greener and the
days are getting longer. For those of you who haven’t had that 1st shakedown
cruise yet, it’s time to get that boat in the water! Get your checklists together &
load up your tackle; cause warming water temps equals muskies on the prowl!
Hopefully, all of us are ready to go for the 2011 musky season! Many of our
club members have already started fishing, and fish are already being registered into our 2011 Members Only Fishing Contest! E-mail your MOFC entries
to Dan Koniewicz along your photos, so that we can post them on the FRV site!! Don’t let these extreme
weather swings put a damper on your Spring fishing season; get out & fish! As of this writing, our 16th Annual Spring Challunge on the Chain is in the record books! This year lake levels were near flood stage, so
the Fox Waterway Agency implemented a no-wake restriction on the Chain. This forced us to do a “rolling
start” where the entire 66-team field kept their boats on their trailers prior to the start and “trailered” their
rigs to a launch of their choice. Even though this was a 1st for us, things went smoothly. Unfortunately,
Mother Nature served up some windy conditions for tournament. The high winds created whitecaps on all
lakes, and 2-3 foot waves were common. These high winds & waves made fishing your favorite spot difficult, but nonetheless 132 anglers bundled up, braved the elements and managed to catch & release 5
muskies!! Following the days end, we all gathered at Famous Freddie’s on Pistakee Lake for some hot
food, cold beer and camaraderie! Chauncey Niziol was our MC and he did a great job with the awards and
raffles! The 1st place team of Nick Cammarata & Scott Urquhart boated 2 fish; a 34.25” and a 45.5”er. The
45.5 inch fish caught by Scoot was also the big fish of the tournament. Congrats to both of you for a great
job
and
an
awesome
finish
under
some
really
tough
conditions!
Taking second place was the team of Jeff Pederson and Ray Fuller with a 42.5 inch fish; followed closely
by Dave VanDoorn and Chris Drury, who took 3rd place with a 41.5 inch fish. The 4th place team of Chad
Asprooth and Debbie Asprooth (mother & son team) boated a
32 inch fish.
The remaining monies for 5th thru 10th places were paid out via a drawing of team numbers. Thanks to all
of the anglers who participated, I hope you all had a great time. I would also like to personally thank all of
the FRV members who donated their time to help run this event, we couldn’t have done it without you! I
hope we will see many of you back for our 2011 Fall Challunge which will be held again at Famous
Freddie’s on Saturday October 22nd. BTW, our scheduled speaker for May 11th was Tom Gelb, who unfortunately had to cancel due to health issues. We were all looking forward to seeing Tom and we wish him a
speedy recovery! Our May 11th guest speaker will now be Indiana musky guide extraordinaire Chae Dolsen. Chae will covering musky fishing tactics & tips on lakes in Northern Indiana; so don’t forget to bring
your IN lake maps and notepads as Chae will be getting into the nitty gritty details! If you’ve fished with
Chae before, you know he is one of the most knowledgeable individuals around when it come to lakes like
Webster, Tipp and the Barbie Chain! This is a don’t miss meeting if you plan on fishing any IN lakes in
2011! Our May 11th “all you can eat” buffet dinner menu will be posted by Pete Barber on the FRV message board; so please post your RSVP by 5/9/11 on the FRV site if you plan to attend the buffet dinner.
FYI, our May 11th is the last monthly club meeting before we break for the summer. Our monthly meetings
will resume on Wednesday August 10th when our guest speaker will be Aaron Sands who will be talking
about Lake Shabbona Muskies! I hope everyone has a great summer and gets to spend some quality time
with their family, fishing on their favorite lakes. Remember to take a kid fishing this summer and create a
lifetime memory!!
Until August….good fishing!

Spring Fling - Oconomowoc, WI Area Musky Fishing Tips from Dennis Radloff:





Fish will be shallow - fish “skinny” bays - from as
shallow as 2 feet of water - to the deep water break.
Find warmest water temps - fish any sheltered bays or
areas with sand, beaches, or fresh weed growth.
Use conventional Spring Musky Lure Presentations.
Try spot fishing negative fish in shallow water with
6 inch Bass Lizards - use large weights, hooks & leaders.
Or use Musky Jigs Set-ups. (Jig-a-Beast pictured.—>)
Expect lake conditions to be very early spring-like Spring 2011 is way behind schedule.

The Oconomowoc area is in Waukesha County, just North & West of
Milwaukee. Our Feb Meeting Speaker was Pro Guide Mr. Dennis
Radloff, who lives & guides on the lakes in the area. Dennis covered
Lakes Okauchee, Oconomowoc, Fowler, Pewaukee, & Lac La Belle.
With healthy musky populations, these lake are all considered consistent producer of muskies - up to and above 50”.
An award for the outing will be given to a current FRV member that
catches the biggest muskie. Note that tournament rules apply - you
need both a witness of catch, and a picture of the fish.
The Outings are a great way for new members to meet and share

2011 Youth Musky Scholarship Recipients
Head To The Canadian Shield!
The Fox River Valley Chapter of Muskies, Inc. has announced a world-class opportunity for ten very lucky young
anglers who will receive “musky scholarships” from the chapter, allowing them to attend a very special Canadian
fishing event. From August 17th-20th, 2011, the select group of young musky hunters, each accompanied by an adult
guardian, will embark on a fabulous chaperoned trip to NW Ontario to fish the musky-filled waters of the Indian
Chain of Lakes north of Vermillion Bay, Ontario. Youth participants will have all of their expenses paid by the Fox
River Valley Chapter.
The 2011 youth musky outing continues the chapter’s storied tradition of organizing exciting trips to remote destinations, providing young musky fisherman with opportunities to build their own fishing and outdoor heritage. According to Rich Gallagher, the Fox River Valley Chapter President, “Our board works tirelessly to promote the
three main tenets of Muskies, Inc. -Youth, Fisheries and Conservation”. Gallagher added- “In addition to our work
to add more Muskies to local waterways, and to protect those waterways for future generations, our youth programs provide a vital platform to ensure the future of musky fishing by introducing the next generation to the magic
of our sport and educating the public on the role and importance of the King of Freshwater Fish. The kids are sure
to have encounters with lots of fish and have a terrific time.”
