“There Is Only A Handful of Flour In My Jar
And A Little Oil In My Jug.”
‘Two Small Coins Worth A Few Cents.”
“ A handful of flour and a couple of small coins.” The importance of the two stories in today’s Scripture is not because one woman received from the Prophet
Elijah a miraculous source of flour and oil, or that the poor widow who gave all
she had received the blessing of Jesus.
You can only give what you have. Now that might seem obvious at first glance,
no? But how many of us are truly content with what we have? I’m not referring to
one’s financial resources, though the two stories do seem to highlight an economic
situation. We live in a highly competitive world. Youngsters from early on in life
are taught to compete, either literally on the sports field or figuratively in the academic or business world.
We are robbed of contentment almost from the moment we become aware of ourselves. We are taught to compete even with ourselves: “today you spoke one new
word, tomorrow you can speak two;” “today you took three steps, tomorrow you’ll
take three more;” “after high school you’ll go to college and get a really good
job;” “you’ve really accomplished a phenomenal amount of work today, the past
ten years, your whole lifetime!”
We live in a highly comparative society. We search for the proverbial “better
mouse trap” or vaccine or fuel injection engine or whatever. It’s hard to just have a
They gave
“handful of flour, a little oil, or two small
of what they had,
coins” in a world which believes that “more
freely and generously.
is better or “bigger is better.”
But suppose that's all you really have...or
are? Suppose in the “latest clinical studies,” as they say, you come out with a “bit
of flour, oil, and a few small coins”?
The two women in today’s Scripture possessed a quality which the Spirit considers worthy of emulation. They gave of what they had, freely and generously. Contrary to the world’s norms, each woman gave whatever it was she had, no matter
how small or insignificant it might have appeared to others. Each of them is a distinct personality, and if we were going to write a story about each, these women
would not be “plaster-casts” of each other. But the point is: they gave what they
had; who they were.
It may seem to us that we don’t have much more than a bit of flour, some oil and a
few coins. After all, we are who we are. I must do the things of Bob Grib and try
to share my “Bob Gribness” spontaneously and as generously as I can. I cannot
give Mother Teresa or St. Ignatious of Loyola or St. Francis of Assisi. In fact, I
cannot even give Jesus Christ. Ah, but I can be and give the “Christed Bob Grib.!”
After all, isn’t that what my Baptism did for me - “Christed, Christened” me?
Flour, oil, a few coins - Voila!

St. Juliana CCD Program
We are very proud of our St. Juliana CCD Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) Program. We keep
growing and growing! We meet on Wednesday
evenings from 6:45 until 8:00pm.
Our Program has 325 students from 210 families. The students
attend 38 public/private schools. We have a wonderfully diverse enrollment.
Our students are taught by 23 dedicated teachers who have
volunteered to share their time and faith with the children in
our program. We are grateful to the following teachers:
1st - Dotty DePetro, Kathy Fergus, Rose Gulliford,
Therese Jennings
2nd - Mary Berg, Linda Ebrom, Eileen Moriarty
3rd - Pam Ebrom, Alice Harris, Mary Rottman
4th - Dan & Betty Cieplik, Pat Trevino
5th - Diane Damert, Kristina Krueger, Ann Schoening
6th - Carol Beucher, Bernie Rieman, Lisa Maskala Streff
7th - Sharon Brabson, Jane Lidgus, Gayle McAuliffe
8th - Pete Schmidt.
We are also grateful to the 15-20 people who volunteer in our
program.
We asked our students why they liked CCD and why they
thought it was important. The following are some of the students responses:
FIRST YEAR:
Brianna Gruber - I like CCD because we learn about God
and His Son Jesus. We learn why God is important to us.
Gabrielle Buikema - CCD is important because it makes you
smarter. We learn a lot about God. Angie Anderson - I like
CCD because we learn about God and Jesus. I have fun. I like
the first day. We read about how God made the world. John
Cardella - I like CCD because I like to learn about God. I
love God. God is the maker of the world. God is powerful.
Nicholas Udell - I like CCD because I like to learn about God
and all the holy people. When I come to CCD I like to learn.
Kacie Bemis - I like to learn about the Holy Spirit.
Eric Lucchesi - I like to learn about God.
SECOND YEAR:
Aidan Fallon - I like CCD because it is fun! Mary Hehn - I
like CCD because I can't wait for my Communion. Kathleen
Gross - I like CCD because Ms. Moriarty is my teacher and I
know her. I also think it is important because you learn about
the saints, learn how to say the rosary, we get our First Communion at the start of next year, we learn about priests, God
and Jesus and we do a lot of worksheets to help us learn about
the church and creation. Joey DiFilippo - I like CCD because
I learn more things about God. I like CCD because we can go
to Church. I like the priest, Father Steve. He's nice to us. And
Page 3
I like to learn things. Mike O'Malley - I like CCD
because you can pray to God and you can sing to
God. Sam Kurzydlo - I think CCD is important
because we pray, learn about Jesus, and have fun.
We salute the Lord and we pray for him. The Lord
guides us and forgives us. We sing songs about
him, and wear our rosaries with pride. I respect
the Lord. That is why I like CCD and think it is important.
THIRD YEAR:
Andrew Schultz - I think that CCD is important because you
get to learn about God, Jesus, Mary, Joseph and all the other
people. Ben Calpino - I think CCD is important because it
teaches you about God. Greg Halik - I like CCD because I
have a good teacher and I learn about the Lord and Jesus and
Mary. Emma Boyd - I like CCD because you learn about lots
of cool things like stories about Jesus. I've always loved everything about Jesus! I love CCD! Kristen Apel - I like CCD
because I like learning about God. It’s really fun. I wish I
could come everyday. Alec Wojda - I like CCD because I like
to learn about the Holy Family and the celebrations and ways
to pray and how to pray.
FOURTH YEAR:
Casey McKenna - CCD is very important because we need to
know religion. If we don't know religion we won't know anything about being nice to other people or about most of the
details other than about Christmas or the other holidays. I
think CCD is fun because I think that it is good to learn about
God and that by going to CCD you in a way make God feel
good. You make him feel good by letting him know you worship him, by praying for others to let God and the people you
are praying for that you care. Lacey Schultz - CCD is important to me because we learn new things about Jesus every
Wednesday. It is important to me because I need to know
about Jesus so when I'm older I know everything I need to
know and do. I like CCD because I get to learn new things and
I get to read and serve in masses and I get to teach my own
CCD class. Caroline Hoffman - I like CCD because I get to
learn about God and all the great things he did in life to make
us exist. Learning about God is making me believe in God
even more. I learn about him. I also enjoy reading about God
and wish I could do good just like him. I think that it was
amazing how God could do all of these things. I love CCD
because of all of these things God does. Elizabeth Byrne - I
like CCD because we do lots of fun activities. This year I am
going to like CCD even more because we are going to do the
Christmas play. I love doing CCD. CCD Rules!
Sarah Espinoza - I like CCD because I like learning about
God and I like my teacher, Mrs. Cieplik. I also love getting
involved in CCD every year. Kelly Cullerton - I love CCD
class so much and I love going to it. It is fun to pray to God so
much. I would go every day. I want to pray at CCD and I love
the kids a lot. So I come on Wednesday to CCD.
Look for 5th though 8th grade’s response next week.

Farewell & Godspeed
Dear Parishioners,
For more than 26 years, it has been my honor and privilege to serve so many
individuals, couples and families of the St. Juliana Parish and surrounding community. However, as of January 1, 2007, I plan to retire from private practice.
It has been a great blessing for me to work with you.
I appreciate all the support I have received over these years from colleagues and
staff, parish and school staff, our former advisory board and all who have contributed to the vision of counseling as a vital ministry. I am especially grateful for
the help and support of my husband, Tom, during the last few years, and for the
hospitality of the Parish.
Privacy and confidentiality of information has always been, and will continue to
be, of primary importance. Records that are ten years or older have been shredded. All other records will be kept in my possession as required by law and
shredded after a period of seven to ten years.
Thank you! I will miss you and wish you the best. You will always be in my heart
and prayers.
Sincerely,
Sue Borrelli

Holy Hour in The Chapel
Mondays from 7:00 - 8:00 pm
It is true, Our Lord hears our prayers anywhere for He has made the promise,
“Ask, and you will receive,” but He has revealed to His servants that those who
visit Him in the Blessed Sacrament will obtain a more abundant measure of grace.
Blessed Henry Suso says that Jesus will grant the petitions of the faithful in His
Eucharistic presence sooner than in any other place.

6th Grade Bible Ceremony
The sixth graders were presented with
bibles at a special prayer service on October 11th.
The first scripture reading at the prayer
service was from Isaiah which reminded
the students that the word of God is like
the rain and snows that water the earth,
causing her to bear much fruit. The next
reading was from Mark's parable of The
Sower and the Seed. This parable called
the students to hear God's word with an
open heart and to be like the seed that
falls on good ground and yields a fruitful
harvest.
The students promised to receive the
word of God and to study it with love
and respect. The students and the bibles
were blessed after which each student
was called by name to come forward and
receive their Bible
The sixth graders presented the fourth
and fifth grade students with mustard
and pumpkin seeds for their class prayer
tables to remind them to let the word of
God take root in their hearts.
Polite Pumpkins
First Graders are learning to live as Jesus did.
They are trying very hard to be "polite pumpkins" during the month of October.
Each polite pumpkin is given a special pumpkin to wear and one to add to the First
Grade Polite Pumpkin Patch. What a fine crop of polite pumpkins our first
graders are!
